As a rule of thumb, having nicely spaced quads everywhere is generally desirable, but there are cases in 3d modeling when it can betray you.
Sometimes edges are going to get in the way, if we intend to do some e.g. Boolean operations then sometimes more edges (even if they were only there to help direct all quad edgeflow) they can start getting in the way.
In this Blender modeling tutorial we'll talk about this issue and show an easy fix (hint: Decimate Planar).

Police here! This is a downplay on All-quads, you've assualted the mesh with booleans and other shenanigans. The rule was that the desired mesh should be all-quads, rather than it being boolean-proof. On the ground now!

Hmm. The issue here is with the boolean, not the bevel nor the quad. Let's say you were to create a geometry in all quad in the shape you want it to be and then added the bevels, you wouldn't have this issue, but booleans can often be unpredictable

I was thinking the exact same, that boolean is creating engons which ruins the quads

@@JustBaal Y'all completely correct here, not sure what we were thinking with the original title, we ended up emphasizing the wrong point, what we were trying to get at it is : Sometimes edges are going to get in the way, if we intend to do some boolean operations then sometimes more of those edges (even if they were only there to help direct all quad edgeflow) they can start getting in the way! Instead we clumsily threw a quaded hand grenade and it bounced back in our face!

Well, quad can cause problem if you phuck them with boolean... surprise, surprise :D I do not know what to think about this video...... Quads which are not quad cause problems.

It was just meant to serve as an example to illustrate the case where you would need to use the Decimate modifier. Nonetheless, I have found myself many times using this technique in my daily work. Decimate is one of the most underrated modifiers in Blender. To avoid the eventual shading issues on the resulting non-quad topology, I can always set Hard Normals in the bevel modifier, and then apply Autosmoothing. It works beautifully for me.

@@hyperchango3902 This do not change fact that title of video is ... misleading, to say it politely :) Polymodeling is maybe are not fastest way to model, but there is reason why this is still used by professionals for serious work. People which want to achieve fast result, usually get result which reflect this speed. Gleb is good artist, but he know both way, know when and how to break rules. New artist skip this part, never learn proper modeling, good for hobby and some jobs, but in general they shoot himself in foot. Take for example @masterxeon1001, creator of Box Cutter and HOPS... he is excellent artist, but most people which use his addons more or less only can produce generic, mediocre, boring boxy designs. not a good example at all regarding quad topology. There are a few of these videos floating around...each of these tutorials bashing good topology should first put a video out modeling a production ready lambo, that requires some good hard surface skills. And no you can't just put some ngons together and call it good.

Does the new "exact" boolean solver helps with these issues? it's meant to give a more precise result, but i don't know what happens to the topology after a "very precise bool" with so many modifiers

The issue isn't the boolean, bevel doesn't work well with dense geometry

you want quads cuz they import pertectly into other software. What you have to do to fix it is make it ngons but when u export to game engine or other software you retopologise it to be all quads

(It's now changed so Quads don't sound like they're get the whole blame! 🙂) We didn't quite explain ourselves properly and the comments rightly helped point this out!!! What we were trying to say is : Sometimes edges are going to get in the way, if we intend to do some boolean operations then sometimes more of those edges (even if they were only there to help direct all quad edgeflow) they can start getting in the way! You've assaulted the all quad mesh with booleans??? You've destroyed the all quad nature of it and created tonnes of n-gons???? And you are blaming the quads??? What?
