Everquest for Beginners: Tanks

Everquest progression servers are a great time for old players to come back but they also provide an easier entry into the storied MMO for new players who've never played. With fewer expansions and less content to start, Progression servers in EQ ease the start for the game and that was the idea being these videos.
This is to create beginner guides for lapsed EQ players as well as brand new players to the MMORPG.
For this video, the first in the Everquest Beginner series, we're looking at the 3 tanks and what each of them offers.

I moved to and played on Brell Serilis server when it was opened. I had never experienced before or found since, the amazing community and amazing gameplay anywhere on any other game of any genre. No other server has even come close. Today's manbun neckbeard gamerbois are selfish entitlement whores with no regard, no basic respect, for others by and large. That by the way includes use of language and sexually explicit language and behaviors. There have always been those who cybersex. That's their simping. They need to keep it in tells or go off somewhere on their own and group with the other toon(s) with which they are pitifully carrying on. Problem is they do it in say and group chat when grouping. Voice has ruined gaming. Too many people don't know enough to police themselves.

At 1:41 "....tanks are the Beast likely class to get a rez on a raid...." I always found it to be the cleric, specially on wipes when the cleric had to run back. They needed their equipment to raise their mana pool so they can cast more rezes. So they had to loot their bodies. They also couldn't afford to have the "rez effects" going. I found it interesting, I had my water sprinkler and I almost never got a rez!! My pally almost always got one....

Warrior advice - race is important, instead of kick Ogres get slam, and Ogres are immune to stun in the front. My go to is always going to be Ogre. Just be ready to get stuck a lot in places until you get a Cobalt bracer from Kunark. Aggro management for warriors is horrible in vanilla. Taunt doesn't always work well. To help you want weapons that have a proc. (Dex actually increased proc) In vanilla you want twin short swords of Yakesha. Aggro management becomes much easier. You will never be able to solo as a warrior, especially in vanilla, except that early on. Trolls can solo a bit better because they Regen however the downtime is still worse than other classes. Warrior sound like they get a raw deal compared to the other tanks however by the time Planes of Power comes around no other tank class can tank the bosses like a warrior.

As any big race, aiming to get a DE mask from Lguk should be a priority and they are usually pretty plentiful - That way you also look better, because ogres are ugly :D With the weapon augments you can buy from vendors, warrior tanking on TLPs is not quite as horrible as it was back in the day and i believe there are also tomes for the Bellow line in game? That part i can't say for sure tho, i don't recall for certain if its in on TLPs

most players probably will never be able to solo on a warrior but it is still possible at times. as you mentioned the class is extremely gear dependent and if you've been able to gear up well and bring a bag filled with bandages you can do the occasional solo camp. when I was leveling on P99 as a barbarian warrior I was able to solo camp the hag tower in unrest, ~30-35 in a weekend. and with gear I earned or bought with plat gained on the warrior, none of it broken twink tier like a fungi. but that said, with their heavy gear dependence I would never recommend any first time players to main a warrior in classic.

pallys also get root and blind as well, which are insanely powerful tools for a tank also charm and dispel are real handy for pulling

A paladin saved an entire raid i was ib once. Everyone died but him, and he was able to rez people one at a time inbetween discs and whatnot. It was awesome to watch from above my body.

Make sure to choose a high strength race, whatever tank class you choose. Armor has weight and you wear the heaviest of it. As a human paladin I often found myself at weight capacity, using my Yaulp spell to get home at a decent speed. Strength is super important because being overweight decreases your agility, which in turn reduces both your defense and run speed. Casting a strength buff spell while encumbered - surprisingly - reduces encumbrance effects and can help when tanking encumbered. And, on that note, I feel I should bring up backpacks. Backpacks should be your first purchases in Norrath (the game world's name); bag space lets you hold more loot, which will bring more cash. Don't max out on bags though, because bags have weight, too. As well, slots have sizes - tiny, small, medium, large iirc - and backpacks cannot hold the largest of items, their slots being medium in size. Also, there are special bags out there that weigh 0 no matter their contents and can hold the largest of items. Consider those very valuable. That's end game, later expansion stuff, though. When you're starting, though, just grab 3 or 4 backpacks. When you have a bit of cash flow and can easily afford them, buy 8 (or however many bank slots you have, varies by expansion) toolboxes from your local Tinkering vendor and stick them in the main slots of your bank. Tool boxes have higher weight but can hold larger items, which makes them perfect to turn your 8 bank slots into 64 bank slots. And a final note: equipment priority. Armor gives a bonus when you have all your visible slots filled. That's head, chest, arms, 2x wrist, legs, and feet. Look for those first, though the other slots are also important and you shouldn't pass up any upgrades you find. Every point in every stat and skill counts.

For those that might not start on classic, warriors get really fun around the House of Thule area. You start getting more and more aa's/abilities that help you perform your various roles. Damage mitigation / understanding what discs stacks and which discs do the same thing make it a fun class to learn later on! Also I'll note that warrior damage as a tank is pretty great later on!

Fantastic video, thank you! One thing I want to impress upon people thinking about tanking in regards to positioning: whether you’re raiding or grouping, positioning the target mob shows your team that you are in charge of the situation and confident in what you do! I think that is so important. EverQuest is a team effort and when 6+ minds are all thinking different things, a good tank will take charge and show everyone that you are leading the encounter, and not to get any distracting ideas that can cause a wipe. Great video. On Aradune I play a main raiding warrior and love it. But our SK are masters of agro and huge help parking the boss where I need it before I take over. Sk agro is OP

Just another Shadowknight tip: If you plan on raiding with your SK eventually, be sure you're really stacking your int gear. You get a discipline called Unholy Aura when the Kunark expac drops. This makes your lifetaps do insane damage for a short time. With more intelligence comes more lifetaps. You'll be topping the dps meter easy on those big baddies. Just be sure to FD a few times during the fight. Trakanon hates it when you're melting him. Good luck! and oh yea, great vid as always Flynn.

Pally really shines more then anyone else later on because of all the undead areas, and once you pick up them nasty anti undead autos that deal 50+ percent of their hp they cant be beat on top of the overpowering self sustain. I feel early SK sustain is a bit behind but their damage is higher on anything other then undead and their agro is top notch.

A lot of people underestimate paladins ability to group tank, and yeah they are a little weaker and slower to take off than shadowknights, but the end up being beasts as group tanks once they get some levels and good spells. It especially shines when they have more and more stuns instead of just the 1 at 24 they'd have on a fresh TLP. But it is true that their DPS is pretty low compared to SK's and even warriors, unless you're specifically fighting undead. But the good news on that point is the two most popular dungeons on a new TLP are undead (Unrest and Lower Guk), and then again in Kunark Karnors castle has tons of undead and Sebilis has an undead area as well, though it's mostly live.

Once you get FD for your pet the SK pet becomes one of the greatest tools in the game. Amazing for pulling as you basicly become a two person pull team. But you can also do things like target a mob on the far side of a locked door and send your pet, itll take him a minute but he'll pop through the door and aggro the mob. If the mob summons once the pet dies or fd's that mob will summon you past the locked door. So many tricks can be done with the SK pet, and like I said once you unlock pet fd the fun and games can get nuts.

Warriors get provoke at level 20. It's great for holding and maintaining aggro, especially your main target. Also the range is good on provoke that you can use it almost like you would a bow for pulling. Great ability.

Rangers and druids, nothing but rangers and druids. The perfect raid group consists of 3 druids for dps and some healing plus three rangers for tanking. When one ranger gets killed, second ranger takes over, when second ranger gets killed having that third ranger shines.

In the early game, AC (mitigation) is king; for knights shield AC is the most important source of mitigation (it ignores the soft cap). Your big HP number isn't worth much if you're taking full damage nearly every round. Damage spikes kill.

1:Stamina is essential to max early on. This means a 'twinked out' tank will be higher HP than a self buit one. Up to 30% hitpoints from the worst tank race option to a max tank stamina from level one to max level. 2: Tell your heavy hitting spell casters to wait until the enemy is 50% HP or less to let loose. Once they hit with a 30% damage spell they will take three taunts to take back, and the caster will have to stop anyway to let you take it back. 3: The basher races are already better in stamina, they also can auto hit bash once enemy turns around as (your second taunt). Feel your human~smaller races getting weaker? They will be over-picked by the bigger ones by the guys who have an option to do so. Only friends will know that you maxxed stamina since level 1. EQ for me back in the day was: Starting gear is your DPS and usefulness. You use diagonal movement to outrun all enemies you can get away from based on your regular WASD movement. Bash+running is better(sorry). Warriors always won against the other two tank types in duels the early 2k years because gear was that nasty with perfect 'twinking' since level 1. As far as 40% HP left. Bear in mind harm touch was banned for this.

As an SK I always wished I had Pally Rez and Lay on Hands but having Invis was super helpful...having FD? Gamechanging. I'm the type of player who messes up a lot so having the ability to fix that without dying as huge. Probably why I also liked Bard and Necro!

Paladins get a stun at lvl 28 that does no damage. You can hit mesmerized mobs with stun and It will not break mez. Hit a mezed mob a few times with stun and it will not make a bee line to your cleric, enchanter or bard after mez is broken. This can save you a taunt cooldown. Throwing a no damage stun on a mob attacking a cleric or enchanter will be a great help to have a mez get off or a heal.

Mained paladin till about level 85, idk what expansion that was. I was always jealous of SK's ability to solo current content with ease and the warriors always seeming to take very little damage in raids. But, in group content, if the mobs were stunnable, it was always fun to try and see if i could stun lock the mob the entire encounter. also, the aoe heals were intense. had an AA that would proc AOE heal, my sword would proc AOE heal, and even had a gem that would proc a heal.

Came back to the game on Cazic after a lengthy break. I've played off and on, but just stuck at 90 for the longest time grinding up AAs and I am at a spot where I could grind them decently solo without a merc, but now I want to get to 120, but it's really difficult getting any group at this level. I was thinking of starting on a new progression server, but I play Iksar (and frogloks kind of) and just do not want to play the other races really. So I have a dilema: either start a character I don't really have intention of playing long or wait until Kunark and neither option is one I really want to do. :(

I remember in Kunark when 75 percent of end game Sks and Pals rerolled. They were only brought to raids to soak up loot by the time I left in GoD. Is it still the same and can they actually tank for a group now?

Everyone use to use ogres for tanks, but I use to respect seeing gnome and dark elf warriors. Look cool as hell even if they might not be viable in endgame. Haven’t played the official game in over 20 years and never got to endgame but those are my thoughts.

If you are playing a warrior, get journeyman boots asap. You can use the item from your bags, spamming this buff will produce a truck ton of threat. So much so it actually becomes difficult to pull aggro from a warrior.

​@@lenuvianmaybe it was commonly known, but I had a revelation about SKs when I grouped with my shaman in the plane of disease. This SK used the lowest level fear which no mobs would run from, but almost no mana used and the large agro of the fear spell was still very effective. I never snapped agro from him with the fastest slows. We built a guild together and went thru ssra and Vex Thal into the planes of power.

I'll add my hot take here: Rangers. Rangers are incredibly fun to play if you use them to tank. The got taunt as the "normal" tank classes and more aggro generation than you know what to deal with and a ton of utility with snares, roots, SoW and weapon procs. Sure, they do have lower armor than the plate tanks, but honestly that really isnt a problem when doing the vast majority of group content. Back on Fippy i mained a ranger and build him as a tank, opting for the higher armorclass pieces over various stats that wasnt stamina. He tanked everything from vanilla to Riftseekers in OoW and often offtanked on raids when we were short on other plate tanks. Maybe not a traditional tank, but great at snap aggro as well as one of the best pullers if you know the class.

I thought it'd be more generous to rangers to include them in the video on DPS and didn't want to double dip, but your point is well-made. After all they do get taunt. I'll never forget ranger dps in Luclin though in VT. Best burst dps with their bows it just sadly declined quickly after.

@@Redbeardflynn Oh for sure, rangers with a nice bow are great dps, even during classic on Fippy my ranger was always top 3 on the meters. I believe i had that PoSky quest bow. Its a very versatile class in my book, especially early expansions for their ability to tank, track, dps and just be rangery-good. I wish they had given their archery more love as it went on, but alas, i guess they didnt want them to be unique anymore. Imagine if their epics had been archery focused? Missed opportunity it feels like

Yeah, not seeing this. Been there, done that. Rangers are not tanks in any way, shape or form. They are dps and utility. Simply because they might be able to kind of get it done at times, doesn't make them tanks. My wizard tanked many times and was on pull duty even more often. That didn't make my wizard a tank or a pulling class. A rune and snare does not a tank or puller make, yet I did on some fashion. Still, a wizard is not a tank or a best case scenario pulling class. Neither is a ranger. Why people can't bear to think their toon has limitation is beyond me. Everyone wants to pretend they are Superman. My ranger tanked in Chardok, Seb and other places many times. The toon ran the cleric out of mana constantly, even with a "tanking" set. Mobs had to die faster, which ran other party member OOM faster for having to do more and faster damage. This in turn caused aggro ping-pongs, the bane of grouping. Wipes or the risk of are/were more frequent with my or other rangers tanking for this reason. They don't have the basis of what it takes to be a tank and no one should disillusion themselves with the idea. Ranger disciplines later on make them great for momentary off-tanking and special circumstances. Ssraeshza Temple, the emperor, is a perfect example of this. "A Ranger_01 deftly twirls his/her weapon(s)" I know, I was doing it wrong. Yeah. Okay.

And ironically enough, this is the class that often misses out on the experience returning resurrections, not the warrior (in my extensive experience) for not having to time to sit through resurrection effects. Rather they had to start healing and buffing quickly or immediately.

This is why I always suggest starting on a progression server early if possible because you kind of grow into it. Otherwise, if you join up with a guild there's often people that will help get you geared, especially guilds that need a raid tank. Raid tanks tend to get priority for gear in most scenarios just because it's so essential but not every guild will operate this way.

Plan ahead. try to work into your early level route places that will drop gear for you. for example unrest can be huge just for you're AC with the bronze armor drops. main thing though is you're weapons, especially if you're rolling a warrior. ask around or look into what weapons are best to get and either try to get into those camps or do some plat farming so you can buy them. in classic your best friend is the p99 wiki; i've spent hours on there looking into gear and quests.

"Tanks are least likely to get experience rez on a raid." Not ever, not once, in all my years of playing EQ, with regard to raids/raiding, have I ever seen a tank not get an experience returning resurrection. I have chosen to take non-experience returning resurrections a few times for the convenience of being returned to my character corpse outside raiding circumstances. The very make up of a raid group requires multiple clerics to be present. If they are using lower level, therefore lower mana rez spells, they are doing it wrong. Once Kunark hits and the rez clicky becomes a thing, it is inexcusable for a tank to not get an experience returning resurrection. Kunark by the way is only the second expansion of EQ, so very early in the EQ timeline. If you are not getting a experience returning resurrections, get a new guild/raid/raid group that does it right. I have seen many a cleric not be able to resurrection their corpse due to not being able to sit and wait for resurrection effects to wear off. Meaning they had to get back to corpse, retrieve their gear, start healing right away and buffing as mana permits. Yes, clerics. The very bringers of experience returning resurrections themselves, countless occurrences of their not getting the benefit of their own resurrection, even with the clicky.

I think for us the no or low exp rez's started around NTov, especially Vyemm who chewed through tanks incredibly fast. That's also when Paladins would die just to get back LoH.

Usually the Main Clerics will Rez other Clerics 1st to help with the Rezzing . Then Mts , Then Chanters , Wizards ,Hrbribs , Then Sham, Mags and Drood are always last. But if your Raid leader is a Drood they will come after the Mts

@@roboparks, The way it should be. Clerics resurrect other clerics,. then necromancers, enchanters, other casters and then melee. Get the mana regenerated and casters back in action first. Melee don't need to regenerate mana. Even hybrids mana pool is a second thought to casters.

New players play shadow knights or paladins,you will have a lot more fun,warriors are not so fun for a new player,and playing a paladin or shadowknight will help you learn more about the game as you play, I say this who has played on both shadow knight and warrior and raided on both. and in some situations beastlords can tank for group content (if geared enough) and they have spells to hold agro. (especially if they are an ogre)

Yes! You do have your lay on hands skill, too. That's found under the "Alternate Advancement" tab, it can be a little confusing to find it. That overwhelmed feeling is totally normal! Especially with the UI. Soloing is going to be tough and keep getting tougher so if you can get groups that's probably best. /ooc will help you find a group in your zone. I've got a character there, Treebeardflynn, feel free to send me a tell with any questions you have!

@@lifewater It doesn't work different in general. That's not saying some raids don't do this. I wouldn't tank for them. Respect the tank or get another loser who will simp for you. In all my years, it's not my experience that tanks don't get experience returning resurrections, on any server, any raid, any guild, any place (meaning P1999 versus live retail) and that includes TLP servers. Only weak-kneed raids would demand their tanks die and eat it.

SK is the most fun tank to play. But if only we knew about horrendous 40% XP penalties they had back in day, where a necro, only had 10% XP penalty and could solo like 80% of game content on his own.

Come on flynn, you did SKs dirty. Less group utility? SKs can heal their groups and return mana to their casters, remember? They can also buff the ATK and AC of their melee. They can also debuff the resistances of enemies, to help casters land spells better and add those resists to the party (Aura of Darkness). And these things stack with the persistent buffs of the other classes (ENC, BRD, SHM, DRU, CLR) and occur *_in combat_*, where it's most needed. It's as if you think healing is the only 'group utility'. Only Bards have more group utility than SKs. Note: I've played to at least 99 on all three (dinged 100 upon logging in LS launch day on a PAL and SK) and raided, in era, with all three as well. I love Paladins for concept reasons (CoH players will understand that term) but WAR is the best raid tank and SK is the best group tank. They're all VERY gear dependent but a naked PAL/SK still has access to helpful spells. My advice is, if you don't plan to raid seriously, go with an SK as their damage output will be far more useful in today's game than the Paladin's heals and fixed duration buffs. Also, consider the fact that only one class was deemed superfluous enough to get an ability that causes you to (END YOURSELF) for the benefit of another. Look up Act of Valor.

@@Redbeardflynn Honestly, that's the case for most classes. Clerics get complete heal at 39 and have no reason to use it until the late 50s (and even that's pushing it). Aura of Darkness is indeed 61 (so PoP) but everyone sucks pre-60 (roughly). Defensive isn't until 55, endless quiver isn't until 59, leechcurse isn't until 60, Malo is at 60, and so on. The video was informative though. I was just offended (❄) by one of my favorite classes being besmirched. 😝

The biggest issue with a monk tank is aggro. You're relying purely on damage to be your aggro generation. When we were messing around sometimes on raids we'd let the monk try to tank raid mobs by building up aggro solo first. Granted the monk was insanely geared. They did well-ish, but still nothing like the tanks.

I'm sure you've learned this by now, but split pulling means pulling mobs that are close together and using abilities like feign death to "split" a single mob out of the group to bring back to your group. It can also be like having 2 mobs close together, and rooting/snaring/mezzing one while the other is brought back to the group to kill. Essentially just separating multiple enemies into more manageable chunks.

As an EverQuest player from 2001 until 2012 I played a warrior the entire time, did it all. Played for 6+ hours a day on work days, 10+ hours on weekends, for years, was part of top tier raiding guilds on Druzzil Ro, and Povar. To say I was addicted is an understatement, the game is intended for people to spend 5+ hours a day, every day playing. Trust me, I did. My tip or suggestion to anyone just starting out or thinking about it. Don't even start. I wasted a decade of my life with nothing to show while I burred my life into a game.

Paladins really come into their own later with group heals, rez, and slay undead. But they do struggle early on imo. I can't remember a raid where an sk was preferred over a warrior after defensive for the actually raid npcs but sks were always used to generate aggro. About the worst reply I have ever seen about EQ. Haha. Paladins have the best snap aggro in the game with Flash of Light. They can actually hold aggro with multiple rogue DPS even if the Paladin is 10 levels lower. This also works extremely well in multi mob pulls to snap aggro from the enchanters then let the Warrior taunt/proc aggro from the Paladin. Very few raid level mobs will have requested SK as main tank when a Warrior with Defensive will mitigate 3x the damage as a SK. A few dragons in HoT we will use an SK but not very often.

if you want to raid, warrior, if you want to just run 5 mans sk or paladin. never ever ever will you be main tank as a paladin or a sk in a guild unless they are way over powered.
