I completely understand what you mean, but I would argue that it would be much more beneficial to everyone if these rules were eliminated rather than spread and further normalised. This way, everyone could simply mind their own business, without worrying about external judgement or pressure. That shouldn't take away from the significance of things usually considered as milestones, such as finding a relationship or having a baby, (you should be able to count on yourself and your friends to celebrate what matters to you, even without society telling you it's important), but it should take away from societal (and thus capitalist) standards which profit off that pressure.

I think it should really be up to you. I think if those milestones weren't there and you could just make your own and everyone could just make their own everyone would be a lot happier. Not everyone want to get married and have children and settle down. In the current society stuff like that is looked down upon (especially for women). So without those milestones, people can stop looking down on each other. I know it's not as easy as I'm making it sound, but it should really be a goal. But yeah, be excited about things you want to be excited by and don't feel ashamed for it.

I actually am asexual, and realised I wasn't attracted to anyone when I was in first year of uni. Now I have been out of uni for a year, that's 4 years knowing this about myself, and I still question if I'm just "waiting for the right person" or "have commitment issues", like society has convinced me there's no way that I could just not want a relationship. Obviously I'm open to my identity changing, but I really have to catch myself when my brain tried to invalidate the way i really feel, because that's just the voices of every film, tv show, etc etc that has told me that sex and love are the end goal. I think I'll be a lot happier living in a nice little studio flat with a cat.

Finding out that asexuality is a real thing and I'm not just incredibly undesirable was a relief. Not to invalidate you at all, but would aromantic feel like a more fitting term? just from reading about your own experiences, and how you feel like you don't experience romantic feelings, it might be something to look into, that could help with figuring out your own identity. I've honestly struggled through the asexuality spectrum myself, and have finally found a term that feels right to me, so I only mean to help you too. (Also, just as a side note, you can be both aromantic and asexual! it's really whatever term you feel represents your own identity and feelings the most

yes yes yes! been struggling a lot with the concept that you "have" to be single to be successful as a female. This is just utterly untrue, but as soon as someone sees, realizes, or assumes you are successful they automatically think you are single as well. At the same time when you are in a relationship and are the more successful person in a heteronormative relationship, you get questions about how does that makes your boyfriend feel that you are successful. And it hit home so hard when she mentioned that there are very different standards for what is deemed successful for men and women... thank you eve for sharing this!

This video made me feel so much better about myself. There is a lot of pressure on young people, both romantically and professionally, and that is very damaging. For me it resulted in focusing on my career, like you, and all that pressure coming from media made me feel really bad about myself for not being that interested in having a romantic relationship. My boyfriend’s grandmother was the first woman to drive a car in her part of the country and she got a job later in life after her 6 kids grew up. She was a lovely mother and grandmother, served her community in various voluntary ways, and had a highly intellectual job. At age ~ 70. In heels yet. Her husband supported her all the way. The idea of independence coexisting with being in a relationship should be obvious and yet it wasn't at all for me. It's definitely something I believe but I've always used the whole 'strong independent woman' thing to describe myself when single or say to friends after a breakup. It's so clear that independence shouldn't be tied to any kind of status, including single. We should always be striving for it or at least have the choice no matter what our love life is like. What you're saying about not having the energy/emotional capacity (or even just the time) to actually think about anything related to romantic and/or sexual relationships throughout uni or even the first years of my professional life, hits right home. I always (and still do) have invested myself 100% into my education/job because i truly love it, and for me the milestones that are important are in this area of my life, getting my first job as a clinical psychologist was and to this day is my greatest achievement, being able to be financially independent, and actually having the means to (in the next couple of years) be a home owner before entering my 30s is what i've always worked for. but unfortunately (We LiVe in A SociETy) societal pressure is making me think the greatest achievement, or like the only way to truly be satisfied, is a stable relationship.

ahhh I SO needed this! While I've had "things" with people in the past it definitely took me until I was about 20/21 as well to really have the emotional capacity to even want a partner. I always wondered the same thing that maybe I just wasn't attracted to people and I often struggled with it- it's so nice to hear it spoken about that others have experienced the same! I definitely 100% relate to the idea that in university you’re independent in a very controlled environment! Even in graduate school, it feels totally different to undergrad because while the structure is still there (in terms of classes, exams, etc.) it’s overall much looser. At least this has been my experience in a biomedical program in the US. It’s almost like having to grow up again and I absolutely feel like I need to “grow a personality,” haha. I’m a trainee lawyer as well and I feel so much what you said regarding becoming independent . Since I left uni I’m just constantly in that « what do I do now » state. I have a job, I guess I have a professional purpose (not even sure tho lol) but I’m lost in what my goals are supposed to be now. AnnaDaA that’s actually a very good point, I think it’s just a bit new for me to have goals that mean working on myself and my personality rather than having a more « professional » or « academic » goal but that’s definitely something to consider! Thank you :)

I think the concept of independence is SO important. I got into my first serious relationship my second year of university and I thought that I had been living a pretty independent lifestyle (and I had been) up to that point. However, in that relationship my partner and I essentially forgot how to be independent. We were together for two years and pretty much morphed our life-styles and schedules to each others to the extent that it got to be extremely unhealthy; spending virtually all of our time (both free time and study time) together. I didn't even realize that I had totally lost sense of myself until the relationship ended. And when it did, I was a mess. I didn't even know how to be me anymore, didn't know how to spend time with myself or make myself happy.....needless to say your emotional intelligence surrounding independence is VERY spot on. You're so right in verbalizing that finding independence with yourself both inside and outside of a relationship is SO important. Definitely a hard pill to swallow for me, but a lesson well learned, and a lesson I will continue to take with me into future relationships and just life in general. Especially since I just graduated university and it's a whole new world haha love you eve, and loved this video!

I hate when people assume that because I’m small and female i must be hunting for someone because ‘nobody is actually content being single’ and that I must hate being alone. To a certain degree this is definitely internalised on my end but I adore how bluntly you’ve validated that ‘you do you’ essentially. Never look for your "other half" to "complete you" , always look for your "another full" who can "double you" ;) I firmly agree with loving yourself first before giving that love to someone else. I am in a steady relationship right now but I would still take myself out for a coffee and read a good book at a café or just visit some places. So you see I can still enjoy my independent life despite being in a relationship and that's exactly what my partner does as well. He has his own life and I have mine but in the end we have each other so you're 💯 right, being independent should not be attached to the relationship status :) You go girl, go out alone and have fun. I started doing that when I was single and I haven't stopped now even though I'm in a long steady relationship ;)
