Speaking of Sepultura, Max and Igor (Cavalera Conspiracy) rerecording the early albums has been awesome. Morbid Visions, Bestial Devastation, and Schizophrenia still hold that old raw sound but just cleaned up a bit and mastered in a way you can hear it all. They really kept the soul of those albums. It really shows you can record something with todays tech and keep the sound of a late 80's underground release.

The take about legacy bands sounding worse now because of clean production is absolutely true. I think the pinnacle of metal production was the 90s and first couple years of the 2000s. It's clean enough that it doesn't sound like absolute dogshit, but it also isn't so digitally enhanced to the point it was annoying. Case and point, go listen to the original In Flames - Clayman from 2000, then listen to the re-recording Clayman 2020. 2020 sounds fucking terrible. Albums from 96-04 give or take a year sound great.

@EchoMountain47 Of course, you misunderstand what I meant, but that isn't surprising considering your post. Maybe my post was too long for you? Anyways, I'll try to simplify what I said so you can follow along. Tool writes long songs, and you need to have a decent attention span to really appreciate all the nuiances packed into them. They aren't the 3:30 verse, chorus, verse, bridge, outro type songs that are radio friendly. If that's what you like, great! Rock out! But, you need to understand that doesn't do it for everyone. Some people need a little more in their music to scratch that itch, and Tool does it for a lot of people.

Once reason I love ...And Justice for All (yes, Metallica stan here) is that it has VERY distinct production and I love its tone and sound. And I know Rick Rubin gets shit on for his production but I think he adds character to songs from like uber-compression or thin/reedy sounding stuff that makes songs more memorable or unique.

Hey Finn do you like Mortician at all? I got their album when the track with the "When there's no more room in hell, the death will walk the earth" sample at the beginning and have always found real joy listening to that band. They're not great, but for some reason they just do it for me. Over the top programmed drums, simple chug riffs and horror movie samples every 45 seconds haha, good stuff. Wondered if you dig them at all?
