Are you experiencing dizziness or vertigo? BPPV is a type of vertigo caused by the crystals in your ear. These crystals can get lodged in one of the canals of your ear and cause those awful spinning sensations. The Epley's Maneuver is a common exercise to ease symptoms and slowly get rid of the BPPV. We wouldn't be Rehab and Revive if we didn't put a twist on a classic! Check our Dr. Lin's version of the Epley's Manuever!

during an attack, any movement can be too nauseous to even go through it once. I had my first attack 2 days ago, reading all the tips on self administrated Epley Maneuver, gave it a try and puke so badly halfway through it. I did it twice today and it is helping. So, it seems to be best done not in the midst of an attack but to aid recovery.

I get so sick doing it too. Last week I was out all week because I was dizzy and went awful the whole week after doing it and I puked the second I was done it. It's awful. Hasn't gone away yet and I had to stop and give myself a break because I just couldn't keep doing it feeling so bad already.

I've had several episodes of BPPV over the years. The last one lasted for many weeks no matter how many of the BPPV exercises I did. I finally experimented with avoiding sleeping on my back, and never laying on my back. The exercises suddenly started working. Two weeks ago I had a long dentist appointment where I was on my back for 80 minutes straight, boom, BPPV came back, doh!

Your fun personality helped me feel less nervous so thank you for this. And forgive but I'm going to pass along another KZbin video here for the Epley maneuver - It's by Dr. Danielle Tate. It's a bit more comprehensive and worked for me. I needed more instruction, more steps to make sure I knew what I was doing before I attempted it. Stay well everyone.

I have BPPV in my right ear. Dr did 3sessions of Eplys Maneuver. All 3 were grueling! Sick to my stomach the rest of the day. Had to drive home feeling sick. I have a sensitive stomach. Couldn’t go through it any longer. I have learned how to control it by moving my head in certain directions. Only problem is I cannot lay on my right side, or flat on my back. Because of that, I had to go under anesthesia for cateract surgery. It worked well.

Try to sleep a little upright or reclined. I push the bed into a corner. Bunch up a comforter a stuff it in the corner. Use three pillows. One behind your head, one under your back (for spine support), and the third against one of the walls. I put my head between the wall pillow and the one under my head in the V between the two pillows and keeps me from turning my head while I sleep. Good luck.

So use the bppv.position 3 looking to the floor created a washing spin in my eyes. throwing up sensation was too much.l couldnt complete the manouevre. I have also tested to find which ear but none showed sensation of diziness like previous vertigo. What else can be the cause?. The only maneuver that worked for me (lasted for 5-years) was the half somersault maneuver. Did the exercise once, but you have to sleep/rest/sit vertically or no more than a 45-degree angle for 2-weeks. The BPPV came back a couple of weeks ago. Doing the maneuver is not fun at all and can make you nauseous but once it is resolved, it is great to get back to normalcy. After the 2-weeks of sitting up/angled sleep/sitting, I was able to sleep however, look up/down, under, etc. But during BPPV, none of that is possible.

I will have to try your technique as laying down may be better tolerated. I tried the procedure where you start on your knees and then look up, and tilt your head up for 10 seconds or so, then invert your whole head while coming down on all fours and your neck is tilted 45° to the problem side, (hold for 30 secs or so) then head up to the level position, but still tilted 45, ( back parallel to the floor) and then finally to the vertical position, head still rotated. And while this may only take one minute, OMG, the spinning was so intense I could not even get through 10 seconds. I was waiting for it to get better or subside, but seem to intensify to me. I came very very close to throwing up, so I would definitely say do this on an empty stomach , and when you're not too tired. I did it late in the day after dinner when I was tired. OMG, felt sick for the next half hour. If you can get through it I think it does help. What I don't know and my question here is if you can only stand 10 seconds, is it still effective? I'm sure the longer you can hold each position the better, but if the spinning gets more intense instead of subsides, I don't know how you can get through it. It's kind of a fight or flight thing. The anxiety to move and make it stop overtakes you. It's pretty darn horrible to have this, but I do believe these exercises help. But, be forewarned you may very well end up throwing up, and end up feeling worse before you feel better. I usually get about 2 to 3 episodes of vertigo year, and they are all horrible.

Hi Dr. Lin. You probably developed the dizziness when you dropped back so suddenly as a crystal in your inner ear might have dislodged. Rapid body movements with head turn trigger my BPPV, Epley maneuver settles it nicely, but I have to avoid looking down/ chin tuck for a day or it starts again ( I use a rolled towel as a neck collar to keep my chin off my chest).

Waking up incredibly dizzy from sleep is how it's always been for me, since I started having BPPV at about age 40. Back then I read that it is an issue usually for much older people? I typically have to do Epley several times for success, and this dizziness makes me so incredibly fatigued that I can barely keep my eyes open. I am lounging with a ton of pillows behind me now after waking up with just about the worst case I've had in 20 years. Is sleeping in a weird position the most common reason for this?

I don't know that I really like the idea of a youtube video serving as a cookie cutter approach for all vertigo or all BPPV. While BPPV is quite common, there are several canals, and knowing where those little boogers are is a bit more difficult than what you have demonstrated here. The likelihood of the problem changing from one canal to another with an improper head position or movement is pretty good. If you still have R Posterior Canal BPPV, I believe you missed one final head position in your demonstration which I've seen referred to as the "nose down" position... just prior to returning to the sitting position. I sincerely hope your own issue has since resolved. Often when you move the problem otoliths/crystals from their place in the semicircular canal to "the right place" your body can (and will) reabsorb a majority of them within 20 minutes to 2 hours, but larger ones could take 2 weeks. The crystals are completely normal, of course... but they can mess us up a little or wreak a whole lot of havoc when they end up somewhere else. It seems that if you keep repeating the movement, the problem doesn't get corrected, but your response to it simply fatigues...and the otoliths/crystals are still there - unless you get lucky. Spontaneous healing is possible, too. For the viewers who discover this video: If you think you have BPPV, go see your doctor... get checked out. See if this is what you have and that there's nothing else going on. Ask them for a referral to go and see a physical therapist or someone who can help you get well. Don't try it by yourself. Be well.

This time, I have dizziness with movement only...I can lie down on either side or my back with no issues...in fact that is when I feel the least dizzy. I sought out an Eppley professional again but it did not work this time.. I'm not sure what to do now. The fact that movement seems to be what triggers the unsteadiness leads me to believe it's BPPV but we tried on 2 different visits with no success. I also get so dizzy I become nausious. The first time I vomited for hours and thought I was dying. I know how bad this feels and how scary it can be. I have this happen every few months, but I did find something that helped me a lot. My problem lies in my left ear, sometimes I will do this with both ears just to be sure though. As soon as I feel an episode coming on, I take my bad side earlobe, gently but firmly pull it out and forward so it is nearly flush with my head, the tug in a forward and upward motion. I give it about 10 to 15 good tugs in quick succession. Not hard enough to cause injury, but pretty firmly. Since i have started doing this, i have not gotten so dizzy that i get sick. After tugging my ears, the dizziness slowly fades away. Sometimes it lingers enough that I feel a bit "off" for a little while, but thats nothing compared to how bad it used to get. I usually feel 100% if i take a little nap to sleep it off. I am not a doctor, so I wouldnt take this legit medical advice, but if it helps you out, thats awesome. If not, the worst that happens is you waste ten seconds tugging on your ear lobes.

Soooo, after you do this exercise you won’t suffer from the vertigo anymore?? Bcuz if I will STILL suffer from it, then I have to ask... “What’s the point??”🤷🏻‍♂️ Why would I do a bunch of movements that bring on Vertigo, when it’ll come on by itself anyway? What am I missing...?
@RehabRevive
@RehabRevive 3 жыл бұрын
It all depends on what's causing your vertigo. If you have BPPV (which is what the Epley Maneuver was created for) then it should help to slowly reset those crystals in your inner ear. If your vertigo is caused by something else (for example your vision/eyes and not your ears) then this exercise will probably not work for you. That is why we always recommend seeking a professional evaluation to determine what kind of treatment is right for you!

It's best to have a vestibular therapist check it out. It is possible to have it on both sides but only a trained professional will most likely be able to tell. Highly recommend getting it checked out!

With the caveat that I am not a doctor, it sounds as if your blood pressure may be the problem, in which case you could be dealing with near-syncope not vertigo. See a cardiologist.

This exercise is not a recommendation and should only be done with the approval of a healthcare professional. If you are experiencing vertigo, it might be worth it to get it assessed by a physician. Different positions of the Epley Maneuver help with different types of BPPV. It may also be that your vertigo is not actually BPPV but caused by something else. Physical therapists who specialize in vestibular disorders are fabulous at diagnosing the cause of dizziness and vertigo!

@@RehabRevive I have a similar question. What if I've been going to vestibular rehab 2x weekly for almost two months, after vertigo came on very suddenly while attempting to stretch my sore neck in September (head inversion resembling the "deep head hanging" caused the room to begin spinning). I'm still having BPPV (can't look down at the floor while standing, have to sleep on a huge stack of pillows in an upright position, can't move my head to the left while reclined without symptoms - but roll test provoked my right ear. My PT initially diagnosed bilateral BPPV per the Dix-Hallpike and has done the Epley for both ears during each session. Nystagmus down from 15 seconds to 6 seconds but my ability to lie on my back is unimproved (only right side only tolerance for lying flat). Should I continue on with Epley and Brand-Daroff (when I can tolerate it) or is it possible the wrong canal is being treated?

Make sure you find someone trained to treat vestibular issues. Some general physical therapists can do it or you can look for clinics that work solely with those with vestibular concerns!

Same here. I have tried it 3 times and was down an entire week feeling dizzy headache and fatigue after vomiting the first day and directly after I did the maneuver. I did it with a physical therapist first and then on my own at home because I couldn't stand being sick for hours at a doctor's office. If you haven't fixed it yet, ask for some meds to help with dizziness and nausea. Mine still hasn't gone away yet. I'm not one of the lucky people who it goes away for the first time I guess.

These tests to determine which side you have it don't work for me. I've tried various rolling exercises and they always make matters worse. The best advice might be try to avoid doing anything much at all. Try not to look up or down. Be very careful not to move much when in bed. Slow movements only. Be patient and wait for the darned thing to go away!

@@sackboydrake It works for me but it can take a day or two. Doing these silly exercises have prolonged and exacrebated the problems for me in the past. A big trigger for me is having old pillows that have lost their volume. Replacing the old pillows with puffy new ones really seems to eradicate this condition, and stop it recurring. It's a lesson I seem to have learnt and forgotten more than once!

I have found that THESE movements CAUSE the BPPV, but the regular Epley maneuver helps it go away. It's all about getting those dang crystals/stones back where they're supposed to be, and away from the "tube" they have wandered into - which creates the BPPV. If those crystals/stones don't go back, the vertigo does not go away. The movements you're doing in this video do not get the stones back.
@RehabRevive
@RehabRevive 3 жыл бұрын
Yes as mentioned there are many causes to vertigo nd if epleys the stone technique you mentioned didn't help it could be sensory and this would be a solution. We have an epleys video as well

I'm dealing with this too. Other culprits for this may include cervical problems, blood pressure swings (too high, too low), thyroid (low or autoimmune condition such as hashimotos), low vitamin D, low vitamin B12, low magnesium, too much sodium, caffeine, chronic dehydration, medication side effects (some are toxic to the inner ear) and serious central causes such as MS, brain tumor and aneurysm. (It may be a good idea for anyone who has been suffering unresolved vertigo to inquire of your doctor about an MRI/MRA with contrast to rule out some of the more serious problems).
