I'll never understand inviting politicians to masterclass. Like Yugopnik said, I understood like Gordon Ramsay, NDGT, and the urban gardening guy whose name is escaping me... But I do not understand what politicians would be invited to give a masterclass on. How to lie, cheat, steal, and kill people and laugh about it? How to perfect insider trading? Like if you weren't the president during a civil war and you reunited the country or if you didn't make massive reforms that greatly benefitted people's lives...I cant be bothered with it.
@winsonzhu44272 жыл бұрын
I agree with the sentiment, but they also answer it in the episode: it's about the prestige. Those vids are low effort and blatantly pandering to companies because that's the whole point. Score points with sponsors and look cool and respectable to establishment. brain-wormed American "enlightened centrist" liberals are about the only civilians who actually buy the stuff said in the masterclass
@castor96832 жыл бұрын
You already know the answer. Money. Masterclass knows that there's enough people out there who worship these demons so much that they would buy their shitty how to videos. So they make em.

32:06 Speaking of Spanish, I'm remembering when his brother Jeb Bush on a meeting with the Spanish Head of Government (whose title is "President of the Council of Ministers", at this time it was José María Aznar, who is basically like if you mixed Bush's and Trump's politics and added a stupid moustache), and Jeb called him "President of the Spanish Republic". We haven't had a republic in Spain since 1939, and the country is officially "Kingdom of Spain". Not to mention that the ruling party at the time (the People's Party, it's basically like the GOP) is staunchly monarchist.

Thinking about what a country should be for reminds me of a fascinating lecture from some English university on KZbin (Gresham college? Not sure.) This lecture was on the agricultural revolution in Europe after the fall of Rome that facilitated basically triple the population. What was so fascinating is that you see these villages in the UK in the 700s and 800s build out the substantial infrastructure needed to support livestock for labor, adopt ploughs for the fields and really skyrocket the production of grain. *THATS WHEN YOU SEE THE APPEARANCE OF MANORIAL LORDS, AFTER THE VILLAGES HAD ALREADY FIGURED THINGS OUT.* All because cereals were the perfect tax base for a government. The peasants built things up, not the other way around. The fascinating thing about this exchange is looking at the industrial revolution in the 1700-1900 timeframe. It was during this period that the government used it's ability tax the massive agricultural surplus to begin the process of industrial buildout and development ("free trade" building industrial economies is a lie, every great industrial power was built upon a massive government intervention program.) The manorial lords were simultaneously armed bullies who oppressed the peasants out of what they had built, but also the means by which the central authority was able to pool the resources to actually pull society out of an economy limited by the hectares of land available.

Two ultra long boomer jokes I’ve heard. Abridged. 1. A guy inherits an exotic pet known as a rary. The rary is super high maintenance and keeps messing up his life, but he can’t get rid of it. He and the rary wind up standing by a cliff and he considers nudging it off the edge. Just tip it over the edge. Another guy comes along and our protagonist explains the whole situation and what he was thinking about doing. The traveler says “oh no, it’s a wrong way to tip a rary” This completely blew over my head at the time because it’s a pun on “it’s a long way to Tipperary” which is a positively ANCIENT song. 2) this guy was super honest and selfless his whole life. He dedicated himself to the service of others at all times and got all the accolades for it but never let it get to his head. He goes to some foriegn land to do charity work and gets captured by cannibals, who threaten to eat him. He tells them that they will regret it if they do, but they do it anyway. After they finish eating him, they all become violently ill and start throwing up all over the place. The moral of the story is that you can’t keep a good man down.

Biden - Always has been an awful politician Trump - he’s a billionaire Obama - Drone strikes Bush jr - Iraq, Patriot act (they rhyme) Clinton - The crime bill (TBF Biden made it) Bush sr - Gulf war Reagan - Union busting, enemy to every worker Carter - the least offensive of everyone on the list, the best one as a human being, and being the only one to criticize Israel. Ford - never heard his name until last year in junior US history class. Nixon - he chose Kissinger, enough said. LBJ - Vietnam, and just a racist. Only decent thing he did was Medicare and Medicaid. He didn’t even want to sign civil rights act to law. JFK - Bay of pigs Eisenhower - putting the word god on currency, and the pledge. Truman - Hiroshima, Nagasaki, the Cold War FDR - Japanese internment camps (still the best on the list for when it comes to economic reform) Hoover - Great Depression Coolidge - Laissez-faire. Only redeeming factor about him is supporting the women’s suffrage. Harding = HARD to remember what he did. And right before the last 100 years, we have the worst of the worst, that of course being Wilson.
