POTTY TRAINING
One of the first things people want to teach their puppy is how to be properly house-trained. Below is a simple step-by-step process, involving a crate that's just big enough for the dog to stand up, spin around, and lay down (and not any larger). This will allow the dog to learn to hold their bladder.
Depending on the age of the dog, we have to consider how long they can hold their bladders. A young pup at a couple of months old should stay crated for a couple of hours. This time frame can become longer the older the dog is.
After the time in the crate, the puppy is taken out and given a chance to go potty.
If they successfully go potty, the dog should be rewarded, perhaps taken on a walk. We try to reinforce that the bathroom break leads to more fun activities.
If the puppy doesn't go, then he or she is brought back to the crate. We wait 20 minutes, then repeat the process.
The important factor is to make the dog associate going outside with going potty, and that it's something to look forward to.
If the puppy happens to go inside the house, you don't need to rush at it with punishment behavior. You simply say "no," take the pup outside, and reward with positive reinforcement after they go potty correctly.
If the puppy has gone potty in the house, but you did not catch them in the act, then do NOT correct them. You must catch them immediately or else they won't understand.
Note: if your puppy goes potty inside their potty-training crate, then it's your fault. Dogs do not go potty where they sleep or eat unless they simply can't hold it.

Genetics often plays a large roll when it comes to fear. Just keep doing your best to build your puppy's confidence. If you can, try implementing counterconditioning and desensitization, in addition, you can try Behavior Adjustment Training. Often abbreviated as BAT, this modern method of dog training was introduced by Grisha Stewart. Its primary goal is to guide dogs in managing reactions to particular stimuli, especially when they exhibit fear, aggression, or other unwanted reactions. Through BAT, the aim is to foster a setting where dogs can autonomously adjust their behaviors and react more positively to familiar triggers. This is similar to counterconditioning and desensitization. In essence, while all three techniques aim to help the dog react better to specific stimuli, desensitization focuses on gradual exposure, counterconditioning focuses on changing emotional responses, and BAT emphasizes on the dog's autonomy and decision-making in the presence of triggers.

@@NateSchoemer one quick question. I just found out I'm getting forced to a shift in 2 weeks that will leave the puppy alone during my shift and I get the dog friday. I did have an opposite shift of my wife and maybe I can return to it soon. Can I do this or is it too unfair to the dog? I obviously can't put her in the crate for a shift, I'd give her a linoleum floored room to be in and try to get a friend to check on her. I'm just kind of lost on what to do now. I have the house ready for the dog, been studying but now my schedule sucks... any tips or advice?

I would like to start that I have watched all of your videos on repeat for the last month to help train my now 3 month old catahula leopard / German short haired pointer. She is progressing so much with our training. I started training her on the come command yesterday and just because I wanted to see how she would do I tried it at the dog park today and but the end of it she was coming on the first call! There were no other dogs in there but still!🤙🏼 I am still having trouble with the potty training. I take her out first thing in the morning. She always goes almost immediately. When I take her back inside, she plays around just fine. Following me around witch makes keeping an eye on her very easy, but with in 15-30min she will go again in the house. Even if she pooped and peed outside. I’ll tell her no take her outside, rinse and repeat till she goes outside again. Within 30min of her going outside she will go in the house. She isn’t hiding it from me and I can’t see any change in behavior to indicate she has to go… Q) we usually have training time with play time to follow 2-3 time a day. Should I create her after to make her hold it longer during the day? Would creating her regularly just make things worse?

If she's going more often than normal, then I would take her to the vet to make sure she doesn't have a UTI. If she doesn't have a UTI, then you may need to correct her more to stop the bad behavior of going inside the house. However, you should keep this in mind when adding corrections: Corrections in dog training is when we are using positive punishment to stop an undesired behavior. First, we must keep in mind that everything our dogs do is based on motivation. The motivation to access something pleasant, or the motivation to prevent something unpleasant. If your dog is practicing a behavior that is fun (self-reinforcing behavior), then you have two options to stop this. One; make sure to prevent the dog from being able to practice the undesired behavior. The second option is to use a correction to stop the behavior. A correction can be anything the dog doesn't like. So in the end, the motivation not to receive the correction must override the motivation to do the undesired behavior. If you use a correction and the undesired behavior continues, then the correction is not high enough. Here's an analogy to help understand this concept. It's important to remember that every dog has their bank account (their correction level). Some dogs are very wealthy, and some are penniless, just like people. Let's say that you are speeding down the highway and a police officer pulls you over and writes you a 25 cent-speeding ticket. The second the officer leaves, you will start speeding again because the ticket wasn't high enough to get you to change your behavior. But let's say he pulls you over and writes you a ten-million-dollar speeding ticket, now it's so high that you will avoid driving altogether, and you will be very stressed out. On the other hand, let's say he pulls you over and writes you a $125 speeding ticket. That would be enough to get you to slow down, without causing you to avoid the behavior of driving altogether. This is what we must do with our dogs; we need to correct them at a level that is adequate to their bank account. If the dog doesn't stop the bad behavior, then you may have to increase the correction. Just be sure to correct the dog in the act. In addition, proper corrections should not create a fearful dog. Usually fear when correcting a dog is due to the owner being angry, yelling at the dog, or correcting too hard. When we use a correction, it's simple cause and effect. A correction should never be personal and you should never yell at your dog. Once the correction is done, then we praise and reward our dog when they're doing what we like. If your dog knows why he/she is being corrected and knows how to prevent the correction from happening, then you shouldn't create any fear. Leash pop: This is when you make a snapping motion with the dog’s leash to engage the training-collar to give the dog a correction (a positive-punishment). If you're using a flat collar and that's not working, then you may need to use a prong collar to stop the behavior. I hope this helps!

This is a stupid question, but I have to ask. You gave the maximum time puppies can hold their bladders depending on their age. We're about to get a 13 week old German Shepherd puppy (CAN'T WAIT!), so that means he can hold his bladder for 3 hours. Should I then take him out at the 2 and a half hour mark? Also, I've been told that after a puppy wakes up, plays, and/or eats/drinks they need to be taken out to use the bathroom. When they do, does that timer reset? Sorry for the questions! Also, this is such an amazing potty training video! The best by far!

Thanks! The age to time holding their bladder is just a guideline. You'll quickly learn how often you have to take your puppy out. And yes, they do have to go after they wake up, play, and/or eats/drink. Lol! So puppies have to potty most of the time.

My only concern is what I do when I have to go to work? We would all love to have all the time in the world with our dogs, but vacation days are not endless and after a week or maybe two if one is lucky, you have to go back to work and leave the puppy alone for 8 hours (of course if you are always out of home for 8 hours you shouldn’t have a dog, but for example I work from home 3 days out of 5, so the problem stands just for 2 days)

Hi getting a dog soon and I've been watching a lot of your videos in preparation, they are the absolute best I have seen, thank you so much for making them! I have two questions about potty training. 1. I saw in other videos you like to use the dog's meals for training rewards. How does this impact the timing of taking your puppy out to potty? Most other training videos I have seen recommend taking them out a few minutes after finishing a meal, but if their meal is delivered during training do I take them to potty after training, or should I play with them after training, then crate for 5 or so minutes, then take them out? 2. I will have about 2 weeks off work to train my puppy, then I will have to leave them in a crate from about 9-1130 while I work. Then a couple hours in the afternoon as well. For my lunch break I intend to come home to train, walk, and let the puppy eliminate. I am curious on the timing of this as well. Since the puppy will have been in the crate for a couple hours, I assume I should take them to eliminate first, then train, then will they be able to eliminate again before I leave again since during training they will have eaten? I should have about 1.5 hours most days.

Here’s my issue my dog is potty trained for the most part. He can go on command and doesn’t have any accidents in his crate. Now he doesn’t have accidents unless there is something soft in his crate. It’s incredibly frustrating because whenever I think he’s done having accidents I put either a blanket or a dog bed in his crate and boom after a few days he pees on it. He’s just about a year old now and it’s still happening. He can go weeks without any accidents when there’s nothing else in his crate. But the second something soft is in his crate he has an accident. Just today I took him outside he peed and pooped in the yard and I put him in his crate with a brand new blanket in it and he peed on it in less then 5 minutes. I don’t think it’s marking because it’s quite a bit of pee and he doesn’t do it anywhere else. I’m desperate for some help because I don’t want him to sleep on a hard surface for the rest of his life. Also if it matters we’ve never used puppy pads in his life.

This is actually more common than you may think. It's the same reason why it takes human toddlers longer not to be potty trained, then it did 30 years ago. They've made diapers so effective at absorbing the urine, that the child doesn't experience the discomfort from a wet diaper, and as a side effect they continue the behavior. The less absorbent the diaper, the faster the child learns. First, you want to keep in mind that everything our dogs do is based on motivation. The motivation to access something pleasant, or the motivation to prevent something unpleasant. When you don't have a blanket in the crate and the dog goes potty, then he experiences a consequence. The discomfort from being wet with urine. However, when you have the blanket in the crate, the dog doesn't have to sit in his pee. This is good and bad. Good because we don't want our dogs in their mess. Bad because it gives them the chance to relieve themselves without discomfort. Much like the very absorbent diapers. Basically, the dog has realized that it's more comfortable for him to pee on the blanket than it is to hold the pee in. When this happens in a dog's mind, the best way to stop it is to correct the dog in the act. This is how I fix it: Step one: Let the dog sleep in the crate at night without a blanket. Step two: Then in the morning, remove the dog from the crate. Place the blanket in the crate. Then put the dog back in the crate without providing a bathroom break. We are setting the dog up to fail, so we can correct them when they do the undesired behavior. Step three: Have a camera set up (facetime or a Furbo works great for this) so you can watch the dog when you leave the room. Step four: The moment you see your dog starting to go potty on the blanket, you say "no" or whatever sound you prefer. Then you walk to the dog and give him a correction with the training collar. I would do this a few times until the dog can hold it for an additional 5 minutes or so after I put him back in the crate with the blanket. For example; if it's the 3rd day that I'm doing this and the dog holds it for 5 minutes after I leave the room, then he's probably trained at this point and I don't have to set him up to fail anymore. He has to know that it's not an okay behavior. So the motivation not to receive the correction needs to override the motivation to go potty on the blankets. My male Australian shepherd has been asking to go outside since he was 10 weeks and has never had an accident in his crate and very few in the house. He puts himself to bed at 9:00pm and now sleeps until 5:00am. If he wanted to go out we would take him. He is very vocal when he wants to go and scratches at the door almost in a panic. Yesterday he peed in the house 3 times without making a sound. He is on a houseline so i grabbed that said no and took him outside mid pee. I take him outside even when he does not need to go. He plays with the other dogs or me or we do some training. He loves his rolling rings. This morning after he had just been out he started to pee right beside me. I am home all day and he is supervised by my husband or myself. We always go outside with him on leash until he does his business. Any advice on how I should deal with this would be appreciated. I would like to fix this problem before it gets out of control. Thank you.

If it's an unusual behavior or one that's out of character, then it's possible that it could be a medical issue, such as a UTI. If not, then I would treat him like a new puppy learning how to be potty trained. When he's not being supervised, he should be outside in the yard or in the crate. If he's loose in the house, then I would keep an eye on him. If he goes potty inside and you catch him in the act, then you can correct him. Hi, I have had a few dogs in my life but i have never used your training methods as I did not know they even existed! My last dog, Muttley an Alaskan Malamute, died a few weeks ago at 12 years old. A great friend to myself and my children. I have subsequently decided to begin a new family life with a German Shepherd. I have sought out new training methods and decided yours is the one I want to teach myself and Django (our new puppy that we pick up in 4 weeks from now on 25/03/22). Thanks, and I'm happy the videos are helpful. Right away. Just use your dog's name the same way you would use anyone else's name. Since it's not a command, there is nothing to reinforce. If you want the name to be a command, such as an informal recall or focus command, then treat it as such. I read the exact opposite. What i read was you were supposed to bring the dog right back inside after he did his business. That's what i did and it worked. I had the most reliable dog ever when it came to going outside.

Great observation! The reward should depend on what the dog prefers. If your dog likes being indoors, allow them to come inside immediately after they do their business. If they prefer staying outside, let them stay out after they finish. The key is to reward the dog with what they want right after they go potty. If you take your dog inside after they relieve themselves but they want to stay outside, they might delay going potty to stay outside longer.

This is all great stuff! I love your videos they’ve been very helpful!! I just recently got a puppy and I’ve been with my mom while potty training my moms dogs. However what do you do if your puppy goes in the crate, I’ve tried to follow these steps and right after I take him out he lays on my feet or sits by me, I wait the full three minutes and then take him back in and put him in the kennel and set a timer for 20 mins, he goes right after we’ve put him back in his kennel so he’s gotten many baths. I just want to set him up for success but I’m not sure what to do when he goes potty in the kennel. I’ve also checked the size and his fit is perfect there isn’t enough room for him to go on one side and lay on the other if he goes then he will step in it or lay in it and it will get all over him. I would love some feed back! Thank you!!

A little update: he has finally gone potty outside!!! It took about 60 mins after the two hour mark but he did it! I guess He didn’t want to go in the kennel anymore after sleeping in there, he whined a little I took him out and he pounced around for a bit and then boom he peed!! Very excited and happy for him! Also its important to note that dogs who spend most of there life outside and then come in one day will naturally not want to potty in the house because dogs like to potty on surfaces that they normally potty on. Thats why some dogs like to potty on carpet but no so much on hardwood flooring or that is how its been with one of my outside dogs that got pregnant and is now inside we have had one accident and she has had free roam of the house the whole time. Disclaimer: most of my dogs are in the house but we have two that hate being inside, because of this they are allowed to live outside. The backyard is fenced and they have dog houses along with a small kiddie pool to play in the water. My dog got pregnant a month before she was due to be fixed and it was because a neighbor's dog got in the fence some how we dont know how since it goes under ground a foot and its 8 ft tall except the gate. The neighbor's are actually planning on moving and want to leave there dog here and abandon it so it will probably be fixed and taked to a good home by us, we do adoption papers along with having the new owners sign a paper stating that the puppies are legally ours and can be taken back due to poor health,mental, or just bad living conditions basically for the dog and we check in every 6 months to see how they are doing. We used to breed boxers so thats why we do all of this.

Hi Nate. I gave my puppy his first NO this morning after he went inside the house. Seems like he tries to go in the same area inside every time. My question, after I bring him outside and he goes potty in the area I want, and then bring him back in to play (with eyes on), should I put him back in a crate after a while to get his bladder holding again or what should I look for so he can let me know he has to go? For example will he scratch the door? Bark like crazy? I just want to get to a point where he will let me know and I don't have to wait for him to sneak over to his preferred area in the house. Awesome! Thanks and yes, John is a excellent dog trainer! I've always enjoyed training with him. When I'm raising a puppy, I just try to take them out to potty as much as possible. If I'm unable to watch them, then I put them in the crate. You can teach something like barking or ringing a bell if you like, but I've never done that with my own dogs. Help! We got our beautiful puppy 2 weeks ago at 8 weeks of age. I think I messed up a bit. My husband and I work from home so I thought we'd always have eyes on and wouldn't need a crate for potty training. Yes, you can start crate training now. Just make it a pleasant place for your puppy to be. I often give puppies kongs filled with frozen raw meat for them to enjoy in their crate. It's a healthy treat and it creates a positive association for the pup. :)

Great question Oscar! You want to say "no" or whatever your conditioned correction is the moment the dog/puppy starts to go to the bathroom inside the house. Most puppies will stop mid poop or pee when you go to take them outside. The key is that you don't let them play immediately when you take them outside or it would be seen as a reward. I treat it the same way as when I take them outside any other time to go to the bathroom. If they go within the three minutes I praise and reward them by doing something they enjoy. If they don't go within the three minutes, I take them back to the crate and repeat the process that I would from before. Hope this helps and thanks again for another great question!

I adopted a 9 m.o. GSD mix 3 months ago and, luckily, he came fully potty trained and has never had an accident in the house, BUT, he refuses to go on the sidewalk or on dirt-filled planter squares near my apartment. Most of the time this is ok, but it isn't always convenient to take him all the way to the nearest grass (I live in NYC) every time I want him to go potty. He will hold his pee all day if necessary waiting for me to take him to the park, which has made it very difficult to try to train him to go on the sidewalk. He needs a lot of exercise so I don't like to go a day without taking him to the park or dog park. Any advice?

When fully potty trained, dogs usually prefer to relieve themselves on a consistent surface. If your dog likes to go in the grass, that's what he'll look for to go potty. What can help you make the transition is to get a grass pee pad and place it where you want your dog to go potty. This should help him go to the new location. After using the grass pad for a while, you'll be able to remove it, and he should still go in the same location. Regarding potty training… I am getting an 8 week old puppy and will have about a week and a half off work to train her before I am back to work. I know she won’t be able to hold her bladder much. So I plan to go home during lunch. However I also realize that she will have to go potty in between. I don’t have a closed yard and/or a doggy door. So, I got a special crate (potty side/ sleeping side). My question is, how would you suggest that I train her to go potty during my week off? It also won't create a negative association with the crate as long as you don't treat the crate as a punishment. I keep the crate next to my bed and I'll set my alarm to wake me up halfway through the night to potty the pup. If the pup doesn't go after the 3 minutes, I just put them back in the crate and go back to sleep. Usually the puppy wants to go back to sleep as well, so it's not an issue. If they go, then I just let them walk around for a few minutes before taking them back inside. So the rules can be adjusted for the night hours. Most puppies that I have trained are fine being taken out once at night.

Going to admit, I’m extremely excited but extremely nervous! I have not had a puppy in over 15 years! My lil NaLu passed earlier this year. It was truly devastating. But I’m missing that companionship so much. I know she would not want me to be without a fur baby. That said I am going to be a fur parent at the end of this October beginning of November. I work 4 days (Monday thru Thursday) 8 hours a day. Im trying to work it to where I can come home at lunch quickly to take the pup out on the days my husband is at work. He is a firefighter and is home 48 hours then works 24 hours. What advice would you give us with our schedules for the potty training?

Sorry about your loss, and congrats on deciding to give a new fur baby a forever home. Just take the pup out as much as possible. If you can make a quick trip home to potty the pup, that would be ideal. If you can't then you may need to make a set up to where the pup can go potty and still sleep in the crate. something like this: shorturl.at/bpxNZ It's not ideal, but it's better than the pup laying in it's own pee. I would just use a puppy grass pad over a puppy pad.

After your reply I purchased a large plastic tray, wee wee pads and plan on getting a couple pieces of sod to lay on top it will be located on our bedroom balcony. I worked it out with my boss while the pup is ‘in potty training’ and my husband is on duty to come home to potty him. But that could be 4 hours. So I also purchased a huge crate. I made a metal divider cut a hole in the middle. I made one side of the divider as big as a large wee wee pad, which I will also cut a piece of sod to go over that wee wee pad. I made the other side of the divider just large enough for him to be able to turn around with bedding. The crate will be located in our bedroom next to our bed on my side. I only keep them in the crate when I don't have eyes on them. This helps prevent them from practicing bad behaviors while you're not watching them. I always crate puppy's at night until they are fully house and potty trained. Meaning, they know how to behave in the house when no one is watching them and they don't potty in the house. So if you take your puppy out in the am when you get up. Once your pup goes potty, then you can play, train, or hangout. Whatever you like, really. We only put them back in the crate if they don't go potty at first. This helps teach them to go once taken outside. I hope that helps. Cheers!

Hi Nate! Had a quick question about potty training. I've followed your steps and started relaxing through the night about how often we take him out. I'll take him to go potty when he cries and he hasn't had a single accident in his crate yet. He is a 9 week old German shepherd but during the day he does multiple accidents in the house. He gets taken outside about every 30min-1hr and will still come inside and have an accident shortly after. Is there something that we're not doing or something more that we can do? Do I just need to go back to every 2 hrs at bed time? I'm just lost of why he pees in the house shortly after going potty outside. He does drink a lot of water.

If he goes in the house during the day and you don't see it when it happens, then he will think it's an okay behavior. If he's out of the crate you should have eyes on him 100% of the time until he is fully potty trained. I like to use two different corrections techniques when the pup goes potty in the house and I catch them. One; I say "no", followed by a leash pop, then I take the dog outside. Alternatively, I'll say "no" and then carry the puppy outside by their scruff, supporting most of the puppy's weight with my second hand. You don't want to carry him completely by the scruff, just enough to make it an unpleasant experience, not enough to hurt the pup. Best of luck!

So you set the dog up to potty in the house and then immediately take them outside to potty there? You’d be waiting for hours for them to have to go again right? Am I misunderstanding this step?

I correct them when they start to potty indoors. Once I do, they usually stop. After taking them outside, they typically go immediately. If they don't, I take them back inside and place them in the crate, repeating the steps mentioned in the video. I hope this helps. Cheers!

Wonderful video as always. Came back to see this one, haven't seen it before. But it doesn't anwer to my problem. I've got an almost one and a half years old male corgi. He still pees (or marks) inside every two months or so. He does this to bags or boxes that are on the floor. I don't know if it is hormones or what. He hasn't done it in a month now, we'll see if he does it again. He does this only when we are in the house, never alone even though he roams around the house when he's alone. Any suggestions?

You would have to correct him in the act. Corrections in dog training is when we are using positive punishment to stop an undesired behavior. First, we must keep in mind that everything our dogs do is based on motivation. The motivation to access something pleasant, or the motivation to prevent something unpleasant. If your dog is practicing a behavior that is fun (self-reinforcing behavior), then you have two options to stop this. One; make sure to prevent the dog from being able to practice the undesired behavior. The second option is to use a correction to stop the behavior. A correction can be anything the dog doesn't like. So in the end, the motivation not to receive the correction must override the motivation to do the undesired behavior. If you use a correction and the undesired behavior continues, then the correction is not high enough. Here's an analogy to help understand this concept. It's important to remember that every dog has their bank account (their correction level). Some dogs are very wealthy, and some are penniless, just like people. Let's say that you are speeding down the highway and a police officer pulls you over and writes you a 25 cent-speeding ticket. The second the officer leaves, you will start speeding again because the ticket wasn't high enough to get you to change your behavior. But let's say he pulls you over and writes you a ten-million-dollar speeding ticket, now it's so high that you will avoid driving altogether, and you will be very stressed out. On the other hand, let's say he pulls you over and writes you a $125 speeding ticket. That would be enough to get you to slow down, without causing you to avoid the behavior of driving altogether. This is what we must do with our dogs; we need to correct them at a level that is adequate to their bank account. If the dog doesn't stop the bad behavior, then you may have to increase the correction. Just be sure to correct the dog in the act. In addition, proper corrections should not create a fearful dog. Usually fear when correcting a dog is due to the owner being angry, yelling at the dog, or correcting too hard. When we use a correction, it's simple cause and effect. A correction should never be personal and you should never yell at your dog. Once the correction is done, then we praise and reward our dog when they're doing what we like. If your dog knows why he/she is being corrected and knows how to prevent the correction from happening, then you shouldn't create any fear. Leash pop: This is when you make a snapping motion with the dog’s leash to engage the training-collar to give the dog a correction (a positive-punishment). If you're using a flat collar and that's not working, then you may need to use a prong collar to stop the behavior. I hope this helps!

my dog is 3 years old. he's "pretty much" house broken, but if I leave for 2 to 3 hours or I go to a friend's house he will pee or poop. he's a very happy dog so its difficult to believe he's suffering from anxiety, but I'm probably wrong

Question, if we put the puppy in the kennel for not peeing right away isn't that teaching him that the crate is a negative thing? Ive watched a lot of training videos trying to find the best method for our 8 week old German Shepherd puppy . He hates the kennel. Your response is appreciated (:!

Only if you treat it as a punishment. When I put them in the crate it's never as a punishment, it's just a place they need to be on occasions. Look at it as cause and affect; if the puppy doesn't go potty, they have to go into the crate. This is no different than putting a puppy into the crate at night before bed. :)

However, I am concerned about the two Jack Russel/Chihuahuas that we already have. 7yrs old and the male started to poop and pee in the house once we brought the female GSD home. Back to potty training basics? The 9wk old puppy is also playing quite a bit with him and he hides from her/nips. Do we separate or do we continuously show dual affection and use commands like “Nice Jack” “Be Nice Millie(GSD)”? I hope this makes sense. Ha

Hi Nate. I do enjoy your videos and reference these when I train. Our philosophy and training methods are closely aligned! We currently have a 17 week pup. We picked her up about 12 days ago. She wasn't potty trained via breeder so we are working on this. It's a challenge during the daytime and evening as she is used to going on a pee pad at the door when she was at her breeder's home. Otherwise she sleeps all night, not a peep until we invite her out 8 hours later. When we take her out she is not in any hurry either. We are vigilant but are getting about 1 accident a day and it's usually a pee. Usually later in the evening. She goes out every 30 minutes or so depending on what we observe. We have bells at the door and she is using them if she is near the area but not reliably yet. My question is what happens when she pees indoors and rush her out to do her business but does nothing? Do we wait the 3 minutes, take her in and try again in 20 minutes? Otherwise when i take her outside we're outdoors for another 30 minutes or more before she goes again. That's the part that I am unsure about. It's the first pup that has multiple accidents. Previous pups maybe had 1 accident but we got them a little younger. Any input re my questions would be awesome. Louise

Sounds like she has free reign of the water bowl. I would set up limited access to the water bowl. 3 big sessions during the day. Drink as much as she wants during those times. And cut off the water around 5 hours before bedtime. This will increase control over when she needs to go potty and reduce risk of accidents during the evening.

Also, we are getting our GSD at 13 weeks. I know we've missed out on really important weeks of the dog's life, what do you recommend? I know it's 16 weeks until they're over the REALLY impressionable stage, so does that mean I still have time to train, socialize, and make him confident? I'm not too sure on what he was trained at his previous home (if anything), but I know he lived with a yorkie. Also, we have a 9 month old kitten (he absolutely adores everyone), so is it still okay to have them meet because the puppy hasn't reached 16 weeks left and maybe they can still form a bond (?) Would really appreciate if you answer me. My 12 week old GSD I've been potty training him for a month he knows where he should poop and pee but he doesn't understand that he is not allowed in the house, i live In an apartment so can I still take him out immediately after his accident or will he forget midway about the accident and won't understand the correction? Also how do I interrupt him? Should I yell? Because even when i say No! He still continues, should I use a leash pop? I don't think he'll understand it's a correction though? Can I leash pop with a harness? He sometimes pees on the way of me taking him out (in the elevator) because I've said No multiple times and pulled on the leash but he still won't respond and have an accident. Please help

As the dog gets older how do i train the dog to give a signal she needs to go such as standing in front of the door or barking at door etc? Or does this just naturally occur?

You can teach this behavior with a bell, but most dogs will learn to hold it when inside. Just give your dog plenty of opportunities to go potty outside during the day and you should be fine. :)
