This video shows the initial runups and checkout of Eric Sacco's SisT FW-190-A8. He's spent about 6 years casually getting this bird ready, and it's beautiful.
While fully capable of flying it himself, he asked me to do the maiden just in case there were issues. Unfortunately there were...and I'm not sure I was any help in the end.
In any case...the plane flew well, and will no doubt be awesome once the kinks are worked out.

What fun. Watching seven minutes of a video with the plane just driving around like an R/C car.

You obviously have no idea about model flying. Before flying a rc model for the first time you have to check the gear.

I was a bit surprised that with more than one possible trouble shooting issue that you flew it at what seemed such a distance. I personally would have kept it a little closer. But you did very well on saving it on a very bumpy bit of ground. I fly planes myself and it a bit of panic when you come in short from the run way. It's all part of the fun of flying. Well done and thanks for sharing your video 👍

Some years ago, I took a coworker's invitation to attend an R/C plane event at an old airport. Star of the show was - guess what? - a gorgeous new Focke Wulf 190! It could have been a museum display: totally detailed cockpit, opening canopy, every flush rivet modeled with a subtle engraved ring - just jaw dropping that this was a flying model. Alas, the builder didn't fly that day for fear of a mild crosswind, but I couldn't fault him. A few weeks later, I asked the coworker if it had flown yet. "Yeah, it's totaled though." Apparently the guy had finally taken it up, only to yell that someone was on his frequency! It rolled and headed straight for the ground. Heads swiveled and saw a newbie with his transmitter, checking out his foamie on the ground, instead of having the transmitter on the rack. No frequency flag, because the FW flier had it. According to coworker, the guy booked it for his van and took off, never to be seen again.

The 2.4 GH radios have changed all of that. You can just switch on your radio and go. No worries about any body else flying the same frequency. Very nice.

Your engine is dying RIGHT after takeoff (so it's either too lean, too rich, has an air leak) and you decide to fly 1,000 feet away?? It goes without saying that, once you detected a throttle \ engine problem, you should have landed ASAP. So this little crash at the end was not the fault of the field - it was completely pilot error. (you're lucky it wasn't much worse). Learn how to read your plane \ engine in the air and respond appropriately.

After I got my wings (40+ yrs ago) it was the first tip I was given. How to bleed off speed using elevator then manage height with with throttle if engine is still running. Do they still teach that these days? Anyway. Nice airplane!

Camera perspective. It wasn't that far away. Just far enough to effect a wide enough turn to line it up on the runway.

Good looking model, great paint job. Looks empty without a pilot! :) LOL. What type of engine is fitted? Best of luck I'm sure you'll sort it out.
@TheEnigmaThatIsDrIce
@TheEnigmaThatIsDrIce 8 жыл бұрын
+Paul McFawn You're absolutely correct...It does look empty without a pilot, but he was removed for the maiden, which makes the plane a little lighter, and a little more nose heavy...both are good things. Once the plane is sorted out...the pilot will take up a permanent position in his office.

+DON RICE I never put a doll in my plane, it make it look like toy, live subjects can never be miniaturized . what a flying field, I think a 747 can land there, this plane was at least 10 mistakes high, as soon as engine problem was detected it should have headed back home, no reason to land short.
@TheEnigmaThatIsDrIce
@TheEnigmaThatIsDrIce 8 жыл бұрын
+transformer889 Well, No...the runway is only 600' long, which is marginal for some Giant scale planes...especially if they roll well...and even more so if it's a maiden, when you may need more space due to unfamiliarity with the plane. We had a number of discussions about going out of town to a slightly larger facility just to add some margin to the equation. As for heading home as soon as the engine problems were detected...we did...you may not realize we only made 2 laps...landing at the end of the 2nd.

I don't call that a crash. I call this a very wisely flown maiden flight with a save on the airplane. If it wasn't for that rock it would have been a perfect three pointer. It always brings some tension to maiden a plane, especially when it's from someone else.

Been in this hobby a very long time and I can honestly say I have never lost a plane on maiden. That is not to say I have not had my fair share of unfortunate incidents. That said, the plane looked great in the sky. A little far out for a maiden in my humble opinion. I know, I know...camera perspective. But it really was out there quite a distance. I will never chastise anyone that has a decent amount of experience in this hobby. We all learn from one another. However, I will simply interject...get rid of that piece of crap engine and get a dependable and reliable power plant up front.
