My theory is that it's because Steven is half-diamond. The surge of power probably causes something to happen in the fusion, resulting in that explosion. It's just a wild guess, but it seems plausible to me. Not just that, but explosions in fusions only happened when it was Steven that fused with someone. So yeah.

3:59 To be fair, when two Gems want to fuse, they don't necessarily need to dance, they can synchronize their minds aswell. At that moment, Ocean Jasper wanted to escape, and Jasper wanted her to escape as well, they were synchronized on something. To prove it, we can take a example on Bluebird episode, Aquamarine and Eyeball are unable to even synchronize at all, but only when they both agree on how much they hate Steven, that leads to an fusion, since their minds were synchronized.

5:30 this section could be explained by the fact that other corrupted gems were made like that because of diamonds: they turned instantly because diamonds are extremely powerful and all that. Jasper meanwhile got corrupted because she fused witha corrupted gem and inherited the "disease" which made it spread slower.

Smokey Quartz is probably my favorite fusion in the show (second being Sunstone, the fourth wall and safety stuff makes me laugh). Smokey’s whole aesthetic, I actually really like the colors. The MUSIC, holy, it’s so nice and iconic to hear when Smokey pops up. The similarities behind Steven and Amethyst leading up to the fusion, it really made it *feel* like a fusion more than a lot of others who feel kinda like making a whole new different character. I really love smokey’s voice, it’s super fun to listen to, and Smokey’s hair is on point. Also, the triple Yo-yo grapple hook is such an awesome weapon. And finally, it’s a point people usually hate, but I really like Smokey’s third arm how it rotates with the second. It never does anything major but I love the thought in how it’s used, like when she shakes her own hand and rotates for the second and third hand, or for her third appearance when she fights that flower gem when she bubbles it, even down to how she holds the yo-yo usually. Idk, personally really love Smokey.

One of my favourites is Opal. She's icon her theme is heavenly and her design is also super cool! I also like to see that she appears more and more as the seasons go on indicating that Amethyst's and Pearl's relationship gets better over time and that also shows that they need less time to synchronise each time. But Smokey is my other favourite as well.

I personally feel like Jasper as a whole is a bit of an undeveloped character, this episode as well as when she first triggered Amethyst into trying to become better felt more than Jailbreak to me. The dynamic of "Character is evil" never felt right with Jasper. Below in some dialogue, you could say she has a bit of a superiority complex to be above other Gems. As demonstrated with the Rubies trying to pamper "her" (Amethyst's shapeshift at the time) by taking her to the moon willingly, being generally nice and happy of her presence, and offering her a ride back to Earth. The lines of how she felt right before poofing really stuck to me. She's expressing how she feels of Rose, how she doesn't even refer to Peridot as herself, rather "this one" being stripped of everything she was. She believes she's better, but what for? In the end, she's only an extra soldier who is admired by those she believes to be of less value. Considering fusion only as a tactic to defeat those she's not strong enough for, and even going as far as using corrupted Gems she believes to be useless just to have any power over those she wants to best. She wants to be above. Without mentioning how she came out in Future, I would say they've really missed it with her. Trying to paint her differently in certain episodes such as "Alone at Sea". People for a long time have been arguing on which side is the abuser. She believes what she does is normal, and to a sense, she has never done nothing more to Lapis. Hell, all they really did to each other is Jasper putting her in jail and trying to negotiate into fusing, she never tried to double-cross her, even her negotiation was clear to the point and exactly what she wanted. Jasper instead got tricked by Lapis due to prisonment. Jasper is... somewhat one of the few in the show whose character stays the way its meant to be.

Something to point out is how the Beta Kindergarten is treated by various gems. Peridot looks down on it as shoddy work, and that's after a lot of work to abandon the Homeworld mindset where you're either perfect or defective (particularly in how it affects her). Amethyst also identifies with the "weird holes" in the Beta Kindergarten, highlighting that a number of Beta Kindergarten gems were off-colour. This is compounded by Holly Blue Agate in "That Will Be All", where she refers to "hideous, off-colour Betas". This obviously references the two obviously off-colour Beta Kindergarten gems Skinny Jasper and Carnelian, but the way she refers to them as "betas" implies a disdain for all Beta Kindergarten gems. The Beta Kindergarten obviously has a lot of stigma attached to it on top of the stigma towards Earth in general. You can argue for an interpretation that all Beta Kindergarten gems are seen as off-colour by Homeworld. We hear of a Cyanite colony later on, implying that most colonies typically only produce one kind of gem, or at least only one varietal. So, being a Jasper is inherently off-colour, but Blue lets them slide because of her sentiments towards Pink and Yellow lets Jasper slide because she's otherwise perfect. So, Jasper would be under a LOT of pressure to try and do everything perfectly in addition to resenting Rose for tainting her world and likely holding some feelings of inadequacy for not being able to stop Rose from "shattering" Pink Diamond. Losing to Garnet is the first crack in her facade. Jasper is quick to drop Homeworld's ideals and fuse with Lapis just to try and beat them. Jasper staying with Lapis as Malachite could be seen as Jasper letting herself be punished for failing to live up to the standards of Homeworld. She wants the power of Malachite, sure, but she's willing to put up with so much torture from Lapis for it. Then Malachite loses, Jasper is separated from Lapis, and what does Jasper do? Try to find Lapis and go right back to being tortured. She's enamoured by the power of Malachite, even though Lapis points out how bad it was, both for Jasper and for her. When Lapis rejects Jasper, she's enraged in a way that we only see again when she's literally losing her mind. Lapis' rejection is more confirmation to Jasper that she's not good enough, so she blames Steven and tries to kill him. From there, Jasper decides to build her own army to address her original inadequacy and finally defeat Rose Quartz. Then Smoky takes that from her, too, utterly humiliating Jasper and not even taking the fight seriously. In sheer desperation, Jasper goes to try and release the corrupted Ocean Jasper, which mixes with Ocean Jasper's own desperation and thus forms Zebra Jasper, but even that fails to earn much more than a one-liner. Jasper de-syncs from Ocean Jasper and the fusion falls apart, which is the straw that breaks the camel's back, that she's not even good enough for this mindless, shameful husk of a Quartz. This causes the seed of corruption planted by fusing with Ocean Jasper to take root. I really wish they found a one-time corruption cure for Jasper, she really deserved more screen time.

3:58 it's really interesting for me to see a different point of view about what happens in this part Cause when i watched it the first time, i thought about it more or less about jasper brute-forcing her way into a fusion. I kind of connected the dots in my mind that when she was malachite she was constantly battling with lapis and eventually managed to beat her and gain control of the fusion herself. So when i see this scene I thought about how she tried to do the same here, it would also make sense about how she is the one controlling it while it lasts, jasper doesn't see fusion as two people synergizing as one, but rather two people on some sense of dominance and submission, she's fused with a gem but she doesn't learn anything about them at all cause she only cared about being stronger and in control. And eventually she can't handle it cause the corrupted gem is a literal beast with very primal instincts who will fight for survival, then they unfuse.

I assume they explode only because “it fits well and is a cool slow reveal” But, to tie it to actual lore… spontaneous combustion fusion. It’s not really “the first time fusing” cause not only did Rainbow Quartz 2.0 or Sunstone blow up, but neither did Garnet. Steg and Smokey both are like BAM instant fusion, no real build up or anything. But like with Jasper x Corrupted Gem, and Garnet, they both were quick but not instant yknow

1:30 my best guess as to why Jasper got hit by Amethyst's whips first thing is because whips are a symbol of status and power on homeworld, often being the weapons of higher ranking gems, who use them to control & discipline their soldiers. I'd have to rewatch the other fights to see if this detail holds up between encounters of Amethyst and Jasper (it probably doesn't) but it's one of my favorite things about Amethyst's weapon.

Idk where i know this from but 5he reason Jasper just stands there for the first two whip attacks is because the whip is the weapon of gems in charge of the soldiers, and whips are used to discipline them(eg:holly blue agate) that is why jaspers first instinct is to cower and not react aggressively Edit:(this is also why peridot feels scared when Steven rolls up the towel, she's a low grade gem and therefore must have been under a general using a whip similar to the towel)

1:47 since the beta kindergarten was rushed, injectors were likely just shoved in, made sure they'd stay upright and... inject. probably barely thought on angles and security, so maybe over the years the injection site had loosened to the point it needed one good donk. also, it's a diamond's shield but it's made of light. glass can let light through really well, so maybe due to it being light with mass it doesn't shatter to it?

Why didn't you mention the most glaring problem with this episode? It's established in Jailbreak that Jasper can survive: A. Being beaten to a pulp by Garnet B. Thrown into a starship generator that _explodes_ C. An entire spaceship half the size of Beach City crashing around her All within the same hour, and the Crystal gems still see her as a serious threat after that, to the point that Lapis "I move the ocean" Lazuli can't do anything (which doesn't make a lot of sense either) But a _single shard of metal_ stabbing her in the gut, and she's down?! What?! And it's not like corruption makes them weaker, considering how resilient some corrupted gems are.

Genuinely my favorite episode of Steven Universe. Yeah it’s got some dumb shit like Jaspers fusion. But the episode is really good in terms of writing and character development. Plus Jasper is a constant threat in this episode (since Jasper is my favorite character I love the amount of screen time she get) Amethyst arc is one of the few in the entire series that was actually really well handled and wasn’t rushed to oblivion. Both Steven is hogging the screen time with the whole Steven only perspective. Peridot gets the final blow to Jasper. Smokey Quartz is a really good character and fusion. And Jaspers monologue at the end was very chilling to listen to, coupled with her corrupted form and the theme that plays (Btw anyone know what that theme is call?) I genuinely love this episode, the only episode that comes consistently close is the episode “Fragments” though that episode was ruined by its terrible ending.
