The Civic Type R never existed in our market. Nor the GR. They did add 5k to the VW this past year. But in large, this kind of performance has never been 'affordable'. And affordable still exists one rung down with the Civic Si, the GR86 and the GTI. I don't think it's fair to complain about the MSRP's but they definitely aren't building enough of these cars!

As a Golf R owner, I also factored in how much the car settles down and becomes comfortable in comfort mode with the adjustable shocks- essentially gives you the dynamics of two vehicles in one. After working stressful 12-16 hour shifts, sometimes you just want the car to take care of you when it's not lighting your hair on fire. The AWD was also very important for my geographic location (untreated icy roads with hills)

Si being limited to a sedan rules out the perks of a hatch, and Toyota... well, we can tell that there's no inbetween the XSE and GR, and they're leagues apart. Sadly the still-pricey Integra is as close to a hot-hatch as Honda Corporation is giving us, and it's still the same problem I have with the Mazda3, Corolla, and Civic: they're basically fastbacks. The GTi is a proper squared off shape without the roof cascading down on bulky items. Apart from that and a Mini Clubman (a regular Mini really seems too small inside for much practicality in that regard), that's the problem with hatches these days.

It depends a lot on what you mean by "faster". If you go and look at C&D's lightning laps chart, you'll find that the FL5 CTR laps VIR faster than cars like 911 S (2013), F-Type R (2021) and M2 Competition (2019), amongst many others...which I feel still qualifies that it's almost as fast (and indeed, faster) than many contemporary sports cars.
@aaronschen9896
@aaronschen9896 Жыл бұрын
CTR is the closest but also the highest priced in practice. LL interpretation is tricky, it gets faster every year for similar cars. Tires are getting better but I think they are just getting better drivers as well. Their ctr was on cup 2s, maybe actually one of the slowest car to get cup 2s. The difference in lap time between a 2003 evo and say a 2003 vette or 2003 911 is smaller than the difference between the lap time for a ctr and say a 2023 911 or vette. Maybe its just that sports cars were particularly bad in the early aughts.
@aaronschen9896

Can confirm the crazy markups. Went into my local Honda in SF to try and order the FL5 Type R and they quoted $64,999 before tax, title, and registration ($20k markup over MSRP). Had the exact same experience with the FK8. After I failed to get an FK8, I traded my Accord for a Golf R (Got one for $3k UNDER MSRP from Mission Bay VW) and since then bought/sold 3 other new cars from VW. The Type R was my dream car since I was young but the dealer experience killed my interest and my loyalty to the brand.

Great content as usual, just wondering if you guys could bring some Todd once said "old retired assassin" like Mitsubishi EVO X and WRX STI VAB into the test for GR Corolla, since with current dealership markup averages 5k to 10k on GR Corolla, a lightly used lightly/unmodified EVO X (as a 2015 EVO X owner mine is unmodified except the 2014 Recaro seats I put in @Paul!, and yes you could still find them even today) and WRX STI might fit the bill in terms of the fun equation (according to Tood in the Focus RS reviewed 7 years ago), and for the car enthusiast, buying used is as likely as purchasing new ones. Please do it, guys! - an old viewer from 2015

I was thinking almost the same thing. I think cars are so expensive today the real value is used. I think the VA WRX also makes a great case for a fun daily. A good one can be found around 25k for those that don't want the harsher ride of the STi which is also at great value around 30k used. I love the AWD sport compact segment and was really excited about the GR Corolla when I heard about it, but immediately moved on when I heard the price (Edit: just looked at a core with performance (both diffs) and cold weather package, it's 37.5k which actually isn't as bad as I thought). Maybe in a few years when the depreciation comes they will be a great value.

If I was just picking between these 3 here, I would probably agree with both Todd and Paul and choose the GR Corolla. At least in that I'd have the option to make the AWD system rear wheel drive biased. And if, as these two are saying, it's the most outright playful in demeanor, I think that's what I'd gravitate towards. Of course, I say this not having driven (or even seen) any of these cars personally.

@@timhahn7358 I won't disagree with your decision. I bought the GR86 and did not test drive the MK7.5 or MK8 GTI and I regret it. The GR86 is definitely a fun car but for daily city driving sucks especially driving it in the winter (used Blizzak's WS90). I kept looking at the MK7.5/8 GTI as the best middle ground, AWD, more than enough power, good interior space, and better mileage.

Great review - and I think that my take is that the traditional hot hatch is dead. As the average car now costs $50K, these models are actually a lot of car for the money. These cars each offer something different that can appeal to a wide audience of drivers. As a 2022 Golf R owner I have no interest in the GR Corolla, but am curious about the Type-R, my take from the test is that I bought the best car for my needs and I have been delighted with my car. The spec.and performance of the Golf R is amazing and I enjoy the tech. A similarly equipped S3 would cost approx. $10K more and lack the new AWD system fitted to the R and the RS 3. As both testers pointed out the engineers of each company put a lot of work into each model and what you have is a truly high performance cars that appeal to a wide audience. I like each of them, but would always go with the Golf R for my own personal reasons!

Actually by this measure, the VW isn't too bad. 2019, the last model year that the Mk7 Golf R was sold you could climb into one for a now inflation adjusted ~$49.5k. Given the ~$44.7k MSRP of the 2023 R, VW is pricing well below current inflation rates. Type R on the other hand (also baselining 2019) would be ~$44.5k in today's dollars compared to an actual 2023 MSRP of ~$44.7k. So you're being screwed there a bit more, but no worse than just about everything else nowadays. Besides in my eyes, the biggest issue isn't inflation, it's the obscene dealer markups.

The longest wheelbase car is the lightest... I know what you guys are feeling. I have an RX-8 and a 300zx. The RX-8 is 200 lb lighter but has a longer wheelbase. Directly off center, when you first start to make the car change direction, the RX-8 feels the most nimble, because it has the least resistance to changing it's direction of motion. But paradoxically, on a switchback, the 300zx feels more nimble, because you've brought the speed down a bit so the momentum trying to keep you moving in the same direction is lessened. This means the dominant factor affecting a sense of nimbleness becomes the rotation of the car; its willingness - not to change the direction in which it is moving - but the direction in which it is pointing. And the shorter wheelbase 300zx feels substantially more nimble in aggressive, tight corners.

The CTR and Golf R were also getting huge dealer add-ons in my area, the Pacific NW. I was able to get my loaded GR Corolla, which is mechanically identical to the Circuit Edition, for just under $40k, as are many others around the country. There are dealers adding ADM, but there are also many, many dealers selling for MSRP. The GR Corolla is so much fun to drive and just driving 65 mph on local highways I'm seeing around 33 mpg as the engine starts to break in with around 1500 miles now. Thanks for a fun video.

This was a pretty amazing video off all our favorite hot hatches that no one can buy! Very interesting to learn what that is in this video. I thought it was still a supply chain issue or something like that but I haven't really looked into it much. I was really surprised to hear how badly the Golf R compared to the other two! I've always been a VW loyalist and was thinking that would be the next best car to try and acquire for my needs. I didn't realize how numb it is compared to the other two. The Drunken rowdiness comparison was quite hilarious! The main thing I never thought about is the exhaust pops. If it truly sounds like the exhaust hitting something that would be terrible! I'm not a pops and bang type person either so that my sway me away from R as much as I love the looks and interior and overall functionality. I could never deal with the Red seats in the Type R as amazing as that car sounds. I think it also looks fantastic after seeing it in your video! The GR Corolla sounds like an absolute blast! However, I don't really care for the looks of the strange flared rear fender. The overall look of the car and interior doesn't do much for me. Other that that all these cars seem to offer something very unique for the hot hatch enthusiast! Since I'm getting older might still just consider the Golf R because it seems the most suitable and classy for me (aside from the POPS). Also, unless you're taking these to a track or lucky enough to drive the way you guys get to drive these it would be rare you could take advantage of what the GR Corolla or Type R offer in terms of driving fun.
