You just described my pain to the tee.Hurt knee 8 years ago had surgery Dr said I had torn cartilage and that I would probably have to have knee replacement but I refused .About 3 weeks ago of writing this the pain swelling and popping of knee started to lessen with each day .I researched the area of pain and symptoms that I’ve been having.Your website popped up and let me say : You nailed it!Your description of an injured mcl is spot on to what I’ve been experiencing since 2015.Now I know I just wish I would have researched this before .

Im a full time licensed plumber and about 3 years ago i took out my ACL and meniscus this devistated my career but i never gotten the surgery, i still want the surgery but i cant afford it, so im gonna comment what alot of people want to know that the doctors wont tell you, yes after a few months of rehab you will be able to function, but you need to excercise daily or it will buckle on you when you least expect it, its honestly just basic safety stuff that you need to watch out for, ASK for help if you need it, and dont try to be a one man army it wont benefit you at all, but you should be more than capable to do your trades job after 3 months just take your time with it and use your head more than your muscles

I had a ruptured ACL , also a fractured tibial plateau. The tibia healed without surgery, but I didn’t know about the ACL. My leg buckled and down I went on my wrist. Broken and displaced. Wrist Needed surgery. I wore a custom knee brace and did PT while awaiting ACL surgery for six months. Hoping to put this entire injury behind me.

I’m going onto two weeks with my knee injury. Just found out I have a fracture on my tibial, right beneath the knee cap, both lateral and medial meniscus have a tear, and a complete acl tear along with a small piece of bone cartilage that got broken off which is full thickness chondral loss? Idk but they’re going to grow my cells in a lab then surgical implant them. I’m scared

I fell out of a trampoline at defy 10 feet up in the air . I looked down and the trampoline was gone and I stopped my fall with my right leg. My leg completely came out of my knee. I was lucky when I wiggled my leg for it to go Back in place. I was in horrible pain. My 2 year-old asked me if I was OK. Never have I heard her ask me that. My heart was broken. My first thought was how am I going to feed her, how am I going to go grocery shopping ,cook , wipe her butt etc.. my life is over. . Anyways, so finally, the pain was much better so I figured I’d get up and walk. Unfortunately my leg completely gave out and I fell to the ground. Instantly I knew my life has completely changed forever. I’m waiting to see my Orthopedic in a few days. In the meantime, I want to see my options. I really enjoyed this video , I very much appreciate you taking the time to make this . According to the ER, they think that my ACL and my PCL is gone. I don’t have any pain with my leg gives out but I feel the bones hitting each other and that feels crazy and I just feel like someone kicked me in the knee but the pain goes away. My foot also turns blue when I am on my crutches, so I remain with my leg up on my wheelchair. Would there be a chance for me to give this a try you think? I cannot put my foot down on the floor or else my leg will give out and he goes sideways not front ways..

Hello Dr. I sustained an injury from jumping off the top of a car during an accident three years ago. Initially, I visited a hospital where they diagnosed me with a torn ACL and recomended surgery which i didnt take. Despite this, I could bend my knee fully backward without pain, but I couldn't fully stretch it as before. Later, i visited another hospital for a second opion and noted that my walking pattern was almost normal despite the injury, which led them to believe that my ACL was not torn based on the mri result of the previous hospital. They advised me to undergo physiotherapy exercises. This incident happened about three years ago. Since then, I’ve done some light exercises and have been able to run and perform push exercises, but I still can't fully stretch my leg. Last week, I collided with another player while playing football, and it was quite painful. After undergoing an MRI, the hospital confirmed my ACL is torn and suggested surgery. Currently, I can walk without limping as a week has passed since the incident. I'm concerned about making the wrong decision regarding surgery. I am not a professional football player; I play for fun. I am currently in a foreign country with better medical facilities. Today, I came across your video, and I am considering not having surgery based on your advice. Could you please provide your guidance on this matter? Thank you

As someone who has a complete tear of my ACL, (and tears of the meniscus and LCL) I can tell you beyond all shadow of a doubt, surgery is 100% necessary in my case. My knee buckled the other day, sending me into the most excruciating pain I’ve had since my injury. The ACL is what stabilizes the knee. I had my injury a month ago, and on 12/5 I will finally have surgery. I’m a fairly active person, and I am very fit. I have done prehab religiously, and for the last month, NOTHING has changed. If I don’t have surgery, I will never walk right again. I will never ski again. I will never be back to normal function. I don’t recommend anyone with a total tear like me not having surgery. My MRI said surgery is necessary.

This is such relatable content. I experienced a pop in my knee 10 months ago. Was diagnosed in urgent care with a Baker’s cyst. In follow up with an orthopedic specialist, I received a cortisone shot, which I ended up in ER a week later due to excruciating throbbing pain. X-rays showed nothing remarkable. 10 months later, I still experience pain, swelling and can’t bear full weight on the knee. I believe it’s some form of tear and want to heal naturally with exercises at home. I’m frustrated with going to the doctor and being misdiagnosed.

Hi Natalie, We’re so sorry you have been struggling with your knee pain and the frustrating experience of being misdiagnosed. We know the frustration and pain you have been under and we hope you can find some relief soon. It may be possible that you have a tear but we wouldn’t be able to say for certain without a proper evaluation. A Baker's cyst can form when there's excess fluid in the knee joint, often due to an underlying issue like a tear or inflammation. While it’s possible there could be a tear, we can’t say for certain without a proper evaluation. We have would highly recommend a Virtual Consultation. Our Virtual Consultations are conducted similarly to a Zoom call, and we will send you a link that will automatically connect you with one of our doctors. This consultation will allow us to gain a better understanding of your condition, discuss your medical history, and provide personalized guidance tailored to your needs. Once you have purchased the Virtual Consultation, our scheduling coordinator will contact you to find out the best time and date that works for your appointment. After your appointment is made we recommend sending us an email with your questions, any records you would like to discuss, and a brief description of your medical history at least 24 hours before your appointment. This will help us prepare and ensure we can address all your concerns during the session. After your Virtual Consultation, you will receive a recording of the session, and you will have 30 days from the date of the consultation to ask any follow-up questions regarding your session. You can email us your questions, and our doctors will get back to you at their earliest convenience. To learn more about our Virtual Consultations, including cost, please click here: www.epmanualphysicaltherapy.com/virtual-visit/ In the meantime we do have a couple of playlist that you may find beneficial. You can access it here: “Knee Meniscus Help” kzbin.info/aero/PLJVIPiFvv1mZ9Vh4eRH3UlmMeqOUtB-6a “Baker’s Cyst Help” kzbin.info/aero/PLJVIPiFvv1mauCV7_gEEntBWMvGcQ5OyE&si=9XQImz7xL0xsw3M4 “ACL Knee Pain Injury Help” kzbin.info/aero/PLJVIPiFvv1mY5egV7qX8PHh-kEeL6y1wP Start with one or two exercises, beginning with the smallest range of motion and the lowest intensity. As you feel stronger, you can gradually increase both the range of motion and intensity. It’s best to do these exercises every day throughout the day. Aim to tire out the muscle without losing form or control. Consistency is key. Always avoid working through pain; soreness and mild discomfort are normal, but pain is not. Thank you for your kind words about our content. Wishing you all the best on your road to recovery. We'd love to hear how you are doing as you progress.🙌 Please take care!

My husband was clipped on December 25 by a wild snowboarder while skiing. He could barely walk for months with the swelling but now there is less clicking/popping and now just more achy from time to time. Walking for extended periods was hard. I’ve given him glut strengthening exercises and gentle shallow squats. He had a McDavid hinged knee brace in the early months but stopped wearing after a few months as he started feeling much better. He is much better but his MRI at the end of May was read as a completely torn ACL and both meniscal torn and MCL partial tear. But I was the only one as a chiro who did the basic orthopedic tests and the anterior drawer test was NOT positive. However, medial gapping test was hugely unstable. So I was stunned when the results in MRI complete ACL tear were read. Up to 40% are read wrong? I think it is MCL because the goalie squat was painful for him but is not anymore. So are you saying he should wear this other brace you recommend? Or just continue with the McDavid brace? All the time? He is much better as the knee only aches from time to time. I’ve been advising him to fix the muscle imbalance and strengthen the gluts. Standing in sand on the beach makes him feel unstable. They recommended orthopedic consult for ACL reconstruction and a custom ACL brace but so far two Orthopedics have turned him down. Should we just get this brace to recommend at this point? How long should he wear it for? I talked to him about doing your online knee rehab plan since it would clearly give him a guided program to help him fix his muscle imbalance. He has a history of loving biking and leg press and always had strong quads. That’s why he likely injured a meniscus many years ago. Sadly this was a freak injury on the ski hill.

Trochlear morphology: DeJour type A trochlear morphology. TT:TG distance of 1.1 cm on MRI. Extensor mechanism is intact. Patellofemoral articular cartilage and lateral patellofemoral ligament are intact. Hello, Don't you think persons with torn ACL can develop osteoarthritis if surgery was not performed?
@epmanualphysicaltherapy
@epmanualphysicaltherapy 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jason!!! Great question. Everyone develops osteoarthritis to some degree as they age. The problem is when arthritis develops faster than it should. Arthritis progresses too fast when there is too much pressure in the knee joint. This happens when the quads are overused. People with ACL tears are more susceptible to getting faster progressing osteoarthritis if they don't fix the underlying root cause of the fast progressing arthritis - over-dominant quads. Even for people that do get ACL surgery, they are more susceptible to getting faster progressing osteoarthritis if they don't address the quad dominance. Does that answer your question Jason?

Hi doc, last april i got injury playing basketball, and i tried to heal it at home. And then i think its notnhealing well, so i tried to go to the nearest orthopedics then the ortho said that i should have xray and mri, but then i cant afford to pay for an mri, waited and looking for a public hospital that can do my mri. Story short, i got my mri this july and the result shows the following: 1. High-grade anterior cruciate ligament tear. 2. Complex horizontal and radial tear involving the inferior margin of the posterior horn and root of the medial meniscus. 3. Mild joint effusion with synovitis. 4. Mild marrow edema in the tibial plateau. With this the ortho told me to just apply for a rehabilitation for the strengthening and after that, i told my therapist that i want to play again and he said that i should have my acl to be operated to have my life back. So as i watch your video, and read a comment i want to ask for a opinion to what should i do for my knee. Should i operate or opted for the natural healing method?

Thanks for such a wonderful explanation. I met with a bike accident and my acl got tared .Then I underwent ACL reconstruction surgery 6 years back. A month ago I fell down and my current MRI states that " diffused thickening and increased signal in the ACL" - diffuse increased signal intensity secondary to mucoid degeneration. One of the doctor suggested for the surgery again. But another suggested to proceed without surgery. Does this MRI statement meant partial tear in ACL?
@epmanualphysicaltherapy
@epmanualphysicaltherapy 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Subha, sorry to hear that you're dealing with this knee ACL problem :-( If the MRI report did not explicitly read that there is a tear, even a partial tear, then there is probably not a tear. "Diffuse thickening," "Increased signal," and "mucoid degeneration" are not the same thing as a tear. Those problems are things that could eventually become a tear, but you probably don't have a tear yet. This sounds like you do not need surgery and you need to address the root problem so that you don't end up having a tear. You should check out our library of ACL videos if you haven't already. You can see it here: “Knee Pain ACL Injury Help” kzbin.info/aero/PLJVIPiFvv1mY5egV7qX8PHh-kEeL6y1wP If you're looking for a more comprehensive exercise program for addressing the root problem of knee ACL tears that happen even after surgery, then you've got to learn more about our 28 Day Knee Health & Wellness Boost Program. We hope this is helpful! Good video, gives me hope to heal my ACL. I did a complete ACL tear playing soccer 7 weeks ago when I hyperextended my knee. I found after 3 weeks it felt pretty good, so I played again and did a minor hyperextension. Took a week off and bought a brace like you have there and played 4 games since. Knee feels stable in brace. Did an online session with Jun Matsumoto today, he has had 100% success with healing ACL tears (16/16) with his exercises. The focus is bringing your heal to your hip to shorten the length of the ACL so it can reattach. He wants me to quit soccer for 6 months, tough ask. I will do the exercises and see how I go. I don't see the benefit of the knee brace when not playing sport as my knee is very stable.

Very informative video. I recently injured my left knee & got my results from my MRI...complete rupture of my ACL. I'm confused because I'm not having pain & for the most part I've gain most of my mobility not 100% but I'm very close to it (injured 02/09/2022). Is this something that is considered normal for a complete ruptured ACL? Keep in mind right after I injured my knee I iced it, put a brace(still wearing it) & have continued to elevate it.
@epmanualphysicaltherapy
@epmanualphysicaltherapy 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Haydee! Sorry to hear that you've got a complete ACL rupture :-( But that is great news that you've got nearly all your motion and no pain! That means that you have a chance at either healing the ACL or at least compensating with strength to go on without surgery. This does happen to a lot of people with ACL tears, but usually surgeons push patients right into surgery. Keep going with the brace and start on the recommended exercises. You might even find a local specialist to guide you on healing without surgery. The best case scenario is that you recover adequately and get back to normal again. Worse case scenario is that you get strong and put yourself in the best position to have surgery and recover as quickly as possible after you have surgery. There is no rush if you're feeling good and improving.

How, exactly, does an acl tear heal over time without surgery? Do the torn parts grow back together somehow? Does new new ligament grow? And exactly how does exercise help with that process? Did it tear because muscles were weak? Does strengthening muscles hold the knee in place so the ligament can grow back? Is there scar tissue? Does that make the healed ligament weak and vulnerable to a tear in the future? Sorry for so many questions. All I see is videos on how tears happen and how to do rehab.

Hi Tajci, we don't like to discuss our opinions on braces as each person has a different body composition and what works for one person may not work for another. We recommend buying braces from a store with a good return policy. This way you can buy a few and try them out and pick one that best suits your needs. What we will say is all braces are going to be uncomfortable as they slide down the leg, or might feel tight throughout the day or they loosen. We have a brace help playlist you might find helpful. You can access it here: “Knee Brace Help” kzbin.info/aero/PLJVIPiFvv1mYfCVO5HJsDWdxVDUc3Jbf2 We'd love to hear how you are doing as you progress.🙌 Please take care!

@epmanualphysicaltherapy
@epmanualphysicaltherapy 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Alok! The short answer is yes! Without going through surgery where a surgeon can directly see that the ligament is fully torn, it's hard to know for sure if the ACL is really torn. MRIs are often wrong in diagnosing a full tear. So there's a chance you don't have a full ACL tear even though your MRI says you do have one. In that situation, you can heal as long as you do the right things...the treatment approach we recommend in this video. Make sure to get a brace with hinges! That's SUPER important to heal an ACL!!!

8 months ago I dislocated my patella playing soccer . It was the worse pain ever that I almost fainted . Did an mri 1 month later and results came in that I completely ruptured( Torn) acl and partial meniscus tear . Then 2 months ago I started playing soccer with a knee brace but started getting hip pain so I started doing some type therapy on my hip and obviously knee strengthening on my bad knee and been feeling ok but it doesn’t feel the same playing soccer . I can bend it do squats almost anything and it never hurt or swells so I am confused if I really have acl tear or some other thing going on because people keep saying it’s no way you can play kick the ball hard and have no pain or swell if an acl is torn . But my knee does feel different compare to my good knee you can tell the difference . Anyways on Friday may the 27th 2022 my orthopedic called me that after almost 6 months of waiting for surgery they finally have an availability to do the acl surgery on June 16 th 2022 . And after 8months i feel like getting surgery is the best option just because I’ve done so much workout strengthening on my knee and felt that is still doesn’t feel the same way as normal . I might be wrong but I am looking forward for the challenge on getting my knee back strong so I can play soccer again in a high level

Hey Andy, this sounds like a fantastic situation to be in - getting back to being active again after suffering a patellar dislocation, torn meniscus and torn ACL. It is probably NEVER going to feel like your other knee again...even if you have surgery. So using the "feeling" in the knee compared to your healthy knee as a measure of how your hurt knee is doing might be flawed. Measure it against itself and compare its improvement week to week. And whether or not to get surgery is up to you and what you think you need. Many people get really strong in the right ways and don't get surgery. Many people (like professional athletes) get surgery on a meniscus and ACL. It really is a personal decision based on what you think you need after you've done enough research for yourself. The only question that comes to mind to ask you at this point, is what is the harm in waiting? If you're feeling well overall, playing sports again, getting better...then maybe you've got more improvements left to make before deciding on surgery. You can always delay surgery in case you do get worse and it becomes your only option to help your ACL and meniscus.

I had worked all day on my farm planting trees on steep ground in the late afternoon I turned, fell over backwards to what sounded like a gun shot. My left leg was buckled inside towards my right leg and patella stuck on the outside of the joint. I picked up my lower leg lining it up with the thigh bone and thumped the outside of the patella to get it back in place. My thigh instantly ballooned out and I couldn't bend my leg. 20 minutes late I went into shock, I was by myself on our isolated property. With intense pain I stood up collected my chainsaw loaded the 4wd and took 5 minutes to get into the vehicle. When I went to the doctor he didn't believe I could have done it. The orthopaedic almost ripped my knee joint apart and decided I may have dislocated my knee. Intensive physio had me walking after a couple of months. After 4 months the orthopaedic operated, cut my quads off the patella taking out scar tissue and pieces of meniscus. He then said it was my fault the quad was wasted/detached. 3 more months of intensive physio and had to see another surgeon. Splinters of bone were growing into the joint under the patella which was shaved, bone chios and more broken meniscus was taken out. Not one dr told me anything about the injury which I am sure was acl damage as well as torn quadriceps.

Sorry to hear you've got partial tears in your ACL and meniscus Royal K :-( You've got to get in a knee brace fast and rest a bit so you can let your ligament and your meniscus heal in your knee. Once you can get your knee swelling down, then easy exercise is next. Glute strengthening is important. You should watch the videos in this playlist to get a full understanding of what steps to take next: “Knee Pain ACL Injury Help” kzbin.info/aero/PLJVIPiFvv1mY5egV7qX8PHh-kEeL6y1wP

I tore my acl and decided to not get the surgery and almost 4 months into it my knee starts to feel better it’s more flexible and I was playing basketball I stopped with the leg I tore my acl on and it popped out of place and the pain won’t go away and now I finally decided to get the surgery so it doesn’t pop out of place again.

Thanks for this video! I am in category 3 and torn my front ligament completely, along with both meniscus getting injured and a bone bruise condition in my thigh bone. I started early rehabilitation training in form of weight lifting etc. with great success and I can run and lift fairly in comparison of before my injury, even playing some soccer 4 times after the injury. My biggest issue is that my knee has been sliding out of position about 12 times in 3 months. But it does not happen while I am doing something that requires more force like training and so forth, but when taking a quick step in the opposite direction boom there we have it. So I find it difficult to make a decision about wether surgery or no surgery is right. My concern with no surgery is that my knee might get new injury or get worn out by continues slides of the bones. But I have not been wearing any form of knee support as of so far. I will try that and give my knee more time to recover before I make a decision. Thank you for making me realize this just now. 🎉

Ive had acl reconstruction on both knees, most recently 2 months ago with a partial meniscectomy. Its not easy and the recovery takes time and dedication. Based on your comment if you're knee is buckling regularly you are risking further damage to the other ligaments and meniscus. Living with a torn acl requires a lifestyle change for most people, soccer and other pivoting activities are risking more serious damage. Further damage can cause osteoarthritis down the road and result in a knee replacement. I opted to have surgery both times because I do not plan on living my life in a straight line. Take some time for your decision but please be careful in the meantime.

Would be 6 months before I could go back to work if I had him do the repair. His suggestion is two months of physical therapy and if that doesn't work on knee replacement. What is your thoughts

Hi Sharon! 👋 We are so sorry to hear about your fall and that you have suffered an ACL and Meniscus tear! It's unfortunate that you were told by your healthcare provider that could not assist you at your age. 🥺At 69 years young there is a way for you to heal. It's important to take into consideration the severity of the injury and other medical history factors but it's upsetting to hear they offered no other solution to your situation. We would highly recommend Virtual Consultations. This would give you the opportunity to talk to Dr. David or one of our other doctors one on one about the details of your situation. They could then guide you on the best treatment options and exercises for you and advise you on the next steps to take. If you'd like to learn more about our Virtual Consultation please click here: Virtual visit link www.epmanualphysicaltherapy.com/virtual-visit/ If you don't feel ready for the Virtual Consultation we do have a 28-Day Knee Health and Wellness Boost Program that would be beneficial. The 28-Day Knee Health & Wellness Boost Program is designed to help people have the best chance of avoiding unnecessary surgery, injections, or having to rely on pain medications. This course guides people through exercises and stretches that target key body parts that have the greatest potential to prevent or help with knee conditions like osteoarthritis, meniscus tears, ACL tears, ligament injuries, chondromalacia patella, cartilage problems, and other knee conditions. To learn more please click this link: www.epmanualphysicaltherapy.com/knee-health We also have more free resources available on KZbin. In case you are interested we do have additional information and exercises in a playlist we have compiled for Knee Pain ACL Injury Help. You can check it out here: “Knee Pain ACL Injury Help” kzbin.info/aero/PLJVIPiFvv1mY5egV7qX8PHh-kEeL6y1wP We have another playlist for meniscus issues as well: “Knee Meniscus Help” kzbin.info/aero/PLJVIPiFvv1mZ9Vh4eRH3UlmMeqOUtB-6a We wish you the best on your road to recovery. Hey Doctor. Thank you for this video. I twisted my knee playing basketball. Did not hear a pop. I was able to walk on it after but stopped playing. I’m 48 years old and stay fit. I went to the Emergency ortho near my house - they performed an x-ray and tests. It was a PA but she said I sprained my knee and to wear a brace. I told her my knee buckled walking into the garage step about an hour after injury. I injured my knee at 8am and then went to the orthopedic PA emergency clinic at 2pm. The instability happened at 9am after the injury. Question…she said for me to come back in 6 weeks if not feeling better. She had me jog in place diluting examination and then did some tests. But it’s been 2 weeks and I still don’t feel 100% confidence in it. Wondering if it is an acl or like a grade 2 mcl. I definitely feel pain on the inside portion of my right knee. I wear my brace every where. Only take it off to shower.

@epmanualphysicaltherapy
@epmanualphysicaltherapy 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Merry Red, it depends on how soon after the surgery. It may be normal to limp within the first month after surgery. But as long as you're healing well and going through the treatment after to get your motion and strength back, then the limp should gradually go away.

I had two orthopedic surgergons tell me I had a complete acl tear with no mri done. They did a couple test on me to come to that conclusion. Sure my knee is loose but I wasn't satisfied with their conclusion. I went for a 3rd option and they did a Lelli's Test. It's has a 100% accuracy for complete acl tear. I wonder why more doctors and PT don't talk about this or preform it. I'm currently using a Modvel knee sleeve and I'm beginning my healing process pain free.

My doctor told me that my ACL is completely torn seeing the report of the exam but 5 doctors/physiotherapists made the physical test and always negative! No instability. I didn't have POP, my knee didn't swell, I never stopped being able to walk. The MRI may give a false result? (I did it the day after the injury and apparently the knee had a lot of fluid).

Hi Sunpreet We are so sorry you have been struggling with your ACL injury. We appreciate your kind words and encouragement. We wouldn’t be able to tell you definitively what could be done in terms of recovery as we would need to complete a proper evaluation to determine the severity of the situation and know more about your medical history. Generally, based on the information you have given us, you need to offload your knee as much as possible by using crutches, a walker, or even a cane. Rest your knee as much as possible until the swelling subsides and the pain is manageable. We offer Virtual Consultations if you would like to speak to one of our experts regarding your situation. They can find out the details of your injury and offer you personalized guidance to get you started on your road to recovery. You can learn more about our Virtual Consultations here: www.epmanualphysicaltherapy.com/virtual-visit/ If you aren’t ready for a consultation, we have an ACL Help playlist available, but we highly encourage you to get clearance from your healthcare provider before doing the exercises. Start with one or two exercises, beginning with the smallest range of motion and the lowest intensity. You can check out the playlist here: “ACL Knee Pain Injury Help” kzbin.info/aero/PLJVIPiFvv1mY5egV7qX8PHh-kEeL6y1wP We wish you all the best on your road to recovery!
