I used this basic idea for etching my makers mark on knife blades before I got access to a fibre laser at work... I used cricut vinyl on the metal rather than spray paint, but other than that much the same. I had a SUUUUPER cheap and sketchy diode laser off eBay which I used. Wouldn't even leave a faint trace of a line on the steel, but it burned through the vinyl perfectly...
