I've decided to sell it, so we can spend more $$ on the 57 Plymouth. Selling it for $18K OBO (less than I payed for it) and it comes with the correct size BF Goodrich tires, and a new set of Bilstein shocks). Email autoauctionrebuilds@gmail.com if interested.

If that car had a Quadrajet that was well sorted (and I mean you knew how to properly tune the secondary air doors, power piston spring, and choke pull-off), you would never have any problems with its carburetor.

The Pontiac 350 is a good motor. As long as it is converted to electronic ign from points about the only other thing to worry about is the timing chain. Which is why on the old Pontiacs I switch the factory nylon ones to a steel double roller. That one seems to be running really well and no smoke, knocks or ticks. I would take it anywhere.

The only V8 offered in the 68 LeMans is the Pontiac 350. The shifter will tell you what transmission you have. A 2 speed Powerglide will have PRNDL. The 3 speed will have PRND2L or 1 instead of the L. My 67 LeMans had the 2 speed. The GTO came standard with a 400 mated to a 3 speed automatic with a dual gate shifter made by Hurst.

Oh a HUGE WARNING, make sure you run a lead additive or you WILL sink the valves into the heads. This is of course if you don't have the hardened Exhaust valve seats installed on the heads. It will run fine for about 6 months to a year then you'll start to notice excessive noise coming from the valve train as they sink into the heads. You can fix it by changing the valve seats out but if you don't the Exhaust valves will sink. I know I did it to my 69 GTO and my 1974 Trans Am. Also if you run the lower octane you'll need to adjust the Ignition Timing or you'll get pinging in the valves due to per-detonation. This will result in broken stock valve rings, broken piston ring lands and will chamfer your cylinder walls. Been there and done that on my 74 Trans Am. You can fix that by boring out the cylinders and sleeving them. To find out if your valves have started to sink take it to a shop and have them check the valves stem height and run a compression check. Have fun with your Cool Le mans or Tempest. The Tire should be G70 Rally II 14X6 wheels not 15" in wheels. If you put 15" wheels on, it will rub the front fenders and tear them and the fenders up. I recommend the 15" wheels with smaller diameter tires to match the stock tire height for one reason only. It will corner better and not "Push" as much. That is very important in a heavy car. I almost put mine over a cliff in California because the tires were; to high on the front, the weight of the car and, Well I was getting a little aggressive in the mountains for a heavy 60's car. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

The emblems back them were attached with legs in the chrome emblems going through holes in the bodywork, and the emblems were held on by speed nuts or captive fasteners. They didn't use adhesive and the emblems don't all have the same 'pattern' for legs and even some eblems go in different places. For example, some were on the rear quarter, and some were on the fender.

The Lemans 350s can with two barrel Rochesters, That is not a Quadrajet, if it was it would either flood the engine or make it accelerate. That engine puts out about 1800 hp, 255hp gross HP., all you had to do was remove air cleaner. You have turbo350 tranny. two speed were older and not hooked up to 350s. This cars had a leather connector between steering wheel assembly and power steering gizmo. I forgot the name of it. The feel of steering will always be a little vague but the play is cause by the connector. It is designed to break in case of an accident. But can cause an accident if not eventually replaced. ,

Look at it as a GTO tribute car. You could always rebadge it as a LeMans for resale. It's still a nice cruiser. You did good on the price. We had a '69 GTO with 14x6 Rally II wheels. Back then 14" looked fine with those unique looking Pontiac wheel arches. Fun fact: you could actually get a GTO with a chrome front bumper. It still had darker grill with white "GTO" lettering. The tail lights were unique for GTO too. GTO hoods did have nostrils but most were non functioning unless you got Ram Air. It sounds like your secondaries are working fine when you step on it. Great video, thanks.

Cars of this era had a valve in the heater hoses that shut off the flow to the heater core when you changed the temperature from hot to cold. The valve may be stuck open or the cable (some cars had a vacuum controlled valve) to the valve may be stuck or broken. This was the first auto repair I made, fixing the AC in my dads Dodge when I was 14 years old.

looks like a 2spd. powerglide to me. If that engine is a 5.7 liter it is a 350 and not the 389 that comes in a real GTO, plus I've never seen a GTO without the twin hood scoops. Find the numbers on the engine block and it will tell you whether it's a 350 or a 389. I'm betting it's a 350. I don't believe the Holly carb is correct for either the 389 or 350. @@jeffreyrigged There is a Canadian Powerglide that had a dual bolt pattern for the GM engines and the heavy duty internals that were used in the 427 Corvette. Those weren't just made for Chevy engines. From the heavy duty gears and parts inside and the multi-engine bolt pattern, they likely went behind some big engines. I think they were used in Canadian Pontiacs and not Buicks made in Canada. I've seen Chevy 12 bolt rear ends in Buick Skylarks made in Canada, but with 6 cylinder or Buick engines in those with 3 speed automatics.

Would you expect a car for that price to be perfect? Any old car no matter how well restored there's always something to do it. If not something in a couple days, lol. The car appears to have good paint and it appears to be sport Le Mans with bucket seats which is a plus and it's not rusted out. The negatives is a 350 engine and a 2 speed. That kills it for me. Can you not purchase tall profile tires that would fit the 14" rims and increase the height of the vehicle? Maybe you could save buying new rims. Just a thought. I had a 68 Pontiac wagon with a 327 2v, a 2 sp powerglide and never had a problem running 60-65mph all day. Not a power house on take off but I had no issues towing a 2400lbs trailer. Not the best gas mileage but when you figure the 23 gal(or so) tank, it would easily go 400-450 miles if you didn't abuse the passing gear. Like you said, just enjoy the car as is once you get it sitting a little higher and revel in the moments you can get out of it. Blessings!

Nice car! Chevrolet built the Powerglide transmissions. A 68 Tempest Le Mans with 350 came with the two speed M35 Turbine 300 built by Buick - and it is a darn good transmission (a quick reseal would stop the leaks - pump to case gasket, converter seal, speedo cable o ring, vacuum modulator, rear seal, etc). That is what yours is. Rear axle ratio is likely a 2.56. They were not bombs from standstill. GTOs came with a 400 engine and the optional automatic was a M40 turbohydramatic or turbo 400 (beginning in 67 for both 400 engine and turbo 400 and with or without the dual gate shifter). Maunual 3 speed standard manual 4 speed optional. Wheels, caps, and beauty rings are correct as original. All GTOs and Tempests came factory with 14 inch wheels. !5 inch wheels were not available on a Le Mans or GTO until 1973. In 68, bias ply G78 - 14 tires would have been the right tire size for a V8 powered car if I remember right. Your car is actually well optioned - they just didn't have all of the stuff they have now and a lot of things on new cars come standard now to cut production costs (cheaper to build them all the same). V-8, automatic, ps, pb, remote mirror, Rally II wheels, AC, radio, clock, console with floor shift, soft ray glass?, etc. were all extra cost. There were more options available like 8 track, power locks - windows - seats, ride and handling package, lamp group, right side outside rear view mirror (no sport mirrors in 68 - only remote adjustable or manual adjustable) but a lot of cars had a lot less. Power top was standard on the Le Mans.

That 350 and the chrome bumper should have been a big red flag as to the G.T.O. heritage. Just loose the emblems and sell it as the convertible Lemans it is.18 thousand is at the limit of the price point

@@robinluck2922 I know myself that's not a GTO. The tail lights are from a LeMans. The interior is not right in that car either. The GTO and Sport LeMans GT had the same exact interior. @@robinluck2922 I would have been all over that. I had a rare 68 LeMans sport GT in the 70's till 1980 when I sold it like a dumb ass. It was the first GT type. It was classified as the GT 36 in 68 and 69. In 1970 it was labeled as the GT 37. The coupes were all automatics with the Hurst dual gate and the 2 door sedans had 4 speed manual transmissions. Mine was one of 57 coupes made with hide away headlights. All others were fixed headlights. Ram air hood and tach optional also on coupes as I had. I put a 389 SD crate factory warranty replacement motor. It had 500 ponies just from the block output. I had tri power and it rated about 580 plus. I did a qtr mile in 10:70 with it in 1976. It had a 3:90 limited slip posi rear end. The front wheels would leave the ground on a launch. It was a great car. I'll never find another one. I'll settle for a GTO when I start shopping for one next year. I know where there's another 389 SD for it. Lol. Tri power and all. It's in a guys basement and the crank still turns over with a breaker bar. 389's kill 400's on the strip. I've taken down every 421 SD's with mine back then. The car was built in June of 1968 near the end of production that year.

I concur. However, it isn't really a GTO clone. It's a LeMans with GTO badges, the builder didn't even try to make the car look like a real GTO.

Since it's not a GTO the only other size V8 if it is a Tempest or Lemans and original engine is a 326 or a 350. But it would have came 2 barrel single exhaust factory, especially if it came with a powerglide trans. You need to check the engine casing numbers because for Pontiac V8's the 301, 326, 350, 389, 400, 421, 428 and 455 all used the same block and many parts are interchangeable. [edited because I left out an engine size.. too many pontiac lol]. Heck in 68 the GTO had 4 different 400's. The standard 2 or 4 bbl, the H.O., the Ram Air 3 and the Ram Air 4. But ONLY 400's were available factory in 68 for the GTO. However to make it more confusing some dealers had special upgrades and put even bigger engines in them. There was even a Ram Air 5 solid lifter beast but those are more rare then a unicorn. Some Pontiac trivia for ya.

It should have 14” wheels. Get some 225/70 14r on it and it will ride better. It probably has the original 50+ year old springs on it. Replace them and you won’t bottom out. The most amazing thing is the clock still works. Mine is only right twice a day. Sorry about the powerglide and likely 2.75:1 rear gears. It makes these less than aspirational during acceleration.

Trans is a super turbine 300. Similar to a powerglide but not the same. Internally I think they function the same though. And as you discovered, the engine is a 350. They didn't use the ST on the bigger engines. It's a nice, clean LeMans with GTO badges... The stock size for those tires should be a F78-14 which is a 205/75R-14. There's not a lot of 14" tires left but I think cooper makes a 225/70R-14 that's a little wider and just a tiny bit taller - like a 1/4" taller. But the cooper cobra's have that vintage look that would be perfect. A set of 205's work too. That car is a cruiser, not a race car.

I for one do say that if properly tuned and maintained an older car can be and often is justo as if not more reliable than a newer car. They have far less things to go wrong with them and if properly tuned and maintained in the unlikely event something does fail and cause a breakdown it’s easier to trace down the problem, easer and usually cheaper to fix and in many cases an improvised roadside repair can usually get you home whereas a newer car is likely to have a sensor or other electrical problem be the cause of the breakdown and with all the sensors and computers on newer cars it’s not likely that a roadside repair can be improvised to get a sensor bypassed if you can figure out which one it is and an improvised electrical repair would likely screw with a computer whether the ECM or BCM and will still shut you down. My 63 Dodge 440 four door with a 318 Poly is finally about to get its first carb rebuild in its 58 years of life due to leaky gaskets. The brakes are updated to a dual master cylinder with 4 wheel drum brakes, new shocks as it still has the originals. It has some rust on the front fenders but that rust doesn’t affect its reliability. If I was to change the radiator I would have no hesitations about doing a trip from up here in far northeastern Minnesota out to either coast then work my way across to the other coast and just circumnavigate the country with it. It has NEVER left me stranded whereas newer ones have and it gets 22 -24 mpg hwy. even with still having a points ignition it never fails to start even when I had no choice but to drive it in the winter a few years ago and it started without issue at -43 F. I’m fact it’s jumpstarted several newer cars that same day because they wouldn’t start
