And now the second part of my Eternals video. I think this part contains more of the things people didn't like? I've heard a lot of "act 1 and 2 were good, but 3 falls apart." So let's take a look! Here's everything right with Eternals!

I’m really glad the MCU managed to redeem its speedster-execution with Makkari. Quicksilver isn’t horrible by any means, but his powers are portrayed in a bit of a boring way, especially compared to X-Men Quicksilver whose powers always look and feel SO cool. So the fact they did well with Makkari here is awesome.

@@swanpride Not yet anyways. Since both AoS and the MCU did now independently established the concept of a Multiverse, so there's still a chance for having a great reunion/crossover. Just have the MCU universe where Coulson died to Loki's cepter, and the AoS universe where he gor revived. If you think about, the entire plot of AoS hangs on him being alive. The Clairvoyant subplot to the Hydra uprising exists because Garett was after the secret to his revival, Skye/Daisy/Quake only became who she is because Coulson picked her up and brought her into SHIELD, and from Season 2 onwards, he is the root and center for pretty much everything. Yes I have given this way to many thoughts.

@@doomse150 Frankly, my "trick" so to speak is just ignore what the writers said, because if you go by the time frame mentioned in the show (and assume that the whole "something is happening in New York" doesn't refer to Thanos after all), the finale of AoS is set shortly before the snap. Problem solved.

@@swanpride I still like the parallel universe idea better, because it would still feel odd to have another set of heroes from "MCU-earth" whose entire story (and stuff like the inhuman arc would've definitely made some noise) somehow had 0 overlap with the MCU stories for the entire time. And the "where were you when X happened?" question (going both ways) would be way harder to answer. The two worlds just diverged so much when MCU phase 3 and AoS season 4 started, that it to me seems impossible to have them run concurrently in the same universe without it feeling off in some way.

Honestly, out of all the Eternals, I can't really see him having much use in the "original" mission of protecting mankind from Deviants. 12:50 This is also true of Captain Marvel. I understand why they structured it how they did, but very little Carol does in the first half really makes sense until the 2nd viewing, when you have the full context on what's been done to her. I think Brie Larson's performance is unfairly criticized mostly because of that too. Maybe it's possible for an MCU movie to be too clever for its own good?
@villehankipohja7293

Usually in movies expressions are overacted (most of the time intentionally). Like when someone is lying, you can clearly see from their face that they are lying (and you wonder how nobody figures out that they are, in fact, lying). Larson acted how a normal person would act. She doesn't trust Fury, so she doesn't (overtly) show how she's feeling. But since people have been accustomed to the overacted expressions, her realistic portrayal seems "muted" or "underacted" to them. For the record, Larson's version is better in my opinion.
@TaurielTheElf
@TaurielTheElf 2 жыл бұрын
@@villehankipohja7293 Exactly what I'm thinking as well. And the whole "Stop being emotional" thing that people criticise the most. Sadness isn't the only emotion that can cloud people's judgements. We see from the first fight scene that Carol acts more on impulse on a "kill now, think later" kind of mentality. The whole point of other characters telling her that was to get her to think before she acts, to make plans, to not rely solely on her powers. And that's, in the end, Captain Marvel's biggest weakness: she's impulsive. We saw this in Endgame, too. Yes, she destroyed Thanos' ship and saved the heroes, but she also lost the Gauntlet in the fight because she flew straight towards Scott's van, giving away the plan to the enemies. If she would have stopped for a minute and talked with the other heroes and made a solid plan instead of charging straight into the battle, the conflict would have ended differently and maybe Tony would have survived. Instead, people complained about the "lack of acting" because they would have expected her to cry or be sad all the time, when anger is an emotion too.

Sadly, the fans don’t always appreciate clever. Some things have to be direct and obvious or it gets underrated. I think we observed this with the Disney+ shows. The wham bam action, violence, explosions are the only things people like and then MCU becomes formulaic for giving people the only things they seem to want and not stretching any new boundaries

There are portions of the Captain Marvel movie that I don't like, but it wasn't the acting or the overall plot. I really liked Larson's acting (her microexpressions are just fantastic!). What I didn't like was the fact that it felt like they couldn't figure out who their audience was suppose to be. Was it kids that needed to have the Tesseract's location explained to them in excruciating, boring detail no less than 4 times? Kids who needed the jokes to be laid out so plainly, so barely that they were boring? Or was the audience suppose to be adults, who'd pick up on the fact that Carol in the early part of the movie was playing the part of a space Nazi, so of course she was going to be an uncaring jerk to people on the train? Adults who'd notice her subtle expressions of mistrust, fear, and anger, and then watch her grow to become caring, warmer, and (most especially) more self confident? They tried to do both, and the movie suffered greatly for it. It ended up neither an engaging, overdone kid's movie (a good example of a well made Marvel movie for kids is Thor: Ragnarok), nor a subtle, emotional adult's with well placed dramatic scenes cutting through the comedy. Some parts were too subtle for the kids and the incels, some parts were too irritatingly trope-ish and "played straight" for adults. The result was subpar. This is not the only Marvel movie to make this mistake, but it really showed in this one.

It can be done, see any heist movie ever, but it's hard and you go in with the understanding like 2/3rd of the cast are one note with at most one big scene for them. Heck I think even the OG Thor movie did it better with their cast of gods, but again by sidelining 2/3rd of that cast as basically background nobodies. The problem here was 10 folks were included and while obviously Cersi and Ikaris were the center, too much screen real estate was given to the others and so everyone starved...nevermind the "villain." So yeah a TV show was probably needed. And not the truncated six eps Marvel has been doing but like the 13 ep Netflix model for their MCU properties. This is a film that has definitely stuck for me. It has real soul; and the fact that it was so divisive is indicative to me of the fact that Marvel and Zhao did a good thing: that they were prepared to try something new, to not stick to the tried and tested formula - which they could've done, and very well at that, but would've just been criticised for. Either way, they couldn't win, so fair play to them for aiming for the stars. Also: I agree, Gemma Chan's Sersi is divinely elegant in this. Funny to watch her performance in Captain Marvel to see how much less nuanced that role was! (also under the blue makeup that did no-one any favours). Also also, I love that the cast got to keep their shape (apart from Nanjiani, but even that is a fascinating story), and, in particular, their accents. I love that there is no attempt to explain their identities, one with her Latin accent, the other with his Scottish accent, and Druig with his deadpan Irish accent. I actually really liked this movie. I only watched it recently in preparation for Thor but I’m really glad I did. I also feel inclined to defend Kingo here, mainly cos I love Kumail… and Kingo tbh. I felt that Kingo was the youngest after Sprite, seeing how he looks up to Icarus, squares up to Druig and likes to banter with Sprite. Also, the way he likes to show off when fighting and becoming a movie star speaks of a guy who feels like he has a lot to prove, similar to a younger sibling. What’s also apparent is that he’s willing to put himself in danger for the sake of his family. He covers Sprite when the deviant attacks, he was willing to take a blast from Icarus in order to protect Makari and confronted Icarus right after. When he decides to step out, I understood where it was coming from. It wasn’t just the fact that he didn’t want to hurt any of his family but it was also because he didn’t fully believe in either side. So far he was willing to go along for the sake of family, but when his family started to tear apart, he lost his main motivation. He might have hurt them by walking away, but he was honest and stood by his beliefs, which took courage in of itself. It wasn’t the perfect solution but, like you said, he has flaws but dishonesty is not one of his flaws.

Well, outside of fascists stoking hatred against them for political gain, but it'd be really hard to justify why *just* Mutants.

This was a perfect analysis. And I liked the movie on the first watch, but on the second watch it got even better (I enjoyed the second viewing way more than No Way Home's second and last viewing). I don't think a series was extremely necessary, the movie would have been excellent with just an extended cut (3h long for example, don't need to do a 4h cut). But I would have loved more "historic" scenes. If they include more of them in future projects (even if they're not from an Eternals movie, maybe include some scene in another movie or show), I'll be happy.

Honestly I really love this movie for a variety of reasons. For one it is an interesting take that there's no clearcut good or bad guys here and in the end you can't even fully tell if what they did was the right move since its fundamentally killing a newborn. Not to mention despite it being a bit underdeveloped you can still feel the history and like these guys have been around since the dawn of human life. They also just do a great job portraying things in this movie. Everything with the Celestials is shot in such a way as to communicate the genuinely massive scale they work on, and when its very common in movies to portray big things in a way that doesn't communicate how big they are that is an impressive feat. Also Makari's super speed is really well done since while I enjoy the "show everything in slow mo" choice for speedsters I do think just making them move quick enough that you can barely notice them is better. Plus it toned down the MCU humor a bit which is good bc this story needs to be largely played seriously

I feel like a lot of movies are better with multiple viewings, and that's not a bad thing. Rewatching Eternals with everyone's motivations and secrets revealed hits differently, the same way rewatching Encanto with the knowledge of that generational trauma does. It adds new layers to the characters and lets you go back to explore them as individuals.

I understand why people disliked this movie, as it wasn't the typical Marvel movie, but that's part of the reason I enjoyed it. Nobody is purely good or evil, everyone is just trying to do what they think is right in the end. I loved the long take of Ikaris being attacked by the Devient, just showing how much of a weapon he is, shooting his eye lasers at random trying to escape. Plus the scene where Druig just drops Sprite with a rock is, hands down, the funniest scene I've ever seen in a Marvel movie.

I kinda agree that Eternals should be a show but I don’t dislike that it starts with a movie. 2.5 hours to test the waters is pretty good, then turning the next half of the saga into a show would totally work. You now know you want to explore this, the kind of exploration that you want and where you might want to focus, not just the look at their affect on history but the current day things to have to deal with, like a god sticking out of the planet. I don’t think it’d be amiss to say movie-series-movie, give us the introduction, the closer look, then the cinematic conclusion to the tale

I watched the movie half asleep, and again the next day bc I didn’t remember anything from it, started watching it again and realized I subconsciously watched/remembered it, and ended up loving it. One thing I loved is everyone was very human despite some of them not getting much screen time to be fleshed out (and them all being space robots). I ended up relating to basically all the eternals (except the speedster), some in ways I’m not sure were intentional or not. I was sad it was over not because it was movie of the century or anything, but because I wanted more time with these characters

I agree with the multiple viewings thing. My dad and I both had the same thought after we first watched it. The movie felt somehow both too rushed and too slow for a movie. But we did enjoy it. And nothing will ever top seeing his dog Murphy watched the movie with us and react to what was happening on screen lol. Like when the first Deviant was shown at the very beginning, Murphy was watching the screen and actually jumped a little at it before leaning forward like he was getting into it. So now we say Eternals is Murphy's favorite movie. So that's a pupper win from me. Also, I'm pretty sure Murphy's favorite character was Druig. He seemed to pay most attention whenever Druig was on screen.

I loved this movie! I loved the excess universe-building this movie brought in, and I saw it as a the Eternals defying their function to serve a far nobler purpose. I live for those kinds of movies; the kind where people realize their actions and defy the authority they've been obeying for so long. I saw it as a all of them having a redemption arc; they walked away from fighting the Deviants and live their own lives and then come back into the fold as a means for redemption. I should watch it again, because I thoroughly enjoyed the movie every step of the way.

The thing about icarus flying into the sun being on the nose. It's actually ironic when compared to the original story. With the wax wings Icarus and his father couldn't fly to close to the sun, lest the wings melt. However if they flew to low the sea spray would way their wings down and they would drown. It's a story warning against both ambition and complacency. Unlike others who had found a life outside the mission, Icarus was complacent with the mission. Falling into the metaphorical ocean but flying into the actual sun, amazing

The Ikaris of the greek mythology didn't die because of the sun exactly. He flew too close to it, the wax on his wings melted, he lost his "ability to fly" and then drowned. So I mean, it's not impossible that Ikaris is still alive. Also I feel like Eternals can only die when they get killed by deviants or other eternals (or celestials). That would make sense since they can't age and are described as immortal. Sure the sun seems "powerful", but I think it's more plausible that they can only die due to higher institutions, if that makes sense. But hey, I'm just making stuff up

At this moment in time I've only seen Eternals two times, maybe two and a half if I count these two vids, it was in the theater and when it came out on Blu Ray. It has a cloud hanging over it, it was the first movie MCU movie I watched after my mom passed, Shang Chi being her last. Even watching these vids I felt that cloud, she was there with me since Iron Man and we've been fans since. I'm sorry, I felt like had to share that, get it out somewhere. Despite the cloud I did enjoy Eternals because it really felt like Marvel was taking a risk, a historical epic that was light on the jokes and heavy on the dialogue. The visuals were outstanding, the music was awesome, and the design was on point. It felt like for the first time Feige let the director, Chloe Zhao, have free reign over the project; I hope to see more of that in the future but based on the reception and box office, he might dial back the freedom. But if there's one criticism i agree with, it's that it should've been a miniseries; the stories and character development could've been fleshed out more, especially with Phastos going from giving up on humans to suddenly having a family. For better or for worse Eternals will still be remembered, heck maybe down the line it's reputation might improve, it happened for Psycho and The Thing.

this movie was just SO good. i can also 100% agree that it would’ve been better as a series. lots of people complain how it felt rushed, and maybe that’s true. a series wouldve given viewers the opportunity to see more of each character in a longer amount of time. Eternals was filled with outstanding cgi, interesting characters, and incredible cinematography. people who just shit on eternals try so hard to be different. it’s embarrassing asff💀 not every marvel movie has to be the same.

Commented it on the part 1 video but as his death is actually covered here, I want to say Gilgamesh's death is horribly brutal and affecting in a way the MCU doesn't really trade in usually. It's one of the few I feel has much weight to it outside of Stark's, and that one was being telegraphed since the first Avengers. Zhao managed it with half a movie here.
