So, I realized something about Crickey. He’s meant to be lucky, yet he’s the whole reason Mulan messed up with the Matchmaker. But if you think about it, if Mulan had done well and been married, she would’ve been absolutely miserable. Because Crickey messed it up, she went into battle, won the war, and got real happiness. A *very* lucky bug.

The hair cutting scene is definitely something for western audiences, where it's generally seen to be feminine if you have long hair. I think you're absolutely right about accuracy vs heart though. It's obviously bad to be flagrantly wrong about the setting you're trying to appropriate for your story, but I'd rather someone put genuine care into a good story with mistakes than whatever Mulan 2020 was going for.

I feel that some of these inaccuracies are actually the animators and writers using shorthand to reach their audience better. For example, it’ll be far easier for the standard Western audience to understand “Now all of China knows you’re here!” Rather than “now all of the dynasty knows you’re here!” Sometimes, shorthand does absolutely need to win over accuracy.
@JacobPDeIiNoNi
@JacobPDeIiNoNi Жыл бұрын
Same for the hair cutting scene, again for a standard Western audience shorter hair is typically associated with masculinity so her cutting her hair makes it easier for people to understand what is going on even if from a historical standpoint it doesn't make sense. Of course the point of the video is mostly just to point out the inaccuracies so you know about them, I don't think she's trying to say that all of them are inherently flawed.

There's something that is nice in the animated movie is that you can feel they did quite a bit of research on Chinese history and yeah it may not be super accurate but I feel like you can feel the artistic team's enthusiasm for its visual elements, and little details. It feels more like a homage than a ripoff.
@marion9921

I feel like most Chinese people are not super picky about historical accuracy since the historical c-dramas or even fiction (as you mentionned, historical fanfic) are kind of all over the place as well, as my dad loves to point out. I think it would be sort of hypocritical to say only Chinese people are allowed to have fun with that, which is why Mulan 1998 feels quite okay. The reason why the 2020 version doesn't feel that way is also because the chinses elements in the story feel more like a constraints to the creator who end up kind of throwing a bunch of "Chinese" stuff randomly into a story rather than having fun exploring these elements.

Medieval European peasants clearly ate nothing but potatoes, being so poor and all. Yeah, it's easy to think that, considering the staple food it is today. It's hard to imagine Europe without potatoes. The introduction of the potato has probably saved Europe from countless famines (though it also caused some in Ireland). This is why people who cry "cultural appropriation" are idiots. They likely don't know what truly originated in their own country. They probably embrace many traditions and food stuffs that were imported anywhere from multi-millenias to less than a century ago.

@@KaptenN 2 things 1. The famine in Ireland wasn't caused solely by the collapse of the potato crop by blight. It's more accurately akin to a genocide than a famine, because England had been taking and shipping every other crop being grown and exporting them forcing the population to have nothing to eat. 2. "Muh cultural appropriation" Lol shut the hell up. Don't come onto my post and complain about cultural appropriation to a literal Native. Eating an introduced crop and making new dishes of your own of it isn't the same as literally stealing our cultural practices to feel trendy or spiritual, and our regalia as poorly made costumes. Hello from Rwanda. Just an interesting note, but we have a story here about a girl called Ndabaga. It goes pretty much the same as Mulan. Her father is in the army and you could only leave if a son or brother came to relieve you. He only has a daughter, so she cuts off her breasts and learns to fight in order to take his place. She beats the men at everything and some of them become jealous. Eventually, one of them discovers that she is a girl and tells the king, who falls in love with her for her dedication to her father, marries her, and decrees that anyone who does not have a son to replace them can go home.

I think the Chinese stereotype(and larger Asian stereotype too) of "honor" is actually from us immigrant families. My grandparents grew up in China and immigrated into the US just before my father was born. "Honor" was sorta an emphasized thing, though we never _really_ said "honor" per se. As a kid I definitely explained things to my friends just as the "honor" thing since it conveyed 90% of what it needed to much easier than explaining that I'm terrified of dissapointing the legacy of my grandfather(who passed before I was born) and his success in America.

Also the idea that there's an east asian steroetype is also spurious. It took me until right now to realize that having the guy soldiers dress up in drag at the end was a bit more than a "man in a dress" joke. Like, this is a movie about a person pretending to be a sex/gender they're not in order to play a hero role how did I not see that they are paralleling Mulan's story by having her friends break in as concubines and help save the day from a traditionally feminine role *face palm* I also love how Mulan has to train and learn to use her strengths and talents as opposed to just being wicked strong from the start. It plagues both male and female hero stories when the main character has no development and is just instantly good and the best at everything. Mulan became an even stronger "strong female character" to me as a little girl because she didn't naturally have a conan the barbarian level of physical strength in order for her to be a great warrior (in fact, she was appropriately the weakest one at the beginning and the only one Shang Li sent home for being such a wimp). She developed her skills with training and determination but what sets her apart is her wits. She did use "strength" and "discipline" to climb the pole like Shang Li said she would need to, but in the end it was her problem solving ability that got her to the top. She likely never would have been able to climb it with brute strength alone, but she didn't need to because physical power (traditionally masculine trait) isn't the only way you can excel. Before I thought the message of this movie was "girls can be just as good as guys if they try hard enough" but now im realizing a more appropriate theme is "Strength in femininity". Realizing this now, I see the true climax of the film being the moment when Mulan stops the sword with her fan. To me, this was "strength in femininity" symbolized.

Actually, it goes even deeper than that. The usual trivia fact that there are no songs in the movie after Girl Worth Fighting For? Only mostly true. So strength in femininity may be a little too much, but it sure does send the message that girls can use wit and determination to achieve even better results. Brute strength is not the most important factor. Sure, the movie mainly wants to adress women with this message, but it basically appllies to anyone who may not have a physical advantage.

Nobody said problem-solving is a female-exclusive trait but the fact she did use innate abilities to accomplish her goals rather than trying to be like the boys, showed that she could be strong (not physical) and feminine at the same time, that femininity and strength are not mutually exclusive, because even though she was dressed like a man, she never was naturally masculine or wanted to be a man, it was due her circumstances. That's what it means the expression since a lot of movies and marketing always try to masculinize female characters to convey strength and competence, sort of "be more like men to be strong, smart, this or that..."

One thing I would change in Mulan (1998) is Mushu's ending. I think it would have really cemented his character development if the Ancestors offered him a guardianship position after Mulan's victory, but he chose to turn it down, because he found satisfaction in being Mulan's friend. That would show true humility on his part.

9:35 If memory serves me correctly, some nobles were permitted to have dragon symbols so long as they have 4 toes. The five toed dragons are for the emperor, the four toed ones for nobles, and three toed ones for anyone else permitted to have a dragon symbol. Since the imperial dragon has five toes, the ones with four or three toes are considered fake dragons. Mushu in this cartoon movie has four toes.

Shan-Yu's name essentially being Yams just brightened my morning honestly! I also had no idea him and his army were suppose to represent a certain race, as I kid I always thought he was some ghoul and not human due to his eyes and strength; also his coldness. I like that even though not all of it's accurate it's still mostly tasteful or was done a specific way so chinese audience could still interpret it (and a few western things so the west didn't feel totally lost the entire time, the breakfast smile made me smile as a kid because tht's such a goofy thing to do here in the west); like the writing being a modern modern chinese form instead of the kind you'd see back then. Really interesting to get some insight on the shrine though! As a kid even I thought it was a bit odd even though I didn't really know the culture. Most inaccuries were either an overlook, could be overlooked/unnoticed, or were simply done for comedic effect which gave the movie a lot of the charm people loved it for

i remember having an argument with somebody once about the movie hercules because it didn't follow the actual myth and had too many historical inaccuracies but like, its a great movie that was made for kids. I think it hercules' original myth he had to kill his own father or something (unless im thinking of oedipus but a lot of them killed their dads in those stories ok) and they couldn't have shown that, but it was still obvious that it was ancient greece, and the story still worked. in my opinion you're right- historical accuracy in these movies is cool to see and a fun little easter egg if you know the history involved, and it should be at least somewhat culturally accurate, but the main purpose of a movie is to tell a good story and entertain the audience.

It is interesting that at a time when researching all this was much more difficult (and people in general were less aware of respecting other cultures) most of the historical errors in the film are related to sacrifices made to make the narrative more interesting or limitations in the animation

Simplicity in art also has value. People don't look down on cave paintings just because they aren't Renaissance level of layered. In some ways, conveying something with as few brush strokes as possible is harder than oil painting.

So I hope this doesn't get buried. Because two of my animation professors worked on the original Mulan. Specifically in the special effects department. The intro sequence of the ink painting was originally going to be Chinese shadow puppetry briefly explaining the ballad and setting the scene. They were trying to figure out a way to make the puppets slowly come in and out of focus as they were "brought against" the rice paper and then taken back. Unfortunately, this research was costing too much, and they still had a lot of other effects to make, so the intro was switched to the one in the movie. Some other fun facts: All of the flags are 3D animated. My professor had a coworker run up and down the hallway with a giant flag to study how it moved. The cricket cage and comb are also 3D. Basically anything that looks like it would be a PAIN to animate by hand was done in 3D. This also includes the ever-famous "Hun Charge" scene. This movie was created primarily by the now defunct Orlando Studio in Florida. This studio would go on to make Lilo and Stitch.

Fun fact I bet you didn’t notice: Mulan is ambidextrous. In the beginning of the movie she uses her left hand to write but later when she uses a sword she uses her right hand
@ThisIsAigle
@ThisIsAigle 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, but maybe no. There's different types of ambidexterity. For instance, I can do many things with both hands (to a relative degree of equality), but I have a preference for my right hand for common tasks like writing, while when I actively participated in martial arts, I fought southpaw, medically I am considered "Right Dominant Ambidextrous", meaning i instinctively do many tasks with my right hand dominant (and in my specific case, despite being capable of either hand), while doing specific tasks with my left hand dominant. Given that Mulan displays the opposite inclination, writing left, and fighting standard, she is probably a "Left Dominant Ambidextrous". Both RDA and LDA are capable of being true ambidextrous, but neither require it. If you're RDA or LDA you don't necessarily have the ability to do everything ambi, but at a minimum do certain specific tasks with a preference opposite of your dominant side. So she could be a true ambi, or she could just fight standard and do everything else left handed, and be the bare minimum of an LDA.

@David Van Loo So Antifa believe in things like Religion, Equal rights, and poor people? Man, I wish they believe those things when they destroy black people's neighborhoods while praising the extremely Wealthy class like CELEBRITIES as the "oppessed minority" while actual poor brown people get screwed over by Antifa's actions. Or how chanting "F&#K Jesus" somehow helps the poor class, despite 90% of of the poor are hardcore Christians. P.S. I ain't white, before calling me "uncle Tom", Uncle Tom legitimately helped the poor and the black community more then Antifa as a whole. I'm so glad Antifa cared for minorities like us.... by.. ransacking our poor neighborhoods. Yep, that's shows you guys cared so much about us.
@hrtly64
@hrtly64 3 жыл бұрын
@@princeofdarkness4711 Yes, there are antifa who are religious. I'm pretty sure all antifa support equal rights, and most of them are poor. Most antifa gatherings are to protest fascist gatherings, and remain peaceful until fascists incite violence. I know quite a few antifa and I have never seen any of them say that being a celebrity makes someone oppressed, perhaps they have said that a member from an oppressed minority became a celebrity but that doesn't have the same meaning as what you're saying. What poor brown people are getting screwed over by antifa? Do you have a source for this? I agree chanting "fuck jesus" is unproductive, but many christians are in positions of power and use their influence to further fascist causes so there in likely a lot of resentment there (and no, I don't think all christians are fascists, or that all fascists are christians, just that those who are like to abuse their power). Do you have a source for the "90% of the poor are hardcore christians"? Antifa do care for minorities, so I'm not sure what your point is there.

Can we also talk about how the transition from "A Girl Worth Fighting For" to the scene of the ruined village where they find the little girl's doll, is an amazing way to show the soldiers transitioning from boys to men? Let me explain: through "A Girl Worth Fighting For", they're basically singing about how they're fighting for the potential of getting a girl, of getting a reward basically. But in the next scene, they get their actual girl worth fighting for; the little girl who was presumably killed in the attack. They are no longer fighting for a potential reward; they are fighting for the innocent lives that were lost there, and fighting so that no more civilians will have to die

When ShuanYu takes the doll, my child self said "ok, he's probably going to invade a village", but I didn't realize they would invade and kill every single villager they found there. When I saw the doll again, my child's heart broke into pieces with the thought of someone around my age being so brutally killed. I think this was one of the first movies that taught me how I should be wary of the world.

In regards to the ink brush paintings, it took a lot of skill, focus, and practice to not have any errors, which is an incredible skill. And the paintings are beautiful, one of my favorite art styles. The minimalism of it captures so much subtle detail without making it distracting.
