I don't know if they did that only with computers but it's a pretty hard thing to do to the finger level, so I'm gonna guess that no, at least partly it was animated. If they recorded it then reanimated it frame by frame, well, that's not a new thing. There's clips of Disney doing this with actresses and stylizing the movements of dresses IRL, the body language of the actress, etc. That's not to say it isn't cool now because the effect it had on animating Barbie was very powerful and made her seem outstandingly alive, so kudos.

Apparently they also talk about how at one point the company was run by mostly men which caused for some more sexist toys? (I'll find out when I watch it) It just breaks my heart a little when people call Barbie sexist / misogynistic as she was created from a feminist ideal. Barbie was created to show young girls that there were more career options than being a stay-at-home mum. And in the Barbie films her romantic love is never the main plotline, nor is he her saviour.

I’m a bit younger, I’m 16 now and Barbie was my childhood. Yes, regarding race and body type etc it’s problematic but the movies I always watched as a kid inspired me. As a child I went through different phases such as being a so called 'tomboy' for most of primary school but I could always relate to barbie which is probably due to the films and of course I had a doll but only because I loved the movies (and still do). I thought it was just me. a female teacher when I was in p6 took me out of the classroom and asked me if I was aware I was acting very bossy to my group, even tho they nominated me as leader to like take direction, and none of my group cared and where just getting on with the project . I said ‘no I’m not being bossy, I’m doing the same as what Raymond is doing( boy taking charge of the other group)’ And she sort of dismissed what I said saying after ‘yes well, could you tone it down because nobody likes a bossy person’. After that I went back to my table, the people in my group asked why my face was red and I asked them if I was bossy and they said no I was just helping everyone out, and I sat quietly doing my work and cried when I got home. I was also hyper aware of how I behaved in group work after that. I think that’s when I developed a fear of public speaking despite my extroverted personality as well because I had always really liked to explain my work before hand but now it made me feel like what if I’ve got this because I was bossy and will everyone hate if I act self entitled when explaining the work you know. But it wasn’t only me thats comforting but also infuriating

I agree with this so much. As a kid I was shy, but when I went into my teenage years I got more self confidence, and because I am a girl I was told that I was bossy, when instead I just gravitate to leadership positions. I catch myself now apologising for taking leadership roles even if no one else wanted to and I am good at it. Basically all the extroverted, strong, opinionated women I know have been told at some point that they are bossy, a word which I can't remember ever being addressed to a boy in my life

On the other stuff I agree with you in part, there are issues with focus in some instances and the issues are actually addressed to some extent mainly by feminist. In fact in my experience it is rare to see someone who isn't a feminist bring it up outside of arguing that feminism is bad. I don't think feminism hates what makes people feminine or that it aims to devalue the role of the housewife or stay at home mother. In my experience feminism is generally about allowing women to choose what they want to do, without them being a woman impacting on that. If a woman wants to be feminine I would argue feminism is wholly behind that and it seems to me the same is true for being a housewife. It is true that there are certain members of the community who are problematic but more often than not there are countless others who dispute that and truly stand for what feminism purports to be. Of course what is seen is often the bad as it makes for a significantly better story.

My fault I think but nonetheless the point I was trying to build up to was that if someone believes a certain group opinion should be oppressed (misogynists for example) then it falls to anyone who does not believe that to attempt to dispute that in order to prevent it. A way to do this might be using a phrase such as "say it again for the misogynists in the back" for emphasis although in this situation the comment was light hearted and no one was actually trying to make a significant statement about feminism in general but I digress. Essentially I don't believe that shouting something or attempting to put emphasis on something is forcing an opinion on anyone, it is simply attempting to ensure that the opinion is heard and then hopefully that opinion can be changed through reasonable, logical discussion.

If you have the opportunity, there's a series on Netflix called "The Toys That Made Us" that has an episode involving Barbie. It's very eye opening as to why she has had as many careers as she has and how she has developed over the last 60-odd years. I can remember the "We girls can do anything" campaign from the 80s, so the idea of girl powers isn't really a new invention. It has definitely improved over the last 40-odd years as society has developed and changed.

On mental health in schools I'm sad to say it's somehow getting even worse. At least in my school it is they've gone from not telling us anything, to telling us horridly incorrect or even dangerous information and advice. Telling us if we're depressed that we're making it up or just need to exercise and that medications don't fix anything. Telling us that mental illnesses never stem from abuse or biology and that they're always our own weakness. Prior to the quarantine we even had a mandatory lesson where we were told we weren't allowed to grieve loved ones deaths because we would 'infect' the other students with depression. We had weekly mandatory, highly triggering lessons that served only to make people with mental illness the butt of the joke, and to spread misinformation. As someone with a history of suicidal tendencies, seeing them treat such a heavy topic as though our suffering was a joke, it was a nightmare. Had the quarantine not happened I'm scared how far they would have gone with the lessons, and how much misinformation would have been spread by the educators we are supposed to trust to tell us the truth. We were told if we had ever taken any medication for any reason, that we didn't deserve to have anyone around us and were better off dead, as though advil carried the same weight as heroin, as though an addiction completely removed our worth as people. The school system has somehow managed to take mental health too seriously and not seriously enough at the same time.

I love that they’re try and incorporate topics that are so key in society. It seems like they’ve done some research and have made an authentic approach to target gender stereotypes (whilst obviously hoping their sales increase as a side hussle.) The next thing to see which would make those videos even more inclusive is having some more diverse friends of Barbie. Like friends from either different social backgrounds or ethnicities. Then drawing in on those friends and how children as young as 5 can start supporting their peers who are being oppressed. Loving the direction they took with Barbie, really took me by surprise. My personal favourite is the sorry reflex video! It's something I've constantly struggled with because I felt like it was polite but it was just me feeling like I was imposing when I was NOT. Also feeling like I had to feel bad and put myself down when it's so unnecessary. It's actually made me more aware of it and do it less and only use it appropriately :)
