TRADEMARK TIP I WANTED TO SHARE FROM MY LAWYER TEACHER: I just wanted to share this for those who are starting out and want to direct their budget on something they find more important, because registering a trademark can be quite pricey! I had an instructor who was a lawyer for intellectual property (legal stuff so you don't get sued for your work) and she teaches a class on that exact subject in the college I went to. She mentioned that you DO NOT have to pay to trademark your logo, because once you create it, it's your work. So, in order to protect yourself from someone else taking your logo, you can simply add the TM symbol next to it and you're good to go! Now, if you want to make it registered trademark THEN you can go ahead and pay that fee, and the symbol would then be changed to the R symbol.

Yalethia Lee That’s a fair comment, I just wanted to share that as a possibility for the people who might want to put more focus on getting started. At the end of the day, you work is your work, and someone steals that from you registered or not, you can always take it to court with the proof that you were the one that created it first. Again, this is information coming from a licensed professional, but I see where you’re coming from. Kind of like what happened with the man who created automated windshield wipers. Ford claimed they invented it first, but in reality he invented it and eventually won the lawsuit. For some people getting their business started and fully functioning is more important than paying to register a logo, but I 100% agree with you in the sense that it’s recommended to make the investment early to prevent possible theft of artwork. Thanks for your input!

Have you guys noticed that : eating out is very difficult and expensive. in an area, typically, you might find an outlet selling pizza, you might sometimes find a restaurant in which meals are quite expensive, and that's it. Here you barely have : very few foods, and they are expensive You can eat almost nothing, Do you guys see ? This model is very inefficient Eating out is nearly impossible Something is definitely missing it is : a restaurant where food keeps changing, food changes every day Chefs also rotate A meal is going to be cheap You get new foods every day. k0p I don’t think this comment is really called for. There is so much information out there that sometimes it is possible to feel overwhelmed. Everyone prioritizes these steps differently and many entrepreneurs also follow so many different variations of these steps. What benefit is there in giving such a negative comment when you don’t even know the person or what they’ve done or are dealing with? Maybe try encouragement or, better yet, if you don’t have anything nice to say, silence is just as useful.

What she didn’t say was that these things cost lots of money upfront. So be sure to count the cost and save up the capital before getting up excited. Trademarks cost around $3,000. Registering with the state costs around $225. A good social media advertising budget is around $500 (especially on Instagram or Facebook). A general advertising budget outside of social media can cost around $3,000-$8,000 minimum. Don’t let her sell you dreams. It’s attainable but do research. Also, what she didn’t mention was the importance of a business P.O. Box if you are working from a home office. Also, the necessity of a home office when you are in the first 5-10 years. Great advice … but lots of holes left for you to fall through in the delivery.

Great tips, love your videos, delivery style, and enthusiasm! Just wanted to offer one helpful note, after you mentioned the costs associated with clothing for your channel. I’m not a tax professional (for the record:)). But for anyone who does their own bookkeeping and or taxes, I would just be extremely cautious about writing off any deductions for “clothing,” (specifically), as it can be a red flag/ trigging an IRS audit. From what I understand/ (have been personally advised), even though clothing passes the “ordinary and necessary” rule when deciding wether or not the expense is a reasonable deduction for schedule C.... Well, you know the IRS, and in this case, they’ve gone out of their way to further define or rather, constrain us, in making it rarely deductible. Unless it’s part of a uniform, or something that one would where “nowhere else but work.” Entertainers can deduct the cost of “theatrical costumes and accessories” as long as “they’re not suitable for everyday wear” It’s deductible if it’s: protective wear (like a hard hat or work gloves, special performance footwear), something you are required to wear as a condition of your employment/ or profession such as a uniform or scrubs, promotional wear (like a shirt with your logo printed on it), a “costume” which strictly means- it passes the test of whether or not you’d be able to wear it in public/ outside of the business. To boil it down: if one can potentially wear the clothing on the street, then it’s nondeductible. Even if you invested in clothing that you had planned to wear specifically and exclusively for filming, or you buy a suit intended for wearing once at a speaking event, the IRS considers the costs “nondeductible,” because “it could be worn on the street/ outside of a workplace.” I’m not giving legal advice, as I’m just a small business owner, and of course everyone should do their own research/ homework for their situation, or read the IRS publications/ consult a tax attorney, CPA or trusted professional. I would highly recommend visiting the small business-self employed section of the IRS. gov website, as they have an online learning tool for small businesses there, not all that exciting, but still a free resource for those searching for tax info or help understanding what is and is not deductible :)

I spent a week watching these videos, writing everything down and creating the jewelry I plan on making. Even in school I wasn't that productive :')

Thank you for all this helpful information. I think I’m finally ready to make my business legal. I’ve been so nervous to register but I’m so excited to take this step 😬 Are you using your canon g7x to film this?

Thank you so much! A lot of the videos I came across DONT tell you these details and tend to focus on the fluff of it all. I really appreciate this and trust I had my notebook and pen.

Thanks for laying this out so simply and clearly. So many of these tip videos give a bunch of info that doesn’t pertain to every business.
