Delving into Warhammer 40K was challenging but refreshing at the same time. Thankfully, they do a good job of writing out the small details so you get a generally good idea of how these vehicles are supposed to perform. Since I did the Space Marines for this episode, at some point in the future I will do the Imperial Guard (since their tank designs are even more wacky), and then I'm not sure what to do after that.

Just a few things I thought I would talk about: 1. I am aware that Dreadnoughts are basically new bodies for half-dead Space Marines, that's why I used the word "interred" to describe their placement within the machine. 2. The usage of "machine spirits" is incredibly vague. In some places it is described as something magical that is innately part of the machine, and in some cases it is described as, basically, a limited artificial intelligence. 3. The Land Raider does has a door at the front, but it does indeed have doors on the sides as well. 4. I know that Astartes have heightened reflexes and perception, but the point about work overload still stands. It's not like they have two heads, they can't scan the horizon for threats while looking down the scope to engage other ones. A gunner/commander team will always be more efficient than a single person.

Well if those tanks were supposed to be from WW2, maybe. The problem is that they aren't, and so we get tanks built by a galaxy spanning empire that are inferior to modern ones in most books. Now some being so shitty would make sense in the context of 40k, where blueprints can modify themselves depending on the resources of who is making the product and with many planets being extremely underdeveloped, but instead it seems like the vast majority of them are, regardless of the fact they came from a medieval world or Holy Terra itself. Still some fluff does buff the 40k tanks enough for them to be atleast comparable to modern ones. For example in one book a Leman Russ tank survives nearly unscathed a sideshot from an hypersonic 105 mm APHE, which also sent it flying for a few meters and likely killed the entire crew.

There was a rulebook made same time back that gave stats for adamantine and ceramic armor. Unfortunately, the authors were clearly ignorant of actual tank armor, as the armor values come out to be pretty low by our standards. Similar thing happened in Star Wars. Some author gave stats for Durasteel thinking it was really impressive when in actually the numbers she gave would mean Durasteel is about equal to aluminum.

A few tidbits bc ive been around the block a bit with 40k !!-in 40k any alterations to a STC design could result in execution of the perpetrator, some alterations have been accepted, but altering a design is a risky proposal unless the individual is of very high station.!! -because of this, some designs are flawed but never fixed, and some are modified on the battlefield because of a necessary fix but cannot be modified in the factory. In essence I think the Predator is basically a Bradley, tries to be capable of everything and ends up falling short in every category -pred's armor is thin because its based on a Rhino -if you think about the predator shares the most in common with the Bradley as a whole such as the height-length ratio Land Raider has a front hatch that is specially designed to promote assaulting from the tank right into combat, think a D-Day Higgins boat's drop door with grenade launchers to disorient enemy combatants before troops exit. because of the front hatch and other resources to assist infantry exiting while getting shot at, a turret would take up too much space in the tank for troops to exit out the front. Otherwise I look forward to when/if you review Imperial Guard designs as Guard has more vehicle designs than any other faction(Leman Russ battle tank has over 10 different variants and many other vehicles use the chassis as a core) Imperial Navy Aircraft are also very WWII inspired with some aircraft having very interesting designs.

Having a door on the front means the enemy can shoot into the vehicle, killing troops before they even leave their seats. Any sort of Area-of-effect weapon with good aim would kill all of the passengers at once. The D-Day Higgins boats opened in the front because the front was the closest to the shore. Soldiers are vulnerable when walking through knee high water, so you minimize how far they have to go. The boats were not even fully enclosed, so they didn't provide cover anyway. On land it doesn't take that long to move around a tank. Of course they probably worry about cover less in WH40K than the real world. Space marine infantry are themselves armored, and the imperial guard often values aggression over cunning. The lore depicts the Imperium leaders as extremely conservative, aggressive, and fearful, and it seems these qualities seem to be a large part of why the Imperium is falling apart.

@MrQuantumInc 4 жыл бұрын
@@quentintin1 My point is that there are certain tactics that are more aggressive but less effective. I agree with you in that is how Imperials think, but my reading of the lore suggests that Games Workshop intentionally depicted humanity as choosing impractical and less effective strategies due to their extremely close-minded culture. A complete refusal to innovate being the best example. Though of course the Orks and Chaos are a more extreme example.

They're lobotomized individuals whose punishment extends long past their natural lifespan, used as tools for the war machine and industry. Many of the Imperium's vehicles rely on (Tactical) Cogitators - processors made from living brains - in order to operate their unmanned weaponry. As for the tall silhouette of the tank - we're not talking about tanks operated by humans where the vehicle can be as short as 6'. Only one criticism on this; 'Machine Spirits' are not another term for AI. AI is it's own beast, able to end up going rogue or be corrupted by Chaos worrying quickly. Machine Spirits are essentially actual Spirits that inhabit things to run them. Usually rather basic, but much harder to corrupt. They fulfil the same role, but avoid anti-AI laws that are in place to stop another Man of Iron incident, where AI went rogue across the Imperium and damn near flattened it.

I'm not particularly versed in 40K but I thought machine spirits were just lesser AI and the view of them as something intrinsic to machines, like an actual spirit, a manifestation of the Omnissiah or whatever, was just Mechanicus dogma? The sources I've read often made a point out of the irony of this, granted I've really only read the wiki. The older AIs that fell to Chaos were probably a good deal closer to conscious thought but machine spirits are still AI in the less-than-Astro Boy sense, I figured? Not supernatural, at least.

Northropi there is no definitive answer about machine spirit in the lore, but how it is created suggests that it is to some extend supernatural. Unlike AI or combat programs of mechanicus automatons machine spirit is not programmed, but rather appears during the ritual after the construction of a new vehicle or weapon. During this ritual mechanicus bless the machine and, if all goes right, it gets machine spirit.

Machine spirits are literal spirits that live in the machine ..... Why you ask? Because in Warhammer 40k religious belief is also literally reflected in reality ..... if enough ppl belive something to be one way or the other then beyond the shadow of a doubt the warp will make it a physical reality in real space. The tech. priests of mars have over 10,000 years propagated the universal belief in said machine spirits into almost every imaginable technological faccet of the IoM to the point that yes machine spirits become an actually thing in reality ..... So much so that the people of the Imperium would look at out modern world with a mixture of confusion and likely contempt...... basically the same way we look at the 40k universe as absurd is the same way more or less they would be thinking of us ..... as in to them we are utterly absurd to the extreem.

There are a lot of things that exist in 40k that really don't make sense. AI doesn't exist in the Imperium because it doesn't mean Artificial Intelligence. It means Abominable Intelligence because it always tries to murder organics. Maintenance isn't treated like it is in modern militaries. Technology is viewed with a religious superstition and all manufacturing and maintenance is done by a tech priesthood called the Mechanicus. Simply tensioning the track would involve incense, prayers, and likely a choir singing the praises of the God-Emperor and the Omnissiah. Overall, the technology is somewhat recessed due to the aforementioned superstitions around technology and thousands of years to craziness and war. Space Marines are also effectively invulnerable to common small arms, as they are completely encased in powered armor that is made from similar materials to that of the Predator. There are also a number of threats that have no ballistic weapons, such as some Ork tribes and many Tyranid breeds. As you said at the start of the video, 40k is a dense and incredibly diverse universe. The Imperium, the Eldar, Chaos, the Orks, the Tau, the Tyranids, and the Necrons all have different ways of fighting war and different cultural traits impacting their design and operation.

Tensioning the track would involve the use of sacred lubricant anointed to the joints of the machine, followed by applying the holy tools of guidance to the requisite sigils raised... Then you must keep vigil over these sigils as they are removed and anointed in a separate solution while the tool is used on a new group of the Omnissiah's creations... then once the Ritual of Tensioning is complete, as mandated by the Rituals of Maintenance, you put those sigils back on with the holy tools, more anointing oils and a praise to the Omnissiah for making such a machine. In short, maintenance is done with as much care as we'd do it IRL but with a bit more singing and prayer. Don't talk to the Techpriests though about the Imperial Guard's Field Manuals (or whatever they're called)... those are heretical texts that spoil the sacred machine and displease the machine spirits greatly...

After the Age of Strife ended the Dark Age of Technogy (basically the Golden Era of humanity) by making FTL travel near impossible, most human technique and history was lost, and this was repeated but three centuries after the millennia-long Age of Strife ended with the Horus Heresy, which started the long decline (as in from M31 to M41) of the Imperium of Mankind. Only in the more modern fluff have things started to get better after some of "the good guys" decided to get their shit together and stopped momentarily shooting each other to deal with the bigger threats (like the fact the galaxy was literally sawed in half).

Good video but a few clarifications are needed: 1) Don't confuse the game meta with the lore. In the lore SM chapters have a more or less a large number of tanks whose number vary according to several factors, including their strategies and the fact that some of them are made in an almost artisanal way due the AdMech dogmas on technology. 2) The metals and alloys whom armor are made are stronger than present-day ones, so make them very thicker than you think - especially with Adamantium. 3) Land Raider main hatch is in the front of the tank, which is still a bad choice unless is considered that they carry post-human monk-warriors with power armours or even Terminator Armors which turned into living tanks and all of them can withstand heavy fire far better than a standard IG soldier. 4) Dreads are nothing more than walkers driven by an almost dead SM attached to a life-support system in the form of a coffin, so the 360° cameras would not be so useful. 5) Keep in mind point 1 and 2 for the next video about Imperial Tanks. Also don't make questions about Orks design because they literally built them from scraps, using their weird powers.

They don't have AI. Nobody in the imperium is able or willing to build AI. You could sorta argue that the machine spirits of some *ancient* weapons are AI but nowadays it would not be possible for the admech to make AI even if they were willing to do so. Their complete inability to build AI is the whole reason they keep putting human brains in things as processors. Also I have no idea how you were able to come up with RHA strength estimates for materials which are entirely fictional.

He's probably pulling armor strengths from Lexicanum, who themselves are probably pulling from either Black Library or old Forge World Imperial Armor books. The Machine Spirit is an interesting idea in 40k, because it both could and could not exist as a spiritual entity (depending on the writer and the intent of the piece of lore). Additionally, the AdMech do still make some "dumb" AI, e.g. totally unlearning synthetic crystal computers which are imprinted with the neurological patterns of dogs, to act as IFF and targeting computers for security systems in upper-hive mansions.

I agree the predator isnt the best design and it seems most of the issues stem from it sharing the same chassis of other space marine vehicles namely the Rino APC. This was for simplification in pre-imperium eras but the Imperium is stuck with them due to a reliance on STC (Standered Template Constructs) basically the Imperium knows how to make the factories that make the tank but dont have a full understanding of how to make the tank itself. The Machine Spirit is more of an animalistic emotion emulator that what one would consider a normal A.I. they can stop the vehicle from working if not appeased but only the strongest (namely land raiders) can control weapons. the Imperium Bans full A.I. as they consistently go rogue and attempt to wipe out humanity. AI are considered taboo in the 40k universe. Machine spirits are literal incarnations of the machine's will, and allow vehicles to survive unholy amounts of damage, as well as heal the vehicle and improve it's combat efficiency. It is not unheard of for a tank to survive direct shots and continue operating even though all of it's crew were killed in the blast.

Looking at my 1980s Rogue Trader era Land Raider, I see that it has much better ground clearance, and the side doors are *behind* the side weapon mounts where they ought to be. So when they redesigned it in the 90s they actually made it sillier (apart from putting the previously unprotected side guns into proper armoured sponsons)! :)

I mean, Machine Spirits aren't a thing that's added, Machine Spirits are an innate thing in everything mechanical. Bolters can have machine Spirits, Space Marine Armour can have machine spirits. It's not a thing that gets added, it's a thing that just exists. Marines also have reaction times measured in thousands of seconds, and situational awareness on par with a computer, not to mention the fact that they're all data linked together adding to their situational awareness. The vehicles themselves are also made out of a material called Ceramite and Adamantium (Which cannot be reforged after being forged because it gets that strong) so while the armour may appear thinner, it'd take a railway gun to put a hole in it. I mean the Las Guns carried by the Imperial Guard have the stopping power better than that of .50 BMG HEIAP Rounds, and those still struggle to tickle things in this universe. Also AI is heretical in this universe and is only practiced by the dark mechanicum. Also dreadnoughts are commonly permanently installed in the body, with the sensor suite being directly linked into their brain. so they can see everything going on around them, whilst also being datalinked to all the marines and vehicles around them. The closest thing to AI are servitors who act as "AI". Overall a good attempt, considering that learning about 40K is like knowing the names and locations of each brick in the Great Wall of China...

I mean didn't he account pretty well for how strong the armor is and it's just not very impressive compared to modern composite armors? Like .50 BMG is not really that impressive, sure that sounds like a big gun but it kinda has nothing compared to a Rheinmetall 120 mm firing a hyper sonic tungsten or uranium long rod APFSDS round. Like that kinda round is also nothing to a modern tank even if it's classed as anti-material but that means it's for lightly armored targets not MBTs.

Only one thing I really disagree with here; trench warfare hasn't stopped getting used. While it is true that many armies prefer a more mobile method of warfare, they still train on how to dig, defend, and attack trenches. This is because trenches give a significant 'force multiplier' effect. When I was in the New Zealand Army, we were taught that you don't launch an attack against enemy troops unless you outnumber them 3 to 1. But if they have trenches, you don't attack unless you outnumber them 10 to 1. It's also much easier to dig trenches than it used to be. You just order in some engineers with an armoured digger, and they can dig enough trench for a whole Platoon in no time. Trenches these days are not usually long defensive lines stretching for hundreds of kilometres. They're usually a local defensive line around a strategic position, such as a bridge, town, or artillery firebase. Or you can just have an isolated section of trench on a hill watching over an important area. They're also popular in low-budget wars, such as the current conflict in eastern Ukraine, or the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s.

2:39 It's not so much that mankind intentionally went back on ammunition stowage, so much as humanity literally forgot how to properly store ammunition. You see, all of the Imperium's technology is based on ancient Standard Template Construct (STC) blueprints from the dark age of technology, which was humanity's technological zenith in around the 20th millennium, and any and all technological innovations that cannot be proven to have either originated from an STC blueprint or from a pice of archeotech from the dark age of technology are deemed heretical and even blasphemous by the Mechanicum and Imperium alike. Essentially, the Imperium of Man is a post-apocalyptic society that's desperately trying to reclaim its former glory, and through millennia of religious dogma following the Emperor's death has unintentionally stamped out all innovation, which is also why the Imperium has used the same equipment and technology for ~11000 years. If you want to know more about this, I recommend watching this video on the dark age of technology: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZnGlmOaqLiJZ6c and then this video on the Imperium's technological stagnation: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKC7inSVablobsk

That and the Rhino chassis (which a predator has) wasn't actually made for warfare, but is actually simply an admirer exploration vehicle meant to protect you from hostile environs and local wildlife, it wasn't designed as a vehicle of warfare, storing tank ammo wasn't part of its design hence why the predator has ammo stuffed wherever it'll fit. One detail to point out is that the gun sponsons on the Land Raider actually can be set in the forward recess, or the rear recess, although the rear recess seems to be more common because it feels more aesthetically pleasing, but my one Land Raiders tended to have them on the forward slots for the exact reason you mentioned regarding crew safety. Additionally, the viewport on the Dreadnought chassis is, as near as I can tell, intended to provide the interred Marine a window to the real world, instead of their entire experience being through a viewfinder screen. The thing is covered in sensors to give it a massive field of view and multiple view modes to boot, although you are correct about the ability to better utilize a 360 degree viewing system. Regarding the cupola mounted weapons, alot of them do also have the ability to operate similar to a CROWS turret, where the weapon is bolted straight to where the hatch would be, and the crewman just sits inside the tank and operates it remotely, although again, aesthetically it's less interesting in a hobby geared around looking pretty while committing warcrimes, so your point stands.

Me upon hearing your choice of music: My master has awakened Edit1: First major mistake, which is a fair one: Machine Spirit is actually just that, the machines spirit. Even Lasguns have them, if it's mechanical it has one, and if you treat your equipment well it's machine spirit will serve you well and perform literal acts of bullshit to save you, and if you treat your equipment like crap it will break and just not work far more frequently. AI did exist in 40k, but after a they basically had the whole Sky-Net thing, but on a galactic scale, Big E banned that shit on his next play through. Edit2: A kinda doesn't really matter thing: The Marines not having cover upon exiting the land raider doesn't really matter when their armor can shrug off a tank shell, this is doubly so for a first company of marines (who are most likely to have a land raider) who themselves will probably have Terminator armor. But you technically correct, which is the best kind of correct. Edit3: Agree: Walkers are dumb.

Funny thing is with the Land Raider is that generally (especially on the tabletop) it is used as a transport vehicle for TERMINATOR units, rather than typical marines. All Vehicles have Machine Spirits in 40k, some are much more powerful than others: IE Imperial Knights and Titans. I understand why you can see that fighting solo is also a bad thing but sometimes thats the only choice for tanks in 40k. Especially when its deployed in a support role of a deep strike squad. AI is banned in 40k. Overall im ok with alot of the things you said with me being a big 40k guy. One has to remember the Space Marine doctrine (as a whole) in that they conduct mostly offensive warfare against larger and less-mobile forces using pinpoint strikes and leveraging their superiority in their infantry units on a 1-on-1 basis. Which is to say, all these “tanks” are can be airdropped (yes even the land raider) very close to the enemy in situations where it is less practical to just drop the marines themselves. The land raider itself has a hatch at the very front as the primary method for the marines to disembark, the side doors are usually secondary. Once close enough, the marines are unloaded as close as possible in order to wipe out the enemy. That is to say, the marines are the main weapons of the land raider, not the other way around. They’re almost like amphibious beach landing craft, but on land. With that in mind, the predator is pretty much a light tank with an infantry support role, inserted on weak points at the enemy flank, taking out the light vehicles and fortifications of an unprepared enemy while suppressing them so that the space marines themselves and not the predator can exploit any breakthroughs made. Don’t know exactly what to make of the dreadnoughts, as I really haven’t seen tactics on the way they are used depicted much in the literature or elsewhere.

Something worth noting for the Land Raider, it is uniquely capable of providing ground transport to much larger infantry, so that is a potential rationalization for the awkward transport bay. The infantry the land raider would be transporting is arguably more durable than the land raider itself.

I don't know how much knowledge do you have about the universe, but you got it all wrong. You shoudnt analize Predator as a MBT, because on the context of the universe they were designed as a light tanks/light armored support, and predator weapons and role, was to support infantry. As you noticed they are converted APC Rhino, there are examples of this kind of tank in present times and they role is usually to be scout/light tank. As a MBT you should maybe give example of a Leman Russ Tank from imperial guard, becaus they were more like MBTs by design. But it is hard to give particular example because there is hundreds of difrent models of tanks, with difrent weapons and stuff. I don't think MBT idea is even a thing in a Wh40k universe. As the Land rider analize go, it is basically gloriefied APC, and its weapons are again "just to support infantry" , the size of the APC was this big because it was designed to carry terminators (marines with much heavier/bigger version of power armors). The forward facing as you called them "heavy bolters" are Assault bolters, and are in fact todays equivalent of Vulcan cannons and as the antiinfantry weapons go, this is far more effective than autocannon from predator (which wasnt antitank gun btw)
