As a Golf R owner, I also factored in how much the car settles down and becomes comfortable in comfort mode with the adjustable shocks- essentially gives you the dynamics of two vehicles in one. After working stressful 12-16 hour shifts, sometimes you just want the car to take care of you when it's not lighting your hair on fire. Had the exact same experience with the FK8. After I failed to get an FK8, I traded my Accord for a Golf R (Got one for $3k UNDER MSRP from Mission Bay VW) and since then bought/sold 3 other new cars from VW. The Type R was my dream car since I was young but the dealer experience killed my interest and my loyalty to the brand.

And wages haven't really increased meaningfully for a very long time.
@KurokoShirai Жыл бұрын
It depends a lot on what you mean by "faster". If you go and look at C&D's lightning laps chart, you'll find that the FL5 CTR laps VIR faster than cars like 911 S (2013), F-Type R (2021) and M2 Competition (2019), amongst many others...which I feel still qualifies that it's almost as fast (and indeed, faster) than many contemporary sports cars.
@aaronschen9896 Жыл бұрын
CTR is the closest but also the highest priced in practice. LL interpretation is tricky, it gets faster every year for similar cars. Tires are getting better but I think they are just getting better drivers as well. Their ctr was on cup 2s, maybe actually one of the slowest car to get cup 2s. The difference in lap time between a 2003 evo and say a 2003 vette or 2003 911 is smaller than the difference between the lap time for a ctr and say a 2023 911 or vette. Maybe its just that sports cars were particularly bad in the early aughts.

I guess also, a 2003 evo or sti on cup2s wouldnt be much slower than a ctr. That is my opinion of course without internet racing data to prove

Si being limited to a sedan rules out the perks of a hatch, and Toyota... well, we can tell that there's no inbetween the XSE and GR, and they're leagues apart. Sadly the still-pricey Integra is as close to a hot-hatch as Honda Corporation is giving us, and it's still the same problem I have with the Mazda3, Corolla, and Civic: they're basically fastbacks. The GTi is a proper squared off shape without the roof cascading down on bulky items. Apart from that and a Mini Clubman (a regular Mini really seems too small inside for much practicality in that regard), that's the problem with hatches these days.

Actually by this measure, the VW isn't too bad. 2019, the last model year that the Mk7 Golf R was sold you could climb into one for a now inflation adjusted ~$49.5k. Given the ~$44.7k MSRP of the 2023 R, VW is pricing well below current inflation rates. Type R on the other hand (also baselining 2019) would be ~$44.5k in today's dollars compared to an actual 2023 MSRP of ~$44.7k. So you're being screwed there a bit more, but no worse than just about everything else nowadays. Besides in my eyes, the biggest issue isn't inflation, it's the obscene dealer markups.

The longest wheelbase car is the lightest... I know what you guys are feeling. I have an RX-8 and a 300zx. The RX-8 is 200 lb lighter but has a longer wheelbase. Directly off center, when you first start to make the car change direction, the RX-8 feels the most nimble, because it has the least resistance to changing it's direction of motion. But paradoxically, on a switchback, the 300zx feels more nimble, because you've brought the speed down a bit so the momentum trying to keep you moving in the same direction is lessened. This means the dominant factor affecting a sense of nimbleness becomes the rotation of the car; its willingness - not to change the direction in which it is moving - but the direction in which it is pointing. And the shorter wheelbase 300zx feels substantially more nimble in aggressive, tight corners.

Great review - and I think that my take is that the traditional hot hatch is dead. As the average car now costs $50K, these models are actually a lot of car for the money. These cars each offer something different that can appeal to a wide audience of drivers. As a 2022 Golf R owner I have no interest in the GR Corolla, but am curious about the Type-R, my take from the test is that I bought the best car for my needs and I have been delighted with my car. The spec.and performance of the Golf R is amazing and I enjoy the tech. A similarly equipped S3 would cost approx. $10K more and lack the new AWD system fitted to the R and the RS 3. As both testers pointed out the engineers of each company put a lot of work into each model and what you have is a truly high performance cars that appeal to a wide audience. I like each of them, but would always go with the Golf R for my own personal reasons!

The GR Corolla is the best msrp, at 37k but I’ve called every dealer in my state, 6 year wait list with a non refundable $1000 deposit. I did find one several states away. But double tax, title, plates times 2 put it out of my budget, so a 23 mk8 gti se came home from my local dealer at msrp.

It's weird how they can't stop praising the CTR like... They both love it, it's a road killing machine, it's perfect in some ways, yet they pick the Corolla. It's like saying "this is the clear winner by a lot, but and it's so obvious but we're gonna pick other car".

Super informative video and a really great job of adding nuanced driving and potential ownership opinions missed in other reviews. Lucky enough to have a GR Corolla in the garage, hope to swap keys with a TypeR owner - what a total package. I never thought I would be back in a Toyota after a string of German cars, but wow I had to support the tremendous engineering work GR and Toyota are offering. The current GolfR feels like a miss vs older generations, but don't count VW out... they'll be back

If all prices stayed MSRP, it would be the CTR for me. But since they aren’t, the Golf R is the winner here, despite its horrific interior. Maybe videos like this should be stopped until MSRP prices came back. That in itself skews the stats.

This is a thorough review. It's not just the lack of being able to order a Toyota/Honda GR/Type R, but also the markups AND interest rates are ridiculously high, ... like 5%+. I saw Toyota's website advertising rates at 7%. Who the heck wants to pay $200/month in interest? It just doesn't make sense, too, that you can't build/order a Toyota or Honda.
@kerney3043 Жыл бұрын
If the pricing was identical, I'd probably go with the Type R....the issue is that the Core model of the GR is the same car for $4-5k less with all three options including the LSDs. The only difference between the Circuit and Core is then cosmetic (roof, wing, hood, seat coverings - seats are the same). After visiting multiple dealerships, I can found GRs for close to MSRP ($1k or so required accessories) while the Type Rs were in the $10k ADM/accessory range making the difference in price $13-14k. I loved driving the Type R, but I'm buying the GR.

It's sad that dealers are going to be the death blow for this segment. Manufactures will say they didn't sell like expected when in reality at MSRP they could print money, but with the added markups it defeats the entire purpose of the turbo hatch segment.

I’m shocked you guys picked corolla over type R. I just watched a similar comparison on savageese and totally agree with them. Type R is superior in in car infotaiment, audio quality, driving dynamics. The corolla even had heating issues in their tests.
@EverydayDriver Жыл бұрын
We hope you noticed that we acknowledged many superior things about the Type R. It is a truly impressive car. We’ve also seen the Savagegeese comparison and we love their work. Consider the following: The goal of our work is always to find the car that is the most fun, and we test on back roads. SG is looking for cold hard lap times and engineering for track use. Many times in our 16+ years of doing car comparisons, the one that’s the “superior” car isn’t the most fun to actually drive - and that happened here. We found Carlos Lagos comments on the SG piece quite interesting as he discussed the Corolla for the street. In SGs testing format the CTR is an obvious winner. Depends on what you’re looking for. We hope you’ve driven all of these. Thanks for watching!

If Honda only made a Civic Si hatchback with about 225hp. That would be the best of all worlds and would take the fight to the GTI. As for the GRC, it's awesome but a bit too compromised on space if you need the back seats and the cargo area. And, until VW fixes their trainwreck interface, the Mk8 R will not be an option for me.

I test drove the Golf R and Type R on the same day to gain fresh impressionable comparisons between both vehicles. I agree the type r is so much more fun and dynamic even though a front wheel drive. The gearbox is a pleasure to use. The grip from those 265mm tyres and balance of the car pushes you to test the car even more. What a great video, guys; those roads you were driving on were fantastic! If I had to have only one car, I still think I'd gravitate to something the the GR86, but that's because I find I prefer rear wheel drive. If I was just picking between these 3 here, I would probably agree with both Todd and Paul and choose the GR Corolla. At least in that I'd have the option to make the AWD system rear wheel drive biased. And if, as these two are saying, it's the most outright playful in demeanor, I think that's what I'd gravitate towards. Of course, I say this not having driven (or even seen) any of these cars personally.
