The Scotch thing gets me. This happened one St. Paddy's day (and so I was a bit drunk), so I snapped at this person for asking for an "Irish Scotch", at first let it slide but kept saying it. Words have meaning.

I think some people use the term "Scotch" when they mean "whisky." This is very common, some people ask, "Do you have a Kleenex?" when they mean "Do you have a tissue?" because "Kleenex" is a popular brand of tissues. This same thing happens when people say "I am going to Xerox this paper" when they mean "I am going to photo-copy this paper."
@fuhrertehlulzen4 жыл бұрын
@@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies Here we don't say "Do you have a Kleenex" it's always been "Do you have a tissue?" same with photocopying. never really associated those things to a brand. The only thing I can think of is an Esky for a portable cooler and even then I think I say cooler. I Know it's a minor thing but after a while it's nails on a blackboard.

Excellent video Erik. I'm extremely worried about the protection of the name Scotch right now with Brexit happening. The SWA are in bed with the Uk govt. and with the removal of the EU protection I have a strong hunch that it's going to be sold down the river, just as the Uk govt. have done with all of Scotland's produce from fishing to oil etc.
@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies5 жыл бұрын
It's in the economic interests of the SWA and all of Scotland to preserve the name "Scotch" and as stated in the video the laws protecting the name are duplicated in the laws of many other countries.

Excellent video Erik. Surprised to see they put the % of distillation so high 94.8% thats like vodka, think the bourbon rules are around 80% and most if not all scotch distillery's are staying down around this level or lower so the new make sprit has a flavor profile reflecting the ingredients. The whisky tribe channel did a recent video addressing the exportation of a cask of single malt they bought. It was drained into a container then a teaspoon of another single malt was added satisfying the requirement to make it a blended malt. They explained this had become a common practice that while satisfying the letter of the law subverts the "spirit" of the law a bit, pun intended. Cheers

My allergies can be pretty bad at times, and on more then one occasion, where no Kleenex could not be had, I've had to resort to using a few emergency "Kleenox".

Scotch regulations certainly make the Canadian industry look like the Wild West of Whisky.

True, in some instances Canadian laws (in my opinion) are too loose.

I'm talking with a distiller about a possible public facing job. They require WSET Spirits 1 & 2 certs. I get way more out of your videos than the WSET's videos. WSET's take the fun out of whisky.
@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies4 ай бұрын
WSET, like many other organizations, is purely academic and doesn’t take the audience into consideration. The only whisky training that puts a heavy emphasis on really good communication is the Wizard Academy’s whisky program. But the Edinburgh Whisky Academy does a fairly decent job as well.

@@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies I've looked at WSET Spirit 1 & 2. I feel like I could pass the written portions by just watching your videos.

I think you made an error when you said Scotch can only be made from water, malted barley, and yeast. Can’t it be made from any grain (not just malted barley?)
@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies5 жыл бұрын
Did you watch the ENTIRE video? I am presenting the material as it was taught. Rewatch the video and you'll see that I clarify the statement from the SWA 2009 Regulations.

Erik Wait I see - so it can’t be called scotch if it’s made from, say, 100% wheat?
@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies5 жыл бұрын
Mark Albers you can’t make a scotch whisky with 100% wheat. You can only use endogenous enzymes, so you need at least a little malted barley for the enzymes to convert into sugar. This is true for corn to make Bourbon as well. Even Irish Whiskey which has a high content of unmalted barley uses some malted barley.
