The best thing about non-conventional engine swaps is that the car is guaranteed to be driven and not just put away Under Wraps

I feel the same way about guitars. A 64’ fender a few unoriginal things, maybe the paint stripper of or just very beat up. It has all the characteristics of a really great guitar but it’s much cheaper than a collectors piece and you’re going to play that guitar. Nothing sadder than stuff locked away in a storage space.

Got to remember the times. Even if he kept it as a Turbo 4 banger, modern Engine management would still be miles away from the original. IMO unless you went with an Iron Block, which most 4s aren't anymore, it would have upset that beautiful chassis. I'd be willing to bet he never hits that Transaxle with the full torque from a stand still.

They could be happy with a VAG 1.8T, there are tons of aftermarket, and some have the most reliable vvt setup besides vtec, that can bump it from a solid 180 hp to 225, which can be tuned in three stages, stomp the throttle, get the boost peaked, then pop the timing for another hill on the powerband, and still not be on the fringe of a meltdown. After all this, still get 25+ mpg for commuting, instad of putting that great engine in a carpet computer p.o.s. the A4 will be by now, with the Porsche's heavy ass, it will not need QUATTRO.

@@claytonhaske i used the original transaxle, but i don't expect it would survive too many hard launches. I made my own headers, I bought 3 different sets of cheap ebay ls swap headers and combined them into a set that would work. If I were doing it again I would probably just buy the cheaper set from renegade, I spent a looong time making those headers, and its a process to fit them once the engine is already in.

The LS engine series is the best thing to come out of the big bank and corporate bailouts of the 08 recession. Worldwide renown for their inexpensive price, small physical size, light weight, high durability, and of course high power and torque output. And the irony isn't lost on me, all the decades of the dual overhead cams and a 4 or 5 valves per cylinder running circles around american engine technology until the turbo arrived which turned out to be particularly well suited for pushrod engines and effectively snubbed half a century of complex head development. With efficient boost generation via a turbo supercharger making use of wasted energy from the exhaust gas extra valves and cams become more of a reliability liability and expense and unneeded complexity than an advantage. Don't get me wrong a K24 can make 500HP with stock internals which is impressive for a 4 cylinder, but those things are so tall the overall engine size is about the same as an LS just a different shape that actually makes them more difficult to fit into some cars since it's especially long on one dimension, which is why they used to slant engines when they used to make more inline ones. And if you're going to be taking up the same amount of space in the engine bay, might as well get an engine that has more power and way more torque. And Honda is really just an exception, their reliability is insane which is how they can be boosted so high with stock internals or just pistons and rods. No other 4 cylinder manufacturer makes engines that strong and reliable that you can just do that. It's nice to see you guys enjoying the car it looks really fun to drive. 944 is one of the best looking cars of all time and its size and weight are about as perfect as it gets along with RX7s. But when does a 2 door sports car not look good ya know. They always look good as long as they were designed half decent.

How does the Transaxle hold up to the torque? That would be my biggest concern on stronger shifts. It's not overly difficult to get a c6 down to around 3000lbs and you already know the running gear is overbuilt. If only it were SLC or GTM weight, 2600lbs or less would be a monster. I used to drive a 944 S2 but always felt it was underpowered. Also the shift was heavy work. Recently I watched a video of someone who had put an LS in a DeLorean... I sat in a DeLorean and felt the lack of comfortable headroom. My 944 S2 was very comfortable for me. If I had an LS in it today I would have kept it.

Just needed better damping via the front struts and rear shocks or just a conversion to coilovers.

I own a 1986 Porsche 944 na and it definitely needs more power (a better sound too because 4 cylinder motor...) An LS swap on a 944 seems to be a great idea... Having a V8 sound, 100s more hp and plenty of parts to tune your engine... I need that now!

I have a 2010 C-6 that I just drove 25,000 miles in the last two summers. Sounds like the 944 LS3 is even quicker. Great fun. Ps - wife and I really enjoy your show.

I love that at a hipshot it seems like the Porsche purist is absolutely is enthralled with it, and Todd is confused. But then love prevails.

@@Mike-pr8hx AC works (new condenser and compressor during swap), power steering works, all gauges work (except for the mpg vacuum gauge, so now I get 60mpg all the time!).

As a cheap option, if the speedo doesn’t work you can always get a small gps for the dash, they track mph

There are custom shops over in Europe that do similar things. One outfit puts an LS in the Jensen Interceptor. I believe there is one doing the same to TVR's, and a few other complete custom shops that basically take LS's and put them into smaller compact sports cars to create glorious monsters. Carroll Shelby found that magic mix decades ago. I'm surprised it hasn't been done more often than it is. Especially with LS swaps being SO popular these days. Outside of Mazda Miatas and RX7's i've not seen it done in as many one-offs as should be. Love that this was done in a 944. I'd REALLY like to see it done in a 928.

The rotory guys all said the same thing,,,, until they drove the Mazda RX7 LS swap! How do I know? I built one! My Mopar friends, my chevy friends, and my Ford friends all road in it, all drove it, and all wet themselves! Yeah an LS swap RX7 or Porsche can say they have the best of "ALL WORLDS" of cars! Quick, top speed, handles like a slot car, and in my case got 29 mpg as long as I kept my foot out of it! Mine went 12 flat in the 1/4 mile, topped out at about 165mph, had great brakes with four piston fronts and single rears with slotted rotors all around. And to top off the rediculousness of this swap, I put an 8.8 IRS swap into the car, leaving me with endless gears too choose from. Frankenstein has less breeds! Yet if you ever get to drive one, you will stand in line for one built!

I would love to build one of these. The 944 was my ‘goal’ car when I was in college, but I never bought one. But now, many years later, I would love to find a nice 944 and make it into something like this.
