In this interview excerpt from May 9, 1989, Eric Carr, KISS's second drummer, tells the interviewer not to print how he really feels about Paul Stanley’s 1989 solo tour. Eric says Paul didn’t “break any new ground” on the tour and Paul now has a new appreciation for being in KISS.
The video features photos of Eric along with captions that relate the photos to audio excerpts from his interview.

Eric Carr was a great soul...just a genuine and sincere person. What he's saying here about Paul's solo tour is completely on point. If Paul was trying to see if he could make it as a solo artist without KISS, then he would have played completely new material. That set-list was basically a KISS concert with a few deeper cuts.

I was at what I believe to be the last show of the tour, Hollywood, Ca. Eric and Gene were in attendance. I think Eric's assessment of the tour was spot on. I know my friends and I, all KISS fans, went because it was a chance to see Paul in a smaller venue. We had no idea what to expect but were very happy to hear songs from his solo album and KISS songs that hadn't been played in a long while. However we were bummed that Gene and Eric didn't sit in with the band for encores. I always felt Paul did the tour because there was down time and he wanted to get out and play some music. Secondly was to light a fire under Gene.

That would make sense that Eric and Gene were there as they were cutting demos with Tommy Thayer for the Hot in the Shade album in LA at the time. I don't know if it lit a fire under Gene. Eric Carr was a genuinely, nice guy! I had the pleasure of meeting and knowing the family back in the mid 80's up into the early 2000s... And the Paul and Gene stories ranged from insane to hilarious! They were not easy guys to work with by any means. Eric confirmed many of the things Ace and Peter have always said and Paul and Gene deny to this day; big egos, controlling as hell, money hungery and manic at times! Did you know that on Hot in the Shade, they wouldn't even let Eric write and sing his own song. It had to be a song that they wrote or co-wrote and then told him how to sing and perform it? His first vocals on a kiss album, and they controlled every aspect of it. He was thrilled to have a song, but he was a little bummed out they wouldn't let him sing one of his own, and Eric had some great material. I think Paul and Gene were always afraid that someone might outshine them in some way or steal they're precious limelight... Sad! And as much as Paul and Gene tell this great tale of how they loved Eric and were there for him through his illness and after his passing, the family tells a bit of a different story. They were more concerned with moving on and finishing the Revenge album, Eric was kind of marginalized and felt pretty horrific about their treatment towards him, and even his future in Kiss if he had made a full recovery.. It definitely didn't sound like Paul and Gene where the brothers in arms they made themselves out to be.. Their career and financial future was always put first before anything or anyone else. And after Eric's passing the Caravello family was long forgotten, even after the passing of his mother years later. They were some of the nicest people you would ever want to meet, but Paul and Gene overlooked them for dollar signs.. Paul now says that he has regrets about the way he treated Eric during his illness.. I hope that's true and not just another way of covering his A$$ to save face like just about everything else that comes out of his mouth about the shadowy past of Kiss. Sorry for the long reply, this little snippet just brought back a lot of memories..

It's so terrible that Eric was scared of Paul hearing this interview, after 10 years of being in Kiss he should have been able to say anything he wanted, but he was still being treated as a mere employee. This just confirms the bad things that we've heard over the years about Gene and Paul.
@BaronVonBielski

It was actually pretty insensitive of Eric giving this type of of interview basically slagging his co-worker by saying it really wasn’t a solo tour. He certainly had nothing nice to say and if he did compliment him it was in a way that also was insulting. Saying he sounded better than he has in awhile (compliment) because he was actually singing which alludes to saying he hasn’t been actually singing on KISS’ latest tours. It’s been said that Eric badly wanted to play on the solo tour, but he basically says people only came to hear KISS songs and he didn’t break any new ground. Well then that would of been doubly so had Eric Carr been his drummer. The reason he didn’t want it printed was because it was some pretty disloyal content. It would have offended me.

Gene was not to blame, I think. Remember listening to this interview on KZbin awhile ago, Eric is much more open here about Paul Stanley and I remember from the full version of this interview Eric mentioned the band Hari Kari that he was managing for a bit.
@ericcarrrevealed
@ericcarrrevealed Жыл бұрын
This interview is from 1989, so he was no longer working with Hari Kari by that point. From what I understand, Eric came back from the European Crazy Nights tour and found out that Hari Kari began working with someone else while he was on tour. Eric ended his relationship with Hari Kari and also split up with his girlfriend, Charisse, who was the bassist and sometime lead singer. Sometime in early 1989, he reconnected with Carrie Stevens, who Eric met in November of 1987 at the beginning of the Crazy Nights tour.
@dragonfly1694
@dragonfly1694 Жыл бұрын
@@ericcarrrevealed I thought Eric ended his association with Hari Kari because he broke up with Charisse Texeira when Carrie Stevens came back on the scene, not the other way around. Eric was on tour with KISS when HARI KARI recorded their 2nd '89 demo & had no hand in it's production, apart from helping finance the studio sessions booked prior to him going on the '89 tour, which is when he & Carrie reconnected. But HARI KARI were not able to secure a record deal & Eric's management Streetgang Productions ended their association with the band when Eric broke up from his relationship with bassist Charisse after the '89 'Hot In The Shade' tour, not the previous 'Crazy Nights' tour you mentioned. Hari Kari then signed to another management for a brief period but the band split not long after. Eric's analysis of Paul's solo tour is correct, Stanley simply went out solo while riding the coat-tails of the KISS legacy to appease his ego as well as send a cryptic message to a constantly missing-in-action Gene with all his Hollywood & record label distractions, that Paul was willing to go out on the road without him. He would take Eric & Gene's criticisms to heart & remedy this for his next eventual solo tour decades later in 2016, backed by a lacklustre solo album of all-new original material in 'Live To Win'. Unfortunately Paul's 1st solo tour would prove to be fatal for Eric Carr's position in Kiss, as it essentially became Eric Singer's Kiss audition to replace him, & the way Kiss mishandled his illness was both tragic & immoral. Long live the Fox

From what I understand, Paul and Eric were never "buddies" like Eric and Gene were. Yes, Eric wanted to go out on tour with Paul, but Paul wanted a clean break from KISS for his solo tour. If Eric went on the tour, it would be like half of KISS stayed home and the other half went on tour. I think Eric was unhappy about not joining the tour, which just made the relationship between to two a bit more tense.

@@Playitstraight44- Even if Eric beat the cancer and went back to KISS, he'd have been fired due to the reunion of the band. And Eric couldn't wear Peter's makeup because back in the day, Eric was the Fox. Gene and especially Paul wanted the original lineup. Eric could have teamed up with Bruce and started a new band. And they'd be even more than talented than the KISS lineup with Eric and Tommy. I never went to any concert for the visual stimulation. It was always the music. KISS is now nothing more than a traveling musical Independence Day show. Very sad way to end a career.

@@stanleybroniszewsky8538 I believe every word you said. I haven't seen the band live since their original farewell in 2000. You know Tommy and Eric always justify their decision to wear the makeup because they said anyone else would and that its no big deal. I'll tell you the difference. Ace and Peter made that makeup famous while they were splitting $10 a week with the other band members... for YEARS. So its always going to be apples and oranges between them and the fill ins. Alot of them didn't write the songs they are singing, like Paul can say he did. And he is the one that sings them with his band KISS. They usually sound like shit. Paul Stanley knows how to sing, especially back then. Plus their was a limited number of tickets available for those shows. Eric Carr knew that Eric Singer was going to replace him after Paul was impressed by Singer during his solo tour. I man seriously...unlike Eric Carr Eric Singer was more a follower who did as Paul instructed, as opposed to Eric Carr who wanted to do his own stuff by the late 80's. Really sucks tat Eric Carr got such a freakishly rare cancer. What the future would have been like if we still had Eric Carr? Miss the guy as a fan of his talent completely. I just know that career ruining intel that Ace has on Gene and Paul is related to the mistreatment of Eric Carr towards the end of his KISS career when Eric Singer came into the picture before the terminal cancer diagnosis.

Paul's solo tour is when Eric realized he was going to be kicked out of the band. Eric Singer said Carr literally said to him at the show in New York that you're the one who is gonna replace me. He was also mad that Paul was letting Singer put all kinds of crazy fills and double bass parts to the old Kiss songs because (and this comes directly from Singer) he WANTED to play the old songs like that and Gene and Paul wouldn't let him. Paul showcased how good of a drummer Singer was, but when it came to Carr, he held him back.

Glad you're enjoying the interview excerpts! The entire interviews are easily found on KZbin. Each are about 45 minutes in length and are just the audio. The purpose of Eric Carr Revealed is to provide short topics that Eric speaks about along with corresponding visuals to add to the depth of information. Original interviews include a lot of "fluff" that doesn't provide any insights, such as Eric reading the weather on the radio, or the a fanzine interviewer asking questions that aren't pertinent, such as the interview asking Eric to connect with Gene and asking Gene to sign items for a giveaway. Seriously, that's what in some of these interviews. Basically, I'm cutting out parts that are a waste of time, adding the visuals, and making short videos that are easily digestible. Two to three minutes of Eric Carr interviews each week makes these interviews more accessible for most people, as opposed to investing 45 minutes

Eric reasoning was ridiculous. People go to see performers playing songs they know, not stuff they’ve never heard before. A test for Paul would be releasing a new album that fans could buy and fall in love with, and then touring on that material, not just touring on totally unknown music. Paul had already released a Solo album and it was amazing. He could have toured on that material alone.

@@ericcarrrevealed Perhaps he meant Paul was focusing more on the vocal aspect of the performance, not jumping around as much. It seems like with KISS he's always been more about leg kicks and silly poses than putting forth a good vocal performance. It probably contributed to the decline of his voice. If he'd have focused more on taking care of his voice and less on shaking his ass he probably wouldn't be relying so heavily on backing tracks at this point.

Sadly Eric was naïve. Paul didn't do that tour to see if he could go on without KISS. Paul did not give up on KISS and never has. He wanted Eric Carr gone. They couldn't stand each other and Paul never wanted to go on the road or record with Eric again. They did not say one word to each other on the Hot in the shade tour, and Paul certainly wasn't about to go back into the studio with him. They didn't even speak at the God Gave Rock and Roll to you video shoot. Paul did that solo tour to break Eric Singer in. There is a reason they played nothing but KISS songs. He already knew Singer was going to replace Carr and so did Gene. By the time that tour was over most KISS fans knew who Eric Singer was and knew what a monster drummer he was. I feel bad for Eric Carr. He was side blinded and deceived by Gene as well. His remarks saying that Gene said this too or thought this too.. made my heart sink. Gene was just going along with it and agreeing with Eric. Gene knew what was going on and was totally in on it. There is no way Gene Simmons didn't know what was going on.
