There are lots of natural training opportunities in your puppy training schedule. Some of these puppy training skills are a little more important than others, and they can set you up to avoid training challenges down the road. Resource guarding is something that has come up a lot lately with new puppy owners. If you're currently having trouble with resource guarding (whether it's food or a toy) we urge you to find a professional dog trainer to help you with your training challenge.
There are some really simple ways that you can teach your puppy some food bowl manners that will really go a long way in teaching them that they need to show some self-restraint. And that the food comes from YOU, instead of magically appearing in their food bowl. Add these training opportunities to your puppy training schedule so you can take advantage of your puppy's attention and focus!

G’ day from Australia! Love your channel and that is why I am reaching you for help. We just got our little Lab puppy from the breeder; he has been very quiet but he is starting to participate more in the family games. We have two kids and they are obviously running around all day, puppy wants to engage but jumps and try to bite (we understand that it is his way of playing) so how we can redirect this way I want him to be part of the family but don’t know how to “control” the roughness Thank you very much Juan

Do you have any tips on how to do this if your puppy is on a raw food diet? There is no kibble to easily hold.
Жыл бұрын
I have a 10 weeks old poodle puppy and the self-control thing works so good with her. She is a highly-food motivated dog, she is always looking for food haha when she was little, I needed to make her kibbles more like a soup, with warm water, and she will start jumping on me when I was doing the soup-like food. I would give her one kibble everytime she stops jumping and sits/lie down and she catched that really quickly. Now she eats solid food and we still do the same, sometimes she even goes to her bed and wait

I know this is too old to help with puppy years but I planted some grassy ground cover in a med/small plastic bin. I drilled draining holes and filled the bottom with mulch, then dirt and then the "grass". I keep it on the balcony when I'm home and put it in front of the toilet when I go out for doggo to use.

@McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Kelly! When you put your pup’s food down, give them just a few minutes with it and then take it up. Even if they haven’t quite finished but they’ve become disinterested. Repeat this over the. Next couple of meals and you’ll likely see your pup start to focus on the food when you put it down. If the problem persists, you should look into other reasons for your dog not being interested in their food. Thanks for watching ~Ken

I viewed your videos to get him used to it and he’ll go in crate but when he wakes up and doesn’t see me he cries. Hey there, So first of all I’m sorry for my English but I hope you’ll understand me We just got our puppy 6 days ago and she’s only 36 days old (Cocker Spaniel). The breeder brought her to the vet and just left her there without saying anything, so we had to take her (Btw the vet and breeder are friends and the vet tried to convince him to let the puppy stay 30 more days but he refused) I really don’t understand how cruel people can be. Anyways, since we didn’t expect such a young puppy I feel so clueless right now. Our puppy has her crate and a training pad too (The vet told us that we can’t take her outside because she’s so young.) She pees on the pad first and then we let her out to play with us on the carpet but still pees on there too. Since she is already used to peeing on the carpet do you think it will be hard to potty train her later? I’ve read that treats can only be given to puppies when they’re 2 months old so i really don’t know how to train her right now. What do you say? Is it okay to give her treats or is she too young? And do you have any tips for me on how i can raise her the best and healthiest way? I really don’t trust the people and the vet here where i live.. I’m gonna watch many of your videos to learn more

Hi there, BList! Great question! It depends entirely on your dog (and your genuine enthusiasm). If your praise is gruff and in a deep voice, that will work too. I’ve had the amazing opportunity to personally work with thousands of dog owners. I can tell you that the owners who are genuinely pleased with their dog will have a more genuine vocal response. Regardless of the pitch of that response, those dogs are more engaged! So you won’t need to worry about having a squeaky “yaasss” to be successful with your pup😉 Happy Training! ~Ken

What do you do if your 8.5 month old puppy (60 pound Aussiedoodle/Labradoodle) refuses to eat her dry dog food. We’ve tried 4 different kind including Beneful Adult, Purina Puppy Chow, Pedigree Puppy Food and Crave. We’ve wet it, put cut up bits of chicken in it, added several treats into it, put chicken broth and beef broth on it and hand feeding her. She’s been eating the Purina Puppy Food since she was 6 weeks old and now she smells it and walks off.

QUESTION??? I might acquire another dog. I've never had two dogs at once and look forward to it. I dont know exactly what the age or breed will be but it will probably be another pitbull, a rott or German shepherd. FACT: The dog i currently have is a 1 year old female American Pitbull Terrier...she is easy and kind hearted. If I want to set the family up for success...how do I foster a good home atmosphere from day one and between the two dogs? Who do I feed first? Who do I play with first? What do I do if the other pup disagrees with the order? Basically I'm not concerned about my female being unkind, she's very trustworthy...im concerned about somehow creating a competition. What can I do from day one to ensure the puppy or adult dog succeeds in his or her new home and never feels like competing with my current girl? :) She's not fixed either but she's been super easy even when in full heat its been a non issue. I'd like to keep my dogs unmodified.

Hi there! Not sure if you got any sort of advice from anyone yet or if it is too late, and I'm by no means a professional, but I've done my fair share of research on dogs as I'll be getting a puppy soon-ish. The key is to slowly introduce them to each other and then help them to establish hierarchy. To introduce them slowly, start by putting your girl up in a specific room of the house or crate if she has one, and give the new puppy time to explore the rooms without letting them see each other. This will allow the new puppy to receive the scent of your current dog. And I mean giving the puppy TIME to sniff around (not potty, but to get the scent) like 5-10 minutes PER ROOM. Once that is done, switch it around by keeping the new puppy out of sight and allowing the established dog to go around and sniff the new puppy's scent. Probably doesn't need as much time as the puppy, but still go through every room. If there is little to no reaction, then the chances of them getting along or at least tolerating each other is likely. If they're already growling at each other just by scent.. you may want to rethink things unfortunately. It wouldn't be impossible to get them used to each other, but you'd have to watch them LIKE A HAWK for real to make sure there is never a chance for a fight or injury to occur. And I'm not saying either dog would be or is vicious, it's just how it is for all dogs. Either way, introduce them slowly. After they got each other's scent, introduce them the way you'd do with a stranger's dog. Have them BOTH on leash and give them a chance to say "hello" by sniffing and whatnot. Watch them closely and look for any signs of either dog becoming assertive or anything like that. But remain calm. The dogs will pick up on everyone's signals so if you're stressed, they will be, too. If things go well then either they'll be playing together OR they'll ignore each other, both is considered a success. As for the hierarchy.... basically, dogs see the house as the "den" and in the "den" there should be the "Alpha" which would be you and anyone else you put in charge of the dog(s). The dog would then be a "Beta" just like in a pack. When a new dog enters the picture, there can be confusion as to who is in charge of the other. This causes both dogs stress and could end up in unfavorable behaviors if just left alone. Within the dogs of a home, there is an "Alpha dog" ... so there's the "Alpha" (you), "Alpha dog" and "Beta(s)" ... It is your job as the leader to establish who will be the Alpha dog. And there is NOTHING wrong with being a beta or alpha, so don't think of it as choosing one over the other, because of course you'd love them equally. It just helps relieve stress and keeps good behavior to establish the hierarchy. NORMALLY the "Alpha dog" is the older dog. If they're the same age but different genders, then it'd be the male dog. Or if they're the same age and the same gender, then it'd be the more outgoing of the two. So just follow those guidelines. Now, HOW do you establish the hierarchy? In simple everyday things. Always feed the Alpha dog first, always let the Alpha dog follow you out of the door first, basically always do everything with the Alpha dog first. And make it CLEAR to the other dog that the dog you've chosen IS the Alpha dog by making sure you're the leader, one, and two, making sure the beta sees everything that happens with the Alpha dog going first. It's really quite simple. If these tips do not work, then I'd seek the help of a professional. Also, as for the intact dog situation. That is 100% your choice as there are pros and cons to both intact and spayed/neutered dogs. However, if you were to get a male dog and neither one of your dogs are fixed, this could end up in unwanted breeding. It doesn't take much for the male dog to possibly impregnate a female dog. If you let them out of your sight at any point while the female is in heat, then it could already be too late. So play it safe, be on your guard, and use your best judgment. Again, I'm not a professional. Just doing tons of research (beyond just watching these videos). I look at many websites, many articles, many answers, many papers, etc., all on raising dogs, even stuff on breeding even though I have no intention of ever becoming a breeder. If these things do not work, seek the help of a professional. Or, if you don't trust the advice from a random KZbin commenter (lol I wouldn't blame you) then seek the help of a professional. I hope this helped you! :) Good luck.

He lets anyone hold him, touch him all over, brush him, work the hands around his collar and pet him. I’ve spent time over and over on the floor with toys trying to motivate him to play. He only wants to play with other dogs. Could you make a video about the shy reluctance puppy? Treats and food don’t seem to motivate him at all. He is about 13 weeks. He has had no accidents.
