Eric Kaplan (EP on The Big Bang Theory, Co-EP on Young Sheldon, M.A. in philosophy) joins us to break down the funniest moments from The Big Bang Theory, philosophy as it relates to mental health, and practical ways to avoid being consumed by fear. He shares the differences between spirituality and religion, his experience as a monk for a brief period of time, and his concerns about selling out when he became a tv writer. Eric opens up about the passing of his older brother and how it affected his family and Eric’s own relationship with his parents, his obsession with death and dying that led him to study philosophy, and his "meditation on emptiness" practice. He explains different types of philosophy, how the concept of a higher power fits into his philosophical belief systems, and helps us answer important questions like "Why do people believe in God?" and "Does everything happen for a reason?" Eric discusses the potential benefits of psilocybin and LSD, the potential origins of climate change denialism, and what he thinks is going right in the world. Mayim and Eric consider how transgenerational trauma can inform cultural traditions, how cultural traditions can provide solutions to that trauma and grief.

How does this not have hundreds of thousands of views yet? This is by far one of the most humorous interviews while also being one of the deepest interviews I've ever listened to. I am now an Eric Kaplan fan, I'll be seeking out the Santa book.

I’m sure that one of the reasons of TBBT worlwide success was the enormous quality of the human beings and intellects working there, lots of them at this podcast. Missing Jim Parsons (who btw become 50 in two days!) Bring him here guys! Please! After Bill Prady, Simon, Kunal, Kevin, Wil, Brian, John Ross and now Eric Kaplan..I’m so sure of the quality and richness of the convos between shots with all these fabulous ones. I’d had paid a lot to be a fly perched in a wall, watching, enjoying, and learning.. as I could have stayed hours listening today’s episode. I carried with me Eric’s words “Yes. I think everything is unfolding for a reason”. Worth a lots of post podcast rumminating..

32:06 that amount of times i came back to this part… maybe i need this printed in a tshirt or something 🤷🏽‍♀️ “i seem to believe things that i cannot reconcile with each other and maybe that’s what it means to have an intellectual body… that there’s parts that bend and there are parts that don’t bend, there are parts that are vulnerable and parts that are armored, there are parts that see and parts that move and maybe that’s just the way it is. maybe that’s good.” … i mean!!!!

OMG!!! Ever since Mayim described Eric Kaplan in some interview, during Big Bang's run, I've wanted to meet him. He's like my D&D-playing, universe-speculating, spiritual-almost-religious-contemplating, paradox-navigating friends. And as a fellow member of the "Imagined what it's like to be dead and scaring myself" childhood club, a Brooklyn native, the daughter of an Erasmus Hall grad, and descendant of Galician Ashkenazim, I feel like he's my brother from another mother (and father). Anyway, as this is as close as I'll get to meeting Eric, my only complaint is that it was too short. Can't believe how fast it went. Just subscribed to his podcast, will get the book, and if he has a t-shirt would probably get that, too.... Shout-out to Jonathan for that incredibly intimate share, and to Mayim for getting Eric on the podcast (and also for her excellent interviewing skills in this one, good job waiting through the pauses and letting Eric go at his own pace). I don't make top-10 lists, but if I did, this would be in the top 3. At least. ❤❤❤❤❤

Mayim, I really enjoyed this interview with Eric Kaplan and hope to re-watch with my husband soon. Also, the tiara episode of Big Bang is one of my favorite moments of you as Amy. I actually thought that Amy's anger and disappointment with Sheldon's dismissal and belittling of her accomplishment was the last straw she could endure and I was afraid it was being used by the show to write your character off the show. Amy's "Put it on me, put it on me....Of course I do; I'm a princess!" (and your delivery) was comedy gold! Thank you. 🤣🥰😘

Even though TBBT and Young Sheldon were already my all time favourite series, only in 2019 I came to be aware of Eric Kaplan and all his work -- both as a TV writer and as a philosopher. So much poetry sprinkled everywhere! I felt irrevocably in love with Kaplan's work and pretty much combed the internet for it. I watched, read and listended to almost all I could find by or about him (I'm still saving some of his writing for the future, but that's a story too long to tell). That said, this MBB ep is the deepest and most compelling conversation I saw Kaplan engage into. Thank you so much for this amazing gift to us viewers... How could I not say: it's a tiara, it's a TIARA! 😊 Love!

when I was diagnosed with HIV in 1986, I thought about the fact that people who are very sick are frequently unable to control their emotions, including anger. So I thought I’d better work on myself between now and when I get sick so that I won’t be the kind of person that people don’t want to take care of. 💜

Eric's comment about who will benefit and who will be hurt most reminded me of Spock in "Wrath of Khan" where the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few...or the one. If each individual is of infinite value, then this is hard to reconcile and decision makers often have to make tough choices. I think parents are often caught in this dilemma and I adopted "fair does not always mean equal." Excellent edition; thank you!

There were some revelations that were personal, too, (about Eric's brother, about Jonathon's brother). Thanks for all you are doing to engage people in serious but also often comedic topics.

Mayim, I love your intellect and all of your work! Once you understand even a little glimpse of quantum phyisics, it all starts to make sense.Thank you for this video! My health was terrible, prior to the pandemic. My doctors wanted me to have major osteoarthritis surgery, to replace both of my knees, and begin visits to the cancer infusion center, for severe rheumatoid arthritis. However, because I could no longer use my hands or walk, I was also battling SEVERE ANXIETY and liver disease on top of that! I had lots of prior medical training and was all set to follow whatever was prescribed to me, but it had become clear that I wasn't going to get help at the begining of the pandemic. I learned quickly that treasuring myself and that years of emotional turmoil had taken a toll on my health. So, because of the pandemic and ALL of my doctors appointments being cancelled, I began to study how to heal myself... which also taught me to treasure others, on a deeper level and bottom line is.. after lots of meditation and learning how to self-regulate my breathing and my thoughts, my lab tests finally returned to normal. My doctors could NOT BELIEVE it and frankly neither could I, but I did it AND ALL OF MY LAB TESTS PROOVE IT! I'm so happy with my results, I now do my best to teach and help others who may be experiencing anxiety, autoimmune disease (of any kind), etc., to learn how to heal themselves. I have a KZbin Channel that not only explains my journey and how I healed myself and how someone can adapt this to their own situation, but my videos are all FREE to watch. Please share with others, if you know someone who may benefit.: kzbin.info ☮❤

I kept trying to think of a word other than “ oxymoron.” He seems comfortable to sit in the pondering S. P. A. C. E. the bittersweet/ iridescence/ Ying-yang ☯️ veil- membrane -osmosisy spots. Double Edged Swords & Dagger images & all. His Low Voice does pause enough to allow the listener to … go deeper into his thought 🧠 recesses & processes & concepts. He impresses me with how it felt like his brain could absorb ideas … like a SuPer Sponge. IMHO The Study of Religion can be fascinating… but applying yourself to the various connections to Life is TIME better spent. It can be in Nature or surrounded by Society. So far, Dogs are the Most Spiritual Beings that I have met. ( No offense to cat🙀😿😽😺😼fans - but yeah. Dogs have PURE Souls. They don’t waste time counting hairs or cleaning or tapping onto little glass screens. They just look for friends. Figure out foes. ❤ Eat / sleep/ poop. & Life cycles on!!! ( +they have a Way bigger sense of humor) Dogs just understand emotions & death & values ..and can just appreciate / accept the moments for what they are. They adjust their world view to the neurotic rules Humans & Cars & cats like to play!Lastly, Most of the cats & humans I that have gotten to know, are just too…greedy. Judgey. Ego driven. Just putting it out there. Dawgs. R. U. L. E.

First, thanks Jonathan for being so vulnerably open sharing your feelings about your bro’s coma. Ab today’s episode (in Top 3 MBB to me), how I like Eric's tone & the calm way he talks as he keeps time with the rhythmic rocking of his chair as swaying while he’s reverently watched by JC & Mayim & us..How much peace to the soul does today's episode give off! How unexpected to me has been to find this man I thought a comedy writer, speaking wisely to us as if he were in our own living rooms about such array of different philosophical questions as conciousness, soul, fear of death, existencialism, Aristotle, brain and neuroscience, mysticism, religion, freedom, determinism, in a so understandable way, very funny at times & always full of positivity! Able to let go “Biblical texts may be wrong” w/out changing his quiet tone nor face expression, to gift us afterwards with an unforgetable explanation about the infinite power vs the infinite fragility of “the Devine”. I kept to me his “I desire to be free of the demands other people put in your life” ab too organized religions.. And how much better the episode is when the guest is at the studio! A request: can you put at MBB web the link of the podcast “The Study of Religion” Eric spoke about?

Incredible conversation! I feel compelled to comment on the idea of “putting in the work” vs the demands placed on our time by society. I absolutely reject demands on my time to confirm with societal “rules” but I believe what Mayim was referring to is the fact that if you want to experience the benefits (of anything really) you have to do the work. And that is a completely separate endeavor. Could I stop drinking? Yes. Do I have to attend 90 in 90 to accomplish it? No. But am I going to stop drinking if I choose not to make the necessary changes in my life? No. That is work that is too overwhelming right now. Do I want someone to wave a magic wand for me? Hell yes! But I know it’s on me to do what I need to do. I’m not lazy; I’m surviving. And I also don’t want to make the commitment of being somewhere at a certain time. And that is on me. AND Mayim makes a great point about how if I had a ritual where I wasn’t physically alone (but could still be with myself) I might have more options or opportunities for reaching out or receiving support. It’s all so very scary and I need all my energy to make it through today.

This was a thought-provoking and thoughtful episode It seemed the topic of consciousness, and awareness and memory came up a few times. I wonder if this is a fear or concern for Mr Kaplan--dementia or some other disruption of awareness. Perhaps it's something that stood out because I recently lost my dad to Alzheimer's, and often asked the question, "who's in there" or "where is he". I also had a lot of emotional reaction to the idea that people who claim to be spiritual but not religious seem to often say that because they don't care for the work involved to participate in organized religion. I still do a lot of the work in my relationship with God, but I no longer consider myself to be religious because of the hurtful, harmful judgement from others in church. It's a brutal, competitive, derogatory environment, which inhibits my relationship with God

I have an oddly open spirituality that even put off "Universalists" who I attended a church with. Instead of staying strictly with Abrahamic doctrines, I'd point out an experience that I had with a Lightworker from Denver, or Hindu woman from Nepal, or an a Laguna woman who harmonizes esoteric practices with science. And, I found myself being brushed aside as some novelty. And as much as many of these congregants prided themselves as progressive and inclusive, there were many clutching their figurative rainbow leis when they'd see (and admonish) the Nordstrom employees or leather community having a place in Boston's Pride parade. What generally had me coming back were the sense of community, and that sermons mainly offered "food for thought". But over the past years, it became more polarized. Religious recruitment for people for demonstrations, and reverends who commanded strictly how to interpret scripture, who are the wrong people, and who are the "righteous". I just excused myself to maintain my spirituality separately. I still keep the potential open to visit the church, but it's more a respect to the validity of that preacher's perspective. Not blind agreement with their rhetoric and position on a subject.

Eric Kaplan used to tweet a lot about philosophy back in the late 2010s (before Musk), since he has a PhD on the subject. He interacted with Twitter philosophers a lot (I mean graduate students in philosophy and philosophy profs who used Twitter). I disagreed with many of his philosophical takes (as is typical among philosophers), but gotta hand it to him for writing a joke about the German analytic philosopher and logician Gottlob Frege in one of the most widely watched shows on television. I wish he also had written some jokes about Russell’s paradox or Wittgenstein’s Tractatus into the show.

It's much deeper than being lazy or not wanting to have my life and choices controlled by someone else. I'm a former Lutheran and I started questioning what I was being taught as early as first grade. There were and are too many inconsistencies in what they taught and my personal experience. In my opinion organized religion is a form of manipulation and control over the population. I don't want to feel judged by external forces. I judge myself far more harsh than anything outside of me is capable of, especially some benevolent deity. I believe in god, but not the same version of god that organized religion provides. Good talk, I identify as spiritual not religious.

Our soul is the energy that is guiding us, it's who we all truly are.. soul, energy, god. Our higher self/soul guides and directs each life we are living. Past, present, future which are all happening NOW. Time is only something we experience on earth to keep us grounded in our physical lives/bodies. If you think of a bicycle wheel, our soul/higher self is at the center. Each life is one of the spokes. And...most of us have lives not only as humans, but also multidimensionalbeings on other planets, animals , trees. Spiritual people are guided by self rather than any other humans rules. We have rituals the same as religous people just less restrictive, and guided by spirit/soul/self. Often rooted in nature or communion with nature/higher energies.❤

I feel I am spiritual but not religious. Why I feel this way is, in my life, in the churches I have attended I feel there were a lot of people that made it feel like a competition. Some people were so wrapped up in looking better then everyone else and judging others that I just didn't enjoy it. It felt very hypocritical. There were some very nice people too though, they were usually the quiet ones though. Maybe its something in my phsyche but I am more concerned with being close to God then playing the "look how good I am" game at church. Jaded? maybe. I generally am not a big people person though and I'm happy praying to God in my solitude.

Mayim totally dinged people for being spiritual and non-religious. I had a conversation with a Christian man recently with a similar accusation that without religious structure there is no work towards morality or inner work. I find that belief to be mislead. I understand she explains the comfort in structure with religious practice, but that doesn’t mean there is not similar comfort in other ways of believing.

Life is like a bubble bath. All the bubbles we make are connected to each other and to the water but for some reason we don't see the connections. One thing's for sure the bath we've made for ourselves we'll all get flushed in the end.

Thought it was common knowledge that people who say they are spiritual don't associate with a specific religion. And those who are religious do. That's the difference. Going to church on Sunday or NOT going to church on Sunday has zero do with it. Additionally, neither makes you lazy. Church is a man-made structure. You don't need a Church to find go, to be spiritual, or even religious.

'Lord' budha was definitely not a Vedantist. Schankara, who was sort of the renewer and probably the most important commentaters on the scriptures ,rebutted all the Budhist doctrines in his various commentaries as being heretical in relation to the Hindu doctrine [if you can use the word 'heresy' on the eastern doctrines.]

34:00... what a poor argument from a smart guy. Getting to things on time is EASY! Plan ahead. Leave early. If an imposed speed limit is the reason you're fired from a job, your problems are massive.

GOD and a relationship with him is divine and religion has been manipulated by man for thousands of years. The story of Jesus is an unconditional love story with forgiveness provided for us. Like God created, I can not make anyone believe in his divine power and creation. Those are a very personal decision. Christians try to force their beliefs on others without ever acting like Christ. If we act like Christ, the world will see God in is and believe. Simple

I find organized religion to be a very flawed human construct. I do have a need to believe in a higher power. Just don't know what that is. I'm a human being flailing in the eternal quagmire of the undefineable.

Organised religion is a way of controling people, same sex mariage for building the network with kids, controling them true church or rules. Letting them believe they re better than any other religion to divide ..

For me, no longer going to church is not because I don't like listening to the preaching. I really enjoy listening and learning. The effects that Christian Nationalism is having on our government and laws are absolutely repugnant to me. Knowing that they, as 501c3's, can donate up to 49% of their profits to these causes makes me not want to contribute in any way to their existence. I believe the separation of church and state is mandatory for freedom.

39:21 I really don’t want to get political, but when you start using “the bible, and being a Christian fundamentalist, you end up making god become a stupid thing. You CAN’T use god as a cash machine. The worse people honestly are those that say them can heal you if you give them money, and EVEN WORSE are those “preachers” that say that homosexuality is a sin, having sex before marriage is a sin, and all those crazy tapeworms that are using “god” to be politicians and screw up people’s rights.
