Really happy to see you fixing up an Element. I’ve always liked these cars, as they’re well engineered and designed for an active lifestyle. I also liked the sunroof being in the back. It makes the cabin feel even airier. Great video, as always 👍

Yup, not supporting the knuckle after removing the strut is exactly what I did. Managed to damage driveshaft oil seal on the gearbox and to lose some of the fluid. That added some money and frustration that wasn't needed, but you live and learn

I guess I'm just an ol' skool guy, but aluminum suspension parts make me nervous. I know that corrosion resistance may be a factor, but dissimilar metals in contact in a wet saline environment I'd think would nullify that argument. So apart from a little bit of weight savings, what's the advantage of aluminum over steel control arms? Oh, and I'm ol' skool, not old. My beard is not gray. It's... uh, sun bleached. Yeah, let's go with that.
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think there's a real advantage other than if you wanted to renew the inner bushings, you would have to purchase the entire control arm from Honda. They don't sell just the rear piece I replaced. I do feel that the brace between the 2 arms helped though. Even if you didn't replace the control arms, I think there would be some benefit to the brace. Anytime you can shore up the rear suspension handling improves.
@maingun07
@maingun07 3 жыл бұрын
@@ericthecarguy Yeah, I've got the same complaint about my 96 Tacoma. The front suspension upper control arm bushings are integral with the control arm. The last time I dug into her in 2011, there wasn't an aftermarket option that I could find and the Toyota arms were around $250 each. I wound up replacing one anyhow when I got some bad dope from Haynes. The Haynes manual says 105 f/p for the ball joint. That suspension is not something that I was familiar with so I wanted to go By The Book. I wound up sucking the ball joint stud straight through the arm. Checked the actual service manual and it says 105 N/m. I usually love Haynes, but that one typo hurt me. I can't say much about the brace as I don't have any experience with Elements. You'd know better than I would. But I can't see how it would hurt. If it rolls better than it did, then I call it a Win. My winter vehicles always get more love and attention to detail than my summer ones. A failure in a blizzard on an icy road could put you in a ditch where they might not find you for a couple of days. Thanks for responding. Be safe out there. Seriously, I've driven in your neck of the woods. Those people are morons.

Hi Eric Can You do a video on all the little things that break on Honda Accord (I have 2004) I’d like to be aware of dangerous stuff that I can maybe replace ahead of time. I was lucky when the hood struts failed. I just went to the trunk to get washer fluid when the hood fell!! That could of been BAD!! Yesterday the gear shift button fell apart in traffic. I only had D and N. That could of been very bad. No R!!! Can’t get key out. Sometimes on amazon it says “people also bought…” and one of those was the hood struts. I can’t find anywhere all these parts are listed, gear button, struts, gas tank open cable Etc. I can find videos AFTER it breaks, but…… Like in this video you say, “these fail a lot in Honda’s” thanks!!

On phone “hey you got your sticker”. Being alone you get this kinda stuff. That’s why I learned to fix things myself. I guess I’ll make a list and try to find a venue to ask for others to contribute info. I’ll send it to you if it gets going. I get your, “I don’t have a lot of extra time” video. I know that feeling. The 2 killers of coil springs, in order of occurrence: The vinyl coating get's damaged, ablates (peels off). Oxygen attacks the tempered steel. The top bearing fails, causing the spring to "wind" on turns. Vehicle suspension springs are meant for compression/expansion only, not twisting.

I replaced lower ball joints on an acura TL I had a few years ago. I used anti seize and a torque wrench to secure. The nut ended up coming loose and the ball joint popped out and my car came to a stop in an intersection. A buddy said just put those together dry, plus we live in AZ so no salt or corrosion. Your thoughts? If I had to do over again I think I would look for ball joints with a cotter pin.

I really would like for All the mechanism to be more upwards, all of it sprayed with a thick protective coating, like that anti-rust you mentioned, and that everything have a steel metal cover of all the bottom of the car, to protect from everything; easy to take off and put back on, for all brands. Might be heavier but I think might be greatly beneficial for cars, and even to recycle the parts. I'm a fan of efficiency, and a dreamer, so this is my suggestion for all car manufacturers. Another thing that I think car lack is more struts instead of just rods, so the car cushion better then roads, and absorb the energy that destroys the parts: I mean as much as is mechanically sound, for ex: on those 2x wish bones, they should be don't of struts, several of them, also the Aluminum parts in this car; imagine how much energy this could absorb, with all kinds of shock absorbents and a computer reading the terrain for optimal preparation of these cusshioners, would be awesome, less work and more simplicity I think, making these programmable shock absorbers: modular, robust and durable, maybe from a Steel+Titanium Alloys

@@ericthecarguy Well if I'm not mistaken KYB is a Japanese company which is why i bought them, don't want anything made in Germany (over engineered) and/or China (low quality). There were 2 reasons why i replaced the shocks, 1 front springs were broken (yup, while i'm in there), 2 rear shocks were corroded heavily. They all worked good, hence when i changed them i could not tell the difference from OEM and KYB, that civic 03 has a stiff suspension (not much suspension travel) after changing the shocks it was as stiff as ever, very annoying, i'm used to drive a 1st gen CR-V that does not care about bumps, put holes, lack or pavement. Civic is stiff good for stability, bad on the back and poor for going over obstacles, Cr-v rolls like it's about to tip over but very easy on my back, and good for fun where there are no roads :)

Why would ANYONE make a large fastener socket - or ANY socket - out of aluminum-???!!! Has to be one of the worst ideas ive ever heard of, makes me wonder about the quality in their aluminum suspension parts, just sayin----

Question- I have a 2004, 122k miles. The front strut bolts on top, the rubber is cracking around the bolt. It has not separated but I’m wondering how urgent it is to replace struts when that rubber is cracked. Also one of the bolts (passenger side) is different than the driver side. Passenger side does not have an Allen head on top like the drivers does. Which makes me think that passenger side has already been replaced once with an aftermarket. Replace? Or good to keep going? Would aftermarket struts be okay to get? Like 1A Auto or ones from Rockauto? Love your videos as I just bought this Honda and am looking to do as much work myself.

I just installed the lower control arms on my wife’s CRV and they also had #6000 on both of them. I thought it was a serial number but maybe it’s a patent number. My left one actually says LEFT and not LIFT, I had to go check after seeing yours 😂

Why do the 2003-05 Honda CR-Vs sag in the rear during acceleration? Can this be remedied with stiffer rear shocks or an upgrade of some sort? Do the elements have the same problem?
