It's allowed to escape but you are not allowed to hurt anybody or to damage the prison when you escape. ^^ And also in Germany when somebody has to be in prison for example for 3 years it is possible that he can get out already after 2 years. But if you try to escape you will have to sit in prison for the whole 3 years. ;) Also of course they will try to catch somebody, who escaped, again.

The Canada section was nice. Too short and a fun fact you’ve never mentioned (as far as I can tell) is that Canada is home to the longest street on earth. Yonge Street starts at the edge of Lake Ontario in downtown Toronto and runs north until it ends at the Manitoba border. Or it starts at he Manitoba border and ends at the edge of Lake Ontario, I guess. Either way, it’s a hell of a long street.

It actually recently happened again (as in a few weeks ago) between Belgium and The Netherlands. A part of the border was defined to follow the Maes river back in the day. To make make navigation easier for large ships, some parts of the river were straightened out. This meant that some parts of the Netherlands were on the Belgian side of the border and some parts of Belgium were on the Dutch side. So they decided to trade those tiny chunks of lands. Nobody actually lived in those parts, but having to cross borders made law enforcement extremely hard. Drug smugglers and other criminals used those places for their transaction because police can't actually chase across borders without special permission. This seemingly trivial exchange solved that problem. There's always an interesting story behind those unusual decisions ;)

+Niosus - It's absolutely true that the Netherlands and Belgium recently swapped some riverine islands, but you're not right in saying police would need special permission to operate across borders in the two countries concerned. As part of the Benelux treaties, police officers from Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands all have full recognition in each other's countries, and while it is true that they are normally required to inform the other country's police force if they apprehend somebody across the border, they don't need permission to do so.
