UPDATE: BEACN have finally released a frequency response graph for the mic and admitted the "proprietary tuning of the capsule" bit was incorrect. This basically confirms just about every direct thing I've had to say about the mic. Ooooof! I'm not a pro radio guy or anything, I'm just a dope who makes a podcast every week, and my approach to EQ has always been: don't do anything until you hear the frequencies you want to cut, then find them and remove them. Next add any slight alterations you want to add flavor. But...if you end up with a massive 5+dB high/low shelves shelves and cuts everywhere, that's indicative that the mic is incorrect for your voice and you should be seeking a different mic. (This of course will be different in full mixes with multiple instruments where everything is competing with bandwidth). The fact that the mics presets are that aggressive doesn't bode well to me. After watching this full video I'll just say that I'm glad I don't use windows and therefore can't review it because it seems like a headache. Cheers for standing up and not just going along with what everyone is saying for sake of remaining comfortable.

Love your reviews on microphones. I pretty much always check to see if there's a Podcastage review of a mic before buying it so I can compare it to the Podcastage review of the mic I already have. This mic not having a review, plus this video and a few other videos where I've noticed some not-so-great quality, I think I'll stick to my SM7B and WaveXLR. At least the WaveXLR has VST support now, Reaper/ReaEQ 🤘

So full disclosure I'm part of the Beacn testing group and I got my hardware from them a couple months before launch. I'm currently working on my own Beacn Mic review video and I've come to many of the same conclusions about it's out of box sound that Epos has. I don't have an objective or scientific way of generating a frequency response graph of the Beacn Mic since I don't own a measurement mic, tone generator, etc. BUT, to my ears, the Beacn Mic's out of box sound has a certain flavor to it that I've found very hard to work with. It has a presence boost, a highpass, and low-end boost that are all very aggressive. Regardless of the apparent subjectivity or personal nature of this video, I think it's clearly evident throughout that Beacn's mic has a specific sound to it that is hard to work with and requires a lot of processing to really shine. If their objective was to take a dynamic mic modeled after the SM7B and tune it to sound more natural so people wouldn't have to "fix" the mic's naturally "dead" sound signature, they succeeded. The SM7B is a very neutral microphone that NEEDS to be EQed to sound natural to our ears. But it's response to that sort of EQ is why it's so legendary. It's also a step many creators either don't understand or just don't do a good job of it. While I can appreciate their apparent intent, I'd rather they offer a more "direct" mode that gives a less "tuned" sound simply because printing a certain sound signature to a mic isn't going to suit as many people's voices and will make it more challenging to work with. Beacn are targeting professional creators with their products and pricing them accordingly. For $270 you'd expect a microphone to not come with permanent training wheels. Any mic with a ADC/DAC/DSP in it is going to have some sort of correction baked in. Heck, any mic period is going to have tuning done to the capsule via the components connected to it. But I've never come across a mic that had such a "sound" to it applied BEFORE the user gets control of the signal path aside from budget mics that aren't intended for professional use. At the very least, you'd expect a frequency response graph. Ultimately when you pick a mic, you want a mic that sounds either as close as possible to your desired signature OR is just built for the specific job you need it for. Having to do less work in post to "bend the mic to your will" saves time and effort. There's a reason the MKH 416, CAD E100S Lewitt 440 Pure, Neuman U87, SM7B, RODE NT1, Electrovoice RE20, etc are all HIGHLY regarded microphones. They sound PHENOMENAL out of the box and respond incredibly well to post processing. Beacn's Mic being hard to work with for a person of Epos, my, or other industry professionals' level of experience makes it a very hard recommendation for what they're charging. Their audio mixing and routing software is incredible. The Beacn Mix Create is a permanent fixture of my desk. But I also have multiple XLR interfaces on my desk the Mix Create works perfectly fine with (that's the whole point) and as soon as I'm done my Beacn Mic review, it's going back in its box unless they release a tuning update. I know people are going to take Epos's conclusions about the mic as the secondary point of this video. There's not much I could add or subtract from his conclusions outside of the mic. His experience is his experience. But I did want to make it clear that despite my status as a tester of their products, I don't believe they've nailed it with every product and I will continue to suggest improvements for the betterment of those products. I think a big reason Epos is so personally involved in this whole situation is because he, like me, WANTS Beacn to succeed in all their endeavors. We WANT new companies to come out with products that challenge problematic or outdated industry norms, and that's something Beacn has done a great job with to a certain extent. The audio industry is a better thing because Beacn's products exist. But that doesn't make them or their products immune from criticism and I'd never let my affiliation with them in any capacity influence what I say about them.

I've worked as a professional audio engineer for over a decade and a half for live audiences up to over 20,000 people (not including all the people on the live stream), on multi-million dollar sound systems for signed bands, orchestras, speakers, and more and you always cut before you boost. This is equally true for the studio. A lot of the time, the cutting removes the need to boost. While I like how the software provides all of these guides and explanations, which is honestly SUPER cool, the presets are problematic just by looking at it, and not having a solid mic sound before processing where you only need subtle changes to get the sound you want is extremely problematic.

I remember watching the first review videos for the whole BEACN ecosystem, and the first two thoughts I had were: 1) dope looking audio control tech and 2) that the mic itself sounds really mediocre. As someone who's been analogue for my entire time streaming and video editing, I tried to put my bias aside as I really want to recommend to a lot of people not to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on an XLR setup they don't need. I was really hoping this would be THE set up to point at and go "see, go grab this and make your life easier." But the more I watch and the more I listened, the more it really seems that they just... build for this sound type? Which is really weird because I have no idea why in the world you would aim your microphone to purposefully sound this way. It's just weird seeing people based in the audio industry not... understanding audio, or at least trying to market around the poor quality the way they are. And the amount of people talking this mic up like it's an SM7B killer when, if you're wearing monitoring headphones, can obviously tell it's not even close. Thank you for being honest with this, because more people need to turn the spotlight on this deceiving marketing. Especially when so many people are looking for exactly the kind of simple form factor this brings, it's a dangerous trap a lot of people can fall into.

Couple things I just wanted to weigh in on. Also I've been apart of the testing group. I love their mix/mix create and what it can do. I've held off on switching to the mic for a couple reasons. You captured some of it here in the distance and you describe it as boxiness. I find it sounds "tight" as if you're listening through a pin hole. My suspicion is its related to the noise suppression algorithm (because in my years past when I would fix people's mics its often that same plugin/vst that is killing their sound). Its a good call out for frequency response curve, particularly if you're going to get experts to buy in they need some baseline to start their EQs from. All that being said, I have found EQs that work, they're just slightly different than what I've used for MV7, RE320 or SM58. I can get this mic to sound 95-98% as good as those mics (hooked up to GoXLR). In almost all instances I find that I turn the bass boost off, and noise suppression off. I think this mic will still have viability - particularly with its headphone amp, its post processing capabilities, and its USB interface itself - even if it requires a different EQ/chain than most other mics I've worked with. Great video as always, interesting to hear your takes, all the drama aside.

There's another really good reason to cut first, then boost. If you've got EQ then compression, if you haven't tamed/cleaned up the signal already, the compressor can easily make unwanted aspects louder. For example, if you have low frequency hum or rumble on your mic, which is quieter than the voice, any make-up game applied after the compression will make that unwanted sound louder. Ideal scenario for me is EQ cuts > dynamics processing > EQ boosts (if needed).

I used to sell audio gear and frequency response graphs usually just come in the box. How bizarre to not only not include one, but to suggest that you should only care about the sound after processing. Garbage in, garbage out is the saying. The less I have to do to get it to sound good, the better the mic is. An ideal mic would be one that I don't have to EQ at all, so suggesting that you HAVE to EQ it is really just admitting that it isn't a great mic. Which sucks, it has a lot of cool features, but... Yikes. And yes, as someone who does have formal audio training, cut first, boost later.

I think you've cemented your reputation as someone who is passionate about quality, and won't be cowed into silence or obedience. That's a good reputation to have in my opinion. For the reps of a company to make fun of you for being critical of one of their products, and basically call you ignorant, is disgraceful. You have given them praise where praise is due, and have shown that you really want them to succeed. Clearly, their arrogance has cost them a valuable relationship with yourself, and likely a few customers. I, for one, am more inclined to listen to the one critic than the 3000 fanboys who have nothing negative to say. I appreciate your take on this. I was already sceptical of the mic after the first few review videos from you and a couple of other creators. The Mixer and Mixer Create do seem to be as good as the hype indicates, however, it is pretty clear that the mic (and the companies PR attitude) needs some work. I'm in the market for another mic, and you have helped me make a decision on the Beacn Mic, so I appreciate that too.

There are moments where I guess my ears are too tried to deal with the garbage, and the mic sounds like it has potential, but I have no other way to describe this microphone beyond saying that I genuinely have not heard a worse sounding microphone in my life, ever. The compression alone kills me, let alone wage they’re trying to do to the EQ

If a company is not willing to listen to constructive criticism and pull this kind of crap it's an immediate red flag to me and an easy decision to never buy their products. For me, it's not just the bad product, it's the unprofessionalism put forward by the company and it's representatives. Most importantly, thank you for bringing it to attention and not letting small streamers be ripped off by this. $279 is a lot of money to the majority of content creators starting out and making small investments into their work. Hopefully they will see this and not waste nearly 300 dollars on a turd. I have an Elgato wave 3, I love it for what it is, probably the best bang for buck imo, even if the software is a buggy mess at times, although I think windows' audio engine takes a lot of responsibility for that. Furthermore even if they can be slow at times, one of the things Elgato does amazingly is listen to feedback and implement changes Keep it up dude, look forward to what you put out next

Being fully honest, I do own the BEACN mic, and I recognize that it isn't the king of dynamic microphones. That being said, the in-mic EQing and instant monitoring is way too good of a feature for me to pass up. Prior to this setup, I had to run Krisp to make the AC in my room not destroy my stream audio and my voice was getting digitized hard. Being able to use both the expander and the noise suppression, I can now comfortably kick it out of my audio AND monitor things instantly without having to hear my mic picking up the AC fans. I fully admit that the mic isn't the best sounding mic on the planet, but the in-mic EQ, noise suppression and expander all processing and pumping out the headphone jack on the back has been a game-changer for me. All of that being said, I do feel like you're taking a lot of this personally and this was a pretty emotional video. I obviously haven't seen all the banter back and forth on Twitter, but for what it's worth, in your prior BEACN commentary and even after this video...even if I think you're going a bit overboard on the negativity due to an emotional response to feeling called out... I still think you're a great content creator and will obviously continue to watch your videos with excitement. Is $269 a fair price for a microphone that has built in EQ, noise suppression, expander, headphone amp, nice mounting features and a really clean look? Well by your own admission the $100 Deity mic sounds as good (or slightly better than) this $269 one. Are all those features worth $169? Maybe to a lot of people, yes. Maybe to someone who is much more familiar with using alternate software to EQ their mic and doesn't mind not doing some extra legwork and wiring to create the same experience...that answer is no. But as an all-in-one package that truly doesn't have a competitor in the space that I've seen, it's really hard to just throw the entire product away as a "shitty mic", when in reality the mic is more than capable. Just maybe not as capable from a pure microphone perspective as other pure microphones. I fully accept that, but the sum is greater than the parts to me. I ditched a Rode Procaster, a GoXLR and my Arctis Pro Wireless headphones (like $1K worth of products) to replace with the BEACN Mic, Mix/Create and Beyerdynamic DT77x Gos, and my experience as the user of these products has been much better than the previous configuration. And I can stream and record content now with my fan running without my voice getting totally shredded. And I think the mic looks dramatically better on camera now from what I was running before. I know this video was 99% about the actual mic hardware and the silly presets (which I actually didn't even notice existed), and defending yourself as a quality reviewer of products...I just think the emotional response isn't the best of looks. It feels like while you almost backhandedly say the software is good, you're essentially damning the entire product because of some Twitter beef, some negative comments from fans, and a desire to be right about something more than to be fair to the entire product offering. Sorry for the long as F response. No matter what, I'm still a big fan.

I spent an entire month dissecting this mic and my approach to EQ and mic processing to figure out what I was wrong about. I lost a lot of sleep over this. It's completely derailed my entire production schedule for February, and I was completely treated like shit by both BEACN staff and their fans. It IS personal. This video is half "here's why the mic sucks" and half "here's why the company sucks." A lot of what I referenced were things happening to other people as well, and a lot of it goes back to the GoXLR days where PLENTY of creators have had bad experiences with KT. It's out of the ordinary because this entire experience has been well beyond out of the ordinary for every experience I've had in my career. No, I don't think this microphone is worth $169 more than any mic, especially when the Elgato Wave exists and there's plenty of free VST suites out there (or baller ones if you're spending those savings) anyway. Their software is more mature, more stable, they make calculated decisions and listen to feedback in a rational way (didn't used to, do these days). And you can still control it via the Mix. So yes, I'm damning this product for what it is and what the company is doing. That's how this works. It's cool that you like it and find the features compelling. That was the conclusion of my original review: Mic sucks audio quality-wise, but the software stack is awesome and I look forward to the interface where their crappy mic is removed. That's also my conclusion here, a month later, after many more hours of researching, consulting audio buddies who know more than me, and tinkering with it constantly. Appreciate the comment.

I totally get it, especially much more so now that I see it also boned up your own planned content just to get the record straight on all this. Here's to hoping all this ends up with better product offerings from them now that there's a strong and respected voice making its faults loud and clear. I'd actually love for a BEACN Mic 2 that's targeted more for high end audio versus Twitch streaming with the same or better features and a better capsule. Thanks again for everything you do for the content creator community, man. And apologies if my comment above added to the noise in your life right now.

It's fascinating... Every single review I've seen on this mic, I walked away thinking, "I'm not convinced about the sound." I certainly didn't think it sounded better than the Wave 3 in ANY review where someone did a comparison side-by-side. That said, I get their decision making in many ways. They are going for a part of the market where Elgato plays - creators and streamers who have a bit of money but aren't interested in the technical difficulty of stepping up into the next level of quality and complexity you'd get in the Shure SM7B market. I think realistically, I'm their target audience - I have disposable income to play around with streamer gear as a hobby and I'm not keen to get into the enthusiast technical space with audio.

Yes! Thanks for making this video! I've watched a good number of videos about the Beacn mic (and the whole suite of Beacn products) saying that it's the "GoXLR killer!" and also "better than the SM7B!" and owning both, I cringe so hard. First, to your point about the tuning of the mic: it sucks so bad that they did a very subjective tuning to the acoustics and harmonics of the mic. Like many other commenters said, a mic should be tuned as flat as possible to allow the user to make it sound however they want. If they wanted that boomy car stereo tuning, they should have just included it as a preset in the EQ/dynamics settings instead of baking it into the mic's properties. This is why it isn't, and can never be an SM7B. Second, it would have made more sense if all these strip processing capabilities and the DSP itself were available in a piece of hardware other than the mic, with an XLR input. This is why it isn't, and will never be, a GoXLR killer. The GoXLR isn't just a mixer, it's also a pretty good ADC/DAC with a DSP. So, if I already have a decent mic, I won't be able to get into Beacn because it's forcing me to use a crappy mic with no way around it. Also, man, that close-minded echo chamber of a bro culture that folks around Beacn have is just painful. It's the Dunning-Kruger effect in full force and their elitist-ignorant worldview is just such a goddamn shame when it's for a clearly broken product you're just trying to make better with honesty and objectivity.

Shotgun mics should not be used indoors, or at least not within relatively tight spaces. One problem is a strong rear lobe, so you need to point the back of it at a powerful diffuser or noise trap, otherwise you'll likely be catching the longest reflection chain there. The second problem is that cancellation lobes are only valid for infinitely distant sources, the way the geometry works out, what you get instead is a weird comb filtered room sound, which some listeners will find disturbing. They are outdoor mics, where neither of these problems occurs. Why were you thinking of getting a shotty?

I generally suck at audio quality/EQ (maybe my ears suck), I just route things well and make it work. I didn't think this mic sounded anything special either but figured I just couldn't tell the difference. One of the videos you've shown of a guy targetting specific frequency ranges and reducing them is my latest improvement on EQ that I've done and I no longer overboost or mess with the mic too much. A microphone is supposed to be good out of the box and the EQ is there to remove the bad stuff that makes things sound worse, just like you said, and not to magicly distort your voice into something completely fake/different.

So glad you’ve come out and said this I’ve been sent both the mic and mix create not in time for launch date. I didn’t think I’d like the mix create but love it the mic I just do not like the sound of. I stand by with headphones, speakers and mics if you don’t like the out of the box sound then it’s not for you. Processing/eq should be subtle yes it’s needed but if you don’t have anything you like before you won’t like it after. As far as I’m concerned it needs to sound like a $280 dollar dynamic mic the processing and routing although great is only an extra and a usp but it doesn’t come close to sounding like it’s cost, as soon as I go back to my re320 and dynacaster I just don’t even want to use the beacn. May I ask what do you think of the real time monitoring I feel there’s some funky mess almost like when you monitor yourself through a daw at 32 or 64 samples your voice is in time but there’s this metallic/robotic sound to my voice. Almost like dsp is adding a very slight latency compared to my io24 which sounds great with monitoring with the dsp turned on.

I'm not an audio pro by any means - just an enthusiast on cheap/budget gear loving to experiment with processing. And to be honest, my high pass filter on my pretty high voice is at 85Hz, with the biggest cut being -3 dB at 1kHz due to high nasality. Boosts? Max 2.5dB at 130Hz, applied after initial compression, to get more warmth. All of that on Mackie EM-89D which you can get for like 1/3rd of the beacn? Add some Arturia Minifuse or something similar and you can have a great sounding, maybe not so broadcasty looking, setup for half of price. If you want to go cheaper and have more bass, you can swap that EM-89D for XM8500, and you're golden. For processing - you can use something like Equalizer APO or another VST host with bunch of really high quality free VST plugins like Melda suite or TDR and Analog Obsession stuff. Even for these exciter/bass booster things - PreBOX from Analog Obsession gives cool results. If you are gentle with it, not going 100% on the knob, obviously. I really think this beacn mic is just bad, even terrible. And the software with all the awesomeness regarding zones etc. don't justify the price when you have so much free great sounding things on the Internet. All that is just my opinion, and I am perfectly fine with people disagreeing with me on this field. After all of this huge text I did here, I must admit - your OG Beacn Mic videos were disliked by me, but that one is great and I'm happy to see you as a creator I follow for a long time coming back and admitting all these things and properly assessing this mic. Great job, Adam!

I believe, since they market this mic to streamers and creators, they have made the mic to match the SM7b in it's highly compressed broadcast sound. If you listen to the Sure in a treated studio (which is what it was meant for), it is leaps and bounds above the beacn. I believe they matched the mic to sound good through software and OBS, while the SM7b is dumbed down naturally from broadcast compression for streaming. I hate this comparison everyone is doing. The software suite seems to be the main draw. I would even think about buying the software standalone if they offered it.

I'm not an audiophile or an engineer. I'm pretty non-discerning about audio on streams and KZbin (I don't mind the boomy NPR/podcaster sound and about the only things I actively notice are clipping and peaking...I'm an audio luddite. :p). That being said, I find this stuff interesting. The Beacn mic samples I've heard (and I watched most of the review videos) haven't been flat out awful, but it's pretty wild how different it sounds depending on who's using it. I've seen it sound terrible. I've watched Harris basically eat it and get it to sound okay (again, to my untrained ears). I've never really heard it sound great. I think their marketing was brilliant. They went after the streamer crowd (who are also by and large not particularly discerning about audio quality as an evening spent on Twitch proves) and made a mic that looks like an SM7B only with RGB for people who wanted an SM7B without having to drop $600 or more on the mic/interface and potentially a cloudlifter. I suspect that by nailing the aesthetic the audio quality basically became secondary for most of their customers. And now you get that purchase bias where people who dropped $280 need to defend their choice to the death. That's already bad enough in the gaming and streaming space... :p I'm glad you came out and shared all of this. I have no horse in this race, but I think it's great to get a counter opinion and this was well articulated and the samples definitely back up what you're saying.

I actually have opposite opinion to Epos. Don't choose a mic that sounds great to you. The way you normally hear your own voice is via bone conduction, and this is how you're conditioned to believe your voice should sound like, to be content with. This is not how others hear you. So when you choose a mic, you'll tend to choose one that is probably too boomy. Have a trusted person listen to you via different microphones and decide for you instead. I've also noticed people have particular gripes when the resonant peaks of their particular headphones coincide with a maybe somewhat diffraction laden range on the microphone, which is maybe... a little unfair towards that mic?

"Most X have the SM7b" is a completely skewed and inaccurate statistic. It's a popular mic, but "most" is not accurate. That doesn't make sense, that's not a rational decision. You want to get something set up that sounds great and stop touching it so you can focus on your stream. But yes, I agree with the rest of what you say!!

@@EposVox yes i agree with you...i meant more situational. for example.. alot of audiophiles and just audio gear reviewers they'll do videos showcasing all these cool microphones but when its time for them to work on a Project, Stream, Long Form Video that is for themselves..they pull out the tried and true Shure SM7B or The Electro Voice RE20. Heck... Take Camera Reviewers..they'll tell you to Buy a Cheap Canon Camera while filming themselves on SONY A7s IV !!! nothing is wrong with that..i'm just saying viewers notice... i know people that bought the shure SM7B just cause Joe Rogan uses it. My main point is ppl want to know what the Professionals USE and WHY they USE THEM. Best Cheap USB Mic in my opinion is the HyperX Quadcast... but why would someone leap from Quadcast to BEACN. Why Not Shure MV7 with USB AND XLR.

HyperX Quadcast is stellar!! And yes, people obsess over WHAT people use and never actually learn WHY - which means they don't know how to use it or why the choice was made. Then a company coming along to copy some of the worst implementations of that mic to appeal to those people is just either being dumb or treating customers as dumb.

@@EposVox Is the HyperX Quadcast or the Elgato Wave 1/3 (only difference are buttons) better? I thought that the Beacn microphone would be better than those microphones, but apparently it's terrible even though it didn't sound bad in the review on Alpha Gaming in the comparison. The Razer Siren V.2 Pro stood out as the bad sounding one in that comparison. How would you rate these microphones in sound quality alone without the price influencing it? And also the Shure SM7b. Is the Beacn worse than the Blue Yeti? Worse than the Blue Snowball? Worse than an iPhone microphone? I've watched someone record their voice on an iPhone microphone and it sounded better than the Razer. Or maybe that's because the Razer got compared to professional microphones and the iPhone microphone wasn't.

Probably blew their burndown chart and had to budget the capsule last minute. And figured they could gaslight it long enough to release a beacn mic 2. They should have just released the beacn mix alone first in that case.

I don't know how you find a capsule that bad, if it is indeed the capsule's fault at all? which i doubt. Like a lot of $12 store brand microphones, and random $6 capsules from Ali (without bulk discount) don't have nearly as much colouration unless you're trying to go at them extremely loud.

My goodness, a 6 dB boost at 50Hz?! I have a high pass for 50Hz on my effects chain AT ALL TIMES 'cause it tends to get way too rumbly down there even with my bright voice and it makes handling noise or accidental bumps super infuriating. Also, boosting too much with eq's especially before making fine adjustments, is like slapping a final color grade onto your image before doing retouching. Like what?

I love the goxlrr mini here. it has a lot of uses outside of streaming, such as mixng 2 pcs or watching tv and a computer on the same speakers. this new usb stuff is so limited to streaming and for the money you can just get a set up that does more things.

Thanks for the in depth video regarding this! As someone currently using a Rode Podmic for streams or recordings, I was thinking of an upgrade and I’m glad that this wasn’t it (even as good as it looks). What would you recommend looking for outside of the industry standard?
@EposVox
@EposVox 2 жыл бұрын
Rode’s Procaster is highly underrated tho I’m not sure how worth it it would be to upgrade to it. You’re already at that point where you’d have to take a significant jump to really upgrade. RE320, AT BP40, or the Procaster would be next steps IMO if you’re wanting to avoid the typical RE20 and SM7B

all the company versus youtuber issues aside... we all know this mic will be used for Twich or youtube.. for podcasts and gaming streaming... so, aside from a really bad mic's i mean like on $40 gaming headsets... aren't all mic's from decent brands, for $70+ already overkill? yes, for singing, this is clearly not ideal.. but for speaking? i mean it will be compressed by either KZbin ot Twich anyway...
