Hi A summary: 8 week - feeding by hand and putting a bit on his bowl so he learns that you give food - learn his name, when feeding is name then reward (food) - yes word, say yes and then reward. - Crate training - Potty training: after food, after a nap, after playing - Extra: teach follow food in your hand. 9 weeks - Supervision is key, they puppy is more comfortable, so you need to reach them to behave. - Same as week 8, reinforcement there. - Follow food to do a circle, make the puppy work, if they work they receive a reward. - Extra: hold the collar and reward. 10- 16 weeks - 1st week. sit, down and stand commands can be teached, better to pick just one: sit. Then way of doing is Command > stimulus > reward. So you said the command, do the movement for them to sit and then reward. - 2nd week: 1. continue with same command but now with the same gesture but without the reward. The reward comes after, this is to teach that not always need a reward. 2. Start bond, like touching them paws, ears, nails...and rewarding if they behave. - Continue teaching through those weeks other commands, 1 command per 1 or 2 weeks. - Important to learn “come” commands with their name. Use a leash to make him come with food & follow your hand with food. Increase challenge with distractions.

“Yes!” has so much value at our house that when the Bears score and we yell “YES!!” All our dogs come running for a reward! LOL
@McCannDogs5 жыл бұрын
It’s such a great way to mark that moment, so you can still reward with good timing, Jill! Over time, your pups will learn that inflection of the “yes” matters. And it won’t create chaos when the Bears kick a clutch field goal..😁 Maybe that adds to the excitement? Happy Training ~Ken
@jilljohnson28155 жыл бұрын
McCann Dog Training We have to work on the inflection for sure, because we are just as excited for that field goal as we are when our pups do what we ask them. I love how her little baby yoda ears perk up the second you say yes while training without the food. It really is a place keeper she knows means food is coming. I’m using all of your techniques with my 10 week old GSP I’ve had her for only 3 whole days and she’s already heeling, leaving my cats alone, sitting, lying down, turning left and right, sleeping all night in her crate without complaining. She’s a dream dog, I hope I can continue to do this amazing intelligent beauty justice because I work in an animal shelter (where I’ve adopted her from) and it’s heartbreaking to see the potential all the dogs would have but they haven’t had those foundations of good manners and exposure to socialisation opportunities when they were younger.

I'll have a lot of work in my hands and i've been binge watching videos and reading a bunch to be ready for him. The people who are taking care of him told me he almost died when someone left him and his 4 siblings in a box out in the wilderness alone and they found them starving and sick. Now out of all of them he is the smallest and the shyest so i imediately wanted to get that dogo out of the bunch and give him the love he needs. Hopefully i'll be a good owner ( meaning i wont spoil him too much xD).

This is the most thorough explanation I've heard for bringing a new puppy home. Well done sir
@AT-zb3mj4 жыл бұрын
This video is gold. Honestly. I've been saying for years that KZbin is the best educational resource that has ever existed. Ken, this video ought to be compulsory viewing for the vast majority of dog owners. I've always had German Shepherds and they've all been fantastic (always reward-based training) - although the last one, from a more 'working' background (I wanted a challenge for Schutzhund) was a little too challenging with crate training at night! After an 8 year gap (children) the time is right and we've a beautiful Border Collie, 8 1/2 weeks old. I found you by searching specifically for Border Collie 'tips' - understanding just how 'interesting' this breed is in particular. I've learned a lot of new methods from your video here and I'd encourage people to be aware of the subtle point when watching it that its us that needs to modify our behaviour to get the most out of value training. So many problems are unwittingly caused by the owners. Our little one is doing a little too well perhaps. It's almost concerning. She's quickly gained confidence and has slept every night without so much of a whimper. Last night (day 6) she slept 2300-0630 and I do love to wake her by getting myself ready rather than wait for her to wake. Jan Fennell's famous methods of ignoring the dog until you're ready are a great help in keeping them calm in these respects. Question: when a dog's doing exceptionally well - do you push on a little ahead with the training or try to keep it steady and allow it to develop naturally as she grows mentally, concentrating instead on reinforcing what they do well? Now to train the kids....!

We adopted our puppy from a shelter yesterday and they don't know how old he is, but we're treating "8 weeks old" like "Week 1" and carrying on from there. So far he's very comfortable with his crate! That is our #1 success so far! No whining, crying, pacing or anything- he sleeps very soundly. He's pretty good getting handles but tries to be mouthy- fortunately he loves his bone and we can always give that to him to distract those teeth. Potty training is pretty good too. I think our weakest area is "YES!" and his name. He doesn't quite know what those mean yet. Thank you so so much for all of your videos! I've been binge-watching them for 2 months now in preparation for this little fella.

Thank you, this is excellent advice. So many people (trainers included) forget the importance of meal time. Once I've completed hand feeding and basic obedience, I like to scatter some kibble across the floor, first one way then the other. This makes meals a game to gain a bit of coordination in hunting and, pointing to missed kibbles, seems to train human hand signals as important. Dogs love the game and it slows food intake.

I’m getting my first puppy!! My first pet, my first American Staffordshire Terrier! I’m beyond excited! I’m getting my sweet girl on the 13th of June! I’m watching all sorts of videos and taking notes about puppies and what’s it like to be an owner of a dog! Please if you have any tips about anything that deals with dogs it can be food, exercise, necessities, training, basic knowledge, etc I will more than willing to take you into consideration! 💛

Could you please do a video outlining an example of a whole day. Such as wake up,take them outside to go potty, then [xyz] We are really stuck on what to do when our puppy is really hyped up in the morning but too young to go for a walk. Yet our family has to get ready for the day, eat breakfast etc so don’t have every moment of the day to follow the puppy and train it.
@sarahb28745 жыл бұрын
Shanna Hay I’m in the same situation. What’s been working for us is to take puppy outside to potty for about 10 mins and then he has breakfast. I have a leash on him and bring him wherever I am in the morning to get ready. This seems to calm him down a lot because he’s near us the whole time. Waking up earlier and playing with your pup after breakfast to tire home out while you are getting ready is really helpful too.

I wish I knew this earlier, my puppy is 4 months old and is super hyper and active, I got her when she was 3 months. Training her has been a big task, especially since she is accustomed to a few things. She also nibbles and bites a lot which is not good at all since 6/10 times she can bite a bit too hard. Hope I can train her to be calm and obey commands soon, but it's starting to feel hopeless.

Is she better now?? I'm in the same situation we rescued our puppy at 3 months and he's 4 months now! We have an issue with the biting too

Anyone can handle/touch/lift/squeeze my dog 100% without him even reacting. He's used to being handled, since I've been training/subjecting him to it since he was 8 weeks old. I have also taught him the command "still", and when I say "still" he sits/lies/stands absolutely still until I say "yes"!

I completely froze up and succumbed to not being able to balance work and life, now my puppy is 17 weeks old and growing more unruly by the day. I really hope I can intervene now and improve my ways while I still can

How is it going? Hope you’re doing ok

You have time need to intervene now though or you will have serious problems.

Honestly if you truly can’t handle then just sell him or give him away. Don’t risk your own health at any cost, just make you’re ok

I adopted a 4 month old and Im trying my best to learn how to train him and have him be happy. I recently learned that the ppl that gave me my puppy kept him outside and he wasnt really a house puppy.

Great video! Will you be doing one for older puppies? Our 6 month old bull terrier doing quite well at home but distractions are tough and recall is really tough with their very inquisitive brains.

Okay, so I've read and watched so much on puppy training and thought I was pretty much there. SO many things you mentioned other people haven't, such great little tips people would just forget! The constant name use in a positive way is something I never even thought about, instead would've been using the name to tell him off instead. Time to watch ALL your videos now. Thank you so so much for helping train owners better 😂🎉

So helpful . My dog is going to be 12 weeks old, Should I just start at the 8 week point and move from there? I am thinking that you shouldn't skip the acculturation stage.

@@lanevea oh that’s unfortunate. It is A LOT of work so I can’t blame you but I’m holding out for as long as I can too. Hopefully by 6-7 months he calms down a bit and isn’t as crazy. What breed was your dog if you don’t mind me asking?

Our German shepherd came to us at 8 months old. The breeder had sudden health issues and he was not able to do any training with him. 😅 in a small house with 3 cats, an adult mastador,14 people, myself, my husband and my 17 year old daughter being the only ones who can responsibly handle him, on 8 acres... Things have been intense. Without a doubt the smartest dog I've ever known. So many things to teach him. Thanks for your videos. I want to just teach Buddy to look at (give full attention) to the person who said it. Having more than one dog means I will need one to do something different than the other at times. Would I just start with saying name, (he looks) yes, reward? Then what would the increments be afterwards 🤔
