I'm 54 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30 years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for.

Because of dividends, I first began investing in stocks. It's important, in my opinion, to be able to live off of dividends without selling if you invest and make other income in addition to payouts. It suggests that you may pass that down to your kids and give them a leg up in life. Over the years, I've invested over $800k in dividend stocks; I continue to buy more today and will keep doing so until the price drops even further.

Hearing from an experienced investor who has survived adversity and prevailed is always motivating. It may be frightening when your portfolio goes from green to red, but if you have invested in strong firms, you should maintain growing them and stick to your goal.

I wholeheartedly concur, which is why I appreciate giving an investment coach the power of decision-making. Given their specialized expertise and education, as well as the fact that each and every one of their skills is centered on harnessing risk for its asymmetrical potential and controlling it as a buffer against certain unfavorable developments, it is practically impossible for them to underperform. I have made over 1.5 million dollars working with an investment coach for more than two years.

Well done lesson, thanks a lot. Would like to highlight a side aspect: the importance of checking the side effects of this strategy related to taxes. Dividends are capital income and the taxes are due when the dividends come. On the other hand, taxes for rising share values and resulting gains are only due when you sell. So also the decision about when to pay taxes (resp. about your progression etc.) is in your hand.

Yes, however with a Roth, you can withdraw your contributions at anytime tax-free, but you cannot withdraw your earnings penalty free, until you have reached the age of 59 and a half. For the average investor who has 20 to 30 years of investing time frame, dividend investing not worth it. Historically, s&p 500 has outperformed any dividend stock or etf. It's better to invest in a s&p index fund which will grow alot more than any dividend fund or etf. Plus it's not like the dividends will be used anytime soon so why not go for larger growth which the data clearly shows? Boglehead portfolios outperform dividend portfolios and dividend distribution has an inverse effect on the stock price.

I agree! The average investor is better served by listening to the Motley Fool, buy S&P 500 fund shares, keep investing, get out of the way, let time work for you. Investing in a low overhead S&P 500 fund is just about the best "passive" way to invest there is. Realize S&P 500 funds get dividends from the stocks in them too! If you want "income" to live on, then dividend investing makes some sense, but dividend funds are not the best way to invest if you have a long horizon until retirement.

The main thing is that whether you want to keep up with joneses or not. If you're happy with a simple lifestyle, then you really dont need much dividends or cash to survive and or enjoy the things you like. If you're someone who needs the latest everything, cars, clothes, jewelry, accessories, vacations (monthly or quarterly), then maybe the money you get would never be enough.

I retired with a pension from the military at age 38 and started a second career as a teacher, and I live modestly. When I retire from teaching I will have my military pension, teaching pension, 401K, Roth IRA, a small Social Security benefit, and no debt - but I am still concerned about having enough money to live on. I don't understand how so many people take rock star vacations every year, buy expensive houses and cars in their 30s and 40s, refuse to save or invest for retirement - but they still act like they don't have a care in the world.

I HIGHLY recommend not to go chasing the idea of thinking you can live off dividends within the next 40 years of your life...unless you have like 1.5 million invested in stocks. By that time your kids will be the only ones enjoying your dividend payouts. The higher the dividend rate, the poorer the stock performs usually. Focus on blue chips, index funds, or covered calls if you have the capital (which is still about 1/30th of what you need to have Dividends support you). If you get paid dividends as a result, thats a bonus. Hurray $40 in Dividends out of the $10,000 you gained from not chasing dividends. Just stop going to Starbucks 13 times a week. Go 12 times a week instead, and youll still be saving more money than dividends.

The downside to dividend investing is that the returns are lower than your typical S&P fund. Over the last 17 years... VYM earned 5.33% per year and recently returned a 2.80% yield for a total return of 8.13% SPY earned 8.18% per year and recently returned a 1.21% yield for a total return of 9.39% QQQ earned 14.31% per year and recently returned a 0.61% yield for a total return of 14.92% Nothing wrong with having some VYM in your portfolio, but I wouldn't necessarily put my whole portfolio into a dividend-focused ETF. Riskier is better in the earlier years, this strategy is better for a 60-yr old.

Finally someone who puts a number to that goal of retiring early. So different from the touts "everyone can achieve this -- I know a personal finance manager that you should contact". If you have a well paying job, you can reach one million of savings until you retire. If you have a really well paying job, you can reach it earlier. If you need almost all your earnings just to live, that goal is far off. Of course, you can accelerate your journey by investing the little (or many) money you have. Over the last decades not much could go wrong. But even then: it makes reaching the goal even easier for people that are well off and still not helping people who just don't have the money to set aside and save.

Only investing in dividend stocks misses a lot of great companies. You can typically drawdown a portfolio at 3-4% per year safely, some from dividends some from capital gains. There are also tax implications if considering only dividend stocks. You may be in 20% dividend tax bracket now and 0-15% capital gains later.

I had no idea that the dividend is not related to share prices...I'm such an illiterate person when it comes to investing. Thank you! I subscribed :)

what are your thoughts on socially conscious investing? I'd rather not have any of my money be in tobacco or asset-backed securities for example.

You might get a worse return. Also you aren't likely having a meaningful impact. Altria's market cap is $90 billion, their stock isn't really going to be affected if you don't invest in them. In the end a company's value depends on its earnings. You're probably doing all you can by not smoking, I wouldn't stress out about it.

I have stocks and some pay dividends but I never put this much thought into it. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I’ll be thinking a lot more about buying dividend stocks than before after watching your video.
