In Pokemon, some moves are only known by a handful of Pokemon. Some fans started calling these signature moves, but the term is a little bit fuzzy. So lets go through some examples and define what a 'signature move' really is... or could be.

I think some moves like Darkest Lariat and Aura Sphere fit into the “defines a Pokemon” category for Incineroar and Lucario

That may be true, they're not signature moves anymore. And besides, Aura Sphere was already Known by the Sinnoh Legends as well as Lucario once Diamond and Pearl were released.

I’d argue that the precise definition of “signature move” would change depending on if you’re talking about the move or the pokemon. For example: “Harden is the signature move of Metapod” = Incorrect, as multiple unrelated Pokemon can learn Harden. “Metapod’s signature move is Harden” = correct, since Metapod is known widely for using the move Harden, and is in most cases the only move it is capable of knowing. Mostly this just applies to Pokemon who can only learn one specific move (or very few, one of which it is known for). Pokemon like the cocoons, Magikarp, Smeargle, Ditto, and Unown.

meh, when i hear about the move "Harden" I immediately think of Metapod. So it IS also Metapod's signature move. The key here is that NOT ALL POKEMON have a signature move. Harden IS Metapod's signature move. It's a move linked to a pokemon even if others can learn it, by way of general knowledge in the world.

Darkest lariat is no longer a signature move to incineroar BUT in sword and shield, it gets the privilege of having its own unique animation compared to the others who can learn it.

I feel like the definition of a “signature move” doesn’t need to be super rigid. If a Pokémon has a strong association with a move is a strong enough case for me. Like clefable being able to learn meteor mash alongside metagross in Gen 3 does not mean I don’t think of meteor mash as metagross’ signature move.

I've always defined a signature move as a move that strongly fits the intended personality/gimmick of a Pokémon when it was designed. For example, Octazooka will ALWAYS be the signature move of octillery, no matter what other Pokémon get it in the future. Pokemon evolution line exclusivity is purely a common correlation to that end, but not absolute.

I think the best example of a "Signature move" is probably King's Shield on Aegislash. The move is a core mechanic of that Pokemons design and gimmick.

I just want to point out some funny instances of signature moves, specifically in gen 8. Arm thrust is now the signature move of Pancham and Pangoro, and confide, a move that was a TM learned by most pokemon in gen 7, is now only learned by the Impidimp line (which also gains a new signature move every time it evolves). Also in gen 8 before the release of the Isle of Armor, the Bulbasaur line were the only pokemon capable of learning vine whip

I've always considered a move to be signature if it has one pokemon it fit's the theme of and that pokemon is known for it. So to me teleport has always been the signature move of Abra even though other pokemon can learn it even in that generation.

I'd say it would be reasonable for blacephalon to be able to learn pyro ball as well. It too is a humanoid-like fire type that uses fiery balls to attack with, I don't think it matters that it isn't sports related.

I have always looked at signiture moves as once they are on a pokemon, later gens shouldn't count against it. Water shuriken was made for Greninja while accelgor can learn it now but it wasn't made for accelgor.

Ive never agreed with the idea that "signature moves" have to be unique. I believe signature moves should just be the move that basically defines a Pokémon, the most important move. Vine whip for bulbasaur line for example. Declassifying signature moves shouldn't be a thing. If a new Pokémon learned the move sketch, I'd still argue that it's still the signature move of smeargle. They are SIGNATURE moves, not UNIQUE moves. They just happen to overlap quite often.

I feel the same way. That's why I consider Megahorn to still be Heracross' signature move, same with Water Shuriken for Greninja. And Megahorn in particular, the whole reason it is a bug type move is because it's still Heracross' Sig, just not unique to it anymore.

Having found this video in the final week before Scarlet and Violet, I think it'd be a really fun exercise to look at all the signature moves of the previous game or two, and predict which ones will be handed out to others. Like, I can absolutely see something like Overdrive becoming accessible to other sound-based Pokemon, but something like Behemoth Bash is easily gonna stay where it is.

I feel being signature to the line for a time is enough for it to qualify. They'll reshuffle moves when they want to buff/powercreep other pokemon but it's always interesting to see it signature to one or only obtained through breeding. Having some meaning and why it's signature also adds some weight but a lot of these moves aren't really competitive viable or may be outclassed by later more generic moves.

One thing I noticed is that with certain Pokémon moves, a few of em belong to a certain genre of Pokémon. Spore is learned mostly by Mushroom Pokémon. Quiver dance is learned mostly by Butterfly/Moth Pokemon. Lava Plume is mostly learned by Volcanic Pokémon and Cosmic Power is learned by Pokémon from Outer Space.

I always defined "Signature moves" as a move that were originated and made popular by a specific pokemon/pokemon line. Like, other pokemon can learn Octozooka and Signal Beam now, but they are still considered Octillery and Volbeat's signature moves respectively. Like, at any point down the line, some other pokemon could learn Aeroblast but it's still going to be Lugia's signature move. Because it was his move first. And THAT'S the important part! That they were first and made the move famous. It's like Michael Jackson and the moonwalk. Lots of other people can do it, and probably do it better, BUT it's still considered his signature move.

Not all of them are powerful. Barrage was the signature move of the Exeggcute family ever from gens 1-7 (it got removed in gen 8). It's a physical Normal-type multihit attack with 85% accuracy and 15 base power. So basically just non-contact Fury Attack.

I feel like the ponyta line should be able to learn blaze kick - they're physical attackers, with the only physical fire moves they can learn being flare blitz, flame charge, and flame wheel (that I know of) - they can learn double kick (granted, as an egg move), along with a couple other kicking moves, so they are capable of kicking - they're literal fire horses

To me a signature move is a move created for a specific pokemon. So moves like cut is not one as it is not “MADE FOR” farfetched, but moves like Milk Drink is a signature move as it was specifically made for a milk making pokemon then given to others.

A signature move is the move someone (in this case a Pokemon) is most well known for useing. This can be anything from dialga and roar of time,to Pikachu useing thunderbolt,or ditto(and mew) useing transform. Pikachu is not the only Pokemon that can learn thunderbolt,but it is it's signature move because it has had it sense indigo league,and is still useing it to this day (ash's Pikachu to be specific) At-least that's my take on the subject.

I tend to consider the term to mean "This move is a move that was creeated -for- or originally only learned by (naturally0 a single pokemon/pokemon line." Such as, Mystical Fire is still Delphox' signature move, even if there's 1 or two that can learn it without TMs. c: Or, better example, Crabhammer is -still- Krabby/Kingler's signature move, despite other pokemon learning it. Another good example, Crush Claw and Poison Tail are still the signature moves of Zangoose and Seviper respectively, because those moves were defining of their movesets. Even if others can learn them, it's -still- defined as the signature move of those pokemon, even after others learn it later on.

It is, especially since it can only learn Throat Chop via Move Tutor, so in the reasoning Lockstin uses, Throat Chop cannot even be a signature, since Incineraor can only learn it via outside intervention.

I always thought of a signature move as a move that was introduced in a new game by a single Pokemon. It doesn't matter if new or old Pokemon learn it later because it was originally exclusive. Though to be fair it doesn't make to much sense for gens 1 and 2 because some types had so few Pokemon that they were the only ones to know certain moves.
