They were built with one thing in mind "What will players enjoy/ be engaged with while doing?" (not simply time consuming) One is designed AT the player's money and time. Grinding is fine if it has a clear goal (leveling/raiding etc ) and that goal is engaging. Now there is no real progression. You never feel all that much stronger or better as everything levels with you and your gear scor... I mean "item level". Plus the utter lack of community takes away from the "engagement" portion of the "formula". Vanilla is better at the MMORPG parts if the game lol

I played Wow for the first time around 2008 with Wrath of the lich king and i got hooked. 11 years after i came back because of Asmongold and his videos, my first impression on BFA was like this game is sooo much easier than it used to be and i find no enjoyment whatsoever. I decided to give classic a try and holly shit the difference is palpable, In a couple of hours i had more fun rather than the 2 weeks i spent on BFA. I'm sold to play classic when it comes out.

I feel the trend of much more visible indy games is a counter to what you're talking about. Things like Battle Brothers or Sunless Sea are vibrant pieces of story telling. However they are single player experiences rather than multiplayer.

The thing about Diablo 3 is, now that there are seasons, starting 1 new character for the season and leveling and farming items is fun until you hit that one point where it's like "I need exactly this legendary, with exactly these stats and in ancient quality". After that it's a fcking chore, because you watch thousands of legendaries drop on T13+ and all of them are trash compared to what you have, but not good enough for you to progress. Hell, even pushing GRs is actually still kinda fun, because you see yourself progress and you see the fruits of your work! But then you hit that wall where it's like "ok, now I really can't go any further until I get that 1 item with perfect stats), it stop being fun specifically because you can't push GRs anymore. After that, you just watch legendaries drop like flies, you're salvaging all of them and that is just straight up sad to watch because a legendary doesn't feel like a legendary anymore. The other day I crafted 30+ Hellfire Amulets. I got 4 ancients. Out of those 4, I got 0 with the passive I want and 1 with a passive I can make use of for a completely different build.

I was leveling in duskwood on my 43 druid. handed in a quest got some gloves, they got an epic upgrade. I was kinda just disappointed by that, an item that was never supposed to be an epic just upgraded to. and removed the value of earning a new item, heres an epic.

the game doesnt have to many extrinsic rewards, it lacks intrinsic ones. Wether my gear progresses or not has nothing to do with the time or abillity i invest in the game wich leaves me with no reason to get better. instead it is determined by the number of weeks i am subbed and was able to get my jackpot boxes. Without A Challange like the Magetower or the chance of faliure at litteraly any activity the game has nothing left

vanilla wow had this problem. I was deeply involved in the PVP grind and everyone I teamed with (and against, from convo's in voice chats with them) were all the same... they were addicted and focused at hitting rank 14. And once they hit it they quit cold turkey. Not quick PVP, I mean "okay, Im gunna sale my account next week" and to this day I don't understand committing to that level of gameplay that was vanilla wow pvp and then just stop like that.

Unreal Tournament 04 was hands down one of the best designed games I've ever seen and had the pleasure of playing for years. Had an amazing community and literally endless amounts of maps and mods that always brought fun, different experiences and challenges. I remember the feeling of playing for years and finally figuring out how to wall jump to get to all those out of reach places, that small mechanic literally brought new life to EVERY single map for me, opening new paths and strategies to kill people. I recommend it for everyone at least once. The game will hold a special place in my childhood and heart forever. 10/10

@@whateverjustposting The problem with achievements is they tell you *what* goals to go for. You can say "just ignore them" but often times people can't (especially if it pops up saying you gotten it, reminding you they exist vs you having to check the list). It's better when you would see people in raid gear as a newbie and saying "I want that!" vs wow saying "equip all purple ilvl 350+ in all your slots" as an achievement and tries to make you want it in that way. The goal should be "completed" by you setting yourself to do something and being able to say you did it, not have a shiny icon tell you that you did what it wanted you to do instead.

Funny thing, but retail WoW is the way it is cuz it had to go this way. It was simplyfied cuz there were too many bs content to do after 3,4,5 expansions, it is easier cuz the power level went out of chart, player heroes are more powerful then Arthas ever has been. Difficulty cannot be synth scaled to everything, look at oblivion, at the end game where you were badass, the same f goblin shamans were as strong as dragons. That is why Classis WoW is just so good, even at 60 with epics you were just adventurers, the amount of content was just right.

And then there is GW2 where after 2xpacks you still have the same "max ilvl", the same max lvl, basicaly what you had before, just more to choose from. And you still need a group of about 20 to kill a world boss. (You could do it in more ppl, but it actually gets harder because of scaling :D )

The secret is in the numbers. WoW came out 15 years a go, in 2004 GW2 (second game in the GW universe) came in 2012. Those games are 8 years apart, plus they have totally different systems implemented. WoW still uses the OG system of "level up get better gear, expansion, level up get better gear" etc. Its a CORE mechanic of the game that's with it for 15 years. And ... that's the problem here, its so deep in the woods by now that all the simplifications were bound to happen, all the tweeks, fixes , easy of life elements (the good and the bad) are at this point in time things that you can't un-change. And now WoW Classic is being brought back, and if it succeedes if it PROVES with numbers that "hey THIS is what we want" then IMO just ... give WoW the axe and start thinking about WoW 2.

22:00 this happened to me in Legion. I never once got a legendary even after they upped the drop chance. By the time raids opened there were people who had three with the average having at minimum 1 and most had 2. I walked into H Emerald Nightmare with zero and got wrecked. Because of this along with unfortunately a GTX 970 (which are known for not liking WoW for some reason) had shit FPS. Thus my DPS was too low to continue on with Mythic Prog. Not a problem these days (1080TI & 8700K ftw) but being undergeared was just fkn cancer. Then I played casually and sunk a fair amount of hours into the game between then and BFA. Still never got a fkn legendary after completing the whole withered campaign.

I like BfA. What keeps me playing is my guild, and raiding and doing mythics with my guild. Other stuff? None of the other stuff BfA offers me would keep me playing. At all. I wouldn't delete me account cause I like the stuff I have accomplished, but none of it is engaging to me. Pugging myself into raids and into mythics? Hah! That can only keep me going so far. Its quiet, and soulless and lonely. But yes, sometimes when I am looking for something to do, I have a hard time finding something engaging. A lot of games are like that for me. I got more gratification from doing clockwork suits in runescape to level my agility from 40-50 than i got from doing literally anything in BFA or WOD which are the only two expansions ive played. If you dont know what clockwork suits is look it up. Basically you spam 1,2,3(or M1) for an hour maybe 2. Ive never facerolled harder in my life but shaving off a couple hours of doing an agility course felt pretty good.

The fundamental problem with a lot of modern game design is that just enough time has passed that the older developers, who created and perfected all the major genres of gaming back in the 90s and early 2000s, started to retire or head off to other projects... and newer developers haven't necessarily continued where the old generation left off. They didn't go back and study the older games, before working on the newer titles, so they haven't mastered the basics. For example, how many of the current WoW developers actually played vanilla WoW? Blizzard should have kept earlier versions of the game running 24/7, purely to educate new members of the team; it should have been there, constantly running on an internal Blizzard server, available as reference material for all subsequent work. But that clearly wasn't the case. In other art forms, you learn the basics. You study the masters. You strive to learn how to do what they did, before you try doing something new; that way, you truly progress... you build upon what came before. Gaming... hasn't really been doing that. Not for over a decade, at least.

They are not cool in a vacuum, someone besides you have to appreciate you having them - and WoW has increasingly moved the players into their own separate vacuum, making cosmetic rewards hollow and pointless!

after 10+ years i stil rember the feeling vanilla wow brought to me, the open fields of barren, the first HARD EARNED epic! omg i would open charackter just to scroll over it over and over and over, (it was typhoon two handed sword, it was for hunters but i got it for my warrior and BOY WAS I HAPPY) the feeling of getting the entering key to molten core and actualy entering it! holy shit the chilling feeling when you saw onyxia for the first time and the guild leader shouted at you for getting thrown into the small draggons egg lair xD it... it was absolute epic. and i will for sure play classic wow! ive put all other games on hold, fuck em, cash grabbing loot box micro transactions shit!!

I played like 300hours of BO4 and just had 3 or 4 extrinsic rewards. I opened a lot of chest thogh, but there were just like 3 skins there, that I was happy about. the res of the (guesswork) 500 boxes was just trash that noone and aspecially I didnt need. Since they do pay2win now I got back to BO2, where there are no chest. its just intrinsic - well but I got really worse, because my muscle memory just forgot everything in that half year of BO4. This is to say. I can't say if good K/D and high kill counts in the statistic after the game counts as extrinsic or intrinsic.

Serious question. Considering that vanilla was 60 levels, had zones and dungeons and raids to accommodate those 60 levels, is it reasonable to expect that any expansion will ever live up to vanilla? Just simply because vanilla was so massive and new. Don’t get me wrong, I love vanilla. I just can’t imagine an expansion that can even compare to that scale of content

They are informed by higher managers that have to look at numbers and get pitched by mobile game devs, and their bosses look at mobile games and they see "WoW! This mobile game studio spent a month and generated millions of bollars! We need to do more of what they do!" And all the shit just flows downstream from there

This is why I like the game Outward, bring a friend along for an adventure. Just a short intro of the story, get out into the world, discover the world and start learning the mechanics of fighting and survival. The game get's harder quite fast and only your cleverness and knowledge will carry you forward. Oh and btw there's no experience in the game so your only way to increase in strength is munny, cold earned munny, that you need to survive and to progress your gear, housing and so forth.

You're both right. Yes being the cool kid for having a great mount or super rare loot is and was great. But also now, even if you have those, they don't matter. Just because someone has "better gear" than you now doesn't mean they are better than you. Back in Vanilla, you better believe if someone had full T1-3 and you didn't they were WAY better than you. Or if you're sitting at Knight but they were GM or even Marshal, they were a better player. Those things MATTERED. You couldn't just get carried to that stuff.
