It reminds me of how my Sociology A-levels are structured, split between studying the Internal and External reasons to why an issue is occurring. Your previous Eva analysis is the Internal while this vid is the External. I also want to say that your use of Anno’s interviews really adds to the legitimacy of what you’re observing, it’s clear to me now how incredibly dense Eva is, Anno, and the other creators of the show who I can’t name, really had a lot going through their heads. Very interesting video well done. I find it interesting how Anno says he would be embarrassed to sit in a bar and talk to a girl about being an animator. Given the over production and almost over saturation of anime into pop culture especially now here in the West I wonder how he would have approached things in today's world. Anime is so mainstream that "otaku" is almost a harmless joke and even somewhat normalized now. I remember being in high school in 1997 and first getting into bootleg anime VHS tapes haha and I was TERRIFIED to mention it to anyone given the harsh criticism of being a "nerd" or "otaku". I think every subculture trend has this early stage and some remain underground and it actually enhances it's appeal. I think anime has seen some great stories and animations but in general there is a lot of mass production units (no pun intended) and can feel templated now more than ever (Issekai anyone?). I find the Rebuild series to be interesting and actually like how he wrapped it up but I am a hard core fan of the original ending movie in 1998. Rebuild had a dramatic shift of perspective in his retelling of the story however I feel it was more of a "sarcasm" towards otaku fantasy withdraw issues. I really wonder how Anno would have approached Evangelion today if it had never been created in the past. But as an artist myself I can understand how you are never satisfied with your final work - there's always a better way to do it and it can always be improved. To be an artist is to struggle and he had the courage to keep going and create a cultural icon.

Any chance we will get a Video on rebuild of EVA? Because the end seems very straight forward Shinji creates a new reality for himself and safes the old one for everyone who came to terms with what happend. So they can life in piece with their lifes that they created, example: Asuka finding companionship in Kensuke. But when you think about it there are plotholes that I cant figure out like Asuka, Rei, Kaworu and the explosive necklace being at the trainstation in the new "reality" where Evas never existed. Which doesnt make any sense since 2 of them are hinted to be clones while the other is an Angel which wouldnt exist in that universe. The other thing that I cant fit into the narrative is the discussion betwen Mari and Fuyutsuki in which it is hinted that they know each other and Mari being a traitor "Judas-figure". I know there was some fantheory that Mari was a younger self (or perhaps child) of a Scientist Gendo and Yui worked with but never really made any sense to me. Fuyutsuki exploding into orange juice like the Rei Clone doesnt really fit either because how could he be a clone if he is supposed to have been Gendos and Yuis mentor. Really love your essays and perspective on the more underlying reasons and would be interesting to see how you deal with the rebuilds considering your know how and knowledge about the original.
@Victor-um9ce3 жыл бұрын
Kensuke is more of a father figure then a partner to Asuka I'd say. And it's weird, since making a completely seperate reality is exactly what NGE and EoE was against doing, the end of evangelion was about accepting your life as it is without trying to use escapism to avoid the problems of your life completely. That's why in EoE and the end of NGE we saw different realities created by Shinji's subconscious that would be better than the current one but he settles with what he has trying to continue with his life and start actually liking himself. This ending seems like another form of escape for Shinji a world without any of the pain of piloting the Eva which isn't what either the end of the original series or the movie had in mind, and the way Shinji and Rei call it Neon Genesis is making me believe that the rebuilds are one of these realities that Shinji created at the original human instrumentality project and it just loops back into the originals with the blue sea and lack of red slash across the moon.

Very rarely do I log on youtube, and very rarely if at all do I leave a comment. This video is a well deserved exception. You've come further than most in understanding Evangelion. However, I think you have only taken the first step in this direction. There is still much more that has been left unsaid, and that's probably by design: after all, 'anime' as 'animation' is the focus of this video. This is no coincidence: 'anime' begins with Space Battleship Yamato, before that, we have what Japanese fans called Terebi Manga. The shift from Terebi Manga to Anime came when fans like young Anno started caring about the animation process itself. This collective gain in awareness finally materialized with the first Gundam movie, and the Proclamation of the New Age. Shin Seiki Sengen, Shin Seiki Evangelion. That's where the starting point is. Evangelion and the Rebuild are anime about anime, they narrate a story about history. It is no coincidence that the Rebuilds have the Third Impact occur in the second movie, as opposed to the end of the series: the world of the Third Impact, after all, is still roughly twenty years behind when compared to the world in which Rebuild is being projected on screen. All in all, good stuff. I hope you keep it up.

Great analysis on Evangelion. The history of anime is so important for Eva, but most people who analyze it are only familiar with 90s-now anime so don’t have the context to get a fully realized analysis, so I thank you for that. Evangelion is hated by a large portion of people who are mecha fans that call it not unique, but this video proves how important it was to the genre and medium so that you for that.

imo the isekai genre is escapism from the reality of how saturated anime had become. but in trying to escape the then present cycle of anime tropes and production its actually come to oversaturate anime even more. It maybe extreme but personally its hard to to not see the similarities between the rise of the isekai genre with the rise of hikikomori. Very interresting analysis, i never thought to place the meaning and ideology of Evangelion in the context of the history and heritage of anime and it's progenitors. Ever heard the term “Get woke, go broke”? Anyway, that is neither here, nor there and a subject for another time. As far as Evangelion is concerned, as well the video essay, it explores the meta-narrative of what the show represents. What happened within the “Otaku” culture, what stunted their emotional and cultural growth has nothing to do with any ambiguous ideological or cultural power structures, it was the collective trauma they suffered being the first and only victims are nuclear warfare. There is a reason NO ONE has initiated it since; the absolute destruction and inhumane suffering it caused is beyond the scope of anything civilized nations would ever consider inflicting on even the worst of people. Thank you for the video, JumpTheShark. I'm surprised that you did not mention the irony in Evangelion contributing to Otakuism and the problems Anno highlighted rather than diminishing them. But perhaps you would have a different take on the matter.
@gloomywheel83782 жыл бұрын
I'm in the same boat as you, He talked briefly near the end about anime doubling down on the escapist culture but what he didn't really mention was that Eva ironically was a major contributor to that culture. I've talked to a good handful of Eva fans and most of them despite loving the series either failed to piece together its themes on escapism or simply didn't care enough to try and draw any meaning from the show, usually because they get caught up in the convoluted nonsensical plot of Eva. This miscommunication between the viewer and the anime led to the serious catastrophe that was Eva's lasting effect on the anime industry, it tried to convey these themes and the people it tried to convey them to just want cool robot fights. Because of this Evangelion got contorted, Rei and Asuka ended up being targets for extreme sexualization even though Eva originally tried to keep any sexual imagery as meaningful commentary instead of fanservice. From what I see this is what the first the 2.22 and 3.33 rebuilds aimed to correct and I thought they did it quite well. In 2.22 Anno essentially gave the fans an Evangelion fanfiction filled with essences of meaningless fanservice, anime trope harem shit, and even a mary sue. 3.33 Is where this mostly ends and starts focusing on what to do going forward. The thing I like about these shows is the themes take center stage and are spelled out quite simply. 3.0 + 1.0 felt like Anno caving in and trying to return to his artsy ways filled with a convoluted nonsensical plot except this time with a ton of fanservice. Did you not like any of the rebuilds or just certain ones in particular?
@galenpemberton43822 жыл бұрын
@@gloomywheel8378 I agree and disagree with you in a few areas. I liked 1.11. It was just a recap essentially I know, but there was a scene in it that actually improved upon the original source material by demonstrating the hedgehog dilemma flawlessly. Shinji is on the escalator with Rei and ask questions while stepping closer to her only to be slapped in the face once he insults Gendo. All the while one of my favorite songs from the series, Dilemmic Triangle played softly in the background. It was very well done and gave me hope for the rest of the Rebuild Movies. I liked 2.22 well enough. I say this because unlike the original series, it went out of its way to highlight the progression of Rei developing a personality and how that was affecting her decisions and relationships. It was something I craved greatly when watching the original series and was glad to see it. Did that make up for Mari's BS introduction and the frankly stomach curling amount of butt shots ruining serious moments? I say it breaks even. Also Shinji gaining agency and saving Rei was something I also enjoyed and made me excited for the future Rebuild movies. 3.33 was so awful that me and my friend who I watched all the Rebuild Movies with kept pausing because we were either laughing too hard or were considering stopping. It introduced several new characters. It was super obvious that the new females were just there to sell figurines btw. The new characters that mind you, not a single person cares about, took up far too much screen time. The plot was entirely nonsensical and took the BS jargon to level 99. So, I'd say I'm something of an expert and the macguffins and plot in Eva, right? But I was completely lost. There's too much for me to say honestly on why 3.33 was one of the worst things I've ever seen, but lets fast forward to the end. So Shinji sees the two spears. Literally everyone is telling him not to grab it. Even kaworu, the person who literally knows everything and Shinji is like "nah, that's them." It was hilarious. Also Rei being another random clone and having no memories made 1.11 and 2.22 seem completely pointless. Moving on to Thrice Upon a Time, I knew it was impossible to save this mess of a movie franchise and was right. The CGI was so bad btw that I almost quit 10 minutes in. Once again more characters no one knows anything about getting screen time. Shinji is catatonic half the movie. Asuka being annoying without the depth she used to have. Mari exists. Speaking of Mari, isn't she actually like 50 or something??? Let's just ignore that I guess. Rei's "Arc" felt pointless. Not to mention Asuka mentioned that Rei was just programmed to like Shinji anyway so nothing she did mattered. By the end of the movie I was just praying for it all to end. The ending was actually not too bad. I liked the framing device of closing up a movie set. However, Shinji getting with Mari was a final middle finger to everyone who had questioned her existence. I have more I could go into detail with but won't. Mostly because my carpel tunnel is acting up this week. However, I want to address how you mentioned the plot was convoluted and nonsensical in the OG show. I'll just say the major difference in show and the Rebuild movies was the focus. The plot in the show and EoE serviced the characters and remained a fascinating backdrop that in itself was almost a character. Meanwhile in the Rebuild movies they throw out random jargon as if its relevant and we should care about it when it doesn't service the story and definitely not the characters. Ultimately, Eva's existence and lasting impact is the type of great irony not even fiction could capture.
@gloomywheel83782 жыл бұрын
@@galenpemberton4382 Well the thing is with 2.22 the bad tropy writing is kinda the point. Its suppose to be a contorted world in which Anno gives the "problematic fans" the evengelion that they thought they wanted. Theres a lot of evidence to show that this is intended. developing Rei more and shinji acting on his own volition more is also part of this, realistically these characters shouldn't be acting this way, Rei shouldn't be so easily subjected to emotions and should be showing more resistance while shinji shouldn't be as confident and decisive but they are in the movies because that's what the audience claims to want. Even you yourself said you wanted this. As for 3.33 I will die on the hill that this movie is good. You mention it introducing new characters but outside of the already established characters in the Eva world the only new characters I can think of that were introduced were the crew members and toji's little sister. Midori is the only girl I can think of possibly selling any figurines but shes really not significant enough to do that. Can you mention specifically which new character got too much screentime? I don't really remember any of the new characters having much screentime at all. You also mentioned the plot brought the jargon up significantly but the plot of 3.33 is insanely straight forward compared to that of the original, I still don't understand the underlying plot of the original series even after watching 2 or 3 videos on it but I understood 3.33's story on first watch. Shinji nearly caused thrid impact, Misato rebelled against NERV after learning about instrumentality and near the end shinji nearly causes fourth impact, The only jargon BS I can see in there really is how the two spears work but that's still much simpler than anything that happens in the original. You mention the scene where shinji grabs the two spears, but it makes complete sense for shinji to actually do this despite being told by asuka and (near the end) kowaru not to. Shinji literally destroyed almost the entire world by trying to save Rei in 2.22 and is left with nothing, not even Rei as a result. Kowaru convinced Shinji that if they retrieve the spears they can make everything right again, even after kowaru realizes this isn't true he isn't able to convince shinji about it because this is the only road shinji sees for any sort of redemption. he's become infatuated with the slightest chance of being able to undo the destruction he brought upon his world (hence the name of the movie being called "You Can (Not) Redo") and once again makes an impulsive decision which in this case ends up costing him his only friends life. Lastly, Rei being a clone is actually a pretty genius metanarrative. In third impact Shinji sacrificed the world in order to save Rei, essentially giving up on the world if it means he can be with his "waifu" and when he does this what does he get? A hollow shell of a person that only aims to be whatever shinji wants her to be and has no agency of her own, essentially a "waifu" and not a really person, which is what he actually wanted. as for 3.33 yea I cant tell you what the fuck happened in that shit.
@galenpemberton43822 жыл бұрын
@@gloomywheel8378 So thanks for the response. You're different perspective is very interesting since there are few people I get to discuss this with. So to be clear, I didn't want the Rebuild movies to be the same as the show, since then it would be kind of pointless. You didn't accuse me of that, but I feel the need to say that to justify my liking of 2.22. Shinji gaining more agency as a person and Rei developing a personality were things I enjoyed because yes, I did want to see it, but also because I thought it was going to be the foundation of something else in the later movies. 3.33 felt like a punishment to watch. Maybe that was brilliant now that I'm thinking about it. 3.33 wasn't entertaining in any way. Crushed the hope you had after watching 2.22 that any amount of good could ever be achieved no matter how much you want it. And you say it was very coherent in what actually happens as if that's always a good thing. The oddly surreal and nonsensical background, for me anyway, was a reflection of the characters mental state in the show. The story for 3.33 was as dull as the set design and characters, which now that I think about it might also have been intentional after the vibrant nature of 2.22. The crew of the Battleship Yamoto or whatever the airship Misato was the captain didn't actually take up as much screen time as I thought. They mostly just featured in the first 10 to 15 minutes or so. The pink haired girl in the crew I felt was definitely a bid at selling some figurines as she got the most speaking roles of the group later in Thrice. For some reason it just felt that the crew had gotten more screen time on the first watch. My bad. As for the explanation on the two spears, it makes a lot more sense explained in that way, however, it will still always be funny to me. Also, after hearing out your explanation I do agree with you on Rei. I think the reason I didn't like it was because I was expecting something more akin to Rei 3. That was a bit short sighted on my part to be honest. So ultimately, 3.33 was just really boring. This coming from someone who finds more enjoyment in great dialogue than a fight scene. It trivialized the 3rd Impact into just some random event. I think Mari got less screen time than in 2.22 now that I think about it so maybe that was a improvement lol. I still have no idea why Kaowru put that collar on himself and didn't just throw it away. Maybe I missed something. There wasn't a single character who I felt even a remote interest in, nor was there a single plot point I felt a remote interest in. Maybe that's a failing on my part.

Maybe you need the psychology of the author to explain the reasons and story behind the project. But it has nothing to do with the esthetical worth of the work of art, nor with the cultural impact of the work. I wish people would shut up about Anno's depression and instead talk about the product of his work.

Okay, but what about it as a rendering of existence, and of carnal desires and an inability coexist with others? I mean shit you said a lot yet I gleaned almost none of what you said about it from the show. It's very surreal and open ended but I still think it'll remain mostly about the trials of human relationships and of perpetually illusory nature of existence than about a deconstruction or reflection of Japanese culture, anime and present or past metanarratives, mostly because they matter far more in my opinion.

Interesting video but if I've learned anything from the rebuilds it's that Anno defiantly isn't who deserves the entire credit. He's an excellent director and visionary but I think his writing is actually pretty jank. Evangelion is a product of the most talented artists of its era, it isn't a product of one man, and the Rebuilds proved it. They suffered Prequel syndrome, nuff said.
@Jayfive2763 жыл бұрын
There’s a behind the scenes doc of the making of the final rebuild film - Anno surrounds himself with very talented people, drives them (and himself) to breaking point but those staff are fiercely loyal and will run through brick walls for him. These people are the one who interpret the things in Anno’s head and deserve as much credit for that as he does for coming up with them.
@kgblagden3 жыл бұрын
@@Jayfive276 And there were plenty of talented people who were fiercely loyal to Lucas. Maybe if they were a little less willing to "run through brick walls for him" and give a little push back on his shittier ideas and could maybe even share their own then the films would've turned out infinitely better.
@breadeater11943 жыл бұрын
That argument doesn't hold up unless you can actually name and give examples of who these missing writers are. The loss of animators like Yoshinari and Imaishi is unfortunate, but a lot of the writers of the original were still there. I think the reasons for the Rebuilds' shortcomings is just as simple as that the same people made another thing and it wasn't as good. It's also hard to say Anno fails as an auteur when you look at the credits. Anno shared the director credit for all the Rebuilds with at least two other people per movie. Meanwhile Godzilla, which he only had one co-director on, was better than all of them. He absolutely does not deserve all the credit, because collaborative art shouldn't work that way, but he's still a unique talent and I don't think a better staff would have fixed the issues with Rebuild. (Also I think regardless of who you credit for Eva's writing, the points in the video hold up, maybe even better since the video does say, consistently "Eva is not just one man's feelings")

@amanofnoreputation21643 жыл бұрын
It's not what he means. Voice actors only feel like stars when they're at a convention or something. In everyday life, they don't feel so important. It's a bit like that. Society respects a great writer or a great film director, but an anime director? Who cares. He makes fluff for a living. Like Anno said -- you're not going to convince a girl in a bar you're a big player because you make Asian cartoons. We can appreciate that isn't the case, if only for the pathological amounts of stress animators are under -- but on the whole, they are not seen as producing something important for posterity or what have you. And that's shameful. Not just for the anime productions that don't go that extra mile or the audiences who miss out, but society that let's the potential of the medium pass it by. What I beileve Anno is saying is the medium should aim to be taken seriously as art, not just to achieve satisfaction. And for that to happen, the people who consume anime need to demand it. It's a tall order for all concerned. The same issue is faced in gaming. We have to assert games are art because we can't quite convince ourselves that it is. It has too many guilty associations with it.

While i appreciate the work put into this video i can't help but think that a lot of what you're diving into here isn't conscious work on behalf of the studio. some of the ideas presented come across as pandering to pseudointellectualism, drawing lines between figures that don't necessarily exist within the media itself. Utilising the word 'Freudian' in the context it is in a lot of places here is kind of just incorrect but certainly serves to enhance the *cromulence* of the video. That aside, there are a lot of interesting angles that, even if they don't hold up to further scrutiny or are easily dismissed, are worth hearing. It's a lens through which i hadn't seen the show viewed although i do think that some effort could have been made to reducing the discourse about Yamato and various other cold war era anime that have... nearly no bearing on the title of the video whatsoever. I can't necessarily say that i enjoyed the video, but i can certainly say that i appreciate it.
@StudioErsatz2 жыл бұрын
The discussion surrounding Yamato and other "cold war era anime" is relevant because it demonstrates a shift in these creators' outlook on the medium. To put it simply, one is more optimistic about the potential of this technological endeavour that is anime, and the other is more pessimistic. This pessimism, as embodied in Evangelion, manifests itself as a "death," or perhaps even the murder of the medium, by stepping back out into reality. That's... what the title means. Yamato, being one of the most influential anime of all time (especially on Anno's generation), justifies its position as an object of analysis in this video. As is explained in the video. And, naturally, in a video all about the development of artists' attitudes towards the medium and genre conventions, it's important to mention earlier mecha anime as well. With regards to your other points: I don't believe all of this was a "conscious" decision on behalf of the studio, and I don't know why that would be relevant. The socio-cultural context speaks for itself. Unless you hold the position that this context does not in any way affect artistic production, then it must be taken into account. And, needless to say, Freud is of course relevant to a discussion of Evangelion, as his ideas are adressed at various levels of explicitness throughout the course of the series, but also because I'm working within Bloom's framework of Freudian rivalries.
