2004 Odyssey Cabin Air Filter Replacement -EricTheCarGuy

This video walks you through the process of replacing the cabin air filter on a 2004 Odyssey. To be honest, you could probably use this for Odysseys dating back to 2000. It also applies to the Acura MDX, Ridgline, and Pilot of the same vintage. If you have this service done it can set you back a few bucks. If you do it yourself, you can save yourself quite a bit and you'll know that the job was done right. I hope this video helps you if you decide to go that rout. This is 2021 and my van is a 2004. 17 years old. Molding plastic was still in place. Plenty of room for jigsaw. Filter was BLACK. Imagine that. Only one screw near radio required a little patience. Thanks for the video.

Thanks Eric for the video, I did the job and it went pretty well following your advice. I would only add that you do not need to unscrew completely the bolt on the left under the plastic (6:41 to 7:17 in the video). I had problems putting back the screw after changing the air filter and when I did the job again on another car, I just lose the bolt so that the metal bar can go down and I was able to change the filter without removing that screw completely. It saves a bit of time. Have a good one!

Hi eric wanted to thank you a lot for that small detail you gave at 2:49 Few months ago i got myself this very same model and couldnt listen to the radio at all, the battery was previously removed and with that the radio couldnt be of any use without an unlocking code and didnt know what to do. So i tried what you said in the video and it surprisingly worked! Now i can hear my favorite rock songs, man! Came looking for copper and i found gold, thanks!

Wonderful video! I got the job done - never did it before and never want to do it again. The old filter was filthy and there was a ton of debris in the filter slot. Had to attach a piece of hose to my shop vac to vacuum clear back in the slot. Someone must have changed the filter at least once years agi , because the plastic part had already been chopped (hacked) out.

That filter looks like new in this part of the world (Finland) here at least where i works its in every year service and ohboy are they full of woods stuff. Makes every customers eyes pop when we show them, what they where breatheing when they drive in.

a tip for you, you can, instead of removing that last 8mm bolt on the steel bar, just loosen and swing bar downward to clear CAF

Suggestions for removing the screw on the right that secures the metal bar when it is stripped ? Tried one of those screw removal tools for the drill (grabit) with no success. Someone had replaced my air filter in the past and managed to help me out this way.

For a vehicle like my 1991 Honda Accord, whose Cabin Air Filter is a challenge to access, are there other alternatives, like maybe spraying Lysol into the fresh air vent to possibly kill some of the "funny" odor coming from the air vent?

You dont need to fully remove the steel guard. Having removed the right side screws, I just pop the guard up, pivoting off the left most hard to reach screw. I pop the guard up and over the right side plastic fuse cover/wall/carpet pieces, then pivot the guard down to where its just out of the way of the cabin filter cover. Remove filter cover, vacuum, install fresh filter, recover, tilt guard back up over the plastic wall bits till its back into position and reattach all screws. Just remove the right side and it saves a lot of frustration.

That looks like a lot of work for cabin air filter. I had to change mine on Buick Lesabre every year as it would get dirty quickly. When I let it go for over a year I found a spider web on it which was a good indication that it needs to be replaced. Easiest filter change was on Kia Sorento. I think you can do that in under 2 minutes with no tools at all.

Eric looking for help with a 2000 Saturn passlock security no start issue. Car has new battery and starter. Found out that GM has trouble with older cars with the passlock and Vat security systems. What's the best repair or bypass for this no start issue.

Great vid, suggestion you dont have to remove the glovebox stoppers. The glove box will come out with the stoppers when removing the hinges And removing the pass sill and kickpanel helps

The way Eric replaced the filter is the dealership procedure. The factory manual will tell you to cut that plastic bar. They leave it up to you as to how you want to cut it.

completely unrelated to the video but: ok, so whenever I come to a stop my rpm's on my Silverado drop really low and wants to die out...sometimes it does. what could be going on? also to narrow down any possiblities: I had driven across a road with water going across and I had to kick it to not get stuck, and then after that I had changed my starter. im pretty sure I changed my starter correctly, but could the water have possibly did anything to my sensors...or is it something else screwing up.

This video gave me an idea for an ETCG1 episode. On some cars these "simple" tasks turn out to be not so simple. For example on some Renaults you have to jack the car up and remove the front wheel to change high/low beam bulbs. It would be interesting to hear from you about this topic, Eric. What is the dealership procedure of replacing this filter on Odyssey? Remove the entire dash? Cut it up and admit the poor not user friendly engineering?

We've got an 01 Olds. Minivan. To get to the cabin air filter there is a door inside the glove box that you remove and reach in for the filters. The fact that replacing a filter takes so much work boggles my mind!!! They really should have made it simpler.

Easyest cabinfilters to change that i have found is Peugeot 206 and Ford Transit ~2010 It takes like 3 sec if you have one in your hand already. so its in service and if you have changed it (or anything else) your self, PLZ tell it to your chop when you bring it to service.

yup at 3:21..... I was replacing a cabin air filter on a chevy Aveo and didn't have to cut the plastic off, cause it was really pliable... I bet given another year or two I would have to cut the plastic off...

Water is the bane of paper filters. Putting it there means the filter most likely won't get water saturated like they can become if located in the cowl.

I did this on my pilot or the first time last year as well as this year also, you have to cut off the plastic bar in front of the screws. Not really sure why they do that

You don't need to completely remove the bolt you used the gear wrench on. Loosen a few turns and you can pivot the truss down clockwise from the right side.

Not just Honda. On the Mazda RX-8 you need to remove the whole bumper to replace foglights, remove the driver's side front wheel and splash guard to change your spark plugs and don't even get me started on changing the damn ignition coils.

go cheap to expensive. cabin air filters are service items, so eventually it will need replacement. Change it now and while changing it vacuum out where the filter goes in and if the blower motor is in view, check it for obstructions or for unusual wear.

Who the heck thought that it would be good idea to put the filter behind glove box, with my previous car all I had to do was to open the bonnet and then open plastic cover under the windscreen and there it was, no need for any tools other than my bare hands. Besides isn't it more efficient that filter is located where air is sucked in and not in the middle of the line so that dirt gets everywhere

Talk about overly complicated. On my Scion tC, you just push the sides of the glovebox in to make the tabs clear the stops so that it swings down a little lower, unclip the damper so it goes down even further, and then you have direct access to the filter, which just slides out. It's a 30-second job and you don't have to unbolt or cut anything.

I have a 2013 Honda Civic and it is simple compared to this you just pop the sides of the glove box out reach back open the air filter cover take out the old one put in the new one Snapit back and flip the glove box back up and pop into place done in five minutes - whoever designed this on the Odyssey must have been drunk LOL
