on that one cal on top of nate thing. unless sam levinson shows us a whole presentation saying that was sa, it's best not to assume outright that it was that. euphoria uses a shit ton of allegorical elements in its sequences (especially for their dream or high sequences). personally, i took it more as how cal and his tapes severely affected nate's sexual experiences to the point where him having sex with jules or him even acknowledging his own sexuality makes him think of his dad's own sexual experiences and stuff. also how nate and cal have similarities in how they treat the women they have been with and it shows nate's hypocrisy because now that he's the one receiving in the dream, it's all terrible and cold sweat. funny how losing his position of power in sex scares him when he's constantly abusing the power he has as a man over his lover. a lot to talk about in that whole nate dream sequence but i just think it's important to point out that story element because i've seen people take it at face value when euphoria is not a show to be taken at face value.

I think people keep going down this path of thinking that Nate is actually gay or something along those lines which I honestly do not see. so to summarize some of the things that just seem out of place: 1) the nightmare where Nate is in the same position as Jules represents how Cal still has some Nate in a metaphorical chokehold. 2) The scene where Lexi and Cassie were in the car is the same from season 1 but instead of Cassie's perspective (which was much more optimistic) Lexi was traumatized. Cassie craves male validation so it's makes sense why she wanted to get in the car and why Lexi didn't want to. 3) The scene with Leslie and Rue (to me at least as someone who has family members that were addicts) wasn't so much as an ultimatum but more just being blunt.
@euryvices2 жыл бұрын
I think the entire Cal and Nate scene seems to be hinting at something...well, abusive. Remember how his mom said something changed when he turned 8-9? Well, Rue tells us in Ep 6 (I think) that he never found the tapes till he was about 11-ish. I think the whole car scene explanation is exactly on point. Cassie always has needed male validation in her life, and gurllll do I pity her. Another thing I noticed in this episode was how Ashtray carried a knife in the room. Maybe nothing happens, cause ma baby Ash is there!! (on an unrelated note, are Aaron and Jo dating? I'm so sorry if that seems offensive, it's just something I picked up, kinda. God, I hope this doesn't get deleted TvT )

You're taking your own interpretation of the nightmare as if it was fact - when it isn't. Both yours and @Zafirah Javed's interpretations are very plausible, we just have to wait and see which side Sam Levinson takes the story to. However, two things can be true at the same time, and I personally believe both interpretations to be possibly true. As a side note, however, beyond Cal having Nate in a metaphorical chokehold, I think it also represents how Nate has an inner-layer of deep-seated shame (something which, by the way, often happens to victims of sexual trauma in childhood), and is terribly afraid of becoming everything he hates (aka his dad, the one who possibly abused him).

I think Rue's mom is trying a different approach to get through to Rue but it might also be that she's tired/drained of dealing with her and she's letting her know. I don't like that she told Rue she wouldn't care if she killed herself though, I don't think that's right to say to someone who's suicidal especially your child. But I sympathize with Rue's mom too.
@limerysmouse60052 жыл бұрын
Yeah there’s also a level of accountability you have to take as a parent when you have a mentally ill child. Whether it be genetics or a child’s environment, we are all products of how we are raised. Leslie chose to have a child, there are always consequences to that, good or bad.

I think Rues mom has just realized that she can’t want more for Rue than Rue wants for herself. With addiction, the addict has to WANT to get better in order to stay sober. I think she has identified that she has tried to get her to that point for so long, but now it’s time for Rue to do what they both know needs to happen. I think she’s definitely drained, but I didn’t find that to be the main thing she was meaning through her talking to her, and also don’t think it’s her being ok with Rue killing herself. I think she has just realized that she can’t drain herself and neglect her other child in the process trying to get Rue to realize that.

From a personal experience, its the worst feeling when your mom says she doesn't care if you'd kill yourself. I understand her perspective, but it's just not right
@didimay92 жыл бұрын
To be fair, unless I missed this, Rue's mum didn't say she wouldn't care if Rue killed herself. Obviously she would be devastated beyond words. That's her child. I think she was just trying a different approach with the situation. She sent her to rehab once and that didn't work. And then in the previous episode, she BEGGED the rehab to make space for Rue but they couldn't. So what more can she do? Lock her in her room forever? She's probably at a loss and maybe this is the only approach she hasn't tried yet. Rue's not just being some rebellious teen, she's literally a drug addict. Her mum can't change that. Rue's ultimately gonna make her own decisions with that shit, good or bad. And I think it's good/healthy for her mum to accept that, no matter how painful it is.

Yes but unfortunately despite being valid, was still not the best nor most productive way to say that. It ended up just as cruel as it was “eye-opening”. @@kaitlynm9463 my cousin was an addict. i have friends who are addicts. i’m also in college studying psychology and addiction takes up an enormous chunk of it. so it’s safe to say I have experience with this topic. just because rue is an addict, does not mean everyone around her has to step on eggshells and accommodate to her sensitivity. drug addicts will take advantage of everything good they have, especially kindness, support, and love. her mom said what needed to be said, and it wouldn’t have any effect on rue had she sugarcoated it. rue needs to understand just how much her addiction has affected the people around her, and her mom showed her that by telling her she’s basically given up on her. That rue’s addiction is so lethal to not only her, but to the care, love, and compassion the people around her have for her. she’s at a point in her addiction where she needs to lose everything, including her mothers support, to truly make the decision to get clean. And i’m not saying this is the case for all addicts, some of them are able to get clean with that support. But there’s also a lot of them who are so deep into their addiction, that there is no choice left but for them lose everything good they have to genuinely want to be sober.

TW: S/A I've not watched euphoria so correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure previously it's been implied that nate is a CSA survivor from his dad. I saw someone say this on Twitter, but dreams like like that are common amongst those who are survivors of CSA as a result of PTSD.

Yes but not physical abuse. He was exposed to violent porn from a very young age and, I don't know where you guys are from but in my country, that's also a form of S/A.

Literally nothing ever implied that Cal had pedophilic tendencies. Going for young adults/late teens doesn't mean he would do the same to CHILDREN. Yall act like Nate finding those videos at a young age wouldn't be enough to make him disturbed by and/or afraid of his dad.
@Marina-cq2yt2 жыл бұрын
@@a.j.1819 it's the fact that mate found the tapes at 11 years old and nates mom said he darkened and stopped kissing his father at nine years old - that combined with the vision of his father on top of him COULD suggest that SOMETHING happened. It could also just be unrelated. But nothing in this show is ever random, I feel. Nates conversation with his mom left much to be considered.
@a.j.18192 жыл бұрын
@@Marina-cq2yt Rue is an unreliable narrator so it doesn't have to actually have been at 11 years old. If it was something else, it could be something involving the third son we haven't been introduced to. Once again, Cal never showed any signs of pedophilia. Apparently none of you are aware that there is a huge difference between being attracted to young adults/late teens (17-18) and ACTUAL CHILDREN let alone your own son. Like do you realize what you're saying ? Nate's dream incluced Cassie, Jules & Maddy. All three he's felt sexual attraction towards. Sexual attraction is to him, thanks to Cal, something dark and threatening, something to dominate someone else with. That's why Nate can't seperate sexuality and the fear of/disgust by his dad.

That Cal/Nate scene is showing either 1. Nate feeling controlled by his dad 2. Nate is putting himself in Jule’s shoes because he’s in love with her Or 3. He feels sexually attracted to his dad And I’m hoping to god it’s not number 3.

I think the reasoning on why Rues mom said that to her was understandable and valid. I mean Rues drug addiction has clearly affected Gia a lot and she’s sick of only focusing on Rue and her sobriety when Rue doesn’t really try to get sober but at the same time....Rue is only 17, she’s still a kid and I think her mom just threatening her and basically saying that when she’s 18 she’ll kick her out and that she can go ahead and kill herself and that she doesn’t care anymore because she’s only gonna focus on Gia was....cruel and Rue suffers from other stuff like it’s not just her drug addiction but she does have other mental disorders and has repeatedly said that she wants to kill herself and that she can’t stand living and you can tell she does have a lot of guilt in her heart about everything and I can’t even imagine how hurt she must have been after hearing something like that. Her feelings are valid but the way she went about it was harsh and I think it would have been better if she sat down with Rue and said that she needs to start thinking about Gia more and I get she was probably tryna do the whole tough love thing but come on....I think people keep forgetting that Rue is a still a kid, I wish people would empathise with her more I mean imagine being a suicidal 17 year old child with a crippling drug addiction and multiple different mental disorders and you still haven’t properly processed your fathers death and it affects you and your mental state a lot and your own mother is like yeah you can kill your self I’m pretty much giving up on you LIKE I’d be crushed but at the same time it’s understandable since Rue doesn’t want help and doesn’t want to help herself and there’s only so much someone can do to help someone who doesn’t want to be helped but it’s still hurtful and harsh to say stuff like that to your own child

With the moms comments. My dad did the same thing. From my pov at the time it felt awful. Almost like he was giving up on me. But how that I’m a little older I definitely see where he was coming from and his intentions. There are plenty of other options than saying “u wanna kys go ahead” as a child it definitely fucks with you, I even struggle to this day a little but you just have to remind your self that it was never literal.

No, Rue’s mom did the right thing. When you know someone with an addiction, they have to get better on their own and sometimes you need to let go for your own well-being as well as the other people around the addict. Sometimes you’ve done all you can do, and you have to let go of them. People don’t want to get better until they’ve hit rock bottom a lot of the time.

I think the Kal and Nate scene is a representation on how Nate is affected by watching Kals tapes, that he maybe relates to the victims. the scene just visually shows that he feels like the victim with his dad using him, messing him up. Idk if I worded it correctly but yeah, I feel like that’s what it means, not that he was actually SA but mentally through the tapes
@viola70522 жыл бұрын
I personally think Nate was SA’d by his dad. It was kind of implied in episode 6 when his mom said he started to change/become darker at around 8/9 but we know from season 1, Nate saw the tapes at 11 so it wasn't that. She also says he would kiss her goodnight before bed but he didn't kiss his dad which is weird for a young child and weird she pointed it out unless she was hinting at something. I saw on Twitter someone saying that Nate had such a strong reaction to his dad touching him/being on top of him in season 1, in that episode when he freaks out after wrestling with his dad and it was probably a flashback/PTSD reaction to being abused. I hope we actually find out what happened to him because this show can be very surreal/confusing.
@a.j.18192 жыл бұрын
I'ma need yall to learn how to think. Nothing ever implied anything like that. He "freaked out" when he was on top of him because he hates him, he's disguted by him, he was literally having a breakdown. Yall act like seeing your dad's pornos at 11 year old isn't enough to mess up a child. And most importantly, it was NEVER implied that Cal is pedophilic. Just because he likes twinks and 17/18 year olds doesn't mean he's attracted to actual children. Yall just running with it is incredible insensitive and ignorant to what actual pedophilia is. If the mom was referring to something other than him finding the tapes, it could be something involving the third son we saw in the family portrait.

@@a.j.1819 why does he hate him and is disgusted by him?
@viola70522 жыл бұрын
@@a.j.1819 I think you need to read between the lines more, it’s not that far fetched for a man who has sex with high school kids and has other predatory sexual habits (like filming people without their consent) to be a pedophile as well. I don’t see how taking about the reality of childhood sexual abuse is insensitive in any way…if anything, this is starting a dialogue about something that people like to ignore/brush under the rug. Anyway, this is a television show, it’s art meaning it’s open to interpretation…unless you’re Sam Levinson, your predictions are just as accurate/inaccurate as mine.
@a.j.18192 жыл бұрын
@@viola7052 Oh my god, I need to you educate yourself on what pedophilia is, for the love of god. Yes, it is INCREDIBLY far fetched to assume someone attracted to young adults would be attracted to CHILDREN. Jules and the other guys we saw on the tapes were adults, young adults, but adults over the age of 18. Remember Jules lied about being older, Cal didn't know. Pedophiles DO NOT seek out sex with adults. Pedophiles are attracted to children up to the age of 11, pre-pubescent and underdeveloped. Do you see how that is absolutely not the same as being attracted to 18 year olds ? YOU need to read between the lines: Nate seing those tapes at 11 completely messed up his view on sex and sexuality. His nightmare included Jules, Cassie & Maddie, all three he feels sexual attraction towards. Now thanks to his trauma, what does Nate associate sexuality with ? His dad. That combined with feeling dominated by and controlled by his dad manifests as him seeing himself under his dad, submissive.

One thing I wanted to mention is that Leslie's conversation with Rue was a flashback to the night Ali came over (the timeline was a bit confusing to me up until they showed Maddy confronting Cassie). Because he told Leslie to look after Gia and let Rue figure her shit out on her own. Hence Leslie being blunt with Rue about whether or not she decides to take her recovery seriously this time.
