In this episode, I will explain and demonstrate how to get more engagement and focus from your dog. This is also known as marker training or loading the markers. The two markers we will be the continuation marker and the terminal marker.
Continuation Marker: This sound lets your dog know they are correct, and you will be delivering a reward to them.
Terminal Marker: This lets your dog know they are correct, and they may come to you to get the reward. It is a release word that always predicts that a reward is about to be given.

That focus-on-the-face exercise is a great idea. Thank you for the proof of it, too. I’m a newbie foster mom of a Lhasa Apso (13 yrs old), and so excited about training correctly and with dynamism. Not gonna lie, tho ... in public I feel odd using dog-training language and expression - the short, oft-repeated words/sounds, the perky upspeak of praise, and the animated movement to keep interest high, etc. - I actually like it but it’s so unlike anything I’ve done before and it’s in public. There are a zillion dog owners in my neighborhood, but most are silent up owners staring at their phones as their hobbled dogs drags them down the street. Even they (on occasion) look up from their phones and watch my new-to-me old dog. Thanks much for this video - very clear, helpful content. Looking forward to watching your intro training series.

If your pairing (overshadowing) your marker with the delivery of the reward, then the dog won't become conditioned to the marker. I would suggest filming yourself training, so you can see if you're making any mistakes.

Hi Nate. I just discovered your channel and have been binge-watching your channel. I love your content and that you break down each step and explain why you do it. Do you have any advice for training senior dogs? I have an 9-year-old husky we adopted in 2021. I assume the same techniques apply but with more patience
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 2 жыл бұрын
Awesome, thank you! Yes, In regard to the science part, keep in mind that when you are training your dog the science is always the same; what varies between each dog are things like motivation, perseverance, intelligence, temperament, disposition, etc. Being able to adjust for each dog’s specific needs is considered the art of dog training. Because of this, not all techniques work on all dogs; and as a result, you have to be able to adjust accordingly. For example; a dog with a very high level of perseverance will continue to work through a difficult task to get a reward-while other dogs may give up early. I hope this is helpful. The imprinting age ends at 16 weeks, but it's not too late to start training. As long as your puppy didn't have any bad experiences within the first 16 weeks, then you shouldn't have any issues. I hope this helps and thanks for supporting the channel. :)

@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 19 күн бұрын
When considering which marker to use, it's helpful to focus on what the sound predicts. A terminal marker signals both release and reward, while a continuation marker simply predicts a reward. If your dog isn’t in a stay position, you can use either marker. However, if your dog is in a stay and you use a continuation marker, you’ll need to deliver the reward to your dog, as they’re not released from the stay. On the other hand, using a terminal marker releases your dog, allowing them to go and collect the reward.

@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 3 жыл бұрын
When doing a training session with a dog, I like to incorporate multiple behaviors in one session. Meaning; in one session I’m not just working on one command the entire time, but rather multiple commands. I may start by asking the dog to sit, then a down, then heel, then a down in motion, followed by the center command, etc. This makes the training more fun and engaging for the dog. As a side effect, the dog learns faster. Also, when training I would suggest filming yourself. This will help you identify and fix mistakes that you may be making during training. Here's a video that talks more about how I work with a dog. Even though it's a puppy video, the same process applies with an older dog. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hafHfHd7aJdpndU

@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 2 жыл бұрын
When he breaks the stay, tell him "wrong" or whatever word you choose. This would be a marker that predicts leash pressure. Then use the leash pressure to place him back into the down. Don't give him the reward when he breaks the position. Check out this video, but replace "No" with a different word, if you are already using "no" as a conditioned correction. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWbMdWubg51smNE

@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 3 жыл бұрын
They usually become conditioned within a few days to a week. It depends a lot on your timing. If you are pairing the marker sound with the delivery of the reward, then that would slow down the learning process. Sometimes it helps to film yourself training to make sure you're not making any mistakes. Regardless I would start teaching behaviors with the physical cue, but before each session spend about 30 seconds on engagement training.

My 5 month old lab puppy used to be very focused on me and highly food motivated, but recently she doesn’t seem to be as interested in paying attention and just wants to look at everything else. I use her kibble when we train. Is there a way to help her increase her food drive to what it was before. Even when doing the engagement training she just wants wonder off and do something else.
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 2 жыл бұрын
For sure. It's commonly used technique and it's not as bad as it sounds. Most dogs’ low food motivation is caused by a few things: Either the dog has been overfed, free-fed, given very high-value food such as cooked steak, or sometimes just feeding out of a bowl can cause this. As a result, the dog just doesn’t care that much about getting fed as a reward. The technique that we like to use to correct a lack of food drive is food deprivation. For this, you will want to use mealtime as a training time. Bring the dog out and offer food to train, if the dog is not interested, no big deal, put the food away and try again at dinner. Again, if the dog is not interested, put the food away and try again the next day. Continue to do this until your dog is willing to work for the food. Be sure not to give the dog any food between training. The dog has to know that he will only get the food that he works for. I’ve used this technique on dozens of dogs and it’s worked every time. You can also try increasing your dogs speed, which will often help with food motivation. Check out this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnqalmqEl6uKpqc

I have a 3 Yr old chocolate labrador who I am starting back with basics due to having trouble training due to his allergies. He snatches treats and when I try teaching the marker word he breaks his position evrytime as he takes the treat from my hand, so I really don't know how this will build duration with him if he keeps breaking the position in his haste to get the treat. Do you have any advice how to overcome this?
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 3 жыл бұрын
You can do this with or without the help of the leash. Have a leash and collar on the puppy. Then hold the leash in one hand with a part of the leash resting under your foot, so if he jumps up, the leash will stop him. Also, be sure not to add any tension on the leash when he is sitting nicely. Then slowly start to move your hand with a treat towards your puppy, if he jumps up, stop him with the leash and move the hand away. Then when he's sitting again, repeat the process. continue to do it until he stays sitting until the food reaches him. If he's aggressively biting at the food, then another trick is to hold the food in your fist. if he tries biting at the food, then the hand stays closed. Once he's being gentle, then slowly start to open the hand. Instantly close it again, if he starts to bite too hard. Repeat until he knows that he needs to take the food nicely. The idea is basic cause and effect. I hope this helps!

Hi Nate! Love your videos. My wife and I recently Got an 8 week old German shepherd and I have been watching so many of your videos. Amazing content, I love your detailed explanations. My puppy doesn't have much focus right probably due to how young he is so I have begun engagement training along with socializeling him as well and building his confidence. A couple questions I have is what is a good age to begin engagement training and approximately how long does it take the average dog to become conditioned to the markers?
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'll start as early as 8 weeks of age as long as the pup is comfortable in their new environment. I can get most dogs conditioned to the markers within 1-3 days. For you, it may be different depending on your timing. Since timing is so important, if you're off by a second, it can make the training take longer. In addition, the dog's intelligence, perseverance, and motivation will play a large role as well. I would suggest doing this exercise for three days, twice a day for 5 minutes. After that, spend 30 seconds to a minute of engagement training before each obedience session. This will help the pup become more engaged for each session, which will speed up the training. Lastly, even if he's not fully conditioned to the markers, by using them each day during obedience, he will become conditioned. I hope this helps!

Correct: "break= release : free= terminal marker" . For my dogs break means they are released, but it doesn't guarantee a reward. Free is the terminal marker which releases them and grantees a reward. Thanks for the comment/question! :)

I usually will do 1 - 3 obedience sessions each day. Each session is usually around 5 - 20 minutes, depending on what I'm working on and how new or advanced the dog is. 20 minutes would be the max I would do with an advanced dog. I keep the sessions really short for new dogs, so they don't lose interest in the training. :)

Hi Chuck! The sooner you can start the better. A puppy's imprinting stage is within the first 16 weeks of life. This means, things they learn or experience during this time, will stick with them into adulthood. I like to do a lot of confidence-building exercises and I also try to get the puppy to enjoy the training, so they will enjoy it when they are older. We just had a great time with this in the back yard. I lost him for a few seconds when a squirrel ran overhead, but he actually focused back up faster than usual :D I do have two quick questions that I would really appreciate your time in answering: I've seen your answers to other people saying that you train at mealtime and like to make dogs work for their food. Does that mean you are essentially giving the dogs their whole breakfast/dinner in the form of these rewards? Second, is there a 'too long' to have them make eye contact before rewarding them for it? I know eye contact can be construed as aggressive behavior to them, and River gave me a little bit of growling when I held out too long. (On the other hand, demanding is kind of his default state if I hold out too long on anything at all, which I'm sure will just take training him to wait in gradually larger increments and not reward him until he stops bitching, but it's becoming a looong process with him.) Thank you for being so incredibly generous with your time and knowledge. These videos add up to thousands of dollars worth of private instruction and you have done countless dogs around the world an invaluable service in making them accessible for everyone. I'm absolutely going to be buying your manual shortly!

Thanks for the comment and for supporting the channel. 1) Yes, I like to use the dog's food and I have them work for each meal. However, I only do this until they can do all commands on verbal only. This allows me to start spacing out rewards, so I don't have to give them as many as we do at the beginning of the training. 2) You can increase the duration for the eye contact as the dog becomes better with the exercise. In the beginning, I don't make them wait very long as all. Cheers!

Not going through all of the comments but I couldn’t help but notice something. YES was your pay in place reward marker for the dog sitting and looking up at you. When you “tested” the marker you wanted a change in behavior and advised the marker was not yet charged as the dog did not move. BUT… you charged the YES marker for sitting and eye contact- no movement. So, this puppy was actually doing was it was conditioned to do :) My mentor uses “good” as a duration marker (I like what your doing keep doing it and don’t move )… and Yesss as the release/terminal marker meaning “I like what you just did, you’re now released to come and get your reward. Just food for thought.

When performing exercises with the dog whilst not having a reward readily available (showing tricks to friends or family spontaneously) I read in a previous comment that you shouldn't use Free or Yes because the dog will expect a reward when they hear this. So, without having a reward, you want to make your dog Sit from 10 feet away with the implied Stay. How do you distinguish between a continuation marker and a terminal marker when only giving verbal praise as the reward for a correct behavior? I hope this question makes sense. Sort of difficult to explain..
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 4 жыл бұрын
If I don't have a reward for the dog, then I'll just use verbal praise. You can also use petting as a reward, but many dogs won't see this as valuable as food or toys. Then if I wanted to release the dog, but without the reward, then I would use the release word. When I train dogs, I use the word "break". I hope this helps and thanks for the question. :)

@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 3 жыл бұрын
I first want to make sure I can get the dog to do the behavior with the physical cue the way that I like. One of my favorite dog trainers and mentor of mine Dave van Garderen would always say, "don't name it until you love it"! And I couldn't agree more, because when you add the command, the dog will perform the behavior the way they perform it when you name it. This is why my dog Arih performs everything with speed and motivation because that's how I got her to perform it before I named it. I hope this helps and thanks for supporting the channel. :)

Thanks for the comment and for supporting my channel! For dogs that are less motivated, this is my process; I bring the dog out for training in the morning (using his dog food). If he's not interested, I say great we'll try again at dinner time. When dinner time rolls around I'll again start training the dog. If the dog quickly loses interest, no big deal, we'll try again at breakfast the next day. I'll continue to do this till I get the motivation and attention that the training requires from the dog. You mustn't feed him anything between the training. He must know that he will only get the food if he works for it. This has worked for me on every (lower motivation) dog that I have trained. I hope this helps and thanks again for supporting the channel. Nate Schoemer when you say “you musnt feed inbetween training”, does that mean if the dog is unmotivated, they only get food during training? For example, training time starts, dog hasnt eaten yet, she loses interest, so then we skip breakfast and try again at lunch? If shes interested, do we feed her entire meal through training? Or train for a few minutes then give rest of the food in a bowl?

To get reliability you may have to add corrections. You can also increase your dogs food drive. Here's a section from my dog training manual that may be helpful. Corrections in dog training is when we are using positive punishment to stop an undesired behavior. First, we must keep in mind that everything our dogs do is based on motivation. The motivation to access something pleasant, or the motivation to prevent something unpleasant. If your dog is practicing a behavior that is fun (self-reinforcing behavior), then you have two options to stop this: • One: Preventing the dog from practicing the undesired behavior. • Two: Using a correction to stop the behavior. A correction can be anything the dog doesn't like. So, in the end, the 58 motivation not to receive the correction must override the motivation to do the undesired behavior. If you use a correction and the undesired behavior continues, then the correction is not high enough. Here's an analogy to help understand this concept: Imagine every dog has a bank account (their correction level). Some dogs are very wealthy, and some are penniless, just like people. Let's say that you are speeding down the highway and a police officer pulls you over and writes you a 25 cent-speeding ticket. The second the officer leaves, you will start speeding again because the ticket wasn't high enough to get you to change your behavior. But let's say he pulls you over and writes you a ten-million-dollar speeding ticket, now it's so high that you will avoid driving altogether, and you will be very stressed out. On the other hand, let's say he pulls you over and writes you a $125 speeding ticket. That would be enough to get you to slow down, without causing you to avoid the behavior of driving altogether. This is what we must do with our dogs; we need to correct them at a level that is adequate to their bank account. If the dog doesn't stop the bad behavior, then you may have to increase the correction. Just be sure to correct the dog in the act. In addition, proper corrections should not create a fearful dog. Usually fear when correcting a dog is due to the owner being angry, yelling at the dog, or correcting too hard. When we use a correction, it's simple cause and effect. A correction should never be personal and you should never yell at your dog. Once the correction is done, then we praise and reward our dog when they're doing what we like. If your dog knows why he/she is being corrected and knows how to prevent the correction from happening, then you shouldn't create any fear. You can get a copy of my manual here: amzn.to/2P2tyQH Make him work for all his food. Before we start training our dogs, we must know what motivates them. With any dog I start training, I like to begin with food and luring. Now, something I’m often asked by people is, “How do I train my dog when my dog doesn’t have any food motivation?” First, let me start by saying that every dog has food motivation, what varies is how intense the food motivation is. If you have a dog with low food motivation, there are techniques that you can use to increase that food drive. Most dog’s low food motivation is caused by a few things: Either the dog has been overfed, free-fed, given very high value food such as cooked steak, or sometimes just feeding out of a bowl can cause this. As a result, the dog just doesn’t care that much about getting fed as a reward. A common technique that we like to use to correct a lack of food drive is food deprivation. For this you will want to use mealtime as a training time. Bring the dog out and offer food to train, if the dog is not interested, no big deal, put the food away and try again at dinner. Again, if the dog is not interested, put the food away and try again the next day. Continue to do this until your dog is willing to work for the food. Be sure not to give the dog any food between training. The dog has to know that he will only get food that he works for. I’ve used this technique on dozens of dogs and it’s worked every time.

Great question! Just make sure that it sounds different. When you use yes or good as a marker is should sound very distinct. When you use it as verbal praise it should be done with a different rise and inflection in your voice. If it's done that way, then it shouldn't cause any confusion for your dog. I hope that helps and thanks again for supporting my channel. :)

Can my 1,5 years old Auisse do these tricks fast like them? :( We got seperated because of corona. So now he is untrained dog and never listens, even just started to not pulling me out. When I give him a "free" command, he lies, touches, does everything he knows. Now I discovered you and I'll start from 0. I hope your videos will be helpful for me. :)

I have a German Shepard 10 weeks old Is this too young to teach focus? During training he’s highly distracted with us at home and the trainer. He just wants to play or bite the leash LOL. He’s not food driven so clicker training has been way harder than with our other dogs who have been clicker trained.

No, 10 weeks is not too old. It would help if you build your pups food drive. Here's a small section from my dog training manual that I believe will help: Before we start training our dogs, we must know what motivates them.

Thank you for the great videos and I have just picked up a copy of your book too. I have been working with my 4 year old rescue dog on your engagement training exercises. He is doing great but he is a very skittish dog (we know he was shot in the past but don't know much else about his previous life). If I make any kind of hand motion or move my hands up to my chin, he runs away from me. Sometimes he will run if I just give him a command. Any suggestions? I really want to build his confidence and he seems to enjoy training very much.

I've watched this a couple of times and I'm still confused about the desired behavior. We are marking with YES when the dog looks at us. Then we are marking FREE when they look at us again and we lead them forward. Are they supposed to be continuously looking at us before we release them? The dogs you are working with all sit first. Is that the desired behavior? Sit and then look at us? Then say FREE to indicate they no longer need to focus on us?
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 2 жыл бұрын
You mark when the dog is looking at you. This exercise teaches the dog to look at us as well at getting the dog conditioned to the two markers. Just keep in mind that our words mean what they predict. Continuation marker (Yes) = Reward Terminal marker (Free) = Reward and release

HI great video. I have question about markers. Found on web this explanation leerburg.com/markers.htm They are using YES as positive marker, NO as negative marker and GOOD as continuation marker. Now I am bit confused because there is no "Terminal" marker. Please correct me if I understand it correct - at this example I have provided does YES corespond to your "terminal marker"? In their explanation is "YES is also a word that is used as a release command when the dog does something correctly. This means "YES" not only tells the dog that what he just did was correct, it also tells the dog that he can stop doing what he doing and he is now free to interact with you"

Thanks! Yes, they are using yes as the terminal marker. In fact, a lot of my dog training I learned from Michael Ellis. You can find some excellent sources at Leerburg. I'm also friends with Forrest Micke, and he has an exceptional course on teach the focused heel to your dog. :)

I have a 3 month old boxer, she is good at listening inside but outside she doesn't listen at all, does anyone have any tips? Also she still has some accidents inside after she has been outside in the garden (off leash) is this because she sees outside as play? How do i correct that?

There's a much easier way to do that and better in the long run. You get your puppy or dog to lay down, grab a treat, hold it, put your hand between their front paws and let em sniff it and try to grab it. Say your dog's name with the command "watch" and then give him/her the reward. They'll know they have to look at you first and they'll understand you're more important than the treat itself

Should I only focus on engagement in different environment with different distractions and then start to train commands?

Thanks! Work on each step until you think your dog is ready for the next step. If you feel you have progressed too quickly, then you can always go back a step or two in the training. I hope this helps! Cheers! :)
