If you’re looking for a funky small city car then there’s now a lot of choice in the lower-priced EV market. We conduct a group test of six 30k cars (which can all be leased for around £300/month) to crown a winner. In test 1 we take each EV for a quick test drive to assess road manners and general civility. They need to make a good impression as the three worst will be eliminated. Watch our brand new series, Thursdays at 9pm on Quest or via Discovery+ www.discoveryplus.co.uk/show/...

Exactly! Iv experienced 3 of them and absolutely no way the Fiat500e would ever be eliminated by cars that have serious limitations on range (although lovely Honda); are based on ICE cars and have all the problems related to that, or are immensely more expensive and with worst range (Aka Mini). I chouse the 500e based on the amazing diving feel, the range, the price and the fact that it looks amazing etc. Based on real personal experience, i have to disagree in all aspects of this review. Spot OFF! PS: I seriously like them all and would consider the Honda if it was cheaper and with considerable more range! All of the are better then ICE cars.

No way a regular and normal driver would come to the conclusion they did (or even an 35 yo driver accustomed to driving pocket rockets hatchbacks, and bog bore motorcycles)! Absolutely no way! I have personally experienced 3 of them (the Fiat 500e, the Mini and the Zoe) and absolutely no way the Fiat500e (or the Zoe in that matter) would ever be eliminated in a comparison with cars that have serious limitations on range (although lovely Honda); or are based on ICE cars and have all the problems related to that, or are immensely more expensive and with worst range (Aka Mini). I ended up buying the 500e based on the amazing driving feel - its very, very planted and immensely fun to drive, be sure of that, the range, the price and the fact that it looks really amazing (and its very easy to park in the city!). I even gone on 500kms journeys no problem whatsoever (and I'm 51...no so young anymore). Based on real personal experience, i have to profoundly disagree in all aspects of this review. Spot OFF! Most of us buy small city cars to drive everyday, and manly commute for home to office and back, and park in the city. IT also very, very important to a real EV owner to have the range for emergencies etc. You must reevaluate you review or put on a part 2 to address this aspects of your very much loved channel! PS:I like all of them and really like the Honda E! Sincerely I thought the mini needs a refresh - manly in the interior - , and the 206 is fine but the same as the ICE one - although amazing practicality - .

I’ve got the 500 e too and having a blast over the moor roads in that I wouldn’t say it leans, as you’ve said and adding to that, the steering is precise and it’s extremely fun to drive, it takes corners nearly at the same pace as my old Giulia did too and that was a world renowned chassis 🤷🏻‍♂️

I don't have a 500e but I drive it very often since it's in a Car Sharing fleet where I live. Personally I never noticed the excessive body roll, both when driving or being driven, although a friend of mine did start to feel car sick in it. I have driven the Mini E and the petrol 206 (i know that it weighs way less than the e206) and i agree that the Mini seriously needs a refresh but their suspensions did feel a bit more planted. Either way I don't think the 500e should've been disqualified just for it's suspensions, however they probably wanted to point out the difference in suspensions between the cars and I agree that the 500e is slightly softer (at least softer than the Mini)

Rag a car round a track and then exclude cars with soft suspension? Have they not noticed speed bumps in cities? Range? First consideration: acceleration/brake will destroy range and if you live in the city and park on the street you have to rely on commercial chargers. Maximum range is key. Rear seats: didn’t even see them. Kids? 3 seats rather than two (like the mini) Boot: you need a decent boot for the weekly shop and carrying kids’ sports kit etc. Boots were not even featured. Not to some, for me as an example I have off-street parking and my average daily drive as a tradesman is 12 miles round trip, so even a 50 miles range would do me a good part of the week. I used to think the same, that manufacturers were mad for making cars with short ranges. But in hindsight, it makes sense to have short ranges and small batteries, not everyone needs a huge battery and range, with associated costs. But I understand for those without a place to charge at home, a long range means a once a week/fortnight trip to a charger. It really does depend on the consumer needs.
@craddocraddoc

@@matthewnightingale4675 but in this case the honda e is as expensive as a car with bigger batteries, and with that range completely limited to urban traffic. I couldn't even visit my parents in the next bigger city with this car without charging stops, which is the next problem because it can't even charge that fast (like the ioniq 5). So if you do any comparison the honda is not worth the price, since nearly every other company makes better electric vehicles. The only reason to buy it is for the looks, which is not enough if I'm looking for a new car which would be not my second or third car with a spare diesel SUV behind the house but as the only one to use every day and for every trip I take.

"We test all bikes on track and rate them from there." - Harley Davidson 1 star, BMW 1 star, Suzuki GSXR1000r 10 stars etc etc etc. The best thing was they would even score sports bikes as the most comfortable under the rationale of "We're used to bent over forward bikes so sitting more upright is uncomfortable to ride...." 😕 Car journalism going the same routes I see.

What's the most important attribute a driver looks for in an EV? RANGE, not its performance on a track. The Mini, Honda & Fiat are what gives EV's a bad name. Having driven the majority of EV's available over the last decade, these 3 are among the one's I don't recommend people purchase. I don't recommend any EV to a person who asks, but I will say don't touch that one for legitimate reasons. If an EV does what it says on the tin people will buy it in larger numbers & the few gullible will buy the marketing blurb and ignore the fundamentals of an EV.

Is this a sick joke or something, guys, how can you "eliminate" Zoe, the car with the biggest battery of all and with the single fastest AC charging, which are the 2 pillars of an actual CITY BLOOMING CAR, which you usually want to charge on cheap/free AC when shopping. This is hilariously bad, people, take the video down for your own sake.

the fastest AD charging is the fiat with a maximum of 11 kW and it is the fastest AC charger4 wit 85 kW. and the zoe is an absolute no-go: zero point in NCAP (five for the fiat)

@jamesstanley7263 2 жыл бұрын
Lol what has happened to fifth gear? Not only are they pandering to the ‘youth’ by only reviewing EV’s. They are clearly favouring newer models, probably due to backhanders from manufacturers. None of the others come close to the Zoe from a prospective buyers point of view. This programme has zero journalistic integrity.
@matthewnightingale4675
@matthewnightingale4675 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think they are pandering to the youth, they are moving with the times and targeting an audience and market share which exists. It is only 8 years away before you can no longer buy an ICE vehicle and this content will be more useful to consumers when it comes to buying a vehicle new or second hand compared with Top Gear for instance. I think it is a bold move and one which is well thought out and will pay off. Let's not forget that these people are also more television personalities rather then hard-core journalists like writers of Autocar, so expect some exaggerated and flair with a review rather than a barsge of facts, for those watch the videos from carbuyer and the likes.

I am disappointed by these tests. Range: why does everyone want the most range? Yes it will be beneficial to some, however we don't complain about the size of ICE car fuel tanks. For me a long range and big battery is a pointless expense when my average daily journey is 12 miles between clients, I am a tradesman. A lot of people with access to a home charger won't mind small batteries and short ranges once they realise that the range is in relation to your needs, you don't ask a dealer to fit a 100ltr fuel tank to a Kia Picanto. My one holiday a year which requires over 200 miles of driving shouldn't make me spend an additional £4k on the top spec battery on a car which only moves 12 miles a day for most of the year. Not every pair of shoes I buy are walking boots becuase once a year I travel to Snowdonia for a holiday. Handling is so often not key to choosing your car. The 500e is a phenomenal car and to see it criticised so soon becuase it doesn't handle as well doing 50mph on a B-road seems irrelevant for a city car which will be used in and around town as the majority of the ICE equivalent 500s are now. I love a car which rolls in corners, it adds some fun to it and character. My favourite car was my Mk2 Fiat Panda and that was not a drivers car in the slightest. The questions that should be considered is usability, pricing, technology and how fit they are for the purpose they were designed for. Despite being in the same city car segment, both the Mini and 500 are not the same as the Zoe or 208 which are bigger 5 door hatches. These were both designed as small cars for mostly single or two person occupancy with the luggage capacity in relation to their expected passengers. Both are small three door hatches with premium styling targeting an audience clearly seen from the sales of their ICE counterparts and driven mostly in towns and cities. Neither are used daily for long commutes so short ranges are acceptable and as they sell for a premium above competitors they are often bought by people with a driveway and a place to charge - their target audience. Please review more as a consumer rather than a racing driver becuase most people like me are interested in motor sport - but if my car choice has some body roll that won't put me off. Do this for models like the Porsche Taycan or Audi Etron GT which are supposed to be sporty. But not a citycar with no intention of being a racing car and who's owners are unlikely to take them more than 40 on a B road.

As a dedicated EV sceptic, I've been binge watching 5th Gear Recharged hoping to be converted. Unfortunately, nothing I've seen yet has addressed my scepticism. The main issues with EVs, regarding ordinary motorists, is price and range anxiety.....so what do these revered motoring journalists judge their group EV tests on?.....how fast it goes round a track. The same is done comparing an EV with it's petrol equivalent. Better to compare how long it takes, and how convenient it is, to get the vehicles from, maybe, Lands End to John 'O Groats, or just London to Edinburgh. Either way, because of charge time and limited range, the ICE would win out. Great programme, needs more honesty, balance and relevance!

Pointless rant. Anything 50kwh or bigger is pleanty of range for these type of City cars. The only problem is Slow Charging as they realy should be close to 125kw DC Level 3 as much as possible. When you combine 50kwh plus & Properly Fast DC Charger there is not range problem for this use case.

I own the Mini Cooper S Electric. It's important to note that it's based upon the BMW i3s. The low down weight of all the electrical tech gives the car a more heavy and solid feel without affecting the handling much at all. It does feel honestly a fair bit better than the ICE version of the same car. As for the interior, there is a fair bit of recycled plastic material (same as the BMW i3 too) but it doesn't feel flimsy at all. It's all well put together, and the buttons and switches feel like they will last a long time. Especially with the recent facelift that this model got, it does look a little more classy. Reliability will no longer be a worry either. Electric cars are naturally way more reliable. Almost no moving parts or fluids. You've removed so many points of failure.

t your so called "test" is ridiculous, and most of the contributers like the fiat and they know why. would you send some handicapped person to compete with athlets? what you tested is far away from daily use you screwed it, and i tell you why you doing the fiat wrong: it is intended to be primarily an URBAN CAR, not made for speeding on country roads with wannabe car racers it has a small turning circle, a gread acceleration , 3 seconds from zero to 50 makes it swift in the city traffic, not designed ro race on ountry roads. it charges extremely fast with 85 kW DC and 11AC, charging 50 kilometers in 5 minutes. the range is 400 km in the city traffic, the steering is not for high speed but for easy handling in the city with many curves. the same is for the chassis. the trunk is not mnade fpor long vacations but rather for the shopping. it isnt a 4´-seater but a 2+2 perfext for singles or couples who ddo not want to carry empty space with them so you see: within its "hunting area" it beats all rivals. of course the fiat lost, because you chose the conditions under which it HAD TO LOSE your "test"? only one word again: RIDICULOUS
