I've been watching Ian Allison videos for the last hour. Love his playing, his thought process, and his energy and humor.

Sounds great. Beautiful, melodic playing really brings out the instrument's voice and vice versa.

Hey Ian. I had no idea you were a fellow Minnesotan. How cool is that? And SBL members too?!? Saaa-weeet! Hope you're staying thawed out these days. I'm going a little nerdy here. I just love having a small collection of basses to "hear what the basses have to say". 'Cuz they all have a different voice. I just picked up a 1960's Custom Kraft bass. Hollow body, 2 pickups. Wow. The difference in the voicing from your standard jazz or modern style animal. Then you play those old 50's and 60's tunes. And you can hear that voicing in there. Thanks for doing these videos. It really speaks to my nerdy side. Have a great day. ✌️😎👍🎸

Agree with melodic bass playing - AND: the tone of that LP bass is awesome! Very detailed; yet it has hints of upright string bass. Does anyone make a humbucker that sounds like this?

Glad to hear most hollow bodies have a shorter sustain and not just my cheap one.... That gibson is sexxyyy

Put a Hipshot bridge on that baby and your sustain and overall sound will increase nicely....not to mention setting your string height and intonation will be much easier.

5:40 yeh i often try to imagine the line first as a strings section and then translate the first violin to be a bassline. opens your ears to melody which works 50% of the time. (the other 50% im sorta thinking about it being a kick and a snare conversation...)

What kind of strings are you using? I have a Jack Casady signature bass. I find it very picky as to what strings sound good on it.

I have an old Harmony H27 but it sounds more like an upright bass than this or the starfires. Any experience with them?
