I've had my eye on the ESEE JG5 since it was first announced. However, I have several other knives that already fill what I would use it for so I was reluctant to buy. Then, SMKW knocked $25 off the price and I couldn't resist. This is my first look. It won't be my last.

1095 carbon steel is classic, and very serviceable. Its main drawback is that it rusts pretty easily. I wouldn’t use it for a dive knife, or something on a saltwater pier. But if you’re willing to take a few precautions, like drying it when it gets wet, and applying a thin coat of oil periodically, a 1095 steel knife will last much longer than you will. I know, because I have some that belonged to my grandparents.

A great knife shape for a camp kitchen . Chopping up onions and meat etc for the chili or stew pot.

I thought it was fantastic when ESEE came out with this take on the Nessmuk. Great looking knife, and it would be very practical for the sorts of things I do outdoors. The only reason I don't have one yet is there were too many knives on my list in front of it. lol I still plan to get one someday. Thanks for showing it off, my friend!

Good choice you will get a lot of use out of it. I could see it being especially useful in food prep at the camp site. Thanks Tobias

Great review, I too have been eyeing this knife. I like it because it is made of 1095 carbon so much easier to sharpen.

You promised a review and you delivered a review Thanks now I want one Or do I still want a Grohmann lol I don’t consider it a rant at all bc many of your viewers are probably newbies and just into Chinese folders and know little about bushcraft or 1095 steel You spell things out without getting into the weeds of technicality Thanks again

Tons of useful hands-on info. I hadn't even considered the black oxide issues regarding food prep, thanks Tobias! L.T. Wright knives have a 90° spine as well. I used a Spyderco or Lansky ceramic rod to knock down the thumb shredding corners on mine. It works slowly and I am able to break the corner just enough to be comfortable without being visible.

Every once in a while KZbin informs me of one of your videos days after you post it. This is one such example. Great video and a great interpretation of a classic pattern. The only Nessmuk pattern I have at the moment is the Ontario Fish and Game knife that is made from an Old Hickory butcher knife. Looking forward to seeing your Sunday sermon, and wishing you a good night.

Why buy a Nessmuk when you already have alternatives? Well first because it is a great looking knife. 1095 is an awesome steel all around, yes it will rust if you don't maintain the steel, so oil it and it'll be fine. I wouldn't be to worried about foodsafe on the finish, i don't think it would do much harm. Did i already mentioned it looks great? Oh well i really like the nessmuk shape. Skinning, slicing, cutting wood, chop food, make a fire. The corners on the handle are a bit sharp, so yes i see why you want to reshape that. All around a pretty nice knife, thank you for showing Tobias.

Normally when I wait a while to buy a knife, I end up somewhat disappointed. There was something about the knife that was sending me negative vibes. This is one of the few exceptions. I'm not at all disappointed with this one. My only regret is if I had bought it last spring, I could've been using it last summer!

To scrape a ferro rod, you only need an area of knife spine a little wider that the rod. It doesn’t matter what shape the rest of the spine has. For that matter, you can get sparks with the sharp edge of a knife, although you have to be more careful not to break the rod.
@KnifeChatswithTobias

I think the idea of the 90 degree spine is to create an almost idiot proof spark maker. Many of the things ESEE does if done with an eye roll and a giggle as a response to repeated suggestion from fans who they know more than the experts.

My favorite belt knife and I have plenty. Beware of cheap knockoffs! Eseeknife is not Esee knives! Notice the spelling. They use the same Esee label but it's from China and about 75 bucks. 90 degree spines also serve as a good way to make scrapings for tinder. I put a little Olive oil on the blade and process deer as well as slicing fruits and veggies.

We don't have bears around me. Well with the exception of an NFL team, but they have proven to be quite harmless. But there are coyotes, foxes, and raccoons that are almost as big as bears. This one is going to get some use.
