He should start facing the side wall/fence, and only turn into the court at the last moment. I teach this by sometimes holding the student's hips (getting out of the way of the racquet!). The student then understands that there are 90 degrees of freedom in the swing path (between flat and kick).

I will say this; if you truly want to learn a great kick serve, you have to take apart the whole process and practice each motion separately!!!
@yuk2k7 жыл бұрын
Wow. It's remarkable how well he was hitting that kick after such a short amount of time. I know the video is edited, but this was probably 2 - 3 hours max, and you could tell in the beginning how hard-wired his muscle memory was to hit through the ball. A testament to good coaching. Keep up the great work and content, ET team.

Everything in this particular video took place within a 45 minute window. Thanks for watching, appreciate your support!
@manpreetsinghbhatia5 жыл бұрын
Why don't I see his swing as you mentioned. I feel like it is simply spining the ball by cutting it. There could be no chance that could be a kick serve.
@Armando_Lara5 жыл бұрын
@@manpreetsinghbhatia I think the purpose of this session was to make the student feel the core of a kick serve. Most likely later he'll be shown how to implement more pronation and even a little bit more of "flat/power" component without loosing the kick.
@leonardallen55225 жыл бұрын
Good video. When the student is practicing full motion, majority of the serves were slice and not kick. His shoulders were turned into the court at contact and he was pronating through the ball with drive rather than racket path along baseline. Shouldn't his position be more sideways, remaining sideways until after contact then turning into the court with follow through? I'm still working on this and this gives me some techniques to try. Thanks!
@crazysrbin887 жыл бұрын
I'm not a teacher, but shouldn't he be more in line with the baseline, he is almost at 90°?

Definitely a difficult concept to master. Well explained! Key is always practice reps once the instruction is understood in a lesson environment. I found taking a week or two off from playing matches to work on kick serve before integrating back to points-scoring was key.
@EssentialTennis7 жыл бұрын
You're incredibly right - without good quality practice reps this swing direction is extremely difficult for most players to learn! It's a very foreign feeling for the majority of players since not many are vertically aligned on their service motions to begin with.....and hitting topspin on a serve takes that to an extreme. -Ian

Ian’s comment about closing the student’s racquet face to correct long serves was the answer I was looking for. I was doing everything right except my racquet face was too CLOSED, so my kick serves were too short! They were dropping in the middle of the service box. I’ll be trying this tomorrow!

At the beginning, you must teach the keeping side way of the body. Unless you keep the side way of your body, you will never be able to get a decent swing for Spin serve. This trainee in the video also don't understand it. And I stopped watching this video.

Amazing video. Thanks for sharing, and congratulations to you Ian for your coaching. You are a real educator: kind but assertive, with enough self-esteem and a good dose of patience to wait for the right moment and make modifications in your player. The step by step with which you managed to induce a skeptical one like Siby to change his movement of serve (something very delicate, i.e: Coria tried to change some aspects of his serve and his declining began from there) is for any tennis teacher to take it as a reference. Excellent work! Cheers from Argentina!

Thank you so much !! Finally i got a better second serve, i still have to practice the placement, becouse in the deuce side it always go to the left corner and in the ad court it goes rigth to the "T" , its hard to me to accelerate upward and control the angle of mi palm.When i play with my rigth hand i struggle very hard with the kick serve, becouse in my mind i have to toss behind me and arc my back in akward position, it take me like 3 or 4 months of tryng to sincronice the toss, the arc and the impact, a really nigthmare...But with this video i learn in almost 3 days with my left hand adjust the swing to create the spin and curve the ball!!! Yesterday i only make 2 doble foults in two sets!!! Iam very happy and thankfull for your lessons!!Greatings form Bolivia!!!

Sibby was not hitting kick serves but a topspin serve with slight slice as the ball moved to the left slightly after bounce. A kick serve has the ball moved to the right after bounce for a right-hander. So the title of this video is a bit misleading being a "KICK SERVE Tennis Lesson".
@_MichaelJordan6 жыл бұрын
^^ THIS. He was hitting a mix of slice/kick. I would call it a slice serve more than kick though because when serving on the ad side you can see the ball moving left into the court instead of to the right jumping out of the court.

Props to him for picking up on it very quickly... I'll definitely have to show this video to my dad... What people don't understand is if you can get a strong kick this Is a very reliable serve that can get you aces. I routinely use this on the add side (righty) and produce around 3 feet of kick againt the trajectory of the ball. Even though its a bit telegraphed its impossible for your opponent to know how hard it will actually kick, and tends to start you on the offensive. Nadal was winning titles when all he had was an 80 mph kick serve

It looks like Siby was still moving the racket forward a little bit instead of left-to-right and spinning upward. His looks a little like a slice serve instead. My son is struggling with this the same way. The pronation in the kick serve is kinda hard and not natural so it requires a lot of shadow swings like Ian showed, using the racket to roll the ball up in your palm. Thanks for the video.

What I miss in every video about kick serves is, that there are 2 totally different approaches of doing a proper kick serve. The one, you mention, is about to pronate after making contact as shown in the video. The second approach, other coaches teach in their videos, is to not pronate after making contact and get the elbow up. The second approach, you just mention it in one or two sentences forces you to bend your back a lot more, which is true. Besides that, good video. I am still going with the second type of kick serve, but will give the pronation-type-of-kick-serve a try.

Once more you demonstrate why ET is the best online tennis instruction out there. I have a decent first serve, but struggled on the second. No longer, it seems. How would you hit the ball up when the racket face angle is closed as you recommended your trainee when he targeted long?
@EssentialTennis7 жыл бұрын
"Closed" is a relative term in the context that I used it....in other words, I was simply telling him to close the angle of his strings more than what they were on the previous repetition. Facing the strings down towards the court definitely wouldn't result in the ball traveling upwards! -Ian
