I must make one thing clear. The Jack Casady is a HOLLOWBODY. Not semi-hollow. Its among my favorite basses. That said, LEL is one of the best channels on the earth and sea. Great sounding bass LEL! I picked the EJC up yesterday in GC in Pelham Blue and went home with it because it played and sounded so good. It was such a fine playing bass and the old school tone was so awesome and warm. The tone knob and impedance switch I found to both be extremely usable. For one pickup, this is a very versatile bass. Takes a little getting used to when you’re standing, but sitting down, it’s the most comfortable bass to play as well. I found the fit and finish on mine to be pretty flawless coming from the newer production location in China. Thanks again for a great review.

4:45 okay - it is worth mentioning that under the silverburst is a maple top on maple body with mahogany neck, as opposed to the reverse, which is on more basses than not. One sees mahogany body/maple neck on a LOT of instruments.
@russellzauner3 жыл бұрын
The sticker on the back of the headstock looks like what I see on guitars made in China, but I checked hard (without a serial number there's no for sure way to tell and I don't own one and I'm not asking for one) for a bit and it looks like they went from Samick to Peerless in the mid 90's for Korean mfr. Gibson somehow opened a plant exclusive to them in China for Epi builds. They don't say on the company websites but most people seem to get straight answers from Gibson when they ask so there are a few lists and decoders out there that correlate well and seem to be useful. I need more semi/hollowbody. There is a hollow fretless 5 in Germany but they won't ship international and it's already 550 euros. I got access to the classifieds site where it's posted but I have been hesitant to contact the owner because I translated their ad and they said only local...but it's made entirely of birdseye maple!!!!!! NO LIE! 5 string hollow body fretless made entirely of not only maple, but birdseye maple. it's VERY shiny.

This bass was a revelation to me. I bought a gold top for gentle acoustic gigs but it will do anything except fusion and opera. It can weep one minute and roar the next. Moving the strap button to a reinforced pad in the top horn sorted the balance problem. Don’t change the strings, btw…

Absolutely love my Epi JC but I've made some mods to get it where I'm *really* happy with it. Like Lobster, I've replaced the awful standard bridge with a Hipshot. Looks way better and has superior functionality. The big issue for me was neck dive. I replaced the tuners with Hipshot lightweight tuners which improved the situation but didn't cure it. I had the strap button relocated from the neck heel to the upper bout by a really good bass setup guy that I have used for many years. Because the bout is hollow you can't just screw in the strap button there. He made a wood block exactly the same shape as the inside of the bout, and glued it in after putting it through the pickup hole. Neck dive is now greatly reduced and no longer an issue. The final mod was to address the grabby gloss neck. I masked off the neck at the nut and where it joined the body and gave it a light rub with 1000 grade wet and dry paper. It now has a beautiful satin-feel. The tone is awesome with NPS roundwounds that still provide the thump of flats (I used La Bellas on it for a while) with more tonal versatility. Removing the pickguard shows the gorgeous gold to full advantage. These days it's just my Jazz Bass and the Epi that get used while the P only comes out occasionally.

Is that impedance switch switching between 3 different capacitors that make up the “in series potentiometer and capacitor to ground” tone control part of the electronics? If so do you know the capacitor values? My guess would be .022, .047, and .10uF. For a passive bass it has a lot flexibility in tones. My guess is that the tone control on a bass with active electronics has even more control for cutting the higher frequencies.
@LowEndLobster3 жыл бұрын
Thanks David! I'm not exactly sure how the switch works. Normally I'd open it up, but semi hollow instruments are a PITA to work on. I do hope to get one of the newer Chinese models to compare this to, and will potentially take that one apart to do a deeper dive. Great comment!

Sounds so good I love the tone! However, being used to a strap button over the 12th fret, the added reach and twist of the wrist required to play down by the nut on this bass may be the same issue that put me off my G3 :( I had to sling it low to avoid strain. I have an older model Goldtop. I don't know where it was made, but it is a beautiful instrument, so I guess the people who made it didn't want their organs removed if they fucked up. I also have a J bass and a Les Paul special bass. They all have different voices and I love them all. Got them all from pawn shops and I feel for the people who couldn't keep them, but they are all playing music to this day. Been playing since 68 and my youngest sister will sell them for postage when I cark it. No one really owns a beautiful musical instrument, we just use them until someone else gets a gig. Jack Casady Signature basses are the most versatile bass you can play. Whether you are on a world tour playing thrash, metal, rock or blues or waking up with your hand on your cock and getting ready to play at Stan's Pool Hall for free burgers like me, you can play anything on them. My advice to young bass players is to get what you can afford and practice and practice. Become friends with drummers. I know that they accidentally lock themselves in cars and forget to lock toilet doors in aircraft, but with them, you are the backbone of any band. Buy a metronome, use it for a few years and then give it to a guitar player you don't like. If your parents feel guilty for kicking you out or your girlfriend finds paid employment, ask for an Epi Jack Casady Signature Bass. Save up to buy one. If you like big strings, you will never look back.

@budizen31047 ай бұрын
I have a Jack Casady, same as yours Lobster. I don't understand the hate for the 3-pt bridge. Jack uses them himself, and publishes his settings on the web, so it is not difficult to learn how to set them up correctly. There are NO drop-in replacement bridges other than other 3-pts. Both the Hipshot Supertone and the Babicz full contact have to be kludged to fit because they were made for flat top basses, and the JCS is rounded. Once you spend a few minutes and learn how to set them up properly the 3-pt bridges work just fine for the purpose intended. I don't get why someone would pay $100 or so just to make it a bit easier to change strings or set intonation. I mean, how often do you do either of those things? Jack could afford any bridge he wants, but uses his Signature basses right off the production line. Well, to each their own I suppose

Thanks. The Pelham Blue would be my preferred color for the JCB, which is currently out of stock everywhere. The Player Precision seems to be an instrument that could fun to modify as time goes by. The ultimate find would be a good used Ibanez ATK, but cannot find any in my price range.

Don't mean to jump in, but in my opinion it would depend on what you already have. If you already have a P or a J or even a PJ, I could see something like this to augment your arsenal. But you will probably want a passive single coil solid body bass. The Fender Player is a great one. This epiphone sounds great by itself, but from experience, it can be difficult to be heard in a mix with this type of bass. It could get frustrating depending on what kind of music you want to play.

Lobster, if any sources are offering this Bass w/case they are Unicorns. Due to complex financial concerns I employ pay as you play no interest ever plans. My source offers No case with this Bass. I am in the central U.S. Before blasting you for missleading info (don't get) our hopes up. My source Epiphone JC Bass case $150 (rounded up, pre tax) ships free. The players know what company I speak of(the broke or poor ones at least) so.

I Really wanted to get this bass. I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it. However, I think it's too big for me and I'm leaning more to a short scale bass. It looks okay in your hands, are you a tall guy?

This is your mom. Don't you think your videos would seem more professional if you wore real pants? I just want what's best for you, dear. More seriously though, I still find the impedance switch kind of baffling, and I own this bass. I guess it's a little hotter as the impedance goes up? To me, it just doesn't seem all that dramatic compared to, for example the effect one gets by turning the tone knob, or even just fiddling with tone and volume a bit together. I admit, I'm a little on the deaf side. Am I the only one who just doesn't quite *get* the impedance switch?
