As a 70 year old I just love watching you two enjoying the music we listened to as teenagers. The one thing that always stands out to me is how you two analyze these songs, because back then we just listened to them and enjoyed the music. Maybe it is because we were so stoned at the time.

Layla came out in 1970 when he was in a band called Derek and the Dominoes. Cocaine is originally by J.J Cale from 1976 and was covered by Clapton and put on his solo album Slowhand released in 1977. Another great reaction. Peace and love.

"Cocaine" is a song written and recorded in 1976 by singer-songwriter J. J. Cale. The song was popularized by Eric Clapton after his cover version was released on the 1977 album Slowhand. "Layla" is a song written by Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon, originally recorded by Derek and the Dominos, as the thirteenth track from their only studio album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs (1970). J. J. Cale is a well renown singer songwriter of the 70s - and had another major hit with Clapton singing his songs "After Midnight". I would recommend playing some J.J. Cale - and the song I would recommend is "The Sensitive Kind".

J.J. Cale's original version was actually the first version I ever heard. It appeared on his Troubadour album, which we had at the radio station as a promo copy. Even after hearing Clapton (and others) cover it, I still prefer the original JJ Cale version. "After Midnight" appears on JJ's Naturally album. There's also a couple of songs on the Naturally album that were covered by others (though most don't know it). There's "Call Me The Breeze", covered by Lynyrd Skynyrd, and "Bringing It Back", covered by Kansas.

@@pulsarlights2825 Yeah, well Clapton and the rest of the "white boy" British blues artists from the late 60's - early 70's were responsible for reviving the careers of many American bluesmen who were broke because their music was out of style in the U.S. at that time. Many of the greats, like Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, etc. were grateful for all their new British fans and went to England to record and tour with Clapton, the Yardbirds, Steve Winwood, Rory Gallagher, Ronnie Wood, etc, etc.

Layla was about George Harrison’s wife Pattie Harrison, the wife of Beatle George Harrison. Eric Clapton was in love with her and she eventually left Georgia for Eric. Eric and George did remain as friends.

Story time: over a decade back I went out with some friends to go play some pool. After getting our drinks and table(next to the women's restroom) I walk over to the juke box as I always do. Made a few selections, with this song being the second pick. I ended up at the juke box for a while with my first selections playing. As soon as this song starts I hear everyone at my table laughing as they look over at me. When I eventually get back to the table I ask what was so funny. Well, apparently there was a table of girls who had been taking turns going to the restroom by the pair and the one female friend in our group went in out of curiosity. And they were doing blow off the counter, all the while this song was playing. My friends thought I had done it on purpose but it was merely a happy accident 🙃

This is really an anti-drug song. Toward the end, the writer, JJ Cale, said: "Don't forget this fact, you can't get it back." Cocaine. The song points out that you use Coke if you are down, up, whatever the situation is, and with addiction, that is certainly the case. After founding the rehab center Crossroads in Antigua, he said he didn't even want to play this song because many felt it glorified the drug's use.

Clapton is one of the 2 or 3 greatest guitarists of all time. His blues in John Mayall was extraordinary and his created of blues-rock with Cream in the mid-to-late 60s was visionary. That is even before the 70s and Layla etc. Crossroads has perhaps the greatest guitar on it ever.

This is another JJ Cale song that was covered by Clapton (After Midnight is the other). Eric was a big fan of JJ Cale. And funny enough JJ Cale was about to quit the music industry because he wasn’t getting any bites on his songs; that is until Eric heard After Midnight and covered it. Suddenly everyone wanted to know who this JJ Cale was and started buying his albums, which he couldn’t give away. JJ Cale was from Oklahoma, with that laid back Okie music style. Clapton (live versions are best) he is considered by many the greatest guitarist if all time, as one of the pioneers in the 60s, but then again there are a few who stand with him as being among the greats! But he is definitely a Genius on guitar for sure and one of the earliest guitarists to rediscover and introduce the Blues to the mainstream aswell as Rock and some great ballads aswell.. ABSOLUTE LEGEND! Along with Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert King, BB King, Jeff Beck, and Peter Green and a handful of others at that time... But clapton was up at/sharing the top of the pile at his best for sure..

FYI Clapton wrote and released Layla in 1970. Cocaine was written by J.J. CALE in 76 and covered by Clapton in 77. Its an ambiguous anti drug song. There is no connection between his love for Patty Boyd, George Harrison's wife and cocaine.

Eric Clapton, a long history with several 60s bands and a long solo career. One of the top rated guitarists ever. An easily recognized style once you learn his music. The “Just One Night” live version of Cocaine is my favorite with a longer better first solo. But there is a recent live performance of Cocaine at Royal Albert Hall in London that EVERYONE gets into. Layla was an earlier hit. Another great solo hit was Wonderful Tonight. And yes, Clapton fought a cocaine addiction for years but got through it, now having performed for nearly 60 years!

The first time I went to see Eric was in the mid-70s at Rich Stadium Buffalo, NY. With a full stadium, he came out and stumbled through 2 songs and then left the stage. Freddie King finished the concert. The second time I saw him was 1991. Derrick Trucks and someone else were touring with him, and it was a great concert. Eric lost a decade to drugs (heroin) and nearly died from that and alcohol. He has been straight for a long time now. When he did this song in 91, he sang "dirty cocaine."

I Saw Eric 7 times , 2 times at RED ROCKS CO, July 11 Thurs, 1985, then Eric played at LIVE AID PHILLY,PA July 13th Sat, then back at RED ROCKS Sun the 14th!! Cocain was 1 of the original ingredients in Coca-Cola which is how it got its name It was taken out in the early 50s. Eric Clapton also played on some Beatles songs . Along with George Harrison. . There was quite a few collaboration among the rock stars of the 60s and 70s.

That’s how we looked at it, as a groove. Biggest line of the song, ‘Don’t forget this fact, you can’t get it back…Cocaine. It was not a pro drug song. Like you said Lex, it’s a funky groove. Layla was before the white stuff. He was an extreme alcoholic and drug addict (Heroin, coke, acid, alcohol). He got clean and sober and has given back so much to the alcohol drug addition community. He built a rehab. He raised money through Crossroads concerts to help those who couldn’t afford to pay. He sold dozens of his guitars at auction for the Rehab Center and its patients. He has spoken openly and transparently about his addictions. His autobiography, ‘Clapton’. It’s like a course in rock/blues history. He knew everyone. Clapton’s 5 year old son fell out a 20+ story window in NYC. Clapton was on the way to his son’s mom’s (they weren’t together anymore ) apartment to take him to the zoo. He sees all these ambulances, firetrucks , police around the building. His ex-girlfriend had called him right before he left and said Connor, his son, was dead. His brain wouldn’t allow him to believe it. Can you imagine? He did not turn back to his demons after this tragedy. He locked himself in his house for a year and played. Out of that awful period, came the Unplugged Album, incredible. Eric Clapton has lived the blues. But he’ll tell you his son, Connor, saved his life. After his birth, he gave it all up. Not only is he one of the greatest artist of all time - he’s an inspiration.

the song Layla is about George Harrison's wife Patti Boyd. She was married to him from1966 to 1977. Eric Clapton always had a thing for her. She divorced George Harrison and married Eric Clapton. They were married from 1979 to 1989. The Eric Clapton song ''Wonderful Tonight'' is about Patti Boyd also. It's on the same album as ''Cocaine".

'After Midnight' by Eric also has a good groove. Cocaine was a high-end drug in those days. It wasn't until the 80's where it was more common and inexpensive especially when crack cocaine was unfortunately introduced.

Clapton during the cream era was what was referring to. In an interview, Eddie stated he wasn’t into Clapton after cream broke up. I guess because it wasn’t as heavy as what he did in that group.

Lex just groves with the music, which is what we did when we first heard these songs. Unless we purchased the album and the artist put the lyrics on the liner, we couldn't follow along reading the lyrics. I wish Brad would just enjoy the music like Lex. This is on of those songs that we were never sure what the lyrics were. I remember people saying "She don't like, she don't like" and "She so high, she so high".

YES.. it was an anti-drug song. As it says "she don't lie" aka when the drug says it will keep you going...it will. It also doesn't lie about its "bad" side. By being "up" you miss out on life because YOU pass it by (and there's no getting it back).

@@justaguy214 Bc of my profession, (musician), in my 52 yrs I've witnessed unfathomable amounts of cocaine abuse, & i got asdictedy too for over a decade. I sobered up. Too many friends of my past, are now dead fr. cocaine ODs. IMO, Cocaine is NOT a drug u can do in moderation! If u think u can, u just don't know you're addicted yet! Stay far away from her! Pls! 🗺️🕊️!

"Layla" was released before "Cocaine." JJ Kale wrote it, Eric covered it. 3 time RnR Hall of Famer, multiple awards/Grammys, etc. Started in the 60s. He was with Cream, Derek and the Dominoes, The Yardbirds and solo, he spans decades and his wizardry on that guitar is legendary. You have to watch Clapton live to grasp it. Very very bluesy. Guy lived a life that's seems unreal and tragic so he has lived the blues You mentioned documentary on VH (pls share, I'm interested 👍🏽), there are a few on Clapton too!! Written by close friend, singer/songwriter JJ Cale. Cale wrote many great songs, he and Clapton performed together many times. Check Lynyrd Skynyrd’s version of Cale’s, “They Call Me The Breeze.”

Clapton spent a lot of time in Tulsa with J.J. Cale and Leon Russel when I was a kid in the 70's, in fact when Clapton went solo his entire band was made of Tulsa natives. It was not unusual during that time to see them along with George Harrison at local restaurants and venues. Yeah he was one of the originals. He was in a band called The Yardbirds. When he left them, he recommended a new guy nobody ever heard of named Jimmy Page. When Jimmy Page left to join that band called Led Zepplin, he recommended Jeff Beck to replace him.

Um, no. Page didn't leave the Yardbirds to form Led Zeppelin, he was the only Yardbird left when the others left (had a tour contract to fulfill). So he formed the New Yardbirds, then changed the name after the tour. Beck was the guitarist in the Yardbirds before Page. They did play together, but with Page on bass.

Clapton and J.J. Cale released a album together in 2009? called : Road to Escindino. It's really good and won a grammy. Cale and Clapton respected each other for many years and develoved a bit of a bromance before Cales passing. Cale always kept a low profile, he didn't seek the spotlight, but he deffinety could of had it if he wanted, amazing talent! Clapton said he wished he sounded more like J.J. and was always baffled at how well his albums sounded, he just couldn't figuire how J.J. did it.

Clapton is considered to be one of the greatest electric guitarists of all-time, right up there with the likes of Jimi Hendrix. Speaking of which, I would really love if we could get some more Jimi up in here; feels like you've been neglecting the God of Electric Guitar. Clapton? Lmao. He's only regarded as such because Peter Green died young. In terms of pure influence, Jimi takes the top spot. In terms of talent and skill, neither are in the top 100. Malmsteen, EVH, Randy, Holdsworth, Vai and Satriani are a few examples of real guitar players. Enjoy your cocaine.
