JJ Cale who was Clapton's hero wrote this song and does a great version as well! Clapton was in the Yardbirds,Cream, Derek and the Dominoes,Blind Faith,played with John Mayall, Delaney &Bonnie, George Harrison and the Beatles.He has shared a stage with just about everyone who was big in rock and country music in the 60s and 70s

Hear LAYLA. There are two versions. One is slow and one is fast. I like both of them. It’s like listening to two different songs. Eric was hooked on many drugs and put his loved ones through hell. There’s a later version of COCAINE in which he sings of the evils of cocaine.

Eric Clapton was in the Yardbirds from 1963 to 1965, and John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers from 1965 to 1966. After leaving Mayall, he formed the power trio Cream with drummer Ginger Baker and bassist/vocalist Jack Bruce, in which Clapton played sustained blues improvisations and "arty, blues-based psychedelic pop". After four successful albums, Cream broke up in November 1968. Clapton then formed the blues rock band Blind Faith with Baker, Steve Winwood, and Ric Grech, recording one album and performing on one tour before they broke up. Clapton then toured with Delaney & Bonnie and recorded his first solo album in 1970, before forming Derek and the Dominos with Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle and Jim Gordon. Like Blind Faith, the band only lasted one album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, which includes "Layla", one of Clapton's signature songs.

Eric has had the CROSSROADS music festival every year or so in the Carribean to celebrate his substance abuse center. This song was written by Clapton's friend, J. J. Cale. Eric Clapton got his start in THE YARDBIRDS, then played with JOHN MAYAL and the BLUES BREAKERS. Then he played in CREAM. He played a bit part with the Beatles then went on to BONNIE AND DELANEY. Quickly thereafter he also played in Derek And the Dominos. That is 6 bands he played with in the 60s and early 70s. He went solo, for the rest of his career.

This song was written by the great JJ Cale who wrote a lot of great tunes that made other artists millions. Call me The Breeze, After Midnight, etc. Saw Cale at Tipitinas in New Orleans in the 70s. there's this story told by Pete Townshend (he played for The Who and one of the best guitar players of that time), he was hanging out with Eric Clapton (who played for Cream back then and was probably THE best guitar player in the world at that moment). they were hanging out on this bar/club in 1966 and they listened to this UnKnOwN guy playing guitar. Pete was so impressed by him he called his friend Paul McCartney (guitar/bass/singer of The Beatles). when Paul arrived he asked "what was going on?" to his friends. Pete points out to the UnKnOwN guitar player and says "we are ALL soooo fucked!!!" (other sources say it was on the lines of: "we are all outta jobs"). anyways, long story short, the UnKnOwN guitar player they were referencing to was: Jimi Hendrix. Jimi played with Cream and Clapton for one gig one night shortly after that first encounter. they had a short friendship, but Eric knew from the start Jimi was a spicial talent. Eric and Jimi were due to hang out together -but never happened- the nite Jimi died in 1970.

Clapton had a comeback of sorts in the 90’s in which he dive right into blues and did some collaborations with some of the blues greats. Tears of Heaven came into it when his little son died, and that song has eclipsed his music ever since. His blues, though is sublime.

Great song, from one of the greatest guitarists ever. Eric has struggled with substance abuse, even spent years in seclusion as part of the battle against his demons. For a long time, Clapton didn't like his vocal ability, and I suspect he also didn't like being the front man for a group. If you haven't reacted to "Layla" you should - it's quite a ride, and some of the guitar work is from Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers. There is nothing new under the sun - celebrating drug culture, and the flip side of battling your addiction, have both been parts of music for a long long time. Clapton has no problem taking controversial stances. Sometimes he's right, sometimes I very much disagree with him. Great artist either way.
