I am the owner of the car. This video was fun to watch! It's always interesting to see someone else drive your car. I bought the car in september in Chicago and flew out to pick it up, and drove it back to Park City in a day and a half. Nebraska is long and boring. The car has 145k on it, and has had the following work done to it after being picked up stock. I immediately did a full frontal reseal, new pulleys, water pump, thermostat, timing belt, etc. I have records of the clutch being replaced with the factory HD unit, and rear main seal, throw out bearing, etc... everything 20k ago. The car came with a folder full of receipts for work on it over the last 15 years. This winter I had the stock (original un rebuilt) turbo rebuilt by evergreen turbo. It is a k26/8 as opposed to the earlier cars k26/6 unit. While I was in there, I redid all the vacuum lines, the air oil separator seals, all hoses (heater hoses, heater valve, all coolant hoses), a vitesse maf+ kit with map sensor replaced the AFM, and came with larger injectors, 3 bar fuel pressure regulator, and i installed an Apexi avcr, and tial f38 wastegate to control boost. An AEM uego wideband keeps an eye on afrs. The car has been improved since the guys drove it, it got a 968 m030 adjustable rear sway bar. Because the car came with the m030 package, the paragon adjustable ride height kit came with a mild increase of spring rate to 200lbs (stock was progressive to 180lbs). A bit of tuning work on the engine has fixed my idle issues (I had rebuilt the throttle body and the new seals needed to settle) and brought the afrs a little less rich. A trip to the dyno is necessary to see how accurate my ass was when I pulled that hp number out. Currently boost is dialed down to around 14psi for daily driving duties, with a quick touch to the scramble boost button and it will jump to 16psi for 2 minutes. If it is sunny out, I drive it to work. It's fun. I look forward to the future reviews in this segment, I agree with some of the other comments, I love reviews of older enthusiast cars more than the new ones, (but these guys are great at those too!)

First off, I almost never comment on youtube videos. Second, I've been driving my 1985 Porsche 944 every day for over 16 years now. Well almost. It has broken down a several times over those years and I had to drive other piles of crap. I've driven this thing through insane winter blizzards. Crazy hail storms (golfball sized). Intense horrid railfalls. I gotta tell ya, with the 50/50 weight distribution. This thing is a solid stone. I love this fucking car. It has cost me a fortune to keep on the road and I am poor as hell. I would love nothing more than to drive this car forever.

I took european delivery of a 1986 944Turbo in August/1986 and it was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING ! This video brings back so many memories and what an amazing Porsche !! Never got the accolades that it deserved.....but for us owners, it was lightyears ahead of the front-engined competition !! First time I have visited (or rather discovered) EverydayDriver, but am now subscribed !!

me personally I love the 928 Porsche but, I have to say I'm still a big fan of the 944. It's a beautiful ride. My friend had one and I drove a Ford F-250 pickup which he's was always borrowing to do some work so, that left me driving his 944. Awe, poor me, lol.

Back when I was in college, I fancied trading my '91 Mustang GT for a little older 944 on the used car lot in my small town. One drive around the block quite literally knocked the sense back into me. The suspension was so rough (as you can see in the vid), that it was almost undriveable on anything other than super smooth track. Today, I'm enjoying my 228i very much, and it is sooo much easier to drive.

I've had 3 944 Turbo's. All 86 models. They were the lightest. My last one I bought had 38,000 miles on it. It was graphite metallic with no sunroof. Very rare. Unfortunately due to such low miles, after adding a few bolt on mods, I blew a head gasket and found a crack in a cylinder wall. I had a 3 liter motor built with head work, exhaust, Rogue M Tune etc. the car had about 520 hp at the crank. These cars are amazing. Light, very well balanced and fun to drive. No automation, just a pure drivers car.

EDIT: Just read the owner's description of this car. So it has only 200lb springs in it. Waay too soft and why one of the reviewers found it had too much roll. Some years back I ran KWs with 650lb front and equivalent 710lb rear for a couple of years on road and track. That car was on rails but the KW's have such good valving that you can have your cake and eat it too. It was still totally comfortable on the road. His car also has the old K26/8 turbo which can be improved upon clearly. He could contact Vitesse Racing and get one of their matching turbos. Not cheap but work well and are bolt on. There are other options out there too. Doesn't detract from the driveability of these car for a still largely street application.

I just last week bought a 951 (86 model) that the PO installed a Lindsey racing upgrade kit in. At 15 PSI this thing will just shove you back in the seat and take off at 70 MPH in 4rth gear! It is intoxicating! Is it a hell cat? No, it is a refined high speed road car not a drag car. Completely different animal. I love it!!

I had a 1986 Porsche 951(944 turbo) bought with 78k miles owned it for 16 years sold it in 2007 with 232k miles. Virtually problem free. Tires, brakes, timing belt coil overs that’s it. Original Clutch. Paid $9500 for it drove it forever and did it for $7800. I did chip it when it had around 150k miles and it was much better. Weltomaster chip good for 280hp they claim. I really Wish all the time I would have kept that car. I look around for nice ones but, their all Beat to shit or Over priced. Like $16k. I have such Great memories in that car. I drove that car everyday except in Snow. That Porsche outlasted two marriages hahaha. Don’t make them like that anymore.

As for the boost coming on at 3000 I have a 1986 944 turbo with a Lindsey racing dual port waste gate and a manual boost controller. If you nail the throttle at 3000 and keep it pinned it will come on very strong...if are hesitant and roll on the throttle slowly it will come on more slowly.. Just a function of the setup...Drive it like you stole it and it will reward you!!

People seem to forget that the 944 platform was tested at the crucible of Lemans after it's mundane beginnings. A properly tuned 944 is a track weapon. Think about this, out of a gigantic field of cars the 924 GTS race cars finished 12th overall at Lemans, not in their class, but overall against GT1, GT2, GT3, LMP, Prototypes! Astonishing. The 944 platform is criminally underated and that's now changing with their value beginning to rocket for well kept examples. About time! Respect!

My dad had a Black 1987 944 Porsche in the late 90's. Always stuck with me how cool it was then. So, I knew what I had to have in High school. My first car was a Guards Red 1987 944 Porsche w/ over 44k orginal miles. Drove it daily for 5 years and into college. Then got a BMW 645ci and now a BMW 650i. Love my car now but STILL miss it time-to-time and will consider having a Black Turbo model one of these days..

Great video, guys. I have an '83 Porsche 944 (non turbo) and you touched upon pretty much everything I love about owning this car. Even as a non turbo, mine is quick and nimble with plenty of power. For a thirty year old car, the 944 is also quite the head turner, and I feel that its styling can hold its own against any modern car you put it up against-- even the modern Porsches.

Change it out to some good KW shocks. Replace the old rubber bushings with some monoballs from Racers Edge and change out the old stock sized wheels and run 10" all round with some 275/18" Nitto Nt01's...that transforms the car a LOT. The car in the Video has at least a Vitesse Maf kit, if not one of their turbos. These are a totally undervalued car and somewhat frowned upon by the 911 community. Can be made quicker than a modern GT3 and for some, even quicker than a modern Cup Car. Plenty of videos on KZbin as examples.

Fuchs 15/16' rims (as those you could see on most 911) were superbly fitting the 944 body. Alas mine was sporting the stock alloy wheels:(:( I was used to drive a 944T 220hp, a preowned regularly serviced car in an awesome platinum metallic / dark brown leather combo. Then I got spacers mounted so as to visually filling the gap between tyres and the beautifully flared wheelarches. It truly looked gorgeous, still having its sober elegance fully preserved.Or was my daydriver (as most Porsche cars were) and, being fair, allowed fast cruising on our long highways as much as my previous SC and Carrera 3.2 did, yet being way more comfortable eventhough not as exciting. I guess 944 possibly was ahead of its time, yet it sold decently and as far as I can see a number of enthusiasts are still around.

Love my '90 S2. This review seems pretty much bang on. Steering is full of feel, not initially twitchy off center. On some low speed corners you do need maybe more input than what you'd expect but it really isn't a big detractor to the car whatsoever. My 86' 944 Turbo has been nothing but a great car for the years I have had it without all the expensive maintenance of a 911 Porsche. I get 34 MPG driving on the highway at 75 mph and the ride is great, plenty of room too. I have put new tires on in the 6 years I have had it and that's it. Hard to beat for sure.

My dad had two of these when I was still a child. I just loved the 944 - always reminded me a bit of Knight Rider somehow. And it was so big. We fit in two adults, my sis and I in the back, plus our dog and a lot of technical equipment in the trunk. I always dreamed of this being my first car. When I got my license at 18 (in Germany you had to be 18) there were some old used 944's available but the insurance for one year would have cost me more than the car itself. So in the end, I wasn't able to afford one. :(

I'd always liked the 944 and the turbo when I was in college. The 944 was in the movie "Pretty In Pink" back in the 80's. Now, I have a few Porsches. One of my collection is gen 2 GT3 RS. By the time I could afford a Porsche, neither the 944 and 968 in production. Thanks for showing this video, I still like the look of the 944 turbo. It looks good in black body paint. Great driver's car. 50/50 weight balance distribution. 928 is the big brother GT sport coupe.

I am following the $500 944 rebuild on a budget. WatchJRGO and probably why this video came up. Engine in the front and transmission in the back. Porsche designers wanted a balanced car and a great track car base to start with. 400 whp and stripped of weight for racing still makes it competitive.

I purchased a new 1979 911SC off the showroom floor (I'm 53 years old - yeah, I was really young for a car like that, but hey -- I knew what I loved even back then, and I had a co-signer), so I'm definitely down with old Porches. Other cars I'd LOVE to see you guys do: The '79ish Datsun 280z, the Triumph TR8, a '78ish RX-7, an Alfa Romeo Veloce Sprint Quadrifoglio, and... (don't laugh) a Merkur XR4Ti. (I love all these cars for various sentimental reasons - the Merkur XR4Ti, I would have to say, was the greatest sleeper car of its half-decade. Just a fantastic car, with a level of fit and finish that was competitive with BMW and Mercedes, and a real blast to drive. I'd love to see you guys give a shout-out to that car. Again, thanks for videos!) You guys should come up to my neck of the woods and drive the road from Palm Desert up to Idyllwild - that's my happy place. Btw... I'm shooting with Nikon, watching my shows (and washing my clothes) on a Samsung, sitting at an IKEA desk, drinking a Santa Ynez Syrah, typing this on a Mac, but still driving German today.

Love this concept! have been dying for a youtube channel to do a whole bunch of these types of cars. Would love to see not heavily modified cars like: E30 325i/318is Mercedes 190e VW Mk1 gti/Mk2 gti Mazda RX7 Nissan R31,32,33 skylines Toyota supra (not modded to hell) Subaru's early WRX's Audi quattro's and so forth.... I would also love to maybe see you guys somehow get a hold of a simple track & drag strip and do some numbers on them much like the Motor Trend guys do with there head to head. Great stuff though!

You guys should do a review on a late 80s turbo supra with some bolt on parts it transforms into a great handling rocket! Big turbo on a straight 6 with a open exhaust pulls really hard when the turbo spools up!! I have owned 4 of them now and I can't stop driving them, it's a unique experience and you don't see a lot of them on the road where I live.

I own a 87 944S that I picked up cheap as a restoration project. And WOW! The car is a BLAST to drive, and if you are mechanically inclined, the parts are not that bad at all! In my opinion, some good to great classy bang for your buck. This is my 4 overall Porsche and so far, one of the most fun to drive. Cornering is great due to its basically 50/50 balance due to the trans-axle in the rear.

Shocker Paul is in love with the car. I'd say he should get one of the more affordable options from the previous car debate and supplement with a classic Porsche. Do it Paul. 2 cars!

For the relatively inexpensive 8-10k buy in price not only is it a Turbo. But it's a Porsche. :) I think as far as late 80's Porsche goes i'd rather have the 928 but the 944 is much more likely to be attainable.

I just drove an 83 model non turbo 944 today. It's an unmolested example original everything, recently original steering wheel put back on etc.. It drives really well, apart from a clunk in the rear which I think could be a mount of some sort. I have to say I was never a Porsche guy, but having driven a 944 I have to admit I see what the big deal is now. Things I didn't like were the non-power steering, although I kinda like it I found it quite hard at low speeds, I've got a 240z for comparison which is easy with to steer with the standard wheel. This was much harder work. The steering wheel position also felt too low and I found it hard to taking tight corners with my hands having to move past my legs. Maybe it was improved on later 944s? The interior was quite spacious, no air con which made it a bit stuffy inside, although the removable sunroof is awesome. Had I not already had an FD RX-7 I'd be tempted to buy 1 of these as a Turbo 944. The styling of the 944 has never really grabbed me, sure it looks nice but not amazing. I do really like the sound of the engine and the way it responds, it feels like a fun car to drive and given how cheap they are I think they are a true bargain car, if you can find a good 1.

Great series. For those of us who may want a 3rd car, something fun, but ou first name isn't "Sheik". I appreciate coming back to basics: those cars that are fun because we just like them. Or grew up with them and now have the scratch to buy them. Looking forward to more. Great films (well done with sound and images)
