The reason people go back to 7 sometimes is because the gliding and underwater driving actually felt different from regular ground movement (as opposed to 8's gliding being rail-roaded to a set direction / dropping you like a ton of bricks, and 8's underwater driving feeling nearly identical to normal driving if you're not playing on Dolphin Shoals). You can basically go anywhere you want with 7's gliders, and the underwater driving feels like you're driving with super low gravity.

I legit don’t understand the hate on Neo Bowser City. It’s the only futuristic, cyberpunk-style track the series has ever had. The music is a bop. The corners are really well laid out and fun to drift. It’s one of only two tracks to have ever been in heavy rain. I think it’s really cool.

As a person living in the UK, melody motorway sounds so much better than music park. Also it still makes sense because you make the trick jumps by keeping in time with the MELODY. It’s actually really interesting that 7 is considered forgettable, it’s my most played MK and the courses are probably my favorites in the series. Like, my goodness! Rainbow Road, DK Jungle, Piranha Pipeway, Wuhu Island, Koopa Cape, Neo Bowser City, Coconut Mall, *Music Park?* It even has Maple Treeway!

Neo Bowser City is an underrated gem The atmosphere (especially in 8) is so good and the track design is excellent. Slippery tracks can go one or two ways; either feeling fair and fun to master or just being excruciating Luckily, NBC is fair and fun, and combined with the excellent music and atmosphere it’s great (this is why I also love sherbet land in mk8 for similar reasons)

On the music of Warios Shipyard at 24:00, it actually incorporates a few references to Wario land, like the bass in the background sounding a lot like Wario boss theme in Mario Land 2, and some other references to Wario Land 1’s main theme. It also has Wario wearing his bull hat from that game on one of the signs and the whole theme of pirate ships is fitting because Wario’s had multiple encounters with them in the Wario Land games. I guess it’s kind of like a metaphor for how the franchise is dead in the water.

3DS Rainbow Road is literally my favorite course of all time. It feels more like the end of a journey than a race track, and the music is one of the only songs I have ever listened to that makes me cry. Back in the 64 era, when I was just a wee lad, I used to entertain myself by dreaming up and doodling my own Mario Kart tracks. Things like linear 3-part courses, underwater sections, and courses composed of musical instruments like piano keys, xylophones, and drums you could bounce off. Seeing these ideas come to life in future MK was such a jaw dropping shock to me, and one that left me slightly annoyed but mostly amazed, excited, and encouraged. Just maybe I’m cut out to help design video games one day. Anyway loved the review as always!

I think something that should be mentioned is the first person mode in this game. For me, as a kid, playing Rock Rock Mountain, going first person up the mountain avoiding the boulders was always thrilling and I loved the course for that. Plus, with airship fortress, the 3d effect absolutely adds to the bullet bills, pairing that with the first person is brilliant

Mario Kart 7 is arguably the entry in the MK franchise that I have the most nostalgia for, and it's heartening to see these rankings do the stellar slate of tracks it offers justice (personally, I believe Neo Bowser City, Daisy Hills, and Maka Wuhu are far more exemplary tracks than you assessed them as, but Mario Kart perspectives are nothing if not subjective!) though MK7 is justifiably more commended for its marvelous array of retro course selections, it's wonderful to see you recognize innovative, splendid nitro tracks like Music Park, Wario Shipyard, and--the peerless champion of them all--3DS Rainbow Road. excellent rankings overall, and I loved the video!

Mario Kart 7 was incredible. The power of the 3DS at the time as a portable was shocking and this was one its best looking games. Definitely the first modern Mario Kart on a handheld that felt that it wasn't that much behind the console ones.

The only reason why the mario kart rankings work is that there is many tracks per game so there will be a lot to talk about. It will be farely boring if it was just 4 or 5 boards per episode. Not much suspense on which one is the best or worst Maybe doing eras might be better like the n64 Era, the gamecube Era, ect but definitely not by game

Am I the only one who loved racing in first person in this game? Seriously this was incredible! You also had motion controls to steer the car, I loved it so much and they took it out in 8. It would have worked really well with the wiiu gamepad and the switch's screen.

You say nobody is bending over backwards to gush about wario shipyard and yet here I am. This course is perfect, easily the best underwater track in the series as it fits the theme of a shipwrecked boat so well. The glider section is so fun with the anchor being an obstacle which makes the section more dynamic. The track itself is so layered with so many fun twists and turns like genuinely it's my favourite 7 nitro and a top 3 track of all time for me and I was so sad it's not in the booster course pass as of yet

Neo Bowser City (or Koopa City as I know it) and 3DS Bowser's Castle are honestly some of my favorite tracks, with 3DS Bowser's Bastle being my favorite Bowser's Castle track. Neo Bowser City is just extremely fun to drive around since the rain messes with your traction (unless your off-road stat is high enough) which means you need to know where and when you start and end your drifts, along with the two spots that are unaffected since you're driving somewhere the rain can't get to (it's technically three spots, but the last rain-free section is extremely brief) as well as the puddles, making this an upgraded, more complex Luigi Circuit (GBA). GBA Bowser's Castle puts you in what's essentially an exam in just how well you know how normal racing, underwater racing, and gliding work since you'll be doing all three of them, and the underwater section here is actually fairly substantive compared to 3DS Rainbow Road (and especially because the top speed in regards to lightweight vs. heavyweight class is essentially reversed in Mario Kart 7 compared to Mario Kart 8 which follows the standard "lightweights are slower, heavyweights are faster" dynamic). By contrast, I'd also rank N64 Luigi Circuit above Toad Circuit, Cheep Cheep Lagoon, Daisy Hills, DK Pass, and GBA Bowser's Castle 1 since it is one of only two tracks that's essentially without both underwater racing and gliding, pretty much just pure traditional racing goodness (The only other one would be SNES Rainbow Road; funny that both ends of the MK7 Retro GP calls for pure traditional racing actually). When tracks like Toad Circuit is "mostly" old-school racing + a gliding section for variety, it ironically just stands out less to me, and it's kind of a similiar story with Daisy Hills, DK Pass, and Bowser's Castle 1 (allthough the last one I do think is the best of those three). (As for Cheep Cheep Lagoon, Wario's Galleon/Wario Shipyard is just the better underwater course all around, and Rosalina's Ice World actually has the incredibly rare combo of having normal + underwater racing, but no gliding, which I feel makes it a bit more underwater-focused than Cheep Cheep Lagoon itself, even if that one is the Special Cup course that I'd rank the lowest.) In general though, I agree with your assessment that the MK7 courses, both Nitro and Retro, is actually really good on it's own. In terms of overall course quality, I'd easily rank it the highest, even above 8 and 8 Deluxe (and that is both with and without the Battle Pass).

24:01 Ironically, Wario's Shipyward theme uses snippets from Wario Land's theme song at the start, making it technically the most recognizable Wario track music wise. 28:28 DK Jungle and Music Park also didn't returned in Tour but they were already retros thanks to MK8; my main assumption on the Wii Sports track not returning might be because Tour has just avoided any crossover content whatsoever (Miis by themselves don't really count)
