The books are canon because they serve in their own way as prequels to the movies and there’s proof that in the books, they mention things that make you wonder in the movies like evie’s magic mirror and where it’s at between descendants and descendants 2, what led to Mal finally awakening her dragon and even before descendants 3, most of the characters are graduating and moving on. Jay got accepted into Sherwood University and he told Gil “let’s travel around the world, I’ll take a gap year” in descendants 3, indicated that he’s going to university and how Evie got her cottage in descendants 3

The books are cannon because there are certain moments in the movies where unless you have read the prequel books.You wouldn't understand what's going on like.For instance , Mal calling Uma shrimpy that'explained in rise of the lost. As for wicked world , it was created as a tie in between descendants 1 and 2 , but it also helped explain what went on in the books

Descendants books are cannon but to a point back in generation 1 I think it was book three where they line up who related to who so the books are more so off screen lore,Rise Of Red is interesting as there been a few redcons from the Gen 1 books but Red character picks up after you read her in Beyond.
