A recommendation... before doing your surfacing, carve out your pockets for your resin, leave the wood on the CNC, pour your resin and then do your surfacing and cutouts. It will save you the hassle with sanding off the spilled epoxy.

drkline69, That's a great tip! Pouring the resin after carving the pockets can definitely make the process cleaner and save some time on cleanup. Thanks for sharing your insight!

How did you finish the wood, with a clear finish, does the clear finish stick well to the cured epoxy? Thanks. Great demonstration of epoxy techniques.
@IDCWoodcraft3 ай бұрын
johnpaulflippin9097, I'm glad you enjoyed the demonstration! When finishing wood with a clear finish over cured epoxy, it's important to choose a compatible product, as most clear finishes adhere well to cured epoxy when properly prepared. Just make sure to sand the epoxy surface lightly for better adhesion before applying the finish. Happy woodworking!

My only recommendation is once you have touched off, cover the work piece with painters tape, cut your pockets on your board and shapes and then pour your epoxy. Epoxy shrinks as it cures so there will be high points on the edges. Then surface and do your round overs. Then remove your pieces and lightly sand. Syringes are a good idea for applying epoxy to narrow pockets.
@IDCWoodcraft3 ай бұрын
pchrosto46, That’s a great tip! Using painter's tape can definitely help manage the epoxy and get cleaner edges. Thanks for sharing your insights!

It's kinda weird how, every time I'm thinking about trying to do something new with my CNC, all of a sudden there is an email from Garrett about that very subject! I've just spent the last few days trying to figure out what epoxy to use, how the color is mixed in, etc. and here's a video by another beginner showing me how she is learning too! Liberty is a great presenter, she and Juliann are fun to watch! I hope they do more videos soon! I do have one newbie question. Many people mention using a wood sealer before pouring epoxy or using paint, do you recommend this and if so, what types?
@IDCWoodcraft3 ай бұрын
StubbsMom, It's great to hear that the timing of the emails and videos has been so helpful for your CNC journey! Using a wood sealer before pouring epoxy is definitely recommended, as it helps prevent the epoxy from soaking into the wood and offers a smoother finish. Some popular options are shellac or polyurethane sealers, which work well in sealing the surface. It's always good to test on a small area first to see how the wood reacts. Happy crafting!
