Hey isn't it cis Golgi that's facing towards the ER? So if in case some ER proteins go out of the ER they're in that space b/w ER and CIs Golgi right? Or will it travel to the other side of the Golgi(trans-golgi) and does that protein gets recognised there?

So, if the KDEL tag is supposed to signal confinement of a protein to the ER, then it must not be very efficient if there are conditions where you get inappropriate transfer out to the golgi. Are there measurements on how frequently the COP1 quality control mechanism has to operate, i.e. for any given ER resident protein, what is the likelihood that it's going to get shipped out "by mistake," and have to be returned via the COP1-dependent mechanism? Are there situations where such mistakes in targeting become more likely, e.g. ER stress, etc.?
