I guess I'm just an ol' skool guy, but aluminum suspension parts make me nervous. I know that corrosion resistance may be a factor, but dissimilar metals in contact in a wet saline environment I'd think would nullify that argument. So apart from a little bit of weight savings, what's the advantage of aluminum over steel control arms? Oh, and I'm ol' skool, not old. My beard is not gray. It's... uh, sun bleached. Yeah, let's go with that.
@ericthecarguy3 жыл бұрын
I don't think there's a real advantage other than if you wanted to renew the inner bushings, you would have to purchase the entire control arm from Honda. They don't sell just the rear piece I replaced. I do feel that the brace between the 2 arms helped though. Even if you didn't replace the control arms, I think there would be some benefit to the brace. Anytime you can shore up the rear suspension handling improves.
@maingun073 жыл бұрын
@@ericthecarguy Yeah, I've got the same complaint about my 96 Tacoma. The front suspension upper control arm bushings are integral with the control arm. The last time I dug into her in 2011, there wasn't an aftermarket option that I could find and the Toyota arms were around $250 each. I wound up replacing one anyhow when I got some bad dope from Haynes. The Haynes manual says 105 f/p for the ball joint. That suspension is not something that I was familiar with so I wanted to go By The Book. I wound up sucking the ball joint stud straight through the arm. Checked the actual service manual and it says 105 N/m. I usually love Haynes, but that one typo hurt me. I can't say much about the brace as I don't have any experience with Elements. You'd know better than I would. But I can't see how it would hurt. If it rolls better than it did, then I call it a Win. My winter vehicles always get more love and attention to detail than my summer ones. A failure in a blizzard on an icy road could put you in a ditch where they might not find you for a couple of days. Thanks for responding. Be safe out there. Hi Eric Can You do a video on all the little things that break on Honda Accord (I have 2004) I’d like to be aware of dangerous stuff that I can maybe replace ahead of time. I was lucky when the hood struts failed. I just went to the trunk to get washer fluid when the hood fell!! That could of been BAD!! Yesterday the gear shift button fell apart in traffic. I only had D and N. That could of been very bad. No R!!! Can’t get key out. Sometimes on amazon it says “people also bought…” and one of those was the hood struts. I can’t find anywhere all these parts are listed, gear button, struts, gas tank open cable Etc. I can find videos AFTER it breaks, but…… Like in this video you say, “these fail a lot in Honda’s” thanks!!

I really would like for All the mechanism to be more upwards, all of it sprayed with a thick protective coating, like that anti-rust you mentioned, and that everything have a steel metal cover of all the bottom of the car, to protect from everything; easy to take off and put back on, for all brands. Might be heavier but I think might be greatly beneficial for cars, and even to recycle the parts. I'm a fan of efficiency, and a dreamer, so this is my suggestion for all car manufacturers. Another thing that I think car lack is more struts instead of just rods, so the car cushion better then roads, and absorb the energy that destroys the parts: I mean as much as is mechanically sound, for ex: on those 2x wish bones, they should be don't of struts, several of them, also the Aluminum parts in this car; imagine how much energy this could absorb, with all kinds of shock absorbents and a computer reading the terrain for optimal preparation of these cusshioners, would be awesome, less work and more simplicity I think, making these programmable shock absorbers: modular, robust and durable, maybe from a Steel+Titanium Alloys

@@ericthecarguy Well if I'm not mistaken KYB is a Japanese company which is why i bought them, don't want anything made in Germany (over engineered) and/or China (low quality). There were 2 reasons why i replaced the shocks, 1 front springs were broken (yup, while i'm in there), 2 rear shocks were corroded heavily. They all worked good, hence when i changed them i could not tell the difference from OEM and KYB, that civic 03 has a stiff suspension (not much suspension travel) after changing the shocks it was as stiff as ever, very annoying, i'm used to drive a 1st gen CR-V that does not care about bumps, put holes, lack or pavement. Love the Element rebuild series, I don't think I'd ever put that much labor in mine but good to see someone else do it.

The element looks goofy, gets terrible gas milage and is slower than stink but I still love mine and I'll keep it on the road until they stop making parts for it.

Scotty said that aluminum socket was so you wouldn't mar shiny new aluminum part during installation. Shame it didn't make it that far.

Why is it on other elements I see that Ericthecarguy has the curve part of the lower control arm facing up and other elements I see it's facing down

26:47 Eric, I paused to read alignment and notice that the After numbers are not symmetrical. E.g., front right camber and caster are different from left front camber and caster. Explanation?

Front camber adjustment bolts are on the way. I won't be making a video about it though. They didn't arrive in time to include in this video. Thanks for the comment.

I just installed this same kit. But the bow in the arms are facing down per their left and right. Does it really matter?

Installing a part that says "Lift" instead of "Left" didn't tell ya to go back with the honda part? LOL
