I genuinely like Bad Omens. I was recently waiting in line at a concert and I started talking to this guy next to me in line, he said that he doesn’t like how “anti-god” Bad Omens are. I responded: “funny, that’s one of the reasons I was attracted to the band.”. I don’t understand listening to rock and metal and being shocked when you find out that there’s a lot of blasphemy and anti-god subject matter, like in the BMTH situation, you have these supposed fans of the band who are outraged about the concert flyer that read “if Jesus comes back we’ll kill the the fu***r twice” or whatever it said. Why is that where they drew the line in the sand? Lmao Imagine calling yourself a fan without even knowing what the band is writing about.
@holyviolence7777 ай бұрын
and he’s as valid for not liking it as you are for liking it. sure it’s more common in metal but that doesn’t mean that everyone is gonna like or even relate to those darker lyrical themes. and it’s not to say you’re wrong for liking them either. it’s just all the same. just because somebody likes how a band sounds doesn’t mean they have to be on board with the lyrical subject matter. “drawing the line” is personal and comes down to preference. there’s no right or wrong place to do it.
@holyviolence7777 ай бұрын
a lot of metal fans don’t care about lyrics either. i honestly don’t as much. but for people that do and want to listen to something they relate to lyrically i don’t see an issue with that. let’s be honest as badass as they are, a lot of deathcore bands for example don’t have relatable lyrics and i can see that being a turnoff even if someone happens to like the riffs. and that’s kinda what you’re running into here

I do think there has been a rise in wokeness in the rock/metal scene and I do find it pretty annoying when these people feel a need to be like “Reminder that racism is bad!” “Reminder that trans rights are human rights!” because it’s like “Yes dear, we know.” But I also think it’s a waste of energy to care about people doing that because I’m just sick of politics no matter what, and it gets in the way of why it is that we enjoy art. It doesn’t matter who’s worse or who’s more annoying and I also think it’s a waste of time to argue about that.

At this point in life - I'm 35 - I listen to artists based on if I like them or not. I dont care about their politics, their social media, that they've been accused of, if they are supposedly a "fascist" or some woke activist. I care about how they sound and how it makes ME feel when I listen to it. I've got 3 young kids, a high mortgage payment, and I probably have to get a second job to help actually save some money for future expenses. When I listen to music, I am NOT worrying about what other people say about them. One of the best things in life is learning this lesson: Dont have any shame or guilt for enjoying the music and media you do. IF people bring up the fact its "questionable, problematic, woke, or whatever ist or ism", you simply say, "I dont care or give a shit." IF they make a huge deal about that and suddenly dont want to hang out with you or be your "friend", good riddance. You dont have time for that shit or want it in your life. Misery loves its company. Shun those people like the plague and let them wallow in the sludge together. Life is short. Enjoy it.

If we are going by the definition of "woke" before it became Republicans' new version of the Red Scare, it used to simply mean you are aware of and care about social issues around us. And when combining that term with music, some are fools to think that music was ever not "woke". Go back to Billie Holliday daring to sing about lynchings, or the entire late 60s. Half of early punk was talking about foreign wars or criticizing Reagan. Some folks with a lack of listening/reading comp did not label RATM as "woke" until they somehow realized after 30 years that they were not singing about the GOP taking the power back. Half of Metallica's big hits could be accused of being "woke" by questioning the goals of war and the horrible pain and loss it causes("For Whom the Bell Tolls" or "One"), or discussing the crippling grip of addiction( "Master of Puppets") or growing up in the indoctrination of religious fundamentalists("The Unforgiven").

Being an intelligent and critical thinker is what made the left push me so far to the right. You start to recognize patterns and ideological inconsistencies and the left reeeeeally doesn't like it when you start pointing that stuff out.
@homelander77427 ай бұрын
Nothing says "I'm an intelligent and critical thinker" like admitting that other people pushed your political views to the right by being mean to you.
@Floptart7 ай бұрын
@@homelander7742 Most of my views would be considered "right-wing" by most leftists. I didn't make the political climate what it is. All you have to do is say something like "Why did BLM spend their money on political campaigns and mansions instead of on inner cities?" and most people fly off the handle and revert to labeling you the horrid "r" word instead of providing an actual retort.
@winnieblue96267 ай бұрын
@@Floptart It's not that you've even changed. It's the general leftist ideology has shifted so away from it what it used to be that you can't relate to it anymore.

Thank you, i used to paint my nails black to get the ladies to compliment it which they do, but now its more to piss off anti woke people. Once again me being in the middle proves to be the sensible place to be. Agree with some woke and some non woke stances, just things that make sense to me. I am against people who take themselves to seriously and i feel the extreme political spectrums all do that.

Slightly playing devils advocate, if you’ve ever lived in the same cultural region that Finn does(The hyper liberal Puget Sound) you’d understand why he’s wary and cautiously critical of wokeness. I say this as a pretty damn liberal person, by there are sections of the west coast that are very much vacuums of extreme thought and social experiments.
@stevenramirez11797 ай бұрын
Woke means different things depending on what you want it to mean. It’s always meant that you don’t accept the status quo which used to be racism, homophobia transphobia, sexism, etc. Now conservative extremists use woke to describe liberal extremists.. if someone calls you woke now they just mean that they are racist and homophobic, trans phobic probably religious so on. I collect firearms, fish/hunt, train fighters and my morality is relatively conservative for modern society but I’ll always be considered woke because I don’t hate people based on race, religion, sexuality, gender etc. None of those things determine whether or not you are a good person so I refuse to judge people for them.

"I have no principles and simply move with the wind toward whatever is most popular or the least annoying" is basically your position. The fabled "enlightened centrist," Finn Mckenty, whose worldview is essentially a mix of marketing textbooks and Joe Rogan's podcast. Please keep lecturing us, it's not annoying at all. Maybe tell us about all those movements the enlightened centrists have won throughout history? Depending on how you frame that issue, there are basically none. There have been and always will be "teams," whether you like it or not, and one of those teams will always emerge the winner. Actual critical thinking should lead you to principled positions or you're doing it wrong. Once you have principles you inevitably find yourself on a side(s.) The whole "enlightened centrist" thing is a meme that disingenuous people use to toe some imaginary line in order to try and please everyone. This is you, Finn. It's probably also why so many people react negatively to you, considering all the trolling and strong positions you take while simultaneously getting annoyed by people who are trolling and taking strong positions on things. I think you should avoid politically charged topics, be yourself, and stop with the smug lectures. I enjoy your videos and will continue to watch, regardless.

I agree, I think most woke people have no idea why they think the way they do and the same goes for most anti woke people. They are just happy to be apart of something and don't really care if they are right or wrong it just makes them feel like they belong. People care more about being accepted by groups than being educated. It is hard and scary to think for yourself because it can challenge what you believe in, and that can be uncomfortable and scary, and who wants uncomfortable.
