A shout out too to the iPG800 iPad controller. It has a PG-300 mode which can control the Alpha 1/2. Espen's sounds and the $10 iPad app are a good investment IMO. I use a Yamaha MD-BT01 Bluetooth MIDI adapter to connect this to the iPad.
@cansisco7 ай бұрын
what does this app help accomplish?
@peterkadarmusic97286 ай бұрын
@@cansisco real time control of the parameters. It basically replaces the hard to find PG-300 which was an add on controller for the Alpha Juno series. It puts the parameters which are normally hidden in menus on a touch screen. Very nice for real time control. You can configure midi controllers like the Novation SL Zero, etc. to work in a similar way.

I bought a Juno 1 back in the late 80s even though the guy in the store demonstrated a Juno 2 and recommended it. I was a guitarist and synths were a total mystery to me then and I was budget conscious after moving into my first apartment. It still has a smart look, to me it was like 2001 A Space Odyssey, just press a membrane button and you have the your sounds you need for cover tunes. A few years later I traded it for a Mackie mixer that I got way more use out of and still have. I have a midi controller and a plethora of free vsts that I use in Cakewalk(free DAW) including Phutura which is a Juno clone vst.

Very nice patches, Espen! I've been looking at some Alpha Juno videos tonight and stumbled upon your fine sounds! And getting nostalgic at the same time, wishing I would still have it...so a repost of a comment I wrote to another video: Alpha Juno 2 (we only called it Juno 2) was my first real synth back in 87 which I'd as a real synth instead of the Yamaha PSR-6100... a play-at-home device a store keeper managed to sell me a year earlier claiming it was the best on the market, ha ha. Well although I only played more or less with factory sounds (I did not understand programming and I didn't know anyone who knew how) I remember thinking it was not good enough, although I liked the sound of the Juno 2. Everyone talked about the DX7 and the Roland D50 which had just been released. Digital was the sound everyone wanted, including me. A year later I bought the JX-8P which at the moment felt a little like the wrong move and the next year I finally had the D50, by flipping my Juno 2. If someone had told 15 yo me, that you could do almost anything and any sounds with these devices, if you just start digging into them properly. :-)

Particularly like the slow sweeping pad at about 11:20. Great programming Espen.
@EspenKraft5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alex! One of the best tricks the Alpha has is the very, very slow LFO capabilities. I use this almost exclusivly for my wind, noise and other types of sweeps in my music. With careful programming I find the Alpha can sound identical (but it can do much more in addition) to the 6/60/106 and that's why I sold all of them years ago. The Alpha is criminally underrated, but all for the better as they are much cheaper to buy ;-)
@AlexBallMusic5 жыл бұрын
@@EspenKraft That's interesting. Yet to play an Alpha but imagine the "under the hood" controls put people off because that's part of the analogue experience for many. Does sound great. Juno-6/60 is my favourite 6-voice poly Roland did I think. Same vca/vcf and envelopes as the Jupiter-8 and has a more fuzzy sound. The 106 is a bit bright and clean for my taste and the JX-3P and Jupiter-6 have a different metallic thing going on that I like in a different way, but my heart is with the 6/60. Prophet~5 rev2 is the best sounding poly I've ever played though. Good Lordy.
@EspenKraft5 жыл бұрын
I can get your love for the Prophet 5, although I have no idea if those I played through the years were rev2. I haven't played one for a long time now, but they do sound good. The membrane menu driven Alpha is of course why it's not up there with the 6/60/106 as the analog synth community has always been pro tactile controls, and nothing wrong with that, but I always judge a synth from its sounds more than the visual and tactile angle. Probably because I no longer tour or play live or have any need for turning that filter in real time ;-)

I've just bough a Roland Alpha Juno 2. Was a bit tatty at first but after cleaning it up and giving it a good service this is now probably the best synth i've ever owned. I've seen most of your videos including the one where you talk about the JU2 and how it's one of your favourites too... but if I am honest I was a little bit disappointed with the factory presets. Anyway... these patches have completely transformed my Alpha Juno 2!! As soon as I transferred the SYSex and heard the first preset I fell in love, and as I went though the 8x banks every single one of these patches sounds fantastic! Thank you Espen Kraft.

Great sounds, Espen. I never owned an Alpha, it was out of my price range, but I remember playing with them at my local music store when they came out. I fell in love with that buzzy quality of the Roland sound. Just listening to your patches and seeing the sleek, modern interface of the Alpha brings back a lot of good memories. I'm thrilled to see new sounds for these old instruments. Hope you sell a lot of them.
@EspenKraft5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul! Yeah, if you have the Alpha you can get rid of the Juno 6,60 and 106 as the Alpha can do all that. And more. These sounds will sell constantly over the course of history... they don't cost uch either ;-)
@EspenKraft2 жыл бұрын
@ghost mall I believe firmly that I can use the Alpha to absolutely everything the Juno 6/60/106 in terms of sound. The tactile experience is different of course and I do keep the 106 for different reasons.
@EspenKraft2 жыл бұрын
@ghost mall I'll give you that. The filter does not self-oscillate. However, like you point out, this is a feature very rarely used, at least among "pop" user like myself. In a video tutorial I might go through it as that exact thing is fun to play with, again in a tutorial video, not so much in "real life" . ;-)
@EspenKraft2 жыл бұрын
@ghost mall That's how it is. Some are reluctant to say things, while others are not. We're all different. I have polarized opinion since the day I was born. I've owned my Alpha Juno 2 for a couple weeks. I really like it's raw analog sound and the chorus effect is really good. But even though this synth is from 1986, most the patches I find online sound more like they're for 1990's techno music. I've had trouble finding decent 80's sounds for it. I mean, it's guts are almost the same as the Juno-106, it should be able to do almost everything that synth can do. I'm thinking I'll buy your patches and see how I like them. :P

This patches works with alpha juno 1?
@EspenKraft Жыл бұрын
There is no difference between the Alphas when it comes to patches. So yes.

Will you be including some midi of your sexy keyboard playing?
@EspenKraft5 жыл бұрын
Afraid not, I don't even record MIDI data usually. In my songs about 90 percent of all you hear is recorded by hand straight in as audio.

So a newb question here but will these patches work though Ableton, i have an Ultranova but i guess i wouldn't be able to store them in the Ultranova. Great sounding patches even if i can't use them.
@EspenKraft5 жыл бұрын
No stupid questions, just stupid answers. Anyways, forget Ableton or Ultranova, these patches can only be used if you have a hardware Alpha Juno or the module MKS-50. Old school you know. ;-)

what reverb did you use?
@EspenKraft5 жыл бұрын
Just a hall reverb from Valhalla in this demo.

Can someone tell me what the difference in sound is between analogue and not analogue synthesizers?
@davetbassbos5 жыл бұрын
Warm vs Bright, lol. but that's the usual way of explaining it, both had periods when they dominated pop music

If I bought these could you just send me the parameters? I’d rather just program them in myself as a learning experience. I also have the Pg-300 it would be easy to do.
@EspenKraft Жыл бұрын
No, I don't have that. You'd have to study the parameters afterwards. I don't have them written down.
