The Basic Parts of an Automatic Transmission (Part 2)

This is part two of my front wheel drive (FWD) automatic transmission dissection video. In this video I cover the operation of clutches, bands, accumulators, clutch drums, the oil pump, the valve body, valves, check balls, seals and 'o' rings, as well as the construction and function of many of the internal hard parts of an automatic transmission. To be honest a rear wheel drive transmission isn't much different as many of the basic components are the same. I guess what I'm saying is that you could use the information in this video to have a basic understanding of a rear wheel drive automatic transmission also. It is just a basic overview of the main components. I don't get into theory and operation so much. Just the general operation and identification of the parts. I may make more videos on this topic based on the comments I get so feel free to ask questions and perhaps I'll answer them in a future video on this topic. There will also be a separate video on the parts and operation of the torque converter as well. When that is posted I'll post links below to that video.

Im rebuilding my Ford c3 for my 1929 Mercedes Benz! the kit was 200 $ and we just finished (we think) it will work now it wasn't going into any gears. were going to put it in this weekend and hope for the best

I work at a transmission shop. I'll tell you it's no joke a transmission is very complex and they will have many variance of the same transmission. Get one check ball, spring, snap ring or clutch in the wrong place and you will have a world of trouble. You have to have a strong understanding of how these components work to properly repair them.

I did this after mechanical engineering. Most mechanical engineers start out doing some mechanical projects- not anywhere near mechanic leve but can fabricate stuff, but maybe 20% are into systems and haven't done anything mechanical.

Thank you for making these videos!I am a graduate student in Mechanical Engineering, my professor only shows us the stick diagram about the transmission. So, even I finished the course, passed all the exams,in the end of the semester, I don't really know how the AT really works. I am currently a technician although not an auto technician. I still deal with the parts like this including gears, solenoids, seals, bearings, retaining rings, and etc. Really a technician job is to fix a problem, we do typically understand it. Although, it is the engineers job to design it and make sure the purpose is happening. I do currently wish to become more of an engineer which would not be too difficult, although I really need to pickup more mathematics. It is amazing to see how engineers come up to put all the concepts together. But be thankful for the scientists making the discoveries, the engineers designing it, and the technicians fixing it.

+Jah Bless I think Hondas have their own proprietary design more similar to a manual transmission but could be wrong. IIRC also the 3rd gear tends to overheat on the v6 accords that have the faulty 5 speed design.

What a great tear-down and analysis. Thank you. The mind it takes to engineer the valve body alone is astounding. To integrate it into the various other components is an engineering marvel! It obviously takes a well integrated design team. Then the idea has to go to casting and machining. No wonder automatics are so expensive. I'll stick with manuals myself, those I've refurbished without to many issues.

Never know what was in a transmission - but now I can say I know a few buzz words :) Lever - Park, Drive, Reverse, 1, 2, 3, Low Valve Body - (Brains) - valves to allow pressure to various gears (directs oil pressure to different galleries) opposite pressure (Differential pressure); Pump - (Heart) Oil Pressure, Accumulators (Hydraulic cousin dampers like shock absorbers), Governor, Bands, Clutches and 2 sets of Planetary Gears (outer housing center is the sun gear, center Planetary Gear, outer Ring gear)

I had a transmission failure a few months ago on a Mitsubishi Verada (Galant or Diamante for USA market I think)... While driving suddenly it died, no drive to the wheels, no reaction when selecting different gears. Replaced it with another transmission, but thanks to this video now I'm pretty sure the oil pump failed. Shame I didn't open it to check! Thanks for this GREAT tear-down!

My mom has a 2001 Odyssey. 240k miles. Currently on its 4th transmission. #1 and #2 failed normally, just wouldn't shift. #3...the transmission seized while she was driving and exploded fluid all over the engine. Left her stuck on the side of the road in a cloud of smoke. The engine is still in perfect shape today and has never had a problem. To Honda's credit, they helped her out even though the car had 220k at the time.

I was pulled into this wonderment about automatic transmissions because my wife's inherited 2011 Buick regal with a 6t40 transmission recently failed, and within 2 months of the dealer changing the ATF fluid at 60k miles, probably for the first time. It just stopped working in D and all forward gears, reverse still worked. So frustrating and expensive, and I suspect the fluid change precipitated the failure. We are having an independent shop swap in a remanufactured transmission as I write this. Good lord those transmissions are complicated beasts!!! Sooo many points of possible failure, especially for the 6T40 which seems prone to early failure for various reasons like broken snap rings destroying delicate internals. The dealer said there were no metal particles in the old fluid, but they also said they don't flush anymore, nor do they replace the filter, which for this transmission you have to remove from the vehicle to get it open enough to access. Getting into the transmission itself to diagnose was the next step - or just replace it, which after watching this video and a couple more on the 6T40 seemed like an easy choice! Thanks again. Do you have something similar for CVT transmissions?

Mine shifts into reverse pretty hard everytime, my truck is 20 yrs old fyi, and during that time when the previous owner had it, I dunno how many times the oil's been changed. I've never changed it yet since I first got it almost 2 yrs ago now, if I remember correctly, man I better do that soon, wish me luck!

December 26, 2021 Happy Holidays! I found you today Eric and take you so much for the auto transmission tutorial. Like Hannah Hunt, I too drives a manual car (2015 Nissan Micra S). I think around 200k - 250k, need to replace the clutch disk on my Micra. About 112K mileage now and no problem(s) so far. Takes me from point A to B. Be safe Take care Be healthy to you all. If you ever want to do a Manual Transmission dissection, I have a busted one from my 91' Festiva that you can use, only thing I would ask is I do need it back because it is repairable. But if you do break it more than it already is, no foul, it has just been sitting on my garage floor for the past 7 months.

Also I was going to ask is it possible to put a reverse manual valve body on an automatic transmission while its still mounted up to the car, without having to actually drop the tranny and do it on a table? I lack the necessary equipment (transmission jack/stand and work space) to do the latter.
