The fuel tank breather was blocked on my Golf Plus TDI which resulted in breakdown after about 10 mins (typically) driving. It woukdn't restart. Long story short, lift pump replaced but symotoms still remained. After yet another breakdown, the fuel filler cap was removed - sharp intake if air ! Reputedly access to the breather requires tank removal ?? Leaving the filler loose solved the problem !
